DEADOR ALIVE: DIMENSIONS TEAM NINJA/TECMO KOEI Nintendo 3DS RATING:TEEN STEVE TILLEY QMI Agency I have a love-hate relationship with the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the mammoth video game trade show that takes over the sprawling Los  Angeles Convention Center — and holds me hostage — for four days every year. I love seeing and playing games that aren’t coming out for several months, love talking to game developers about  what they do, and love being able to compare notes with my fellow journalist types. E3, as it’s known, is the single most important video game event of the year, and everyone is there. Problem is, everyone is there. E3 is a crowded, noisy, chaotic mess, with interminable press conferences, relentless PR hyperbole, ever-present work deadlines and a show oor packed with more pixel-puking  jumbotrons, speaker stacks and rank dude-sweat than you’d nd at a year’s worth of rock shows. is will be my 10th E3, and although I’m as jaded as a Chinese emperor’s treasure chamber, it can still be a ridiculously exciting experience. If you love games, there’s nothing like being right there  when new titles are revealed, or new gaming systems get their hands-on coming-out parties.  And while I may gripe about my aching feet, ears, brain and liver, the bottom line is I get paid to go to L.A. and play video games. So suck it up, buttercup.  With that in mind, here’s a rundown of what we know each of the big three game hardware companies (as well as some of the key game publishers) will be revealing at E3 2011 when the show ocially kicks o Monday, as well as what we’re intensely curious to nd out. NINTENDO What we know: Nintendo is the only company with a new home game console to show off at E3 (unless Microsoft or Sony decides to pull the trigger on their next-generation systems much earlier than expected.) Currently codenamed Project Café, this successor to the Nintendo Wii will, according to online scuttlebutt, be more powerful than the Xbox 360 — high-definition graphics on a Nintendo console, at last! — and will boast some sort of funky controller with a large built-in touchscreen. What we don’t know (yet): Project Café’s real name (nothing can be any weirder than “Wii”), the price and the release date. Also, Nintendo is the company that popularized motion control on video game consoles, and we’re very curious to see how this will work with the presumably more standard-shaped controllers that the Project Café console will be sporting.Whither waggle? MICROSOFT What we know: We’ll be seeing a lot of Kinect at E3 2011, thanks to the motion-sensing Xbox 360 peripheral’s huge commercial success since its launch last year. Beyond that, we don’t know of any earth-shattering surprises (although if we did know, I guess they wouldn’t be surprises.) Expect lots about Gears of War 3, the racing simulator Forza 4, something new in the Halo universe (a high-definition remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved is the most popular rumour) and something-or-other to do with the Fable franchise, which desperately needs a shot in the arm right now. What we don’t know (yet): Will the Kinect games at E3 include these mythical titles that Microsoft promises will appeal to hardcore gamers? I hope so, because the softies are a little thin on the exclusive games front this year. SONY What we know: In addition to an impressive slate of PlayStation 3 exclusives, Sony will be showing off the successor to their put-a-fork- in-it-already PSP. Codenamed Next Generation Portable, with rumours suggesting the new device may be dubbed “PlayStation Vita” (yuck), the upcoming high-tech handheld is said to be capable of near-PS3 visuals and boasts dual thumbsticks, a touchscreen and a touch-sensitive backing. What we don’t know (yet): How exactly will Sony dance around the elephant in the room that is the month-long PlayStation Network hacking disaster? Apologetically? Aggressively? Via faux spokesman Kevin Butler? I’m almost as curious about that as I am about the NGP. GAME DEVELOPERS What we know: Walking into the cavernous halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center, I’m going to be like Dave entering the monolith in  2001: A Space Odyssey :“My God, it’s full of games.”From Uncharted  3: Drake’s Deception to Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, from Star Wars: The Old Republic to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, from Batman:  Arkham City to the Deus Ex: Human Revolution, there are literally going to be more must-see titles (all with colons in them, apparently) than there are hours in the day. What we don’t know (yet): Some heavy hitters might surprise us with appearances, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Games such as Grand Theft Auto V, Metal Gear Solid 5, a new Mario title – big franchises with sequels that haven’t been officially revealed yet – are always a possibility. But since E3 is busy enough as is, I won’t be too sad if they remain no-shows.There’s already lots of love to go around.
