M ost mass spectrometer filaments and heaters can berepaired and restored to a like-new condition byproper cleaning methods and by the replacement ofthe filament ribbon or wire and heater coils. We are constantly improvingour techniques and adding new equipment, ten-sioning and alignment jigs, and methodology toour shops to provide the best possible filamentrepair. NEW FlLAMENTS: Using our experience inrepairing different types of mass spectrometer filaments,Scientific lnstrument Services, Inc.™ has redesigned many ofthese filaments to provide filaments that are less expensive,more durable, longer lasting, and are easier to rebuild and clean.These filaments are fully described in the section of this catalogimmediately following the filament repairs.

OTHER FILAMENT REPAIRS: In addition to the filamentsdescribed herein, we can repair many other filaments. If your fil-ament is not described in this catalog, give us a call. In thesecases, any information that you can provide such as a descriptionof the filament design or construction, composition and size of thefilament material, or drawings of the filament would be greatlyappreciated. If possible, send us a filament for repair with at leasta small piece of the original filament material intact. We will needsome of this filament material to determine its dimensions andcomposition. Normal delivery on these special requests is 3 to 4weeks when done for the first time. Subsequent deliveries will be2 to 3 weeks.

NEW - YTTRIA AND THORIA COATED FILAMENTS: SIS cannow coat your repaired filament with either Thoria or Yttria.Several manufacturers have used these filaments with anticipat-ed increase in filament emission at lower filament temperaturesresulting in longer filament life. If you would like to experimentwith these styles of filaments in your mass spectrometers, we cancoat most styles of filaments. SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS: Most glass parts and ceramic insulators are very fragile and are easily damaged during shipment. Therefore, please package all filaments carefully toavoid damage during shipment. We recommend that you package the filaments personally. Filaments should be packagedin a box at least 6 inches square using packing peanuts or bubble pack as cushioning. We recommend shipping by UPS orFederal Express for best handling.

Filaments for the x-ray generators manufactured by Rigaku, Siemens and Elliot can be repaired by Scientific InstrumentServices™. These instruments, which are used in crystallography, utilize coiled tungsten filaments. S.I.S.™ can repair these fila-ments at a large savings over the cost of replacement filaments from the manufacturer. The repaired filaments have demon-strated performances at least equal to the original filaments supplied by the manufacturers. VG-FAB Probe Tips Scientific Instrument Services manufactures VG-FAB probe

tips. These new probe tips are similar in construction to the orig-inal FAB tips but with a slightly larger and stronger ceramic base.This results in a much more durable probe tip.

Three styles are available: the slanted design used on themajority of instruments (VG-FAB), the new straight design, (VG-FB2), and the dual design (VG-FB3) used on some of the newerinstruments.

S.I.S. has redesigned the DCI Probe Tip for VG TRIO 1000and 2000 instruments. The new design incorporates a VespelDCI Probe Tip Base which plugs into the tip of your existingprobe. Then the replaceable Probe Tip Filaments are pluggedinto this new Vespel Probe Tip Base. Once the Vespel Probe TipBase is purchased, the cost of repairing or replacing the probefilaments is much less than those available from the manufactur-er. This new DCI probe tip was designed for and tested by sev-eral of our customers. The DCI filaments performed the same asthose originally used but the replacement cost is much less.

filaments for the Agilent Technologies MSD seriesmass spectrometer (Agilent Models 5992, 5992A,

5992B, 5993, 5993B, 5995, 5970, 5970A, etc.)* These fil-aments are exact retrofits for the original AgilentTechnologies filaments (#05990-60084). Strict quality con-trol is adhered to when manufacturing these filaments.Distance between filament posts is accurate to within0.001". Each rhenium wire filament is accurately tensionedand aligned on an Agilent source block. The filament wireis accurately positioned over the ion source slit to assureoptimum performance.

Agilent Technologies 5989 Filaments S.I.S. manufactures the strap or band style filaments for the Agilent Technologies 5989

and other 5980 series mass spectrometers (Agilent #05985-60179). The rhenium filament wire is accurately positioned, tensioned, and spot welded to the metal strap. Themetal strap contains the pre-punched holes for easy installation.

The Thermo SSQ™/TSQ™, 70 and 700, 4500 FilamentsThis new design incorporates stronger, round filament posts, which do not bend, instead of the straps used by Thermo.

Bending would cause the filament to sag, lose sensitivity, and short out against the shield. In addition, we have lowered the shield approx-imately 0.25 mm. This also delays a sagging filament from shorting out. (Thermo #40005-60140)

The metal filament shown on the right is a filament similar to the original Thermo filament for those users who prefer this style filament. However, sev-eral design improvements have been made for better performance. The filamentshield is constructed from a heavier gauge stainless steel material and is much stronger. Thefilament posts have been shortened and are constructed of a heavier gauge metal to help elim-inate filament sagging.

Ceramic Body Filament for Thermo 3000 and 3200 Series MassSpectrometer

These ceramic body filaments were designed to eliminate many of the problems associated with the Thermo metal type filaments. Our new design is strong and durable. The short metal posts hold the filament wire straight, while tension is maintained to minimizing sagging. The ceramic body eliminates shorting of the filament to the source. The filaments come complete with silver wire leadsand stainless steel mounting screws. Connections to instrument lead wires can be made with the connector listed below (requires two connectors).

The posts protrude out of the middle of the filament. There is no metal in the back to short against the magnet. Also, there is no metalon the ends, which insulates the filament from shorting out in these areas as well. The 0.032" diameter leads can be cut to the desiredlength, depending on the configuration of your instrument.

These filaments can be connected to your leads with two push-on connectors (SlS Part# B11288-2) or stainless steel connectors (SISPart #SCI)
