    FTUC Wants $4 Minimum

WageThe Fiji Trades Union CongressFTUC) has launched a campaign toraise the National Minimum Wage to$4 an hour. This campaign was launched during theFTUC’s Biennial Conference in Nadi lastweek. General Secretary, Felix Anthonysaid while the FTUC is mindful that the$4 Minimum wage will still peg workersbelow the poverty line, they believe it isa decent starting point to work towards aMinimum Wage that is pegged above thepoverty line. “The FTUC estimates that

he poverty line is around $4.50 an hour.We advocate that annual adjustmentsmust be made to work towards thatgoal,” he said. “The Constitution of Fijiat Chapter 2, Section 33 clearly stateshat the State must take reasonable

measures within its available resourceso achieve the progressive realization ofhe right of every person to work and to

a just minimum wage.”“The current minimum wage of $2.32s grossly inadequate and condemns

workers to extreme poverty. It is not a

realistic starting point to progressivelyensure a “just Minimum Wage” as the

target is too far off and annual inationarymovements will further make itimpossible to realize a minimum wageabove the poverty line.” Mr Anthonysaid the situation is further compoundedby the National Employment Center policy on providing employment foryoung people. “The wage guideline setfor attaches is $60 per week without anyFNPF deductions, overtime paymentsor any other benets applicable to theseworkers all in the name of creatingemployment.” “The reality is that in

many workplaces, permanent employeesare being replaced by these attaches at$60 per week. “ “This has underminedthe National Minimum wage and theminimum conditions set out in theEmployment Relations Promulgation. What is happening in Fiji is that we aredriving the wages downwards, a raceto the bottom.” “The current minimumwage of $2.32 means a weekly wage of$96.05 after FNPF deductions. Then weneed to take 9% off that for VAT. Thisleaves the worker with $87.41 per week.

A conservative 2015 estimate for BasicNeeds Poverty Line is around $185.00

per week. This leaves a massive gapabout $97.59 per week. As time goesour people get deeper and deeper i poverty and debt, yet we wonder w productivity is still low.” He said wFTUC understands the plight of smbusinesses and is receptive to soconcessions for this lot, it disagrthat bigger businesses hide behind small businesses to pay poverty waand claim to be concerned about smbusinesses. “Threats of unemploymrising are mere threats and FTUC

condent that if workers earn moeconomic activity will increase, whwill in turn create demand and joThis will be good for businesseswell. Decent work is also about a jwage and conditions of employmand not merely any job.” We recall  promise that the Prime Minister mto the people to create a Just society that no Fijian will be left behind. Soit’s only the workers who have been behind and we call on Governmenact with some determination to ens

a fair deal for workers. A $4 minimwage is a good place to start,” he add

He will besentenced next month. Yusuf was alsofrom Fiji.Juwairiyah’s father, Mohammed Faizal,

“I can put this behind me nally, now

I know what happened. A long time Ihave been waiting for this day. Whatcomes next I don’t know, I’ll just haveto wait and see – it’s pretty daunting.”Justice Raynor Asher told the jurors:“This has been an ordeal for you. Bearthat in mind and look after yourselvesover the next few days.”Juwairiyah and her mother were foundburied under the Takapuna overbridgein Auckland’s North Shore in October2014 but the Crown said they werekilled at the end of 2006 or early 2007.Reddy claimed the confession was a

sham and it was only made under intense pressure from Police who targeted himin an extensive investigation. He toldthe court the real killer was a part-Indian man called James, who was in arelationship with Ms Yusuf at the time. The jury rejected that explanation,

     preferring the one Reddy him

He said he strangled Ms Yusuf with the cord ofelectrical iron, before smothering Jwith a pillow.“He wrapped [the cord] around her nonce and tightened it until she stopbreathing,”Crown prosecutor Natalie Wasaid. “There was likely to be ministruggle, no noise and no blood.”The Crown said Reddy killed the womout of anger that she had made a sc

He killed Jojo because she would havenevitably outed him as the killer, Ms

Walker said. After the murders, Reddy franticallydrove around Bombay Hills south ofAuckland, looking for a suitable areao dispose of them. When the search

proved fruitless, he called his uncle BalNaidu in the early hours of the morningand drove to his Papatoetoe address.Mr Naidu told the court that Reddyadmitted killing his girlfriend and herdaughter and said they were under ablanket in the boot of his Subaru. The pair drove to the North Shore spot

where the bodies were found and MrNaidu pointed out a couple of locationsby the bridge that would be suitable.Twenty four hours later Reddy wentback and dug for hours before dumpinghe victims side by side.

For more than seven years, the motherand daughter lay covered in stone andmud. Their disappearance was onlynoted by Police when Ms Yusuf’smother made a missing person’s reportn 2013.

Reddy came under the microscopeafter they discovered he had appearedn Manukau District Court in 2007harged with threatening to kill Ms

Yusuf and assaulting her ex-husbandwith a machete.Bank data showed someone had beenaking large cash sums from the victim’s

account since her disappearance toobut nothing conclusively pointed to thedefendant.t was only after undercover Police

ofcers gained Reddy’s trust over thecourse of a six-month operation thathey got the evidence they needed.

Outside court Detective SergeantStephen Nightingale made specialmention of the work done by Crownprosecutors Natalie Walker and LukeClancy. He also praised the investigation team, everal of whom were in court for the

verdicts.“It’s been a long road and I’m reallyproud of them,” he said.Mr Nightingale also spoke on behalf ofhe victims’ family.

“Pakeeza was the eldest daughter ina family of ve children. She wasbeautiful, caring and a wonderful mother

to Juwairiyah,” he said.“We’re extremely pleased this offenderwill now be held accountable for histerrible actions. We would never wish

for anyone to go through what we haveand are thankful our questions havenally been answered and can nowbegin to move forward with our lives.”Ms Yusuf’s uncle Firoz Mohammedtold the Herald: “Every day we have sathere for the three week trial and listenedto everything they have said and todaywhen they announced the verdict, Icried.“The man who has done this is guiltyand it gives us closure.”He said Ms Yusuf’s mother and fatherhad been in the court to hear the verdicts.

“We all just don’t really know whatto say. This afternoon we will all gettogether and do a prayer for Pakeeza andJojo to rest in peace because we knowthat justice has been done.”How Yusuf, Reddy Met In AucklandPakeeza Yusuf and Kamal Reddy met in2006.Depending on which witness accountyou believed, the pair were eitherconducting an affair behind Ms Yusuf’shusband’s back, or they becameromantically involved after meeting

when Ms Yusuf and her family movedinto Reddy’s Otahuhu house. Reddysaid it was simply a relationship ofconvenience to satisfy his immigrationrequirements.By her mother Mubarak Rojina Banu’saccount, Ms Yusuf had no extracurricularhobbies or interests. Farmers Will Still Have To Pay ToTransport Cane From Farm To Mill

Cane farmers in Rakiraki will stillhave to fork out money from their ownpockets to transport sugarcane fromheir farms to the Penang Mill.

Fiji Sugar Corporation ExecutiveChairman Abdul Khan has today clariedhe FSC will ONLY take care of the extraost involved in transporting cane fromhe Penang to the Rarawai mill.

The Prime Minister’s announcement fewweeks ago that the government will takeare of the cost of cane transportation

from the Penang to Rarawai Mill wasertainly a good news to the farmers in

Rakiraki. However, Fiji Sugar CorporationExecutive Chairman Abdul Khan sayshere has been some misconception

about this initiative amongst the farmers.Khan made it clear that the cost ofransporting cane to the Penang Mill willtill be borne by the farmers themselves.

“So the additional cost from Penang Millo Rarawai Mill will actually be provided

by the government so that the farmerdoes not end up losing any money. Buthaving said that, you will have farmersthat were transporting cane from areaslike between Tavua and Rakiraki, wedo not expect them to go to Penang. Ifthey got trucks that are good enough,we do not expect them to be travelingto Penang to unload their cane and then

come back. We will monitor that,” saidAbdul Khan- Executive Chairman- FSCIts will cost the government close to 2.5million dollars to transport cane fromthe Penang to Rarawai Mill. The 3 mills are expected to crush 1.47million tons of sugarcane, extracting anestimated 170 thousand tons of raw sugar.“It’s encouraging. Obviously if you lookat the two dry seasons and before we gothit by TC Winston, our aim was to atleast meet 1.8 to 1.9 million tons of canethat we have been getting for the last fewyears of dry season. But unfortunatelybecause of TC Winston, we won’t active

that,” he said.FSC is also working around the clockensure the 3 mills are ready well befthe crushing season starts.“Labasa Mill will be the rst onecommence crushing on 16th June followby Lautoka and Rarawai on 19th and 2July respectively. FSC will also bewith as siting farmers in getting their c

access roads in order soon,” he mention“Post Winston, some of the repair wothat we may have actually got in budget for say $100,000, so TC Winsmay have done more damage so $100,000 may now become $200,0So the other areas that we did not intto do the maintenance work and if Winston damaged that, then we hsignicant amount of dollars goingthere. Fortunately we got insurancethat will cover the cost associated wTC Winston,” he said.Around $2 million dollars has been aside for cane access roads.

Yaqona Industry Recovery Expected ToTake 3 To 6 Years

Projections are it will take three to sixyears for our yaqona industry to recoverfollowing the devastation caused to thendustry by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

This comes as the price of yaqaonacontinues to reach record levels dueo damage from Cyclone Winston to

yaqona plantations.Fiji Crop and Livestock Councilemphasised yaqona is a slow-growingcrop and thus the three-six year projection.Council chairman, Simon Cole, stressedfarmers’ supply for 2017, 2018, and2019 was all taken away by TC Winston.A signicant increase of up to 200 percent has been noted in Yaqona pricesocally following the cyclone.

A random price survey in Suva, Nausori,Nadi, Lautoka and Namaka markets hasrevealed the average price has gonefrom between $30 to $45 per kilogramo $90 to $110 per kilogram.

As a result, the yaqona bags that used tobe sold for $1 are not costing up to $5per bag.Mr Cole said: “For a yaqona plant, strongwinds shake the plants which results inroots damage causing the whole plant towilt and die.“Unfortunately TC Winston didn’t sparemost of our Yaqona producing provinces

.e. Cakaudrove, Lomaiviti, Naitasiriand Ra province.“For all the cyclone damaged areas, thefarmers uprooted all their yaqona, driedt and store it.

“Farmers are slowly releasing theirdried yaqona stocks, therefore they areraising the yaqona prices as they knowheir current stocks will be their only

source of income to wait for their nextharvest.”Mr Cole said middleman and traders arerunning around looking to buy in bulkbut some farmers are reluctant to releaseall their stocks. The worst yet Longest Kava seller at the Suva Citymarket, Ratu Sairusi Tagirualili, 78years old, said the increase in price wasone of the worst that he had seen sincestarting his business in 1970.Mr Tagirualili given the shortage, itwas the small businesses which weresuffering the most.It is understood the big players (sellers)are going straight to the farmers andbuying directly from them yaqona worth

$20,000 to $30,000 weekly. Thus the farmers are lured and sell

the crop to these big players who thendominate and control the market anddetermine the prices. For 36 years old, Rajenesh Nand, owner

of Moala and Kadavu Kava at the Suvamarket, business has been tough the pastfew weeks since Kava price increased. He said other Kava sellers in the marketare inuencing this increase. He added people are auditing Kava atthe wharf when the shipment arrives andsmall businesses like his are suffering asthey are not receiving anything.Couple Arieta Kau and Taniela KauNauwa, Kava sellers at Nausori Market, shared similar sentiments as clients arenot happy with the increase.Mr Kau said: “We don’t want to loseout on our customers, so we clearly toldthem our price that we have bought theYaqona and if they could accept the new price.”Advice for farmersMeanwhile, the council is urging farmersto replant their crops but the earliest aharvest can happen is three years.“It is likely demand for imports fromVanuatu will increase in the interimand this might dampen price. Howeverlocally grown kava is preferred in themarket,” Mr Cole said.

“The heads of the Kava Associationthrough the Council has also madesubmissions to the Ministry ledCommittee (FAO and World Bank)that is now driving the medium termrehabilitation of the crop and all othercrops in Fiji.“The Association identied the logical

steps required to rehabilitate the cand an estimate of damage.”Our exportsMeanwhile, it is not only the lo

market which will suffer from shortage but moreso the export markMr Cole said farmers who supplythe exporters cannot meet their qubecause of the current situation.“Some farmers prefer to sell to the lomarket which is fetching them -$80kg compared to the $40 -$50 expmarket,” he said.“Farmers believe the current supply last them till the end of this year, whwill directly affect our exports. Sokava exporters may close their busindown due to this shortages.”Farmers reactionWhile those market vendors struggling with the increased price, really the farmers who are benetfor the interim.Mr Cole said farmers are benetingthe short term as they are doubling tsales, but they will suffer in the lterm as they will run out towards end of the year.“Dealers who always get their supfrom Taveuni, are closing down tbusiness as they are running out

supply,” he said.“According to the Savusavu middlemthey will close down by the end ofyear if the situation does not change“Most middleman are looking Kadavu to supply as it was spared byWinston, but the big question is w price Kadavu will offer to them.”

Fiji Airways Acquires Training Device ForPilots

Fiji Airways has acquired a best-in-classA330 Multi-Function Training DeviceMFTD) to train A330 pilot training atts Head Ofce in Nadi.

The airline has spent $1 million on theacquisition which will reduce trainingosts signicantly. The MFTD has been

approved by the Civil Aviation Authorityof Fiji (CAAF), and an approvalerticate was ofcially presented to

Fiji Airways yesterday following whichhe rst training of pilots was conducted.

The MFTD will be used as the initialtage for A330 pilot training before

progressing to full simulator training, which is conducted at overseas trainingfacilities. Having this facility in-housewill thus result in the acceleration of

pilot training time. It will be utilised formainly procedures training, replicatingaspects of the cockpit. It also reproduces, with some degree of visual realism, the

visual environment ights encounter, including clouds, thunderstorms, andthe landing approaches of airportsaround the world. The device alsorecreates emergency situations thatthe cockpit crew has to be trained for.The use of the MFTD greatly reducesthe cost of training, which otherwisewould have to be incurred by practiceon the actual aircraft or a simulator. Itwill also allow for development andcontinuous progress of the cockpit crew, enabling testing and implementation ofimprovements identied by the Flight

Trump has mocked the suggestion ofputting the former president to work. How can Crooked Hillary put her

husband in charge of the economy whenhe was responsible for NAFTA, theworst economic deal in U.S. history?”he presumptive GOP presidential

nominee tweeted on Tuesday. And former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) suggested that the promise of such amajor role for Bill Clinton suggests he isffectively running for a third term. The president of the United States

has an actual job to create jobs, createwealth, create take home pay,” he said onFox Business Network. “That’s Hillary’sob if she wants to be president. That’s

not the rst spouse’s job.”The Clinton camp sees Bill Clinton asa valuable asset and believes the GOPattacks on him will backre.I think that people remember the

booming economy [under PresidentClinton], and they remember he led the

argest economic expansion in Americanhistory, and experts on all sides of theaisle agree,” one former Clinton aideaid. “There’s a reason he’s been son demand for campaigns across theountry in recent years. How would thatver be a bad idea? It’s mind-bogglinghat it would be anything but positive.”

Longtime allies and former aides sayhat the former president might indeed

be the best person to help navigate theecovering economy and “get incomesising,” as the Democratic front-runneraid at a campaign rally on Monday.

William Galston, a senior fellow ofgovernance studies at the Brookingsnstitution who served as a policy advisero Bill Clinton during his administration, aid his former boss could “add a lot of

He got into a high-prole ght withBlack Lives Matter activists over his

The focus on the bill, which many on the left blame for themass incarceration of black men, alsorefocused attention on Hillary Clinton’s1990s “superpredators” comments — areference to young black criminals.Trump has gone out of his way tohighlight the low points of the Clintonadministration, including the former

The Clintoncampaign can expect those attacks tointensify in the fall. There’s also always a danger of BillClinton going rogue, something thatGalston said could also be a worry in aHillary Clinton administration. He cautioned that Bill Clinton’s role onthe economy could be “disruptive” andcreate “structural difculties” if it is notwell planned.

Republicans are also signaling awillingness to attack Bill Clinton’seconomic record. In an email on Wednesday, Michael Short,a spokesman for the Republican NationalCommittee, said that “Democrats liketo forget that Bill Clinton handed hissuccessor a recession and played a leading

Lack Of Sleep May Lead To DementiaScientists have found that people whodon't sleep much or are suffering fromleep apnea were possibly likelier to

develop dementia.According to the new study, people

who don't have as much oxygen inheir blood during sleep, which occurs

with sleep apnea and conditions such asemphysema, were more likely to haveiny abnormalities in brain tissue, called

micro infarcts, than people with higherevels of oxygen in the blood. These

abnormalities are associated with thedevelopment of dementia.n addition, people who spent less timen deep sleep, called slow wave sleep,

were more likely to have loss of braincells than people who spent more time

n slow wave sleep. Slow wave sleep ismportant in processing new memories

and remembering facts. People tendto spend less time in slow wave sleepas they age. Loss of brain cells is alsoassociated with Alzheimer's disease anddementia.

For the study, 167 Japanese Americanmen had sleep tests conducted in theirhomes when they were an average age of84. All were followed until they died anaverage of six years later, and autopsieswere conducted on their brains to lookfor micro infarcts, loss of brain cells, the plaques and tangles associated withAlzheimer's disease and Lewy bodiesfound in Lewy body dementia. The participants were divided into 4groups based on the percentage of thenight spent in slow wave sleep. Of the

37 men who spent the least time inslow wave sleep, 17 had brain cell loss,

compared to seven of the 38 men wspent the most time in slow wave sleeThe results remained the same aadjusting for factors such as smokand body mass index and after exclud

participants who had died early in follow-up period and those who had lscores on cognitive tests at the beginnof the study.Study author Rebecca P. Gelber, MDrPH, said that the ndings suggesthat low blood oxygen levels reduced slow wave sleep may contribto the processes that lead to cognitdecline and dementia. More reseawas needed to determine how slow wsleep may play a restorative role in brfunction and whether preventing

blood oxygen levels may reduce the rof dementia.

Prevent Gout AttacksQ) I get terrible attacks of gout. What

causes them and is there a way to preventhem?A) Gout attacks are caused by the

accumulation of uric acid crystals inand around the affected joints, mostcommonly the big toe, but also at timeshe hands, wrists, knees, ankles and

elbows. The crystals form when thekidneys are unable to ush the uric acidout of the body quickly enough.Common triggers include drinking alcohol, nsufcient water intake and dehydration, aking diuretics, being overweight and
