Ten-Acious is a well-muscled, high performance, smooth-polled, po-tentially homozygous polled son of McTender. Ten-Acious is a 10 for tenderness and also a TT for Leptin on the Quantum Genetics Leptin test. In addition to all of his great DNA data, he is phenotypically our fi rst choice as a herdsire in this year’s calf crop. His performance is ter-rifi c, his eye appeal is exceptional and his EPDs are right on target for an ideal bull for all segments of the industry – purebred, commercial, feedlot and beef packing. It is extremely rare to fi nd a 10 for tender-ness in the Charolais breed or any breed for that matter, and it is rarer still to have one be a double marker for the Leptin gene. To have one bull that puts all of this genetic potential together with a near-perfect phenotype and awesome performance numbers will, we hope, have high impact in advancing the beef industry. See us for semen on this exciting young bull.

Leptin is a protein that affects the regulation of metabolism. Leptin controls fat deposition and marbling in cattle. A TT marker for Leptin controls fi nish in cattle by increasing appetite and decreasing metabolism. A CC marker for Leptin decreases appetite and increases metabolism. Feedlot operators know that Leptin does not affect the fi rst two phases of the growth curve. As long as animals are grouped according to frame and their Leptin genotype, we can increase the rate of fi nish and marbling without affecting yield. The TT genotype is homozygous. Used on any group of cows, the CC genotype will be eliminated.

Fight High Corn Prices with DNA

Try a Little TendernessYou’ve no doubt been bombarded with new information about using DNA markers to select cattle for several carcass traits, including tenderness. We, at Effertz Key Ranch, welcome this exciting and accurate new technology. We are testing much of our seedstock for tenderness because we believe that providing consumers with a satisfying eating experience is our future and will be tied to profi tability. Igenity TenderGene tenderness scores range from 10 (most tender) to 1 (least tender), and following the scores are the specifi c genotype for each allele affecting tenderness, in this order: Calpain 316, Calpistatin, Calpain 4751. The difference between cattle with no C alleles in all six locations vs. those with all six C alleles (like McTender and Ten-Acious) can account for up to 2.3# of sheer force on the Warner Brat-zler sheer force test. Each C allele does not have the same tenderness value. The numeric tenderness score accounts for the amount of sheer force dif-ference on a scale of 10 to 1, 10 being the most tender. How signifi cant is a tenderness score of 10? In a random sample of 10,000 American cattle, only 27 would have a tenderness score of 10.

“I increased the profi tability in my feedlot with the Quan-tum Leptin test. This is the fi rst genetic tool that has given me the opportunity to more effi ciently manage cattle rather than grouping by their phenotype. By using Leptin genotype TT in sorting, I’ve achieved shorter days on feed.”

Greg Appleyard, Owner/Manager, Strathmore, AlbertaCattleland Feedyard (25,000 head)and 2000 head cow-calf operation

The chart below shows the current distribution of tenderness score in the American cowherd (red) and how the tenderness score would advance if they were bred to a bull with a tenderness score of 10 in the fi rst (blue) and second (green) generation.

163S – Here’s another dandy red polled purebred son of Prince, the full brother to Nebraska, the popular herd sire used in the MacDonald Salers herd. He’s deep-fl anked and deep-quartered out of a beefy Heavy Medal daughter.

181S – This deep, thick-made Robust son is a half brother to the high weight-per-day-of-age bull of all breeds at last year’s Midland bull test. He’s a 50/50 Red Angus-Salers hy-brid and started at 80 lbs. and is gaining 4.13 lbs. per day.

182S – This might be the show bull of the sale – a purebred red polled Prince son that is thick-ended with that real fancy look. He’s got class to burn and comes from a real top-producing, thick-made Redwood cow who raised one of the top selling bulls in 2005 that sold to Steve Stoddard, Mont.

185S – If you like ’em deep and thick, look no further! Here’s a 50/50 Red Angus/Salers Optimizer by Robust that really has the look, the EPDs and the weight to back it up. An 80 lb. BW and one of the top WWs at 770 lbs.
