Events

Ash Wednesday, February 14 Schedule of Masses with Distribution of Ash

6:30am, 8:00am,

12 noon, 5:00pm and 7:00pm

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a very important season that can foster change and conversion in each of us. Lenten season is also a special opportunity to grow spiritually through penitential practices, especially those of self-denial, almsgiving and through work of kindness and compassion. As we journey together during the forty days of Lent, let us also keep each other in prayers.

Cold and Flu Season Due to the severity of the cold and flu season this year, St. Joseph will discontinue sharing the Precious Blood during Mass until further notice. Jesus is fully present, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, under either species. Remember that is not required—or advisable—to attend Mass if you are ill. Take care of your health, and of those around you.

Burning of Palms, February 11

Join us after the 11:30am Mass next week as we burn the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday. Their ashes will be used on Ash Wednesday. (Palms are still being collected in the baskets at the entrances to the Basilica.)

Grief Support Ministry Thursday, February 8, 6:30pm

A Message From The Principal Of St. Joseph Notre Dame High School

Dear Parishioners:

As Principal of Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School, now in my second year of service, I am even more proud of the special relationship that exists between the high school, the parish and elementary school. As Father George our Pastor always reminds us in our meetings, we are three distinct entities but “one family in Christ.” That sense of “one family in Christ” permeates our campus, and I truly believe shapes the lives of our students.

As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, I want to express my deepest thanks to Father George and the parishioners of St. Joseph Basilica for your constant support and prayers for SJND. During the course of my tenure as Principal, so many of you have reached out to me and expressed your support and constant prayers for the work of Catholic education at SJND.

This past year SJND finalized its Strategic Plan 2017-2020 and our Goal One in the Strategic Plan focused on Catholic Identity and Mission. We also reexamined our storied history and the founders of our schools: the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the Marianist Brothers. Learning about their unique charisms as religious communities, SJND boldly declared that its Charism would focus on the Holy Family, because SJND prides itself on its “family culture.” In August at our faculty retreat, two Marianist Brothers and one Sister of Notre Dame de Namur offered reflections on their charism of the Holy Family.

As Principal I take great pride in all aspects of our Catholic identity at SJND. I am proud of our four year Theology requirement for all students and that our Theology department challenges our students to think about the importance of faith and reason in the life of a believer. I am proud of the work of our Campus Ministry department who work hard to ensure that all students attend an annual retreat off-site, where they have the opportunity to encounter the living God. Seniors in particular always cherish their four day Kairos Retreat which is the culmination of their career at SJND. Finally, I am proud of the Service Learning program and the numerous opportunities for service like the Adopt A

Family Christmas program which brings needed gifts to underserved communities.

I have one favor to ask: spread the good word about SJND and SJES – I want more parish children in our Religious Education program to consider a Catholic education at our schools.

Catholic Schools truly make a difference!

Kenneth Jennings

And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow

weary. – Galatians 6:9

Living Stewardship Now! 14th Annual Walk For Life Tens of thousands participated in support of life last Saturday in San Francisco. As in past years, a group of pilgrims of St. Joseph participated in this important event and walked peacefully together with other pilgrims to be a vocal and visual message that people of the West Coast stand for life and that we all deserve better then abortion. This is definitely a great event for the young adults and teens. Thank you to the Life Ministry and all other Ministries who help organized this event this year.

At the 7:00pm Mass, St.Joseph Parish Community had the honor of blessing long time parishioner, Helen Parè, by Fr. George, who celebrated her 95th birthday. What a blessing to be sharing in the joy of her birthday together with her family!
