Welcome! Baptism is sometimes called enlightenment. The gospel for this Sunday is the

story of the man born blind healed by Christ. “I was blind, now I see,” declares the man.

In baptism God opens our eyes to see the truth of who we are: God’s beloved children.

As David was anointed king of Israel, in baptism God anoints our head with oil, and

calls us to bear witness to the light of Christ in our daily lives.

This is a special bulletin for Grace Lutheran Church. We have closed the Sanctuary to

the general public amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and this Sunday the service will be

live-streamed from Pastor Jeff’s house. This bulletin is designed to be used at home by

anyone who is baptized serving as the Worship Leader. Holy Communion is not

included. When we can gather again at Grace, we will have a glorious celebration of

Holy Communion together again.

FIRST READING Ezekiel 37:1-14

Introduction to the Lesson: Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones is a promise that Israel as a nation, though dead in exile, will live again in their land through God’s life-giving spirit. Three times Israel is assured that through this vision they will know that “I am the Lord.”

Reader: I felt the powerful presence of the Lord, and his spirit took me and set me down

in a valley where the ground was covered with bones. He led me all around the valley,

and I could see that there were very many bones and that they were very dry. He said to

me, “Mortal man, can these bones come back to life?” I replied, “Sovereign Lord, only

you can answer that!”

He said, “Prophesy to the bones. Tell these dry bones to listen to the word of

the Lord. Tell them that I, the Sovereign Lord, am saying to them: I am going to put

breath into you and bring you back to life. I will give you sinews and muscles, and cover

you with skin. I will put breath into you and bring you back to life. Then you will know

that I am the Lord.” So I prophesied as I had been told. While I was speaking, I heard a

rattling noise, and the bones began to join together. While I watched, the bones were

covered with sinews and muscles, and then with skin. But there was no breath in the

bodies.

God said to me, “Mortal man, prophesy to the wind. Tell the wind that the

Sovereign Lord commands it to come from every direction, to breathe into these dead

bodies, and to bring them back to life.” So I prophesied as I had been told. Breath

entered the bodies, and they came to life and stood up. There were enough of them to

form an army.

God said to me, “Mortal man, the people of Israel are like these bones. They say that

they are dried up, without any hope and with no future. So prophesy to my people Israel

and tell them that I, the Sovereign Lord, am going to open their graves. I am going to

take them out and bring them back to the land of Israel. When I open the graves where

my people are buried and bring them out, they will know that I am the Lord. I will put

my breath in them, bring them back to life, and let them live in their own land. Then

they will know that I am the Lord. I have promised that I would do this—and I will. I,

the Lord, have spoken.”

After the reading...

Reader: The word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL LESSON John 11:1-45

Introduction to the Gospel: Jesus is moved to sorrow when his friend Lazarus falls ill

and dies. Then, dramatically he calls his friend out of the tomb and restores him to life.

Page 5: Fifth Sunday in Lent March 29, 2020...2020/03/29  · Fifth Sunday in Lent March 29, 2020 Adaptive Worship Service 1812 North Highland Avenue 727-446-5026 Clearwater, Florida 33755

Worship Leader: The Holy Gospel according to John in the 11th chapter.

Congregation: Glory to you, O Lord.

A man named Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, became sick. Bethany was the town where

Mary and her sister Martha lived. (2 This Mary was the one who poured the perfume on

the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was

sick.) 3 The sisters sent Jesus a message: “Lord, your dear friend is sick.”

4 When Jesus heard it, he said, “The final result of this sickness will not be the death of

Lazarus; this has happened in order to bring glory to God, and it will be the means by

which the Son of God will receive glory.”

5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 Yet when he received the news that

Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days. 7 Then he said to the

disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.”

8 “Teacher,” the disciples answered, “just a short time ago the people there wanted to

stone you; and are you planning to go back?”

9 Jesus said, “A day has twelve hours, doesn't it? So those who walk in broad daylight

do not stumble, for they see the light of this world. 10 But if they walk during the night

they stumble, because they have no light.” 11 Jesus said this and then added, “Our friend

Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I will go and wake him up.”

12 The disciples answered, “If he is asleep, Lord, he will get well.”

13 Jesus meant that Lazarus had died, but they thought he meant natural sleep. 14 So

Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 but for your sake I am glad that I was not

with him, so that you will believe. Let us go to him.”

16 Thomas (called the Twin) said to his fellow disciples, “Let us all go along with the

Teacher, so that we may die with him!”

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been buried four days

before. 18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19 and many Judeans had

come to see Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother's death.

20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary

stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “If you had been here, Lord, my brother

would not have died! 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask

him for.”

23 “Your brother will rise to life,” Jesus told her.

24 “I know,” she replied, “that he will rise to life on the last day.”

Page 6: Fifth Sunday in Lent March 29, 2020...2020/03/29  · Fifth Sunday in Lent March 29, 2020 Adaptive Worship Service 1812 North Highland Avenue 727-446-5026 Clearwater, Florida 33755

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will

live, even though they die; 26 and those who live and believe in me will never die. Do

you believe this?”

27 “Yes, Lord!” she answered. “I do believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God,

who was to come into the world.”

28 After Martha said this, she went back and called her sister Mary privately. “The

Teacher is here,” she told her, “and is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got

up and hurried out to meet him. (30 Jesus had not yet arrived in the village, but was still

in the place where Martha had met him.) 31 The people who were in the house with

Mary comforting her followed her when they saw her get up and hurry out. They

thought that she was going to the grave to weep there.

32 Mary arrived where Jesus was, and as soon as she saw him, she fell at his feet.

“Lord,” she said, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”

33 Jesus saw her weeping, and he saw how the people with her were weeping also; his

heart was touched, and he was deeply moved. 34 “Where have you buried him?” he

asked them.

“Come and see, Lord,” they answered.

35 Jesus wept. 36 “See how much he loved him!” the people said.

37 But some of them said, “He gave sight to the blind man, didn't he? Could he not have

kept Lazarus from dying?”

38 Deeply moved once more, Jesus went to the tomb, which was a cave with a stone

placed at the entrance. 39 “Take the stone away!” Jesus ordered.

Martha, the dead man's sister, answered, “There will be a bad smell, Lord. He has been

buried four days!”

40 Jesus said to her, “Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you

believed?” 41 They took the stone away. Jesus looked up and said, “I thank you, Father,

that you listen to me. 42 I know that you always listen to me, but I say this for the sake

of the people here, so that they will believe that you sent me.” 43 After he had said this,

he called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 He came out, his hands and feet

wrapped in grave cloths, and with a cloth around his face. “Untie him,” Jesus told them,

“and let him go.”

GOSPEL MESSAGE—From Sundays and Seasons

Can These Bones Live?

Before it is anything else, today’s gospel is an up-close, deeply personal story of grief. Even the movements seem familiar: Jesus is on the way, then present to each sister. At last, he stands outside the tomb of his friend who has died, and whom the community mourns.

In today’s first reading, we are swept up with Ezekiel and deposited into a wilderness valley full of dry, dead bones. In the valley, God asks Ezekiel, “Mortal, can these bones live?” (Ezek. 37:3). Of Lazarus in our gospel reading for today, we, like Ezekiel, might also respond: “O Lord God, you know.” How can dry bones come to life? And how could a dead man ever possibly live again? Indeed, we might wonder if it will be enough, ever could be enough, that Jesus is “the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). At the same time, we easily understand and echo Martha and Mary, who were both accusing angrily and confessing hopefully when they said, “Lord, if you had been here . . .” (John 11:21, 32).

As John tells it, Lazarus has been in the tomb four days by the time Jesus arrives. By then the whole village is awash in grief. When Jesus weeps too, they are amazed at his loving devotion: here is a strong sign of connection, a visible reminder that Jesus is truly present among human community, not above it. In the end, Jesus does what we could never imagine was even a remote possibility. He calls to the one entombed; he summons life, like the Spirit blowing over the valley in Ezekiel. God is up to something! Here, a sign of signs: God is making all things new.

New life is emerging from the tombs of our world and from the shadowed corners of our hearts. May Jesus’ resurrecting power be felt deep in our own bones!
