The meetings at Rancho Mirage in California set for Monday and Tuesday will be the first summit of its kind for the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations on U.S. soil. Its special nature is intended to show the Obama administration’s commitment to countering growing Chinese influence in a region that is home to 620 million people and a $2.6 trillion econ- omy. Southeast Asian nations have benefited from increased trade and investment stemming from their giant neighbor’s economic rise but many are wary of China achieving overweening influence. The U.S., meanwhile, has an interest in maintaining freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, a crucial global trade route. The summit is meant to send a signal that the U.S. values ASEAN, said U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, using the acronym for the Southeast Asian grouping. “We are going to be engaged in Southeast Asia, we’re going to be engaged in working with the nations of the Asia Pacific to clear rules of the road on the various issues of common interest that we share with them,” he said. The Southeast Asian nations of Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam are already part of the U.S.-led Trans Pacific Partnership trade pact that is awaiting ratification by national parliaments. The agreement eliminates many tariffs and also imposes minimum labor standards on member nations as part of U.S. efforts to set rules for trade and business in the region and beyond. A Radyo Inquirer report said the National Mapping and Resource Information (Namria), a map- ping agency under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, found the new islands mostly in Mindanao, bring the total islands in the archipelago to about 7,500. DENR Secretary made the announcement in his speech during the Philippine Environment Summit at the SMC Convention Center in Pasay City on Wednesday, the report said. Namria deputy administra- tor Jose Cabanuyan Jr. was quoted as saying that the islands were discovered through a gadget called Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar. The report said the new technology was able to count the islands, which were previously perceived to be part of a big island, as separate land masses. A landmass can be con- sidered an island only if it is above sea level and high tide and can support plant or animal life, the report added. The program kickedoff with the singing of two national anthems(Philippines & Kuwait) followed by a deeplyfelt prayer from Ms. Rosela Dalisay. To heatup the already f laming red ballroom,Cossette Sy, CIA Diva, rendered an intenselove song at the excitement of everyone

KUWAIT: After posting significant victory and snatching the individualhigh game, Fiery Thunders ascended from twelfth to sixth place whileAsian Air Safari by capturing the second week highest score landed in abetter spot from fifth to second rank in the second week of thePhilippine Bowling Association in Kuwait 1st Season Team Tournament2016 at the Cozmo Bowling Center in Kheifan. Other teams who postedvictories were Scavengers, NUSANTARA, Original Pin Killers, Lady Keglersand Oman Exchange who played bye.

The clash between the Lady Keglers team and Swooping Eagles wit-nessed an inanimate game. The Swooping Eagles looked like a docilebird in their 3-game series although winning the second game 915-790/863-903/908-800 (2711-2493). With the win the Italian boundkeglers maintained holding the prime post while the Eagles was downfrom fourth to seventh position. Top scorers of the winning team wereMarjorie Mercado and Alma Turley with 508 apiece followed by BlancaSambajon (495), Sonia Mathews (470) and Aris de Guzman (463) whilethe losing Eagles’ bowlers were John Caldwell (472), Angie Bush (450), RizRoque (444), Alonzo Bush (412), Danny Solis and Darrel Sullivan.

The encounter between the rated teams, Fiery Dragons and COZMO(2747-2409) become an apathy when the later played without rebuff andwas annihilated in their 3-game series 902-853/913-811/907/745. FieryDragons’ posting its second week win jumped and joined the elite group

while COZMO was ejected. Grabbing the individual high game fromGreg Melancon (244-235), Camilo Baker lll (634) piloted his team for thewin, followed by Mar Evangelista (462), Eddie Pena, Moises Amahan,Laras Nitikusumo, Maria Perly Virly and Mandy Manalo.
