Once-in-a-lifetime eventInternationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro’s Field of Light, inspired by a trip to Uluru 25 years ago, is installed in a remote desert area within sight of majestic Uluru. It is the largest Field of Light installation to date, with Munro and his team installing more than 50,000 slender stems crowned with radiant frosted-glass spheres.

Bruce MunroBorn in London in 1959, Bruce Munro’s passion for light as a medium began in Australia, where he was inspired by Australia’s natural light and landscape. He is noted for his immersive site-specific installations that employ light to evoke emotional response, often in an outdoor context and on a monumental scale.

Experience the Field of LightRise early before sunrise to travel the short distance to a desert location overlooking Uluru. Your Driver Guide will provide insights and background into this emotive and unique desert art installation.

Under the cover of darkness you’re invited to wander through the pathways that encompass the 50,000 spheres of light in the desert, before making your way up the hill to the Dune Top viewing area. Watch the amazing transformation of colours and life as the Red Centre awakens, while enjoying tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Then as the first rays of sunlight creep across the desert sky, gaze in awe as the sun rises in the distance behind Uluru, flooding the landscape, including Kata Tjuta behind you, with light.

Sunrise over the Red CentreYou’ll have an incredible view through stunning desert landscape as the sun rises over the Red Centre. As the natural light brightens the landscape, the Field of Light will dim for the day. Capture some amazing photos from this unique raised location, which allows you to view both Uluru and Kata Tjuta in all their natural glory.

Historic OverviewOn your journey, your experienced Driver Guide will share with you fascinating stories of the geology, history and culture of Kata Tjuta, which is deeply sacred to the local Anangu people.

Sunrise at Kata TjutaWhile sipping a warming cup of tea or coffee you can enjoy the wonder that is Kata Tjuta at sunrise. Each passing minute brings something new as the domes continue to change colour with the rising sun.

Kata Tjuta (the Olgas)Kata Tjuta simply translated means ‘heads many’ and given the 36 steep-sided domes of Kata Tjuta, it is aptly named. The area is sacred under Anangu men’s law and under this law, details of many stories of Kata Tjuta are not known except to initiated men.

Valley of the WindsOn arrival at Kata Tjuta you’ll commence the walk to the Valley of the Winds, heading first to the Karu lookout. With views across the many domes of Kata Tjuta and out into the sacred Anangu men’s area, you’ll be in awe of this natural wonder. Next stop is the Karingana lookout. This walk can be a little challenging, but well worth the effort. It takes you down into a timeless haven within the domes through trickling creek beds. At times of extreme heat the walk may not be available, but will be substituted with an alternative walk.

Shorter walks are also available for those not wanting to walk to the second lookout.
