Fault

There are many different kinds of faults. Thrust fault is one of the types, this is described as a break in the Earth’s crust across where there has been movement. A person can tell it is a thrust fault because the older rocks are placed above the younger rocks.

Mechanical Weathering

Mechanical weathering- The physical disintegration of rock, resulting in smaller fragments.

The water in this stream is flowing over rocks which results in mechanical weathering of those rocks.

This stream is located in the mountains of Colorado.

Chemical Weathering

Chemical weathering- The process by which the internal structure of a mineral is altered by the removal and/or addition of elements.

This old truck has experienced all kinds of different weather conditions over a long period of time making it rust. This is an example of chemical weathering.

Mass Wasting and Erosion

Mass wasting- The down slope movement of rock, regolith, and soil under the direct influence of gravity.

Erosion- The incorporation and transportation of material by a mobile agent, such as water, wind, or ice.

This water fall in Cherry County Nebraska is a good example of erosion, the water is transporting material to another location.

This little landslide in Scottsbluff Nebraska is an example of an erosion.

Sedimentary Environment- Continental

Continental environments are dominated by the erosion and deposition associated with streams.

This stream in the mountains of Colorado is an example of a continental environment.

Sedimentary Environment- Marine

There are two types of marine environments, shallow and deep. Shallow marine reaches the depths of about 200 meters and extends from the shore to the outer edge of the continental shelf. The deep marine lies seaward of the continental shelf and the water is deeper than 200 meters.

The ocean is an example of a deep marine environment.

Sedimentary Environment- Transitional

Transitional environment is the shoreline between the other two environments, marine and continental.

Where the water and sand meet at Pismo Beach is an example of transitional environment.

Skyscraper

This skyscraper in New York City is an example of a practical use of geology.
