Industry. Commerce. Culture. Education. Entertainment. Opportunity. From the very beginning, GreenvillesWest End has been a terminus o activity and energy. Tis historic district has seen its share o good and bad, allthe while maintaining its distinctive character.

Born o cotton and textile mills, the West Ends rst true development came in 1816 with the constructiono Vardry McBees saw, our and corn mills on the banks o the Reedy River. Settlement o the area near the

intersection o Main, Pendleton and Augusta Streets soon ollowed. By the 1850s, the West End blossomed withthe arrival o Furman University and the rst rail lines. Te Greenville and Columbia railroad cut travel time toCharleston rom a week to three days, and travelers could reach Columbia in a single day. Te towns only depotbecame a natural center or cotton storage and distribution. By 1882, three textile mills - Vardry, Camperdownand Hugenot - had set the stage or what would become the nations textile capital. Te convergence o education, transportation and industry inuenced a surge o residential and commercial development. By the turn o thecentury, the West End was a thriving commercial district.

Te 20th century brought enormous changes to Greenville, as textile mills moved out o the city proper andindustry shited rom cotton to sot drink manuacturing and bottling. Automobiles lessened the reliance on railtransportation and allowed people to live arther rom city amenities. In 1958, Furman relocated to its currentPoinsett Highway location. By the 1970s, the textile industry was being crippled by oreign imports and many othe communitys mills were orced into extinction.

As the development o downtown has progressed, the West End has now come ull-circle, and its uture promisesto be one o lasting richness. Neighborhood revitalization began in the 1990s through the commitment o thecity and private investors. In the last six years alone, the West End has beneted rom well over $100 million ininvestment including the $24.5 million Governors School or the Arts and Humanities, $13 million Falls Parkrenovation, $50 million RiverPlace development, $15 million baseball stadium, and the planned $46 millionSalvation Army Kroc Community Center.

Lively and progressive, cosmopolitan with small-town air. Te West End is once again a hub o activity - thejewel o the citys arts and entertainment district - and a community with a strength that is grounded in the history

    and heart o Greenville.

    a long tradition o

    B A s e B A L L

Baseball runs deep through Greenvilles veins and has been an important part o its heritage or over a century.Sprouting rom mill culture, local baseball quickly grew rom a community passion to national prominence.

Te Upstates rst baseball teams were an organic extension o the mill lie that dominated the area. Work at the millswas long and arduous, and mill owners soon recognized the need or recreational and social activities or workers.Already a passion amongst mill residents, mill owners saw baseball as a way to strengthen the mill community

and oster sel-control, discipline and morale. Te rst games were staged on makeshit elds and were more thanordinary baseball games - hundreds gathered to watch their team, participate in sack races, indulge in barbecue andenjoy live music. Tese simple sporting events became the heartbeat o close-knit mill communities.

But it wasnt long beore extile League baseball became a serious sport - showcasing some serious talent. It was atGreenvilles Brandon Mill that young Joe Jackson rst wielded his mighty bat, catching the eye o major league scoutsand the imaginations o baseball ans everywhere. Blessed with one o the most incredible natural swings in thehistory o the game, Joe became Greenvilles rst proessional player.

Greenvilles rst proessional team arrived in 1907 - the oddly named Greenville Eskimos. Te teamchanged its name the next year to the Spinners to better reect the towns booming textile industry.

Aside rom two brie interruptions, proessional baseball has been a major presence in Greenvilleever since. During its history, Greenville teams have been aliated with nine major league clubs- the Washington Senators (1939-41), Chicago White Sox (1946), Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-50),Los Angeles Dodgers (1961-62), Milwaukee Braves (1963-64), New York Mets (1965-66), exas

Rangers (1972), Atlanta Braves (1984-2004), and Boston Red Sox (1967-71, 2005).

A new era in this rich history has begun with the introduction o the Greenville Bombers and the development oa $15 million downtown baseball eld plus a city investment o approximately $10 million or improvements ininrastructure and streetscaping. Located in the historic West End district, the baseball stadium will be reminiscent oBostons Fenway Park - predominantly brick with an industrial touch that invokes Greenvilles textile mill days. Te

acility will seat over 5,000 and have 17 luxury suites.

Te new West End stadium will bring Greenville baseball back to its roots - back to its home - and will be theimpetus or a West End renaissance. Much like its extile League past, this new baseball era promises to bolster strongcommunity ties and provide a ocal point or social activity and entertainment in our town.
