ow fibre optics can be used in our daily lives?
W
hy fibre optics?
H
ow convenient are fibre optics?
H
ow fibre optics changing our life and benefit us?
PRINCIPLES OF HOW IT WORKS
COMPONENT OF FIBER OPTICS
C
ore - Thin glass center of the fiber where the light travels
C
ladding - Outer optical material surrounding the core
that reflects the light back into the core
B
uffer coating - Plastic coating that protects the fiber
from damage and moisture
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FIBER OPTICS
S
ingle-mode fibers have small cores and transmit
infrared laser light (wavelength = 1,300 to 1,550 nm).
Multi-mode fibers have larger cores and transmit
infrared light (wavelength = 850 to 1,300 nm) from
LEDs.
THEORY OF FIBER OPTICS
T
otal internal reflection : If the reflection index is lower
on the other side of the boundary and the incident angle is
greater than the critical angle, no light can pass through and all
of the light is reflected.
WHAT WAYS CAN FIBER OPTICS USED IN?
C
ommunication
M
edical
O
ther use
FIBER OPTICS USED IN COMMUNICATION
C
ATV(cable television) : provide TV programs via radio frequency
(RF) signals through optical fibers.
D
ata Transmission Fiber Optics : a sending and receiving of data
from point to point via a network.
I
nternet system : Internet use the standard Internet protocol suite
(TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It’s mainly linked by
optical networking technologies.
MEDICAL AND OTHER USE OF OPTICAL FIBER
F
iberscope : examine small components in tightly packed
equipment
O
ptical fibers sensors : measure strain, temperature, pressure
and other quantities by modifying a fiber
I
llumination : Light tubes or light pipes are used for
transporting or distributing natural or artificial light.
HOW GOOD IT IS ?
Cost -
1.Fiber optics glass cost less as compared to copper wires
Efficiency -
1. Speed of data transfer is faster.
2. Light signals degrade lesser than copper conductors.
3. Light signals require lesser power to be transmitted.
Convenience -
1. Less weight and more flexible than copper wires.
2. Easier to carry, bundle and set up.
3. Do not heat up and are non-flammable.
ANALYSIS OF THE ONLINE SURVEY RESULTS
C
onducted through Qualtrics
O
ver 80 respondents aged from 18 to 45-year-old
1
2 questions involved, ranged from personal habits to
business companies

6
4% of respondents vote yes
F
ibre optics is a useful tool
P
roviding faster speed
DO YOU THINK FIBER OPTICS IS CONVENIENT ?
A
majority of people vote yes
F
ibre optics is well-used
F
ibre optics is more compact, less
space is used
DO YOU KNOW FIBER OPTICS CAN BE USED IN MEDICAL SERVICES ?
M
any respondents vote no
M
edical services with fibre
optics are so new to
people
N
ot a well-known use
HOW MUCH DO YOU SATISFY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF FIBER OPTICS ? (1-
LEAST, 5-MOST)
P
eople mostly are satisfied
with the fibre optics
I
t is convenient and does
not cost much
WHICH ONE DO YOU PREFER FOR INTERNET CONNECTION?
- People love using fiber optics much more than copper wire
- People are generally adapted to using fiber optics
DO YOU KNOW THE THEORY BEHIND FIBER OPTICS TECHNOLOGY ?
S
ome people don’t know the
basic principles of the
operation of fiber optics
P
eople just focus on how the
tool benefits them basically
DO YOU THINK FIBER OPTICS IS A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN THE MODERN TECHNOLOGY HISTORY ?
T
he discovery of fiber
optics is brilliant
T
his innovation signifies the
huge improvement in the
modern technology history
~THE END~
Thank you for watching
