FHCA 2014 Annual Conference & Trade Show  CE Session #51  Preceptor Refresher Course Thursday, July 10  4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Canary 1  Leadership/Management   Upon completion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:   satisfy the Florida statutory requirement for a refresher course;  summarize the concepts of mentorship, teaching techniques, AIT program requirements, expectations and needs of AITs and preceptors; and  describe the domains of practice.  Seminar Description:  Board of Nursing Home Administrators’ regulations pursuant to 64B1016.0025(2), FAC, require all Florida Nursing Home Administrators with Preceptor Certification to take a twohour Preceptor Refresher Course upon license renewal every two years. This course will meet that requirement. If you are considering becoming a Preceptor, this session will also provide an overview to help you understand the needs and expectations of AITs and Preceptors. FHCA’s Peggy Rigsby and Carol Berkowitz, will moderate this session as experts, including current and past members of the Board of Nursing Home Administrators, probable cause panel members and experienced Preceptors share their knowledge.  Presenter Bio(s):  Peggy Rigsby serves as Director of Government Affairs for Florida Health Care Association. She is responsible for tracking state and federal laws and rules and assisting members in complying with requirements. In addition, she tracks legislation that affects long term care, and works with legislators, staff, members and lobbyists to implement FHCA’s Legislative Agenda. Peggy liaisons with the FHCA Legislative Committee and the FHCA Rules and Regulations Committee to coordinate and prioritize issues important to FHCA members, as well as reviewing and modifying new and existing rules and laws.  Carol Berkowitz, Esq. joined FHCA on April 4, bringing her advocacy, public policy, legal and legislative expertise, along with an important understanding of skilled nursing and assisted living facility regulations. Carol was previously with LeadingAge Florida and has worked for the Florida Dental Association and the Department of HRS. Carol has a Master's Degree in Gerontology and brings with her over 25 years of public policy experience.  Karen Goldsmith, Esq. is a partner in Goldsmith & Grout, PA, and has been Florida Health Care Association’s Legal Consultant since 1980. She is actively involved on the American Health Care Association Legal Subcommittee and served as its chair for three years. She is also a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and served as chair of its Long Term Care Division for two terms.

• Must attend 6 hour approved Preceptor training and receive certificate

• Must apply for Preceptor within 3 years of completing 6 hour course

• Must complete oral interview with BNHA member

• May not supervise member of immediate family

Must have a Baccalaureate Degree with major in health care administration, or 60 semester hours in specified subjects, plus

1000 hour AIT Program, or College/university affiliate internship

AIT REQUIREMENTS(CONTINUED)

• Baccalaureate Degree not in health care administration requires: 2000 hour AIT Program, or 1 year

management experience (setting specific)

• Submit AIT application, with fee, to BNHA under DOH

• BNHA must approve training facility and must be notified if it changes

• Must work 30-50 hours/week with at least 6 hours/day between 7 am – 10 pm

• Must also work between 10 pm – 7 am at least 40 hours but not more than 160 hours a year

PRECEPTOR CHECKLIST

____Active Nursing Home Administrator license in Florida ____Practicing for 3 of the last 5 years in any jurisdiction ____No disciplinary action during that time ____Taken the 6 hour Preceptor training course within 3 years of application to the Board ____Completed Preceptor Certification application Form DOH/NHA 014 and submitted to DOH with the appropriate fee and a copy of the Certificate of Completion of the six hour Preceptor Course. ____After application Preceptor applicant must interview with a BNHA member and be recommended for certification. For the interview, the applicant must send the BNHA member a copy of the facility’s last inspection report and plan of correction. ____Cannot supervise a member of immediate family ____Must have direct management control of facility ____Preceptors can earn up to 10 hours of continuing education in a biennium when an Administrator in training completes an approved program. ___ Reports must be submitted 2 weeks after the end of the 90 day quarter ___Original signature on reports; initial each page, including DOH form and narrative
