2 VISION2020WEST

From the ModeratorWelcome to the desert! Thanks for taking time in your schedule to join us for Vision2020West – the National Conference of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches. I believe you won’t be disappointed!

We’ve arranged an array of great speakers to challenge your walk with God. You’ll find practical workshops to help you implement strategies for church-planting, leadership development, and integrated ministries. You’ll also want to take advantage of the ministry semi-nars we offer on Saturday.

That’s just the beginning! This conference provides great opportunities to enjoy meals with friends, prayer times for your own soul, and a glimpse of God’s work in our churches in this nation and around the world.

And I hope your golf game is as hot as the temps – because your first round of golf is FREE – thanks to the hospitality of Grace Schools and Grace Village.

Have a wonderful week!

General Conference InformationTHEME: Vision2020West Leadership ConferenceDATE: July 28–August 1, 2012 LOCATION: Renaissance Esmeralda Resort, Indian Wells, California

A Special Note about Vision2020West Conference Vision2020West is all about developing leaders, planting churches, and integrated gospel ministry. Last summer, Vision2020Now in Wooster, Ohio, launched this three-way focus under the banner of “The Dawn of a New Day.” We continue that focus this year with exciting speakers and seminars as well as meal events designed to share the victories and challenges of some of the ministries of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches. Please let us know how we can make this conference the best ever for you.

While you are blessed and encouraged by the conference, be sure to have fun together. There’s lots to see and do in the Palm Springs area and the schedule is designed to give you time in the cooler evenings to see the area together. Don’t forget, the best part of conference happens in the hallways and informal gather-ings. We picked this resort because it has ample spaces to hang out and talk or pray. See you around!

— Tom Avey, FGBC Coordinator

Vicki Johnson has spent her career teaching English as a second language to immigrants in Southern California.

“I love my job,” says the member of the Bell-flower, California, Brethren Church (Tom Hocking, pastor). “I go to work to relax,” she adds. “I’m there for my students.”

She’s had a heart for internationals since her days as a student at California State University, Long Beach, where she earned a degree in language and composition and helped begin the International Student Ministry at the Long Beach, California, Grace Brethren Church, where she then attended. (She went on to earn a master’s degree in linguistics.)

Today, she teaches four days a week for the Long Beach school system, leading classes of 10 students at a time in basic literacy concepts. She also knows many who grace her classroom need to know about Jesus.

Still, she is quick to emphasize, “I am not paid to proselytize.”

Outside the classroom, she and her husband, Guy, a literacy coach for Los Angeles Unified School District, invite her students to their home during the Christ-mas holidays. “For many of them, it is the first time they see inside an American home,” she says. The evening includes a presentation of the Gospel.

“We’ve become friends with a few of [them],” she adds, “and have seen them come to know Christ.”

Last year, several women asked her to help them learn to knit. So they began to gather every Friday morning at a coffee shop in Cerritos to work on various projects.

“We have a great time,” Vicki says. It has become a mix of Korean and Chinese women, with a few American Caucasians. The focus of their meeting is to learn English, but she also wants to use the time as outreach. She encourages most English-speaking women who ask to participate to seek knitting lessons at a local yarn shop. “I don’t want it to get too big,” she admits.

She’s cautiously begun to initiate spiritual conversations with the ladies, knowing that the exchange will be better received once a friendship is established. “Some of the Korean women are Christians,” she notes.

This native Californian’s heart continues to beat for the disadvantaged and dispossessed that come from around the world to seek a better life in the U.S.

“I think these people are the most over-looked in cities,” she says. “[Most] people just don’t see them.”

It started as a way to get rid of unwanted items for the members at Dimond Grace Fellowship in Anchorage, Alaska, but it’s developed into a bi-annual tradition that blesses the people of the 49th state’s largest city.

The church hosts an annual garage sale with a twist. Instead of selling items to raise funds for special projects, they give them away.

At their October 2011 garage sale, held in a tent with heaters and barbeque grills warming the cool air, they gave away close to $20,000 worth of merchandise. Also available, for free, were hot dogs, chips, and soft drinks.

“They (the customers) always want to make a donation,” says Pastor Chris Ball. “But then the free part of the garage sale is, everything we bring in, we give abso-lutely free. And it’s amazing.”

No funds are accepted for “purchases” the day of the sale, though individuals donate items throughout the year to be included in the next event.

The congregation plans all year for the two garage sales, which are held at different member’s homes in the spring and in the fall. The changing location helps host families identify with the church and provides oppor-tunities to share Christ with their neighbors.

While it takes all week to set up the sale, the actual event goes quickly. “We start at 9:00 in the morning, and we’re done either by noon or 1:00,” he adds. “And quite honestly, about two hours in, half the stuff is gone.”

The sale is understandably popular. They’ve had at least 300 family units attend each time, all counted by a man sitting at the entrance with a clicker.

As a result, the congregation has developed a reputation for being a giving church.

“We do it in Jesus’ name,” says the pastor. “We include a Gospel tract and a little information about our church, but just will not accept any donations at that time,” he adds. “We want our people to be able to say, ‘Jesus gave us to freely. We want to freely give to you.’”

At Grace Community Church (Pastor Phil Bryant) in Surrey, B.C., Einer and Laura Teng are an answer to prayer. But they are more likely to say the church is an answer to their own prayers.

The couple had been involved in an evan-gelical ethnic Chinese church that was a 25 minute drive from their home. But they knew their life was now in the Vancouver suburb where Einer has taught intermedi-ate school for the last 15 years and they are raising their two children.

One summer Sunday they decided to attend the “movie theater” church, the one they’d seen advertised on a leaflet that came in their mail. “It’s right here in the community,” says Einer. “We walked there in 15 minutes on the first day.”

It wasn’t that they were looking for a new church. They just knew that God was nudging them to something different.

As they began to attend Grace Commu-nity Church, a Grace Brethren congrega-tion which meets in the Strawberry Hills Cinema, they continued to seek guidance. “We were praying that God would show a

lot of affirmation,” Laura recalls. She also remembers the sense of peace and confirma-tion they both felt in receiving an answer was “very overwhelming.”

On the flip side, the leadership of Grace Community had been praying for estab-lished, mature Christians to become involved in the ministry that was attracting many new believers.

“I don’t know about mature,” says Laura. “How can you call yourself mature? Experi-enced,” she adds with a smile.

In the two years since the family has attended Community of Grace, they have immersed themselves in ministry. She’s run the Sunday morning PowerPoint slides, he’s serving on the finance committee, and they’ve both been involved in the children’s ministries.

“I think that by God providing this new church family was an extreme answer to our prayers,” says Laura, adding that it feels “weird” to know someone was praying for them. “I would just attribute it to God matching, tongue and groove. You know it’s of God when it’s clearly not of your own doing.”

Pastor Jesús Munoz has a simple plan for developing leaders among the Spanish-speaking churches of central Florida.

He simply follows Jesus Christ.

But he admits it took him awhile to figure that out.

“One of the things I learned is how Jesus was working in reaching the disciples,” he recalls. “It was very frustrating, seeing He called the disciples, they followed Him, and they started doing great things.”

That was until Jesús read the Gospels in chronological order. He noticed that Christ was preaching, teaching, and going through the neighborhoods for a year and a half before He called His disciples.

“Then He called them. He asked them, ‘Come and see what I am doing,’” Jesús stresses, noting that He didn’t allow them to do anything, just to observe. It’s a pattern

he’s followed as he has planted Hispanic Grace Brethren congregations in Florida.

He says he watches then “I call them to come with me, to work alongside me,” he says. “And, little by little, I start giving them responsibilities and seeing how they react in certain things and correcting things along the way, giving them more responsi-bilities and to see how far they can go for themselves.”

Javier Forero, who helped plant Iglesia Comunal La Esperanza in Valrico, Fla., and is now succeeding Munoz as pastor, says the time has been beneficial. “We used to spend a lot of time together,” he said last May, as Munoz and his wife, Rosa, prepared to move to Atlanta, Ga., where they will work with Encompass World Partners.

“He’s been teaching me, day by day, God’s Word and the way that we should apply God’s Word in our lives,” adds Javier.

grandma at Easter time. So we said, ‘this is church, so let’s figure out how to do this together,’” recalls Wells.

“At that time we had about 30 people, most of which were new believers coming out of backgrounds like drug and alcohol addictions and broken families,” he says. “It was really an amazing work of God to pull this group of people together.” East Gate Bible Church started that spring with that group. “We’re on the east side of Ashland,” says Wells. “We want to be a gateway into the family of God and we want to be focused on the Bible.”

It’s a congregation that most likely would not feel comfortable in a traditional Grace Brethren church. “Out of all the other good churches in Ashland, there was no thriving, Bible-believing, Gospel-saturated church for this large segment of the population,” stresses Wells, who saw the church begin in 2006. “[There was no] place where they would feel welcome, and they would feel like this was theirs.”

“We took the church to the people and we allowed it to become what they wanted it to become,” he concludes.

Nathan Wells was getting restless. He’d had a successful ministry as youth pastor at the Grace Brethren Church in Ashland, Ohio, but he felt a “rumbling” to do something differ-ent. That agitation led to the development of a unique church in a needy area of town.

“I noticed a low income apartment complex down the road,” he recalls. “So we started taking the teens there to care for the kids that lived there. The kids responded to our teens,” he says, noting that it “blew up pretty fast into a children’s ministry of it’s own.” As the young people were working with the kids, Wells started talking with their parents. Despite some negative push back, he started a Bible study with three adults in the manager’s home. “It snowballed,” he remem-bers. “It was obviously a God thing.” Within the first six months, a number of people had accepted Christ as their savior.

As Easter approached that year, the group began to ask about services on the holiday – one when many people attend church, even though they aren’t religious. “People were saying, ‘what are we going to do for church,’ because they live in North America and evidently they went to church with their

Seminars are on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. and include offerings focused on Integrated Ministry, Leadership Development and Church Planting.

Sunday, July 29 2:15 P.M.Holistic Mission: Caring for Physical and Spiritual Needs Locally and Globally You have the opportunity to be a part of the Red Cross in your backyard as well as around the world. It is our mandate from God to care for people on both sides of that cross. Learn how to build a holistic plan that cares for the physical and spiritual needs of people in your world. Haiti will be the story, but local-global impact will be the thrust. Come learn how to set up your personal life, your small groups and even your church for holistic and compassion ministries. Led by Dan O’Deens in Corsica (3rd floor).

The Grace Clinic Story By God’s grace the ‘Grace Clinic’ model has been replicated to five unique, indepen-dent, faith-based free medical clinics in five years. Using medicine as a vehicle to share the hope that we have in Jesus while equipping the volunteers from the body of Christ to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” Is your community in need of free medical care? Is your church in need of a place to serve? Consider starting a ‘Grace Clinic.’ Led by Dr. Kevin Doherty and Dr. Kent Doherty in Gibraltar (3rd floor).

Implanting an Equipping Culture: Helping Every Member Rise to His Full Potential for Christ. In an equipping culture, ministry is not just what leaders do for the members of the body, but through them. Led by members of the E-Net Team, and featuring three Equipping Churches in Stir (1st floor, South side).

Planting Legacy Churches with No Money Legacy churches are churches that go by many other names: attractional, traditional, institutional… Many in our family of churches are this kind. Typically it costs a lot of money to plant these kinds of churches. What if you were able to plant this kind of church without any dedicated mission funding? We are able to plant legacy churches without money using our Gatherer/Shepherd/Elder church starting process (GSE). In this session we will overview how to use the GSE and what next steps look like in your application of the GSE. Led by Dr. Tony Webb in Mountain View (2rd floor, South side)

Process Evangelism and Church Planting: Thinking Through Your Evangelism Philosophy and Building It Intentionally Into Your Model of Church. Your commitment to the gospel is rock solid. You want your church to be focused on evangelism and even church planting, however, it’s not easy to build this focus

into the DNA of your church. Nathan Bryant will help you know how to build these values into your church. In Monte Carlo (3rd floor)

Monday, July 30 2:15 P.M.Meeting Needs Both Physically and Spiritually: A Food Pantry Ministry How do you get a food pantry ministry started? How can a food pantry ministry build relationships that become spiritual in nature? How do you get people excited about serving in a food pantry ministry? How do you gain the trust of the commu-nity in which your church building is located? Does the Bible address such things as feeding the poor? Led by Ron Smals and Aaron Jones in Valencia I (1st floor).

A Medical Practitioner’s Look at How Christ Integrated Helping and Ministry Christ, the Master Physician, gave us incredible illustrations of how He integrated His ministry with meeting the physical needs of people. Come join this class as we look at three life-changing examples from Africa. The principles gleaned are transferable within our North American context. Led by Mike Taylor in Valencia II (1st floor).

Intentional Leader Building: Finding and Growing Our Future Ministry Leaders Churches are led by the last generation, but can and must intentionally construct the leaders of the next generation. Is there a pattern that we can follow to construct leaders? How do we deliberately mold lay leaders and build future pastors and missionaries? What principles and practices produce solid results? Led by Dr. Randall Smith in Valencia VI (1st floor).

Praying for the United States of America! Are you praying for our country? Do you have a plan? We are calling on every Grace Brethren Church to identify an area of the country for prayer that God would raise up workers for the harvest. Led by Dr. Tim Boal in Valencia VI (1st floor).

Thinking of Starting a New Church? Seven Things To Consider A couple of decades ago a team of young men and women moved to the Toronto area of Canada to ignite a church planting movement in Canada. Four churches later they have learned many lessons. Nathan Bryant lists seven important questions to ask before you start a new church. In Valencia V (1st floor).

tueSday, July 31 2:15 P.M.How God is Planting Grace Brethren Churches in Low Income Apartment Complexes Pastors Dan Allan and Nathan Wells had a vision for reaching a culture of their town that would never enter the doors of their church building. They started a church in a local apartment complex and lives were transformed. Soon God opened opportuni-ties in an apartment complex in the next town. And it looks like there will be many more opportunities to come. Learn from Nathan about what they are learning and see a new opportunity for the gospel in your area. Location: Valencia I (1st floor)

The Sacrificial Poet The church has its own subculture. We have Christian bookstores, Christian radio, Christian sports leagues, Christian T-shirts, Christian campgrounds, and Christian cruises. None of this is inherently bad, but is there life outside the bubble? Is it safe to venture beyond the walls and into the world? Ten years ago John Shirk wandered into a poetry slam at a bar. He was impressed with the powerful artistry he heard and decided to become a “regular neighbor” at the open mic. This session will discuss his journey as a Christian integrated in the world of art. Led by John Shirk in Valencia II (1st floor).

Transforming Churches through Ministry Teams Turning committees into functioning ministry teams opens the door for allow-ing each part of the body to do its work. Led by members of the E-Net Team, and featuring three Equipping Churches in Mountain View (2nd floor, South side).

Regional Church Planting Movements – Is One Right For Your Region? Let Us Talk About It In VisionOhio we are convinced that regional movements are the way to focus our energy in church planting. In this session we focus on how to move a regional move-ment ahead - even if there is not anything happening on the ground at this time. What is necessary? Those willing to explore this idea, a passion for lost people and the willingness to move ahead. Both Stetzer and Logan project that it takes 7 to 13 years to get regional matters under way - we might as well get started, shouldn’t we? Led by Dr. Tony Webb in Valencia V (1st floor).

How to Create Additional Income Streams for Your Ministry Want more money for ministry? Want to help fund church planting? Want to help farmers in Southeast Asia? Want to do all this at the same time! Dr. Tim Boal will show you how this can work in your church. In Valencia VI (1st floor).
