La violoniste Chantal Juillet quÕon a connuecomme violon solo � lÕOrchestre symphonique deMontr�al passe d�sormais les mois de juillet et ao�tdans le nord de lÕEtat de New-York, o� elle occupele poste de directrice du Festival de musique dechambre du Saratoga Performing Arts Centre. CÕestl�, que, lÕ�t� dernier, La Scena Musicale recueillaitses propos concernant ce festival unique en songenre.

Le Saratoga Performing Arts Centre ( SPAC),situ� dans le Parc de Saratoga a �t� construit en1966, sur lÕemplacement dÕune station thermale. LeSPAC est la r�sidence dÕ�t� attitr�e de lÕOrchestrede Philadelphie. LÕid�e dÕy faire de la musique dechambre remonte � 1990. Cette ann�e-l�, lepr�sident de SPAC, Herb Chesbrough, voulantprofiter de la pr�sence des musiciens de lÕOrchestredurant leur p�riode de r�sidence, confia � Juillet laresponsabilit� de mettre sur pied une s�rie deconcerts de musique de chambre. La premi�reann�e, malgr� de tr�s bons concerts, on ne r�ussitpas � attirer beaucoup de monde - Mme Juillet sepr�parait � ce que lÕexp�rience ne soit pasrenouvel�e. A sa grande surprise, HerbChesbrough lui confia plut�t lÕorganisation dÕunfestival de musique de chambre permanent.Pendant les ann�es qui ont suivi on a vu le festivalprendre son essor. AujourdÕhui, Chantal Juillet setrouve � r�unir les meilleurs des solistes invit�s delÕOrchestre pour des concerts qui remportent un�norme succ�s.

Le festival loge dans le Spa Little Theatre, unemagnifique demeure victorienne qui poss�de unebonne acoustique. Pour toute la dur�e du festival,Juillet dispose enti�rement du lieu: Ç Parcons�quent, si jÕai un pianiste qui a envie de faireune pratique � trois heures du matin, il nÕy a pas deprobl�meÈ. Le Spa Little Theatre poss�de 500places qui se vendent toutes des mois � lÕavance etJuillet a tent� dÕimaginer des fa�ons dÕaccueillir unplus large public (comme la reprise de concerts oula pr�sentation de concerts dans une salle plusgrande). Cependant, pour lÕinstant, le festival restedans le Little Theatre.

Chaque ann�e, Juillet �tablit le programme deson festival en tenant compte de celui delÕOrchestre, cÕest-�-dire des solistes invit�s. Elleleur t�l�phone pour leur demander quelles oeuvresils aimeraient interpr�ter. Cette ann�e, parmi ceux-ci figurent des musiciens de renomm�e

internationale tels Sarah Chang, Jean-YvesThibaudet, Itzhak Perlman, Nelson Freire, TrulsM¿rk, Martha Argerich, Yefim Bronfman etFrederica Von Stade. La plupart dÕentre eux sontravis dÕavoir lÕoccasion de faire de la musique dechambre en compagnie de musiciens quÕilsnÕauraient pas eu lÕoccasion de conna�treautrement.

Juillet reconnait que le festival nÕest possibleque parce que les musiciens se r�servent toujoursquelques journ�es de libert� entre les engagementsde lÕ�t�. Ils se montrent heureux de passer unejourn�e de plus � Saratoga car il sÕagit dÕun lieumagnifique et paisible o� ils peuvent prendre unpeu de repos en famille. ÇNos cachets ne sont pastr�s �lev�s mais personne ne refuse notreinvitation. Ils sÕen r�jouissent È, commente Juillet.Le pianiste Jean-Yves Thibaudet approuve:ÇSaratoga, cÕest un moment de vacances. Je le faispour le plaisir et par amiti� pour ChantalÈ.

LÕorganisation du premier festival fut un peu�prouvante pour Juillet, mais aujourdÕhui ellemanifeste du plaisir � jongler avec les multiplesaspects de la planification, �tablir le programme,trouver les musiciens et le reste. Elle arrive �Saratoga quelques jours � lÕavance pour voir � tousles d�tails, lÕaccord du piano, le comptage des

lutrins, lÕinstallation de la machine � caf�.Rien de tout cela nÕaurait �t� possible, sans la

pr�sence fid�le des auditeurs de Saratoga. Carbien que Saratoga soit situ�e en milieu rural, Juilletest �merveill�e de lÕouverture dÕesprit dont fontpreuve les gens qui assistent aux concerts. ÇJÕaitoujours mis au programme beaucoup de musiquedu 20e si�cle - jÕai m�me propos� un festivalHindemith - mais cela nÕa jamais fait fuir lÕauditoire.En fait, les gens aiment celaÈ, commente-t-elle. Laseule fois ou Juillet a promis au public de Saratogade mettre au programme de bons vieux classiquescomme Beethoven ou Schubert, elle sÕest faitr�pondre de ne pas les ennuyer avec latraditionnelle musique classique quÕon entendpartout. ÇIls mÕont assur� quÕils voulaient entendredes oeuvres nouvelles! Je souhaiterais que tous lespublics soient aussi r�ceptifsÈ dit encore Juilletadmirative.

La grande nouvelle, cette ann�e, cÕestlÕinauguration du projet dÕenregistrement ÇMusic atSaratogaÈ par EMI. Une �quipe dÕing�nieursbritanniques arriveront au d�but du mois dÕao�tpour pr�parer le Spa Little Theatre pour lessessions dÕenregistrement. Les pianistes MarthaArgerich et Nelson Freire, le violoncelliste TrulsM¿rk, et la violoniste Chantal Juillet enregistrerontle Concerto path�tique pour 2 pianos, RumanianFolk Dances et Contrasts de Bela Bartok, ainsi quele Duo pour violon et violoncelle , op. 7, de Kodaly.Juillet est enthousiasm�e que, malgr� la crise danslÕindustrie, une compagnie sÕint�resse �lÕenregistrement de concerts de musique du 20esi�cle. La distribution internationale desenregistrements ÇMusic at SaratogaÈ aura aussilÕavantage de rehausser la r�putation de ce festivalunique.

La raison dÕ�tre du festival de Saratogademeure lÕexp�rience du concert en direct sous les�toiles. La saison quÕon nous pr�pare au SPACpromet dÕ�tre m�morable.

Saratoga, dans lÕEtat de New-York, se trouve� trois heures de route au sud de Montr�al par laroute 87. LÕOrchestre de Philadelphie est enr�sidence au SPAC du 29 juillet au 15 ao�t(U.S.$15-$45). DOREMI’s Jacob Harnoy Resurrects Classic PerformancesLa résurrection des grands classiques, au studio DOREMI

LÕing�nieur du son Jacob Harnoy est le directeur du studio de matri�age etde la maison de disques DOREMI en banlieue de Toronto.Pr�sentement, Harnoy est lÕun des experts les plus avanc�s dans la

restauration sur disques compacts de vieux enregistrements sonores, des 78tours pour la plupart. Son studio audionum�rique, DOREMI, se sp�cialise dansla remise en leur �tat premier des h�ritages laiss�s par les grands musiciensclassiques tels que les violonistes Jascha Heifetz, David Oistrakh et NathanMilstein, le guitariste Andres Segovia, les pianistes Vladimir Orloff et SviatoslavRichter et lÕaltiste William Primrose.

Harnoy a re�u une formation de violoniste et a aussi �tudi� lesmath�matiques, la physique et la chimie. Il a enseign� � lÕUniversit� de Torontoavant de devenir chercheur pour Hydro-Ontario, mais la musique est toujoursdemeur�e lÕamour de sa vie. Dans les ann�es 1970 et 1980, il a produit etdirig� un grand nombre dÕenregistrements de sa fille, la violoncellistecanadienne Ofra Harnoy, pour RCA Red Seal. JusquÕici, il a produit pr�s de250 enregistrements sous diff�rentes �tiquettes, entre autres, pour RCA etAnalekta. Maintenant dans la cinquantaine, Harnoy a pris sa retraite, il y a deuxans, pour fonder sa propre entreprise, sp�cialis�e dans la restaurationdÕenregistrements audio.

LÕint�r�t de Harnoy dans ce domaine remonte au milieu des ann�es 1980,lorsquÕil en a eu assez de la pi�tre qualit� des DC disponibles sur le march�,o� lÕon avait transf�r� ses vieux 78 tours et microsillons pr�f�r�s. ÇEn fait, cestransferts produisaient des sons pires que ceux des enregistrements originaux.Ils comportaient trop de bruits de surface, ce qui les rendaient difficiles ��couter. Je savais que je pourrais faire mieuxÈ.

Harnoy a consacr� un an � mettre au point les �l�ments n�cessaires pourla restauration num�rique et � exp�rimenter les logiciels de r�duction de bruittels que CEDAR et Sonic SolutionÕs No-Noise. Durant cette p�riode, encompagnie de son technicien Harry Quan, il a con�u un appareil sp�cial pourconvertir les donn�es analogiques en donn�es num�riques.

La v�ritable restauration dÕun vieil enregistrement exige beaucoup detemps. Harnoy ne r�pugne pas � passer de 200 � 400 heures pourperfectionner un seul DC. Pour lui, la restauration sonore est un travail dÕamour: ÇLa plupart des entreprises fixe un montant limite pour la restauration dechaque disque. Elles ne pourraient pas allouer le temps que je prendsÈ.

Ë DOREMI, le processus habituel de restauration comporte quatre�tapes:

1. La conversion num�rique de la source sonore analogique.2. La r�duction du bruit avec le syst�me CEDAR.3. La r�duction du bruit avec le proc�d� No-Noise (si n�cessaire).4. LÕ�galisation num�rique et le conditionnement binaire.Naturellement, il importe avant tout dÕutiliser de bonnes sources et une

aiguille appropri�e aux 78 tours. Collectionneur avide depuis lÕ�ge de 10 ans,Harnoy a accumul� une �norme quantit� de vieux disques. Il sÕapprovisionneaussi chez une confr�rie de collectionneurs et re�oit lÕaide des chercheurs deDOREMI.

Apr�s la num�risation du mat�riel, Harnoy utilise le syst�me informatiquede r�duction de bruit CEDAR pour �liminer le chuintement, la friture, les petitscliqu�tements et bruits secs. Il v�rifie les r�sultats obtenus en comparant lemat�riel ÇdÕavant et dÕapr�sÈ le traitement afin de sÕassurer que la sonorit�originale est pr�serv�e. La conversion de lÕanalogique au num�rique et lar�duction de bruit CEDAR sont effectu�es en temps r�el, cÕest-�-dire que lesr�sultats sont enregistr�s � mesure que le disque tourne. Le proc�d� No-Noise, dÕautre part, requiert de nombreuses heures de travail informatiqueintense. Ë lÕune des stations de travail Macintosh de DOREMI, Harnoyd�montre le processeur Sonic SolutionÕs No-Noise. Le travail ressemble � laretouche dÕune photographie �gratign�e. Les gros cliqu�tements doivent �tretrait�s individuellement avec la technique dÕinterpolation No-Noise.

Harnoy mÕa fait entendre un disque de d�monstration du mat�riel ÇdÕavantet dÕapr�sÈ le traitement dÕun enregistrement de la Danse num�ro 5 deGranados, par le guitariste Andres Segovia. Les r�sultats �taientspectaculaires et lÕinstrument r�sonnait avec une pr�sence et une clart�

S ound engineer Jacob Harnoy is the director of the DOREMI masteringstudio and record label in suburban Toronto. Presently, Harnoy is one ofthe worldÕs foremost experts on restoring old acoustic recordings - most-

ly lacquer 78s - to pristine condition on CD. His DOREMI digital audio labora-tory specializes in restoring the recorded legacies of great classical musicianssuch as violinists Jascha Heifetz, David Oistrakh and Nathan Milstein, guitaristAndres Segovia, pianists Vladimir Orloff and Sviatoslav Richter and violistWilliam Primrose.

Harnoy was trained as a violinist and also studied mathematics, physicsand chemistry. He taught at the University of Toronto before becoming aresearch scientist with Ontario Hydro, yet music always remained the love of hislife. In the 1970s and 1980s he produced and engineered his daughterCanadian cellist Ofra HarnoyÕs many recordings for RCA Red Seal. To date, hehas produced nearly 250 recordings for RCA and Analekta, among other labels.Harnoy, now in his fifties, retired from Ontario Hydro two years ago to startDOREMI, his own label specializing in audio restoration.

HarnoyÕs interest in audio restoration dates from the mid-1980s, when hegot fed up with the poor quality of commercially available CD transfers of hisfavourite old 78 and LP recordings. ÒThe CD transfers actually sounded worsethan the original recordings. There was too much surface noise, making themdifficult to listen to. I knew that I could do a better job.Ó

Harnoy devoted a year to developing digital restoration components and toexperimenting with noise reduction software such as CEDAR and SonicSolutionÕs No-Noise, during which time he and his technician Harry Quandesigned a custom analog-to-digital converter.

The actual restoration of an old recording is a time-consuming business.Harnoy has no qualms about spending 200-400 hours perfecting a single CD,because for him, sound restoration is a labour of love, ÒMost companies budgeta maximum amount per CD for restoration. They couldnÕt afford the time I take.Ó

The usual audio restoration process at DOREMI follows four steps:1. Conversion from the analog sound source into the digital domain.2. Noise reduction with the CEDAR System 3. Noise reduction with the No-Noise process (when necessary)4. Digital equalization and bit-conditioning.Of course, good sources and the right needle for the 78s are of primary

importance. An avid collector since age 10, Harnoy has amassed a huge col-lection of old records. He also taps a network of fellow collectors for sourcematerial, and is helped by DOREMIÕs own researchers.

Once the material is transferred to digital, Harnoy uses the computerizedCEDAR noise reduction system to reduce hiss, crackle, small clicks and pops.He checks the results with a Òbefore and afterÓ, A/B comparison to ensure all ofthe original sonority is preserved. Analog-to-digital conversion and CEDARnoise reduction are done in real time, i.e., the results are stored as the recordis played. The No-Noise process, on the other hand, requires many hours ofintense computing. At one of DOREMIÕs Macintosh workstations, Harnoydemonstrates the Sonic SolutionsÕ No-Noise processor. The process is akin totouching up a scratchy photograph. Each big click is removed by the No-Noiseinterpolation technique.

Harnoy played me a Òbefore and afterÓ demo CD of GranadosÕ Dance No.5 by guitarist Andres Segovia. The results were spectacular, with the instrumentsounding remarkably close and clear. Harnoy emphasizes that the recordingtechnology back in the 1930s and 1940s, including microphones, was Òmoreadvanced than we tend to think today.Ó Harnoy is often surprised by the rich-ness of the original sound after the surface noise has been removed. ÒThe greatviolinists had a personal, distinctive character and sonority. IÕm trying to bring itback.Ó

When asked where he stood on the issue of keeping the absolute Òauthen-ticityÓ of an interpretation versus ÒimprovingÓ it, he replied firmly, ÒAs I would doto new recordings that I produce, if I can fix a wrong note, I will. ItÕs not the musi-cianÕs fault if their engineer left an error there. My aim is to display the musi-cianÕs artistry at its best.Ó

Standing among piles of old records in his studio, Harnoy reflects, Òthere

Se tenant au milieu dÕune pile de vieux disquesdans son studio, Harnoy r�fl�chit : ÇIl y a l�beaucoup de grands artistes n�glig�s que jevoudrais remettre en valeurÈ. On peut doncsÕattendre � de nombreux tr�sors � venir.

Que lÕon appelle cela du charisme ou du magn�tisme animal, il estind�niable que son physique fait de Hvorostovsky un aristocrate de la nature. Cesl�vres dÕune sensualit� sardonique, cette chevelure argent�e reconnaissable entretoutes, et ces yeux l�g�rement brid�s o� un soup�on de cruaut� tartare se m�le �lÕatavisme slave - cet homme est un paradoxe vivant : � la fois toute chaleur et froidcomme de la glace.

Mais, comme je mÕen suis rendu compte lors de notreentrevue en avril dernier, Hvorostovsky est plus quÕun autrebeau visage. CÕest un artiste serieux, qui sÕefforce dÕatteindre �un �quilibre entre les exigences artistiques et les pressionscommerciales � une �poque Ç tr�s difficile pour la musiqueclassique, une �poque ou m�me dÕexcellents musiciens sontd�laiss�s par les soci�t�s dÕenregistrement È.

Dima, comme lÕappellent ses intimes, est n� en 1962,dans la Çgrande, mais provincialeÈ ville sib�rienne deKrasnoyarsk. Son p�re m�lomane veilla � le faire inscrire dansun coll�ge des arts de la sc�ne. Ë lÕ�poque, il sÕint�ressaitprincipalement � la boxe, au soccer et aux filles. En 1976, ild�butait � lÕOp�ra de Krasnoyarsk, o� il faisait la connaissancede sa future �pouse Svetlana, une ballerine. La directionchorale, lÕenseignement de la musique et les concourslÕoccup�rent pendant plusieurs ann�es. Apr�s quÕil e�tremport� les honneurs du Concours Glinka, la pr�sidente dujury, le l�gendaire mezzo russe Irina Arkhipova, lui sugg�ra detenter sa chance � la Cardiff Singer of the World Competition.Il devait d�crocher le grand prix de lÕ�dition de 1989 de ceconcours, ce qui lan�a sa carri�re internationale. Il faitremarquer que, comme les finales de ce concours sont t�l�vis�es � travers le monde,Çmon apparence physique ne mÕa pas nui.È Imm�diatement apr�s avoir remport�Cardiff, Dima retenait les services dÕun agent et concluait un contrat exclusif de cinqans avec Philips Classics.

Le fait que, � Cardiff, Hvorostovsky lÕa emport� sur le baryton gallois Bryn Terfela donn� lieu � une controverse. Il se souvient : ÇJe ne savais pas qui �tait TerfeljusquÕaux derni�res �liminatoires, lorsque je lÕai entendu chanter Wagner. CÕestseulement � ce moment-l� que jÕai eu des doutes quant � mes chances de gagner leconcours.È Terfel a d�croch� le prix dÕinterpr�tation de Lieder - une distinction queHvorostovsky, dans son anglais un peu approximatif, caracterise comme ÇlÕun de cesprix qui servent � calmer les perdants.È Ce qui nÕa pas emp�ch� Terfel, maintenantreconnu comme lÕun des plus grands chanteurs vivants, de se faire offrir un contrat parDeutsche Grammophon...

La carri�re de Hvorostovsky a pris un envol spectaculaire avec ses d�buts, enr�cital, � Londres (Wigmore Hall, 1989) et � New York (Alice Tully Hall, 1990), et �lÕop�ra, � la Fenice (Eug�ne On�guine, 1991), � Covent Garden (I Puritani, 1992), auCh�telet (Eug�ne On�guine, 1992), � la Scala (Don Carlo, 1992), � Chicago (LaTraviata, 1993) et au Metropolitan Opera (La Dame de Pique, 1995). Entre 1990 et1997, il a particip� � 15 enregistrements, dont 9 de r�citals en soliste, un nombreimportant pour nÕimporte quel chanteur. Plusieurs des enregistrements deHvorostovsky ont �t� port�s par une image publicitaire de Çbeefcake baritoneÈ qui abien failli lui co�ter sa cr�dibilit� artistique. ÇCe nÕ�tait pas mon id�e, mais cettepublicit� �chappait � mon contr�le. JÕ�tais encore si inexp�riment� il y a huit ans, je neconnaissais rien de la gestion artistique. Je me suis donc laiss� emporter.È M�me sÕilse f�licite du fait que son image ait contribu� � le faire connaitre, il est quelque peug�n� de se faire rappeler lÕarticle du magazine Elle paru en 1996 qui le sacrait Ç lÕElvisde lÕop�ra È.

Malgr� tout cela, Hvorostovsky nÕest pas un snob. Il pense que des spectacles dutype Çles Trois t�norsÈ contribuent � diffuser la musique classique dans le grand publicet il a lui-m�me donn� un concert bien r�mun�r� dans un stade, en Islande.N�anmoins, � 36 ans, la priorit� de Dima est de se faire reconna�tre comme un artiste


EveryoneÕs first question about Russian baritone DmitriHvorostovsky: ÒIs he as handsome in person?Ó Yes, the Siberiantiger lives up to his billing as the worldÕs sexiest baritone. When

he walked into the caf� of New YorkÕs elegant Stanhope Hotel wearingdark glasses and a black leather jacket, he radiated movie star glam-our. Call it charisma or animal magnetism, Hvorostovsky is one ofnatureÕs physical aristocrats. Those sardonically sensual lips, thattrademark mane of silver hair and those hooded Slavic eyes suggest-ing cruel Tartar ancestry - the man is totally hot and, paradoxically, cold.

But, as I found out during an interview last February, Hvorostovskyis more than justanother Òbari-hunk.Ó He is aserious artiststruggling to bal-ance artistic andcommercial pres-sures at Òa verydifficult time forclassical music,Óhe said Òwheneven excellentmusicians arebeing dropped byrecord compa-nies.Ó

Dima, as hisfriends call him,was born in 1962in the Òlarge butp r o v i n c i a l ÓSiberian city of

Krasnoyarsk. His music-loving father sent him to a school for talentedchildren and a performing arts high school. His principal interests wereboxing, soccer and girls. In 1986 he joined the Krasnoyarsk Opera andmet his future wife Svetlana, a ballet dancer. Choir direction, teachingmusic and competitions filled the years. Legendary Russian mezzo IrinaArkhipova, who presided over the jury of the Glinka CompetitionHovorsotovsky won, encouraged him to enter the 1989 Cardiff Singer ofthe World Competition that launched his western career. Because theCardiff Competition is internationally televised, being photogenic wasan asset. Dima found an agent and signed an exclusive five-year con-tract with Philips Classics immediately after his Cardiff victory.

HvorostovskyÕs Cardiff win over Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel wascontroversial. As he recalls, ÒI didnÕt know who Terfel was until the lastround of eliminations, when I heard him sing Wagner. Only then did Ihave my doubts about winning.Ó Terfel won the Lieder Prize - Òone ofseveral prizes to calm down the losers,Ó as Hvorostovsky quaintly put it.Terfel, now universally recognized as one of the worldÕs greatest livingsingers, was signed up by Deutsche Grammophon.

HvorostovskyÕs career exploded, with recital debuts in London(Wigmore Hall, 1989), New York (Alice Tully Hall, 1990), and operadebuts at La Fenice (Onegin, 1991), Covent Garden (I Puritani, 1992),Ch�telet (Onegin, 1992), La Scala (Don Carlo, 1992), Chicago (LaTraviata, 1993), Metropolitan Opera (Queen of Spades, 1995). Between1990 and 1997 he participated in 15 recordings, including 9 soloalbums, a large number for any singer.

Much of HvorostovskyÕs recording career was driven by ÒbeefcakebaritoneÓ publicity that very nearly cost him his artistic credibility. ÒIt was-nÕt my idea, but I couldnÕt control it,Ó he reflected. ÒI was immature andI had no idea about career management. I just got carried along.Ó He isgrateful the sex symbol publicity helped establish his fame, but he nowshudders with embarrassment at the mention of Elle magazineÕs 1996

Sadiscographie comprend des enregistrements denombreux airs dÕop�ra, de musique chorale et dechansons folkloriques russes. Curieusement, cenÕest pas lui qui a eu lÕid�e de lÕalbum de folkloreDark Eyes dont la diffusion, en 1991, a �t�couronn�e de succ�s. ÒElvis of OperaÓ feature. Not that Hvorostovsky is asnob. He thinks Three Tenor-type events attractaudiences to classical music, and he has done awell-paying stadium concert himself, in Iceland. Butat 36, DimaÕs priority is to establish himself as aserious artist. He emphasizes that he is a marriedman with a loving wife and twins named Daniel andAlexandra. He works hard learning song cycles byMussorgsky, Mahler, Glinka and Shostakovich. And,so far at least, he has resisted the financial lure ofcrossover projects.

Though billed by Philips Classics as ÒTheElectrifying Fresh Voice of a New RussiaÓ,Hvorostovsky has lived in London, England since1994. He sang twice with the Kirov Opera back in1988 and 1991, when they could afford him, and heremains an admirer of Valery GergievÕs Òthrillingconducting.Ó Though HvorostovskyÕs parents stilllive in Krasnoyarsk, he returns to Russia only threeor four times annually. He has many Russian fans,but also detractors who accuse him of abandoningRussia for big bucks in the west. He is saddened bythe current Russian music scene Òstate subsidiesdried up after Perestroika, so there is much lessactivityÓ but he is excited about his first Russian tourthis summer through Belorussia, the Balticrepublics and the Ukraine.

In terms of repertoire, Hvorostovsky neverabandoned his Slavic roots. The Russian repertoireremains closest to his heart, and it perfectly suits his

rich dark voice. His discography includes Russianopera arias, choral music and folk songs.Surprisingly, his successful 1991 folk song albumDark Eyes wasnÕt even his idea. As a teenager whoplayed in a rock band and idolized Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple and Queen, these old-fashionedsongs his grandmother sang were of little interest tohim. Philips Classics pushed the project and theresult is one of HvorostovskyÕs most satisfyingrecordings. These days Dima is enthusiastic aboutseveral song cycles by the late Russian composerGy�rgy Sviridov whom he calls ÒShostakovichÕsbest pupil.Ó He recorded SviridovÕs Russia CastAdrift in 1994 and he declares, Òif Philips ClassicswonÕt record the new song cycle Petersburg dedi-cated to me, IÕm sure some other label will !Ó

Violinist Nigel Kennedynow calls himselfKennedy and hasreturned to EMI on hisown terms: he picks therepertoire, he producesthe albums (no homog-enizing post-produc-tion), he refuses the

gimmicky publicity and mindless promotional tours.KreislerÕs unabashedly sentimental and virtuosicviolin showpieces seem a strange choice for thepunkish, anti-establishment Kennedy, but this discis a winner. KennedyÕs playing is refreshingly spon-taneous and honest. Both schmaltz and hair-raisingtechnical demands are taken in stride, with a smile.And why not? This playing transports us back to anera of unmediated reactions and extreme emotions.The recorded sound of the violin and piano works isdaringly unpolished, Òrecorded real live - no cheat-ingÓ, according to KennedyÕs notes. The long takesinclude some gritty and dryish patches, andKennedyÕs heavy breathing, in keeping with his newwarts-and-all esthetic. The result conveys theexcitement of an inspired live performance.KreislerÕs String Quartet suffers a bit from thickerrecorded sound and close miking. There are notrack timings because Kennedy loathes critics whojudge performances by the clock. His publicist con-firms, Òit is unlikely that NK will put track timings onrecords in the future.Ó Likewise there is no indica-tion when this album was recorded since K Òviewsrecording dates as irrelevant to people enjoying themusic.Ó Finally, there is an empty fourteenth track -six minutes of nothing (a new work by John Cage,perhaps?). ÒNo,Ó says KennedyÕs spokeman, it isambient studio sound, Òmusic in respect of silence.ÓI am no judge of silence, but as far as the musicgoes, this album reaffirms that KennedyÕs develop-ment is worth following. -P.A.

The tradition of organists who not only have amasterly command of the instrument, but improviseand compose music for organ includes Sweelinck,Bach, Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven,Mendelssohn, Widor, Vierne, and a whole slew ofBritish and French organists. Judging from the artof Denis B�dard, the tradition is alive and well inQu�bec. B�dard is a member of Les M�lodistesInd�pendants, a group of artists who joined togeth-er in 1995 to help foster accessible contemporarymusic. The compositions included here are a rep-resentative selection of the composerÕs output forthe organ, though I wish he had included his enter-taining variations on the No�l In DulciJubilo.Included is his fine homage to Qu�becÕsClaude Lavoie and to Buxtehude. This disc is a joyto listen to, full of dancing rhythms, wit and humour.The music is a veritable showcase for the Casavantorgan of Qu�bec CityÕs Basilica recently refur-bished by the firm of Guilbault-Th�rien. Is this adisc of masterworks? Perhaps not, but his compo-

Historian Grover Sales called jazz ÒAmericaÕsClassical MusicÓ and today everyone acknowl-edges jazz is serious music. There is no betterplace for classical music lovers to discover jazzthan at the Montreal Jazz Festival (July 1-July 10,1998), named north AmericaÕs best jazz fest by the1997 JazzTimes readersÕ poll. Here are my picks ofthe festivalÕs ÒclassicÓ jazz offerings ....

¥At the top of my list is pianist Cecil Taylor, 69years young and one of the handful of great jazzinnovators still walking the earth. His uncompro-mising avant-garde music - clustered piano playingredolent of the young Henry Cowell and dauntingrhythmic and compositional intensity - isnÕt foreveryone, but fans of twentieth-century repertoireshouldnÕt miss his solo concert on July 10 and histrio on July 11.

¥Classically trained trumpet player WyntonMarsalis, a leading light of the neo-conservativemovement in jazz, brings his Lincoln Centre JazzOrchestra to Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier July 4.

¥The 1998 festival features two other majorcontemporary jazz trumpeters. Tom Harrell,Downbeat readersÕ top jazz trumpeter this year,plays the intimate Salle Ges� (a perfect setting forjazz), July 10. David Douglas is a prime trumpetinnovator of his generation. He emerged in NewYorkÕs radical downtown scene but is supremelycompetent and comfortable in music ranging fromneo-bop to the avant-garde to his own classicalcompositions. He leads a quartet at the Salle Ges�on July 5.

¥ Guitar maestro John Scofield leads 7 con-certs in the Th��tre du Nouveau Monde. Take spe-cial note of the July 9 concert with tenor saxophon-ist Joe Lovano, and the July 2 duo with a deli-ciously subtle guitarist, Jim Hall.

¥The New Latin American Jazz is the mostinnovative and exciting jazz development of the1990s. Puerto Rican saxophonist David Sanchezplays in a trio, quintet and orchestra July 1. CatchJoe Lovano in a duo with Cuban piano dynamoGonzalo Rubalcaba on July 9.

¥Other sax standouts: the mature mastery andmusicality of the saxophonistsÕ saxophonist JoeHenderson, on July 3. DonÕt miss the pyrotechnicvirtuosity of young lion James Carter, who will blowthe roof off the Spectrum on July 9. Montr�alÕsworld class reed player Jean Derome will play intwo different trios on July 2 & 3 .

¥ French accordionist Richard Galliano bringsfive concerts of European jazz to Salle Ges�, July2-6.

What a triumph! This ÔbookÕ on the secret worldof the organ combines two CDs with illustratedinformation on organ construction,registration, com-positional forms, and a dictionary of organ stops.The CDs are well thought out, and are imaginative-ly integrated with the bookÕs text. The first discoffers 28 examples of different organ stops, givenfirst on their own and then played with other stopsin improvisations by Michel Colin at the organ ofNotre-Dame des Victoires in France. We are givena tour of all the regular organ sounds and the moreexotic Carillon, Quintadena, Harmonic flute (theDebussy of organ stops), the brazen Chamadereeds and the dark sound of the pedal Contrebasse.The second CD is an anthology of organ musictaken from the harmonia mundi catalogue, coveringthe most important styles and composers of musicfor the organ. We are treated to such international-ly known organists as Lionel Rogg, Ren� Soargin,Michel Chapuis, and Francis Chapelet playing on awide variety of great continental instruments. Theseperformances are all very good with fine qualityrecorded sound. Of particular interest is CouperinÕsDialogue with its fiery reed stops and theRenaissance Ôbig bandÕ sound of SweelinkÕs Est-ceMars?. Bach is also well in evidence, with hisFantasia in G minor breathtakingly performed byLionel Rogg. About the only drawback to this

release is the French-only text, though the averagemusic lover will still benefit from this beautiful Ôcon-ceptÕ recording. A must for any Ôamateur dÕorgue.Õ

Les op�ras de veine comique dÕAlbert Lortzing(1801-1851), extr�mement populaires dans sonAllemagne natale, sont fort peu jou�s � lÕ�tranger.Laraison en est que lÕhumour allemand estg�n�ralement m�connu, au point o� certains irontm�me jusquÕ� nier son existence ou, pis encore, �le taxer de mauvais go�t. En r�alit�, le comiqueallemand existe bel et bien, mais cÕest un humouressentiellement parodique et caricatural,relativement peu port� sur les complicationsdramatiques et qui, surtout, lorsquÕil est centr� surle langage, tourne moins sur les mots eux-m�mesque sur le ton du discours. Ë lÕop�ra,particuli�rement sensible � ce dernier aspect, onsongera avant tout aux Meistersinger de Wagner ouaux com�dies de Richard Strauss. Mais ceux-ci onteu des pr�d�cesseurs, dont Lortzing (auteur dÕunHans Sachs!) est certainement lÕun des plusimportants.
