At this time of year, we focus on music for Advent; the start of the church year. There are three themes running through the season of Advent; from the Old Testament prophecies which look forward to the Messiah, to the waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus and through to the promise of his return at the second coming.

The season is rich with symbolism and is characterised not only by a feeling of expectation and hope but also by a certain sense of solemnity and reverence. Music for Advent is consequently varied in both style and focus, picking up on the various tenets of Advent and giving us a wide array of material from which to choose. The music in this Carols Service ranges from the 15th century (Praetorius) to the contemporary Rutter work “Jesus Child”, along with a modern adaptation by Peter Warlock of another 15th century tune, complete with Old English words (Tyrley, Tyrlow). As well, the traditional carols are sung by congregation and choir (with some using the splendid David Willcocks arrangements and descants).

We are delighted to have playing organ this evening, Andrej Kouznetsov, who has returned from the UK having been most recently Organ Scholar at Westminster Abbey.

I hope you enjoy the Festival of Lessons and Carols and wish you and your family much joy at Christmas!

The Order of Service

1. Once in royal David’s cityStood a lowly cattle shed,Where a mother laid her babyIn a manger for his bed:Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little Child.

2. He came down to earth from heavenWho is God and Lord of all,And his shelter was a stable,And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly,Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

3. And through all his wondrous childhoodHe would honour and obey,Love, and watch the lowly maiden,In whose gentle arms he lay;Christian children all must beMild, obedient, good as he.

4. For he is our childhood’s pattern,Day by day like us he grew,He was little, weak and helpless,Tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feeleth for our sadness,And he shareth in out gladness.

5. And our eyes at last shall see him,Through his own redeeming love,For that child so dear and gentleIs our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children onTo the place where he is gone.

6. Not in that poor lowly stable,With the oxen standing by,We shall see him;But in heaven,Set at God’s right hand on high; When like stars his children crownedAll in white shall wait around.

The First Nowell English Traditional carolArr: David Willcocks

1. The first Nowell the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,On a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

2. They looked up and saw a star,Shining in the east, beyond them far;And to the earth it gave great light,And so it continued both day and night: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

3. And by the light of that same star,Three wise men came from country far;To seek for a king was their intent,And to follow the star wherever it went: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

4. This star drew nigh to the north-west; O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,And there it did both stop and stayRight over the place where Jesus lay: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

5. Then enter’d in those wise men three,Full rev’rently upon their knee,And offer’d there in his presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankincense: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

6. Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heav’nly Lord,That hath made heav’n and earth of naught,And with his blood mankind hath bought: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

Nella Fantasia, the music of which comes from the film, The Mission, has been set to Italian words, which have the following message:

In my fantasy, I see a world of justiceWhere all people live in peace and honestyI dream of a world where spirits will be always freeThey will be ever free like floating clouds full of humanity within the deepest soul

In my fantasy, I see a world of radianceWhere darkest nights are ever brighter
