The DASH 9 7 Showcase Event! A variety Performance in Cabaret Style featuring artists who received the Disability Arts Initiative Award and with a special appearance from 'Heart n' Soul' Music Theatre Company.

'Wonder Barbara ' Wonder Barbara, a comedienne based in London; will compere the Showcase Event. She challenges and entertains with her dry, persuasive sense of humour, and will introduce the evening's line-up of entertainment, including:

Hear t 'n Soul Music Theatre Company Heart 'n Soul return to Shropshire this year following the resounding success of their first visit for DASH 96. 'The Experience' is an hour long show of dynamic, vibrant and footstomping delight, blending a whole host of musical styles! It is a musical trip celebrating the vital expression of the culture of people with learning disabilities.

Mike Taylor Mike Taylor is a self taught guitar player and pianist. He writes, sings and records his own music and we look forward to the imminent release of his first CD.

Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company Since their appearance in DASH 96, Blue Eyed Soul have continued to grow in strength and reputation as the region's most celebrated integrated community dance company. The

company has been working with some of Britain's leading choreographers to create a diverse and unique programme of dance.

ACE D r a m a Group ACE Drama, an integrated group from Oswestry; has been developing their skills through the input of professional artists, and return to DASH 97 to perform a specially commissioned piece of work for the Festival Showcase.

D.E.A.F. Sign Theatre DEAF Sign Theatre has been formed by members of the Deaf Equal Access Forum in Shropshire. DASH 97 sees the launch of their expressive and innovative form of theatre, and exposes the heightened degree of communication that can be represented through sign language.

Shrewsbury College Dance Group A local dance group of people with learning difficulties brings their exciting, personal and challenging work to the Showcase Event.

'An Er ror Of Judgement' with Strathcona Theatre Company An Error Of Judgement questions how disabled people can challenge society's obsession with power -personal, political and sexual. It is presented through a fusion of narrative, dance, mime and a specially commissioned musical score. The performance will unweave a web of crime, deceit and destruction in this controversial modern thriller. Strathcona Theatre Company is a National Touring Company, employing a group of 8 learning disabled professional actors who devise original, incisive and inspirational physical theatre pieces.

A Feast Of Song And Dance A Ballroom Tea Dance Concert, with Live Music from: Peter Sturdy. Described as the Disability Art Movement's answer to Frank Sinatra, Peter is an 'old style' Crooner who's rich velvety voice re-creates old and newer Classics alike. "It was a performance worthy of 'Old Blue Eyes' himself." Jamie Beddard (Take Note! 2)

Broseley Folk N i g h t Treat yourself to an evening of folk song, music, merriment and good company, with: Julie McNamara. With "The voice of an angel stirring the heart to song", Julie McNamara takes her audience on a journey of extr&mes in emotion, through a powerful mix of beautiful classic Irish ballads, hard-hitting political commentary and sharp wit.

Ian Stanton. Once described as the "Bob Dylan of the Disability Arts Movement", Ian delivers a mixture of music, song and mischievous humour, to poke fun at the prejudice that disabled people face.

Johnny Crescendo. Returning to DASH 97 by popular demand, Johnny Crescendo is a powerful singer/song writer and performance poet, who focuses on the positive identities of disability through his music and anecdotes.

The DASH 9 7 Festival Finale Performance A Grand Finale Night celebrating the finest in Music, Theatre and Dance!

Caroline Parker. Caroline is a 'Signed Song' artist, who's unique form of performance has been created through her own experience of having a hearing impairment. She transforms the everyday patterns and textures of sign language into a colourful tapestry of movement and meaning. Last year


she 'wowed' audiences with her stunning interpretations of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. This year . . . 'Spice Girls' watch out! Caroline will also compere the Finale night which includes:

Eye Contact Dance Company. Eye Contact is a celebrated Dance Company which includes dancers with visual impairments and sighted dancers. They are re-working their most acclaimed performance to date, 'Sub-Vision' specifically for the Finale evening of the Festival. Sub Vision is a journey through colour in the mind's eye of a blind person. With Sub Vision the company use live music, poetry and stories, large projected images, smell, sound, touch and taste; to communicate their journey through colour.

Mat Fraser. "Who says Disability Music can't be mainstream?" Described as the 'Thalidomide Ninja', Mat Fraser hits an audience with his unique disability rap and poetry, 'quickly converting an empty stage into his own rich domain'.

Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company. For their second major appearance in DASH 97 Blue Eyed Soul's performances will include the World Premiere of the work created with Kate Gower of Ricochet Dance Company, plus a re-working of Louise Katerega's Dis Comfort Zone and the 'all women' piece Me Mam, me Gran, and me Aunty Edith.

DASH '9/! Celebrate the difference

A Day To Remember! with 'Shropshire Reminiscence'. An open day operating on a 'drop-in' basis which will focus on the changing images of disability over the years. Displays, speakers, information, photographs, crafts... Active participation and involvement is encouraged through reminiscence techniques including story, art, crafts, music, poetry and conversation. How circumstances and disability have affected lives. How attitudes have changed over the years. How society's image and reaction to disability has changed. What experiences and messages do you have that could be shared through reminiscence?

'Co-Pilots' with Shropshire Youth Service and Local Artists. A weekend of Youth Art and Media workshops including Drama/Dance, Music Making, Video and Art/Craft. This will include a sharing of work at the end of Sunday's session. Book in advance. Bring a packed lunch. Light refreshments available.

'Living Gallery' - Residency with 'Trading Faces' Mask Theatre. A week's residency with the Nationally acclaimed Mime Theatre Company, Trading Faces. A group of school students invited from across Shropshire with and without visual impairment, will be working on a 'Living Gallery' Project [including mime, mask making, visual art and physical theatre), and performing to an invited audience at the end of the week.

Dance Workshop with Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company. (for info, about the company look under 'performances'} Wear loose comfortable clothing and bare feet or light weight shoes. Open to people with or without physical disability. No experience necessary!


Art Training Day (For Artists with disabilities) with Euryl Stevens. A day to meet other artists, explore new techniques and develop skills. Finished work will be exhibited at 5, Belmont for the remainder of the Festival. Euryl Stevens currently lectures at Shrewsbury College Of Arts And Technology. Her personal style is full and expressive. She produces a wide variety of work from small sized poster paintings to oils and large paper collages using a mixture of different paper and acrylic paint. The work is bright, bold and full of energy!

Theatre Workshop with Strathcona Theatre Company. (for info, about the company look under 'performances'] No experience necessary. Open to people with and without learning disability. (open only to people who have attended the Performance on the previous evening.)

Signed Song Workshop with Caroline Parker. (for info, about Caroline, look under 'performances') An exploration of the techniques used to translate and portray songs through sign. Learn how to perform song visually and to 'listen' to music! Some experience of signing would be helpful.



Lome Street Day Centre, Lome Street, Oswestry

Mosaics' with the Lome Street Project Group and Janette Hardy-Pierce. A day exploring contrasting skills and techniques in the more unusual art forms of mosaic and encaustic art [wax painting). Lome Street has received The Disability Arts Initiative Award for the production of a mosaic at the centre. This is a chance to see the work in progress and to have a go at doing it yourself!

Janette has developed her own style of encaustic art by producing paintings in strong radiant colour through the application of hot wax with an iron. This technique will be explored during the afternoon session. (You will need a plastic biscuit box or something similar for a mould, rubber gloves and a bag of small flat pebbles. Also, a plastic tray (like a cat litter tray} and a travelling iron, if you have them -don't worry if you don't!)

Percussion Rhythm Workshop with Mat Fraser. (for info, about Mat Fraser, look under 'performances') Mat's unique approach to percussion has come about from the shape of his hands. The workshop will explore ways of holding, creating sound, and working in rhythm, with various percussive instruments in new and exciting ways. No experience necessary.

Contact Dance Workshop with Eye Contact Dance Company. (for info, about Eye Contact, look under 'performances') An opportunity to experience a unique multi-sensory approach to dance and movement. The workshop format has been developed over 7 years of exploration by visually impaired and sighted people working together. Open to anyone and especially those with visual impairment. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bare feet.

'Out Of The Shadows' An exhibition, rich in diversity and approach, demonstrating the high quality of work being achieved by disabled artists in Shropshire. 'Out Of The Shadows' is the largest collection of its kind to be put together locally and profiles work from winners of The Disability Arts Initiative for 1 9 9 6 / 9 7 . Work ranges from detailed pencil drawings, to large oils, stained glass, textiles and mixed media. Exhibiting alongside past and present award winners will be two other local disabled artists, Julie Hill and If or Jones; and entrants to this year's Festival Visual Arts project which took the DASH theme 'Celebrate The Difference' as its stimulus. This will be accompanied by Festival information, work in progress and a display showing the preparation work 'towards DASH 97..' This year's award winning artists are: Hilda Simpson, Veronica Thomas, Garry Hill, Michael Gerson, Ann Ewin, Maureen Palmer, Denise Wall and Betty Evans.

'Artworks' Created, organised, produced, framed, hung and exhibited by members of Stirchley Day Centre, 'Artworks' is an exhibition with a difference! By housing the exhibition at its own studio base, the audience is able to see both the full range of finished art works and all the working processes that are involved in creating the displays. Artists are always on hand to talk about the exhibition and their individual entries, and can be seen creating more of their own work on site.
