PERFORMERS continued Common Ground Sign Dance Theatre A Celebration of diversity and integration of culture. Performances for deaf and hearing audiences. Common ground is managed and directed by both Deaf and Hearing Artists. Common ground will bo giving the County Premiere of their new work " Answer mo with Silence". Seven people are involved in creating tho work which highlights the difference between sound and silence. The way we communicate, our attitude and how we see things. The set has been devised to allow a film to be shown as part of the performance. What Common Ground has created, is a truly live multi-media event which is accessible to both Deaf and Hearing people alike. PROGRAMME Celebrate the DiFFerence! Welcome to DASH '96, the First Shropshire Festival oF Disability Art. Disability Art? For me quite simply any creative work that is inFormed by an artist's direct experience oF disability. In DASH 96 we aim to give a high profile to the work oF local artists and blend this with the best oF National and International talent. Creating influences and relationships, new work and new experiences that will inForm and exist Far beyond the Fortnight oF the Festival.

This year's main theme has been Dance and the work oF local company Blue Eyed Soul (Friday) and Saturday night's guests, Common Ground Sign Dance Theatre leave Few doubts that disabled artists are at the ForeFront in creating challenging and exhilarating new work that is pushing back the boundaries in movement and dance.

Combine this with the all round high quality oF perFormers and artists at the Festival and the pure in yer Face good time entertainment oF companies such as Heart 'n' Soul (Sunday) and it becomes evident that Disability Arts and Disabled Artists are here to stay.

EXHIBITIONS... "WORKE CHANGING IMAGES is the largest collection of work by disabled artists ever put together in Shropshire. The innovative and high quality work on display ranges from hand decorated interior design, tapestry and tiles to sculpture, photography and painting. The artists are: Barbara Bailey, Roger Blackham. Everglades Self Help Group, Lome St. Project, Caroline Marie Rushton, Hilda Simpson, Gibby Smith, Seren Thomas, Joy Tudor, Vision Home Assoc. and Brigid Wright.

A WALK ON THE WILD MOOR an exhibition of photographs taken and produced by Monkmoor Lodge Tuesday Activity Group recording a weekend in the country. Ewan a member of the group explains "the photographs were chosen because of their artistic appeal and because they included our friends and the landscape ol the urea. On reflection they reminded us of a whole range of omotions, including images ol loneliness nndhlenkness on ,i wel and cold Saturday afternoon."

Disab ility Arts Initiative All the local artists and performers appearing at the Festival received financial support through the DAI organised by Shropshire Disability Consortium. A new round of small grants for disabled artists will be available from October.

Integrated Drama Week OUT OF THE BLUE We've got the time 10.00-4.00 Mon. 1st July to Fri. 5th July We've got the space 5 Belmont Shrewsbury (thanks to SHYAN for the donation) We've got an experienced and innovative director/ actor/musician JEM DOBBS (credits include Prospero, Gatsby, Rev John Hale in the Crucible, TV and Film + loads of experience devising and directing work in an integrated setting) All we need now is YOU! WANTED 12-15 young(ish) (18-35ish) people both disabled and non-disabled to work with Jem in devising and cronting a brand new piece of theatre for DASH 96. You'll meet together Monday morning work for the week and perform the piece on Friday afternoon. Cost? £25.00. The aims of the workshop will be to pass on practical video skills in programme planning and production both drama and documentary, to look at representation of disabled people in the media and to consider the types of video projects and productions that could be developed in Shropshire. Disabled theatre maker/performer GARRY ROBSON The Man Who Peter Brook once asked if he could join one of his workshops (True) Will be looking at devised drama techniques with particular reference to the relationships between disabled people and their "appliances". The workshop is part of an Arts Council Project run by Garry and visual artist Felicity Shillingford, to develop a performance piece about appliances. The workshop will be photographed Free

ACE DRAMA GROUP JEM DOBBS Oswestry based Ace Group work to improve communication between people of different abilities and as a medium for self-expression. Recently they have been working with dancer Ray Jacobs to create a new movement and music performance for DASH 96. Its twin themes of Shelter and Freedom will have something to say to everyone.

THE DIFFERENCE A Pilot Video Magazine for people with learning difficulties

During 1995, a group of nine people with learning difficulties from Oswestry, Shropshire worked with The Rural Media Company to produce a video. The video is called The Difference and it is made in the style of a TV Magazine programme. It is very funny but it also has a serious side in which it says that people with learning difficulties deserve a better deal within many areas of today's society.

See it at DASH 96. It's being given its County Premiere 5.30pm Saturday 6 July at the Film Theatre in The Music Hall.

Jem is a freelance actor /director / musician currently based in Leeds. His most recent credits include Rev. John Hale in The Crucible, Gatsby in an adaptation of The Great Gatsby by Revolver Theatre and Prospero in The Tempest. He has various film and TV credits including Body & Soul for Carlton and loads of experience in directing and devising work in an integrated setting. He lectures in Drama at Thomas Danby in Leeds and is Trumpet and Vocalist in World Music Big Band "Bassa Bassa".

Jem will be directing the Integrated Drama Project -Out of the Blue at 5, Belmont, Monday 1st. July -Friday 5th. July 10.00-4.00pm

AQUAMIRA SOUND & MOVEMENT Shrewsbury based project Aquamira have been working on a new performance piece using movement, music and sound beams. This unique sensory feast will be shown in its video format during the Dance Showcase

JtuXlJ? UJCrlJWllliXlC) Garry Robson Garry is a disabled theatre maker/actor/musician. After many years on the Celtic Music circuit with Patti 0' Doors and Kelly's Heroes, he sought legitimate employment in Theatre. Theatre work includes actor/director on New Breed's Grimm, and director on Tryst, a definitive Death in Sleeping Giants Steve and latterly an eight month tour with Sea Changes, Interplay's acclaimed multi-sensory adaptation of The Tempest. He regularly tours his own small Children's Theatre Co. Kelly's Kidstuff and can be found singing in small dark bars with his duo, The Big Brothers. Currently, with Arts Council support he is devising a new theatre piece "Fittings" and is directing an absolutely wonderful Festival of Disability Art in Shropshire.

Johnny Crescendo Johnny Crescendo is a powerful singer songwriter and performance poet. Let him tell you about himself and his work from the sleeve notes from his album PRIDE: This album is about PRIDE. It is about being comfortable in who you are as a disabled person, it is about having the self respect and the self confidence to challenge the system that screws me and you, it's about disabled people as lovers, as parents, as sexual beings. There's a war goin' on for our right to be included in the human race, Stay Strong, Stay Proud, Stay Angry GET INVOLVED!

Mike Taylor Mike Taylor was born in London in 1957. As a teenager he taught himself the Piano and Guitar. He then became a chorister at Lichfield and Peterborough. Whilst in America coaching Gymnastics he had a motorcycle accident and in 1980 returned to England for rehabilitation. He returned to America in 1992, where he had his first recording Session. He now coaches Gymnastics at Lilleshall National Sports Centre and Wrekin College. He writes and records music in his spare time at home.

Punjab Dancers

In June and July this year ten young People from the Punjab in India are visiting Shropshire as part of the Shropshire -Punjab cultural Exchange Programme organised by Shropshire Arts Education. Whilst here the young people will be working with members of the Shropshire Youth Dance and both Punjabi and British dancers in order to develop a fusion of dance styles for performance. This exciting and innovative work will be further developed when the Shropshire students visit the Punjab later this year. The performance in Bishop's Castle will include traditional and classical Indian dance plus contemporary western dance styles.

BLUE EYED SOUL was formed in 1994, following a residency with CandoCo Dance Company. It currently has 14 members, with equal numbers of disabled and non-disabled participants. The company meets on a regular basis to devise, rehearse and perform dance.

Now entering its third year of work, the company has gone from strength to strength. The past six months have seen the company taking part in workshops and performances throughout England and Wales. The work is made collectively, with guidance of professional artists, in an environment that enhances our own individual strengths. Blue Eyed Soul work to create dance that is both challenging and sensitive.

CAROLINE PARKER Trained at mime school, then worked as an actor in various theatre companies touring nationally and internationally. Started signing songs as a party trick at parties, then got booked at a cabaret. The rest as you say is history, this led on to signing songs on BBC's On The Edge. Since then, in between acting jobs, Caroline has signed songs and compered cabarets all over the place. Most recent work includes playing the role of Hecuba in Solent Peoples Theatre production of Trojan Women and presenting the BBC's Moving to English.
