Vocabulary Words

• Chao ong (Dzhow ong) Vietnamese for good day

• Ni hao (Nee HaOW ) Chinese for hello

Objectives

• Students will learn about other cultures and be exposed to diversity.

• Students will be able to locate countries on a world map.• Students will understand the world is made up of regions

that are very different from each other in terms of climate, geography, animal life, and culture.

• Students will gain knowledge of the different geographic locations.

• Students will gain an understanding of foods eaten during different festivals.

Mexico

• During the festival held to honor an important Mexican battle, people eat tortillas, beans, and tacos.

• This festival is held in May.• People dance and sing to celebrate.

France

• During the lemon festival, people eat lemon cakes and lemon pudding.

• The festival is held in February and lasts for two weeks.

• People watch parades where floats are made from lemons.

China

• During the celebration of the Moon Festival, people make tasty moon cakes filled with red beans

• This festival is held in the fall during the full moon.

Antigua

• During the carnival festival, people eat spicy fried chicken, stewed beef, and fried vegetables called fritters.

• The carnival festival is held in late July.

Vietnam

• During the festival of the new year, people eat rice cakes wrapped in leaves.

• The festival of the new year is held in January and February.

• People watch parades that have dancing dragons.

United States

• During the festival of Mardi Gras, the people eat king cake which is a cake that has sugar icing and a doll baked inside.

• Whoever gets the doll bakes the king cake the following year.

• People watch parades.

ActivitiesDay 1

• Introduce the students to the book Festival Foods Around the World by Becky Stull. The teacher will read this to the class and will discuss the different cultures.

• The class (as a whole) will locate each country on a large map and thumbtack their locations on it.

• The students will sample moon cakes that come from China.

Activity Day 2

• The students will sample lemon cakes and lemon pudding from France.

•The students will be given a blank world map and they will complete it by labeling the countries we

are studying.

ActivitiesDay 3

• The students will sample moon cakes filled with red beans from China.

• The students will work in small groups to create a travel brochure for China.

Activities Day 4

• The students will sample spicy fried chicken and fried vegetables called fritters from Antigua.

• The students will learn the proper word for hello from the native language of each country we are covering.

• The students will sample rice cakes wrapped in leaves from Vietnam.

• The students will write a journal entry on an interesting fact about the country they would like to visit.

Activity Day 6

• The students will sample a king cake from the United States that is used to celebrate Mardi Gras.

• The students will create their own book about the countries we have studied this past week.
