82 FESPA WORLD 12/04

AND FINALLY…

Over the years, I’ve attended more

exhibitions than I care to remember,

both as a visitor and an exhibitor,

which is why, in theory, I should be

ideally placed to provide lots of

useful hints and tips that will

ensure you get the best out of your

Munich experience. However,

although it pains me to admit it, I

am the last person that anyone

should take advice from. Prior to

any show, I usually find myself

working right up until the moment

that I leave for the airport, in order

to make up for the days that I’ll be

missing. My pre-show plan therefore

consists of nothing more organised

than flinging assorted items into a

suitcase and hoping for the best.

However, having compiled masses of

information on FESPA 2005 during

the last several months, I feel the

time has finally come for me to be a

little bit more grown-up about this.

So I’m providing the following as

much as an aide memoire for myself,

as a set of suggestions for you.

1. Book your accommodation

and do this now. And as I have

learnt through bitter experience,

it is usually best to do this

yourself. Three years ago, I

foolishly entrusted my hotel

reservation to a colleague who

managed to book rooms for the

following month. As a result, I

had to endure five dreadful days

of moving between a succession

of different hotels, with all of

the packing and unpacking and

subsequent loss of belongings

that that entailed!

2. Spend some time before the

show deciding who and what

you most want to see. If you feel

that you will need to discuss your

requirements with an exhibiting

company, it’s a good idea to see

whether you can make a firm

appointment. Otherwise all that

will happen is that you will

spend the entire show missing

the only person on the stand

who can provide the information

that you need. Most exhibitors

will be only too happy to

schedule a time.

3. The same goes for friends

and contacts that you are hoping

to catch up with at the show –

with an exhibition the size of

FESPA 2005, which is spread over

four halls, the chances of just

bumping into someone are greatly

reduced. Make a definite date!

4. Using the information

provided in this magazine and

our more extensive online

catalogue, make a list of all of

your ‘must sees’ and arrange

them in order of priority. And, to

keep the legwork to a minimum,

try to organise it so that you visit

exhibitors in a logical sequence.

For example, If your list includes

lots of companies exhibiting in

different halls, try to visit all of

the companies within a single

hall on the same day. One of the

reasons exhibitions are so

exhausting is that we can spend

our time literally walking miles

– save your energy for the

important things!

5. Make a note of any seminars

that you want to see. If your

watch or mobile phone has an

alarm, set it to go off at least 15

minutes before the seminar is

due to start. It’s easy to get so

caught up in a conversation or

engrossed in a demonstration

that you lose all track of time

and consequently miss the very

seminar that you most wanted

to attend.

6. Write your final list in a

notebook that you can easily

carry with you and, if possible,

also carry a mini stapler. Allocate

a couple of pages to each

exhibitor and be sure to include

the stand number and also

names and contact numbers for

the people you are hoping to see.

You then have sufficient space to

jot down any notes you need to

make and can also staple

business cards to the appropriate

pages. This saves you ending up

with a great wodge of cards at

the end of the show that mean

less than nothing to you!

7. When you first arrive at the

show, do what the professionals

do – walk the floor. This will give

you the opportunity to see

companies and products that are

new to you. If you see anything

worthy of further investigation,

make a note of the exhibitor’s

name and stand number in your

notebook so that you can revisit

them later in the week. This will

save you the anguish of wandering

vaguely around trying to find

them again three days later!

8. Plan your downtime! I can’t

tell you how many evenings I’ve

trailed around an unfamiliar city,

searching in vain for somewhere

nice to eat, only to later find that

I had been a street or two away

from all of the best restaurants!

As briefly outlined on pages

30/32, Munich is a lively city

with much to offer in terms of

culture, culinary experiences

and shopping.

Visit www.munich-tourist.de

for maps and information.

9. Wear comfortable shoes!

As someone who is absolutely

devoted to her stilettos, this is

advice that I have no intention

of taking, but most sensible

people will want to give some

careful thought to their footwear.

I generally take a different pair of

shoes for everyday – yes, they are

all equally uncomfortable, but at

least they all rub in

different places, which usually

ensures that I can hobble my way

through to the end of a show!

10. Don’t’ forget to visit the

Fespa stand (B1 440) where the

team will be happy to provide

any further assistance and infor-

mation that you need. And

between now and then, remem-

ber that you can probably find

the answer to any

exhibition-related question you

want to ask, simply by visiting

According to DEMAK S.R.L, a

manufacturer of doming

machines, labels can really

benefit from the addition of

polyurethane (PU) doming.

Advantages include three-

dimensional thickness, effective

lens protection from

environmental agents and

excellent long-term durability.

Just as importantly, the PU dome

also adds eye appeal.

Scott Fresener of the U.S. Screen

Printing Institute in Tempe,

Arizona USA has introduced the

next breakthrough in inkjet

technology, the Fast T-JET inkjet

textile printer, which he claims,

is set to revolutionise garment

printing. The Fast T-JET produces

vibrant, washfast prints on white

and light garments very quickly

indeed - a full size 12"x14" print can

be produced in under two minutes!

A small table-top unit measuring

25" W x 45" L by 17" H, Fast T-JET

uses seven colour inkjet technology

and comes complete with a bulk

continuous flow ink system and

seven 4oz. Starter bottles of

FastINK TEXTILE. Wth an ink

cost of $.40 per print (standard

size print) and much less on items

like baseball caps, boxer shorts,

mouse pads, panties, bibs, bandanas

and towels, it’s easy to see what

an economical machine this is.

Fast T-JET JUMBO is a full size

floor-standing unit that uses the

same technology as the Fast T-JET

and measures 55" W x 85" L by

47" H. Using a special baseball

cap holder it is possible to print

four caps at a time. It also prints

large bath towels. See both of the

HALL B1 – THE GENERAL HALL

In addition to its traditional

screenprinting machines, Afford

Industrial, S.A. will be

displaying its new range of UV

and solvent based inks for screen

and digital printing, which can

be used with most of the existing

printheads on the market.

Included are new UV inks for

PVC, which are crack resistant, as

well as UV inks suitable for use

on PP, PS, PET, PMMA, glass, and

metal. These will be further

complemented with a range of

UV thermomouldable inks.

Afford will also be presenting

new developments for the textile

sector together with a new range

of emulsions and ancillary

chemicals. However the

undisputed highlight of Stand

B1 640 will be a new digital

inkjet flat bed printer which is

capable of printing at speeds in

excess of 260 sqm per hour.

On Stand B1 205, Autotype

International will be

demonstrating a number of

technological innovations. The

company’s controlled profile

stencil technology has already

significantly benefited the optical

disc industry and the launch of

Capillex CX at the show, will

enable screenprinters to enjoy the

same advantages. This latest

addition to the Autotype range

will mean that only two products

are required to cover a mesh range

from 62 to 182 threads per cm.

Another new launch at FESPA

2005 will be Autotex AM with

Microban,a unique polyester film

with anti-microbial properties,

which is ideally suited for touch

applications in hygiene sensitive

areas such as hospitals,

supermarkets and schools. The

anti-microbial agent is

incorporated into the film itself,

thus providing protection against

pathogens such as MRSA

throughout the lifespan of the

finished product.

Bayer MaterialScience AG will

be presenting its extensive range

of polycarbonate films, which are

marketed under the Makrofol and

Bayfol brand names. Bayer will be

using Stand B1 712 to highlight

the many screenprinting

applications that use these

products, which span such

diverse sectors as the automotive,

IT and graphic industries. Other

points of interest will be provided

by new product launches and

concepts that expand the

potential applications of printed

plastic films. For example, a new

film system based on Makrofol,

can be digitally printed and then

preformed, thus making it

possible to produce three-

dimensional plastic components

with photo-quality decoration,

whilst Makrofol TP 244, a new

UV-protected film, prevents

decorative printed images from

yellowing.

FESPA WORLD SPRING/05 53

FESPA WORLD SPRING/05 43

PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

The growth in FESPA shows will also bematched with a membership recruitmentdrive. "It’s important that we help thenational associations to attract moremembers," states Ricardo and goes on toexplain that he feels this can best beachieved by offering special benefits thatcan only be realised through associationmembership. He continues: "We intend toappoint a person who will be responsiblefor promoting and co-ordinating theefforts of the different nationalassociations, so that all membercompanies throughout Europe can enjoythe same level of advantages. We havealready started this process and I believe itwill really help us to properly fulfill ourobligations to the associations, ourcollaborators and the wider industry."

"I think that in all ways, FESPA isbecoming a much more professionally runorganisation," he muses. "I also think thatwe are becoming a more globalorganisation too and have becomesomething of a driving force in the sensethat we have organised literally dozens of

meetings with the CSGI, ASGA, SGIA, andhave made substantial progress towardsachieving our desire for mutual co-operation – in fact many of these newrelationships have already been cementedwhilst others will be finalised very shortly."

FESPA has also worked hard to forgecloser links with ESMA. "It has been one ofthe main areas of effort," confirms Ricardo, adding that ESMA has always beenimportant to FESPA. "The Committee ofsuppliers that is ESMA was originallycreated from within the FESPAorganisation, so in fact, it has always beena part of us." However, he acknowledgesthat this collaboration has possibly not progressed as speedily as he may have wished, although he remainsoptimistically philosophical. "Of course wehold different opinions at times – howcould we not? We are approaching thesame issues from a different perspective –that of the salesman and the customer! And from my own business life I knowand accept that there are things that mycustomers are never going to reveal to me.

And, if I were to become too inquisitive, I would lose them – that’s just thecommercial reality!"

Ricardo remains confident however, thathis successor will be able to consolidatethe links that have already been forgedbetween the two associations. "I know thatHellmuth won’t shirk the challenges thatlie ahead of him in this regard and havegreat faith in his ability to meet ESMA’sneeds in a constructive and beneficial way.The world is getting smaller and for thatreason peace and harmony are morenecessary than ever," he concludes.

As our interview comes to a close,Ricardo says: "Through the pages of FespaWorld I’d like to send my warmest regardsto all of the people I have been luckyenough to meet during my presidency andto bid them a fond farewell. I also want towish Hellmuth well in his new role. Hehas a lot of work ahead of him but I’msure, like me, he feels that our efforts aremore than outweighed by the level ofsatisfaction we achieve through workingfor FESPA."

In June, Hellmuth Frey will become FESPA’snew president. Val Hirst persuades him toreveal his plans for FESPA’s future.

Hellmuth Frey’s screenprinting careergot off to an exceptionally early start. As asmall boy he remembers spending a lot ofhis time at his parents’ screenprintingcompany and, almost without realising it,absorbed much of the skill and expertisethat has since proved so useful as he hasprogressed through the industry in bothhands-on and managerial capacities.

Hellmuth officially started work in thefamily business after leaving school in1963 and, a decade later, passed theexamination which allowed him to befully recognised as a Master Screen Printer. He describes Screenprinting as "a verypowerful and interesting sector", as well asone which continues to evolve. He says:

"Over the years I’ve seen many changes –jobs that always used to be screenprintedare now produced by digital or offsetmethods, but at the same time, there aremany new areas of application and for me,this is what helps to keep things fresh andexciting. For example I shouldn’t thinkthere is a single airplane, car or truck thathasn’t involved the screen process at some

point in its manufacture. Most technicalequipment and household white goodsalso have screenprinted elements too – infact it’s easier to list those items whichdon’t. I firmly believe that there willalways be a place for screenprintingalthough the applications – and thecustomers – will continue to change."

A member of the FESPA Board since 1996, Hellmuth has been

active within the German Screenprinting Association ‘forever’.

Page 28: FESPA WORLD Issue 39 - English

44 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

A member of the FESPA Board since1996, Hellmuth has been active within theGerman Screenprinting Association "forever’.

"My involvement started slowly," heremembers. "I began to participate in thework of the different committees, first thetechnical committee and then the trainingcommittee and so on, until eventually, inl983 I became the Chairman of the TechnicalCommittee in the German PrintingAssociation (BVDM), in other words thePresident of the German Screen Printers."His first association with FESPA came later. He continues: "The first FESPA exhibition Iattended was actually in Paris in l963 andfrom that point on, I attended all of theFESPA shows, but I first became involvedin the organisation after I had beendelegated to attend the FESPA GeneralAssembly on behalf of the GermanScreenprinting Association, an event thatalso took place in Copenhagen and was,

coincidentally, also the year that FespaWorld was first published. Following theresignation of Michael Domberger, Ibecame a Board Member."

What, I ask Hellmuth are FESPA’scurrent strengths and weaknesses? Hepauses before responding: "The strengthsare easy – 27 National Associations arecurrently affiliated to FESPA – which inAssociation terms gives us a hugemembership that is truly representative ofEurope as a whole. The FESPA brand isrecognised around the world and theFESPA exhibition remains the mostinfluential international show of its kind. The Association also provides the perfectforum for the exchange of ideas andinformation via the regular secretaries’meetings and indeed, this magazine.Latterly our scope has further increasedthanks to the close relationships we haveforged with Screenprinting Associationsthroughout the world and especially inAsia. But as for our weaknesses, we have toacknowledge that until now, the mainfocus has been screenprinting within thegraphics sector and thus, we have hadlimited appeal for industrial in-plant

screenprinters. We also need to do muchmore to encourage digital printers to jointhe associations, as they are and willcontinue to be a major driving force inboth the graphic and industrial sectors.Another weakness which I think is harderto reconcile are the problems that comewith having a multi-lingual membership.Trying to ensure that we are all saying thesame thing, even if we are saying it indifferent languages, is an on-goingchallenge."

I ask Hellmuth in which ways he feelsdigital printing will impinge onscreenprinting in the future. He replies:"For me, the two processes, screen anddigital, are very similar, both in terms ofapplications, and the materials andsubstrates that are used. And actually thesame applies to pad printing too - they are all processes that can be used in thegraphics, textile and industrial sectors and

it is therefore essential that screenprinterslearn everything they can about these twocomplementary processes. I think it is ourjob at FESPA to help the members of thevarious screenprinting associations togather as much knowledge as they can, both through the FESPA and mini-FESPAevents and the seminar programs andworkshops that we run simultaneously."

When I ask Hellmuth about theinitiatives he is planning to launch duringhis term of office, his answer is bothimmediate and definite. "I think the mostimportant thing we can do is to workclosely with all of the member associationsto ensure that we fully understand theworkings of the screen and digital sectorsas they operate in different countries. Itstrikes me that in the past, informationthat has been painstakingly gathered byone association could have been of equalinterest and use to several otherassociations too. I feel that we need to findmore effective ways of pooling ourcollective knowledge so that we don’t keepon ‘re-inventing the wheel’ andduplicating the same work over and overagain. Quite apart from anything else, this

could help everyone save a lot of moneythat could be used more profitably inother areas. In the same way I think weneed to find a way of ensuring that thereis more regular dialogue betweenindividual members. And this applies tomembers within the same associations aswell as those that belong to differentnational associations. In effect, we needto think of ourselves as one big family –and hopefully as a happy family!

Another thing that concerns Hellmuthis the amount of time that Board membershave to devote to FESPA. "Increasingly, time is an issue," he says. "Whilst atpresent everyone appreciates the value ofwhat we achieve and don’t, on the whole, begrudge the time it takes up, I amconcerned that future generations mightwell decide that it is too onerous to takeon Association responsibilities on top offull time employment. In these days of

instant communications business lifeproceeds at a much faster pace than everbefore and the demands are also muchgreater. So much so, that it often leavespeople feeling that they have preciouslittle time to spend with their families andon leisure pursuits, without takinganything else on. This is a problem that allassociations will have to face and I thinkthat we need to find ways of streamliningour activities as Board members if we wantFESPA to continue to be a major drivingforce within the screen and digital sectors.

Hellmuth concludes: Whilst thepresident of FESPA will always be seen asthe figurehead of the Association, I ammerely one of eight Board members.Without them, and the ongoing supportreceived from the FESPA secretariat andthe national associations, the Presidentalone would be able to accomplish verylittle. To properly fulfil its obligations andto assure its future, FESPA needs us all towork together.

I ask Hellmuth whether he is lookingforward to the challenges that lie ahead, although I could have anticipated his reply– "Of course," he says!

I think the most important thing we can do is to work

closely with all of the member associations to ensure that

we fully understand the workings of the screen and digital

sectors as they operate in different countries.

Billed as the ultimate marketing

screenprinters, but for their

customers. A joint venture,

between Eisma Businessmedia

(publishers of the Dutch

Silkscreen Magazine) and the

Zeefdruk Instituut, both located

in The Netherlands. The book is

written by Ad Versteeg, the

former Chief Editor of Silkscreen

Magazine and the secretary of

the Zeefdruk Instituut , who also

supplied most of the photo-

graphs used. The book seeks to

provide the layman with as

much information as he needs,

to understand all of the myriad

possibilities that the screen

process offers, and does so in

such an entertaining and inter-

esting way that the reader can’t

help but absorb the knowledge.

Following chapters on the

history of screenprinting together

with a succinct overview of the

technology, the book highlights

products and applications that

depend on screenprinting for

their very existence. It also

features over l00 photographs,

which illustrate different tech-

niques and applications and

provide inspiration. Many of the

pictures tell their own complete

story, following an application

through from concept to execu-

tion, whilst revealing all of the

hidden mysteries that lie behind

specific techniques. Perhaps most

importantly of all, the book

manages to convey something of

the skill, dedication and passion

that so many screenprinters

NEWS ROUND-UP – WHAT’S NEW IN SCREENPRINTING

Ashland introduces lowaromatic amine adhesiveAshland Specialty Polymers and Adhesives is introducing a new solventless, flexiblepackaging, laminating adhesive that provides very low aromatic amine extractables.

Regardless of which printing

method we use, we always have

to dry, or, to describe the process

more accurately, to burn UV

lacquer, as otherwise, it remains

wet. In order to achieve the

necessary burn we have to use

a source of UV radiation that is

twice as storng as the sun and

accordingly, great care must be

taken to protect the eyes and

skin. The photoactivator, which

is an integral part of the lacquer,

reacts with the source of UV

radiation to dry the lacquer more

or less instantly, regardless of the

thickness of the coating.

We can print or coat UV

lacquer using offset print, flexo

print, digital print or screenprint.

As always, each technology has its

own advantages and shortcomings.

In each case it is important to

ensure that the machine used

has a built-in UV lamp to dry

the applied lacquer. The drying

speed depends on the type of

lacquer used, the quantity of

photo-activators, the thickness

of the coating and of course, the

strength of the UV light source.

As a general rule, thicker lacquer

requires a more powerful source

of UV radiation.

When using lacquer it is useful

to remember that speed is not a

virtue. Since lacquer is machine

applied along the whole surface

of a substrate, we end up with a

finish that is similar to a plasticised

one. At first glance the most

acceptable printing technique

would appear to be offset, which

is both fast and cost effective and

offers the added advantage that

the sheet can be either partially

or fully lacquered. However,

because offset printing is so fast,

the lacquer is applied in a very

thin layer, which follows the

structure of the substrate’s printed

surface. This means that the laquer

doesn’t straighten and tighten as

it should and the net result is a

lack lustre print, rather than a

smooth and glossy one.

With flexo printing, it goes

without saying, that there is no

point in printing on to corrugated

cardboard if the lacquer is too thin

to remain on the surface and

provide the requisite smooth

finish. And when printing roll

labels, lacquering is generally

only used to provide additional

protection, rather than for

aesthetic reasons. Since the

majority of printed material comes

in sheet form, it is impossible to

lacquer it using the flexo print

method. In the case of digital

printing , the concept of UV

Fast curing ink from MarabuTampacure TPC, the UV-curable

Marabu pad printing ink is an

easily processed highly versatile

product, which can be used for

many applications and in

conjunction with a wide range of

substrates. Better still, it offers

significant time savings, thanks to

its immediate curing capability.

Tampacure TPC was originally

conceived for use within the

industrial padprinting sector, but

it was quickly recognised that the

use of a UV-curable ink offered

considerable advantages in other

fields of application too. Above

and beyond single-coloured

markings, it is also possible to

easily produce multi-colour

prints; whether for give-aways

such as lighters, tape dispensers

and pens, modern storage media,

sporting goods, drilling machines

and much else besides.

Tampacure TPC offers, high gloss,

good opacity, high chemical and

mechanical resistance and is suit-

able for use with

most padprint-

ing machines

operating in day to day printshop

conditions. Special colours are

also available, upon request.

Tangible BrilliancyUntil a few years ago, if we wanted to make our prints more exotic, we werelimited to using relief print or thermo print, or a combination of both methodsand the best we could hope for was partial lacquering. Ninoslav Bjelan of REM-B, ZAGREB shares his thought on the subject of UV lacquers.

film developed by Folex for the

production of direct-exposure

screenprint stencil artwork offers

UV image densities of 4 or more

and has an instant-dry top coat-

ing suitable for pigmented as well

as dye-based inks.

Folex Repro Jet P is a .125

micron clear transparent polyester

with an optical quality that obvi-

ates any incidence of the blue cast

common in print-down films and

ensures crisp, sharp image detail

with uniform high-density solids

and excellent visual contrast.

The coated polyester film has

good water- and tear-resistance as

well as outstanding registration

accuracy and dimensional stabili-

ty even when high levels of ink

are used.

Available in four reel widths,

from 610mm to 1270mm, Folex

Repro Jet P allows screen printers

to produce contact-exposure posi-

tives or negatives using any one

of the wide variety of current

large-format ink jet printer

models - piezo or thermal. So

customer artwork can be translat-

ed direct from CD to screen with-

out any manual intervention or

by the four-chambered, stainless

steel, chemistry tank, which

provides effective, four-step

filtering while re-circulating

biodegradable chemistry.

Comp-letely air-powered, the

tank can be operated where

wet environmental conditions

are an issue, thus increasing

operator convenience and safety

and the stainless steel, removable

lacquering for enhancement is

often confused with simply

lacquering to provide UV

protection, but both types of

lacquer can be applied with a

wide format digital printer. The

lacquer applying nozzle covers

the whole surface of the media

and is dried by a UV lamp, which

travels from one edge of the

material to the other, gradually

drying the whole print.

Since the nozzle doesn’t oper-

ate in the same way as cartridges,

it isn’t possible to lacquer separate

segments. And

it is also difficult to control both

the speed and the introduction

of the media. Screenprinting,

therefore offers the widest range

of possibilities. When using the

screen process, the thickness of

the lacquer can be determined by

the operator and can range from

between 10 microns up to 1 mm,

thus ensuring a consistently

glossy coating on a variety of

different materials.

In order to achieve the desired

level of gloss on a matte substrate,

we can apply enough lacquer to

fill in any uneven places. When

lacquering on to an absorbent

surface, we have to be particularly

careful - UV light will only dry

the lacquer which it can reach,

thus, when lacquering very dark

and absorbent surfaces, we need

to use a lacquer which remains

on top. (On surfaces which will

require folding, lacquer is not a

good option, due to the possibility

of cracking. It is better to plastisise

the whole surface instead.)

Experience dictates that 99% of

prints are partially lacquered

using glossy lacquer, which

means that the surrounding areas

need to be matte. The best results

are achieved on dark matte

surfaces. On a plasticised matte

sheet, where lacquer covers a

colour image, we will achieve an

even stronger intensity, which

provides a pleasing visual contrast

and also provides wear resistance

too. This combination of matte

plasticising and partial UV

lacquering should be used when-

ever the finished item is exposed

to any degree of wear and tear.

Another slightly cheaper

possibility, is partial lacquering

with UV lacquer on to a printed

material that has already been

lacquered with a standard offset

matte lacquer. This offers a

reasonable contrast between

glossy UV lacquer and the matte

surface. This variant is acceptable

for all printed material which is

not exposed to wear. In each case,

it is important to achieve the

greatest possible contrast between

the glossy and the matte surface.

To achieve an exceptionally high

gloss, we must use the low-densi-

ty net with a thick stencil and a

thick lacquer on a non-absorbent

surface. Since UV paints and

lacquers don’t evaporate, every-

thing remains on the paper, but

we should bear in mind that we

can only print lacquers on

brighter transparent colours, as

UV radiation doesn’t dry thick

coatings of black, grey, white,

gold and silver as efficiently.

Every UV paint has its own

corresponding UV lacquer, which

is characterised as glossy, matte or

structural, depending on its

appearance. A lacquer can also be

classified according to its physical

characteristics, when it is

described as either elastic or stiff,

more or less viscous, and as

having better or worse adhesion

to different surfaces. Chemically

speaking, lacquers can be classed

as suitable for use on absorbent or

non-absorbent surfaces, and as

having more or less chemical

resistance to solvents. And of

course, one of the big advantages

of UV paints and lacquers is that

they are truly environmentally

friendly!

WHAT’S NEW IN SCREENPRINTING

Pevikon paves the way for super-fine screenprintingHydro Polymers has improved the formulationof a plastisol based on its Pevikon P1510paste PVC resin used in the manufacture ofscreen printing inks.

The changes have been made

to accommodate the specialist

requirements of new super fine

screen-printing systems. In

particular, when used with

Stork’s new 250-mesh screen,

very fine print quality close to

rotogravure standard can be

achieved.

Pevikon P1510 incorporates

low viscosity, ultra fine particle

size and distribution, and since

it has no hard agglomerates it

enables the plastisol to pass

easily through fine mesh screens.

As a result, when a pattern is

transferred to paper or print

substrate, very accurate register is

achieved with enhanced tonal

variation between light and dark

areas within the printed image.

The low viscosity and good

flow rate also assists in maintain-

ing ink throughput in high

speed printing lines. The Pevikon

P1510 has high transparency,

high gloss properties and mixes

well with metallic pigments.

Plastisols are solvent free

systems that do not dry on the

screen, thus reducing the need

for post print process cleaning.

As well as being used in the

manufacture of plastisol based

silk screening inks, Pevikon

P1510 ultra fine paste making

homopolymer can be used for

fabric coating and impregnation,

stickers/decals and coil/metal

coatings and decorations.

This is the first material of its

type to incorporate built-in

Microban Antimicrobial protec-

tion that inhibits the growth of

potentially harmful bacteria,

mould and mildew. Called

Autotex AM, the unique substrate

has been specially designed for

any hygiene critical surface appli-

cation where preventing the

growth and spread of bacteria is

essential.

Cleanliness and hygiene are

crucial in areas such as hospitals,

convalescent homes, supermar-

kets, prisons and schools.

Research has proven that hand

contact with contaminated

surfaces can rapidly transfer

bacteria to other surfaces as well

as individuals.

The new film substrate

combines the proven benefits of

Autotex – a tough, durable

surface with an ink primer on

the reverse side that is receptive

to a wide range of graphic inks –

with the antimicrobial properties

of Microban technology. This

unique combination makes the

substrate ideal for any surface

application, such as membrane

keyboards, fascia panels, wall

coverings, shelf and bench tops,

or indeed, anywhere where

durability and antimicrobial

protection is needed. Autotex

AM is also scratch and chemical

resistant, and can withstand

the rigours of every day use and

the most aggressive cleaning

methods.

The Microban Antimicrobial

technology is incorporated into

the Autotex textured hard coat

during manufacturing, ensuring

an even distribution of the

antimicrobial agent throughout

the texture and film surface.

This effectively guarantees

surface protection throughout

the lifetime of the product.

Autotex AM has been exten-

sively tested and is proven to

inhibit the growth of a wide

range of bacteria, fungi and

moulds including MRSA, Salmon-

ella Enteritidis, Escherichia Coli

and Listeria Monocytogenes.

The antimicrobial protection of

Microban works by penetrating

the cell wall of micro-organisms

that come into contact with

the substrate surface and

disrupting their cell functions,

making them unable to grow or

reproduce.

CHIM 92 ADVERTORIAL

That’s the view of one of Vision

Supplies’ customers who recently

became the first company in the

UK to buy a new, fully automatic

Chim M4 screen cleaning machine.

Vision Supplies installed the

machine ‘somewhere in England’

in August – but that’s as much

detail as it is prepared to divulge.

According to Paul Waterton,

Managing Director of Vision

Supplies, the Chim M4 cleans

over 97% of screens without any

further treatment whatsoever. At

the same time, it thoroughly

de-greases the screens before

drying and feeding them into an

eight-frame magazine ready for

immediate re-use. The consequent

savings made in time and money

are astounding.

Most screen cleaning machines

use mainly organic solvents to

remove ink. However, these

solvents can chemically bind inks

into the mesh, making stains and

ghost images very difficult to

remove. Most of the traditional

chemicals used are unpleasant to

handle and work with. In

contrast the Chim M4, uses

specially developed three in one

surfactants to remove ink, stencil

and grease residues completely in

just a few minutes. The screens

are then de-stained and de-ghosted

before being rinsed with water

under ultra high pressure, dried

and fed into an automatic frame

unloader. Just a few minutes

later, they are ready for re-use.

The heart of the Chim system

is the surfactant solutions*.

Specially developed in Lyon, they

contain no organic solvents and

thus don’t damage the mesh or

adhesive. The system therefore

helps to prolong the life of the

screen, while minimising the

need for costly re-stretching.

(One company which uses Chim

cleaning solutions claims to have

reduced screen re-stretching costs

by over 60% during the last year).

Neither flammable nor classified as

hazardous, it is fully biodegradable

to EC standards, and can be

stored on the print shop floor.

Explains Paul Waterton:

“Each company uses a different

combination of inks, meshes and

stencils, which means that they

also need a bespoke cleaning

solution. A major advantage of

the Chim system is that the

proportions of the component

surfactants can easily be adjusted

to suit each user.”

As well as treating the screens,

the surfactant solutions keep the

machine clean while integral

filters ensure that waste products

and deposits are completely

removed. The product tanks

are replenished and emptied

automatically, making

maintenance a quick and easy

task – it takes less than 30 minutes

to empty, clean and re-fill each

section. Built from high-density

polypropylene and stainless steel,

the units are also durable and

aesthetically pleasing.

All four models in the range

are capable of running at up to

180 bar pressure - far higher than

most other cleaning machines on

the market. Operating at speeds

of up to 500 mm per minute, they

can handle screens of any size

from 1000mm to 2400mm high.

The entry level M1 is a semi-

automatic closed loop washer/

decoater while the M2 and M3

have increasing levels of

automation. The most

sophisticated, the M4, consists

of four in-line units and is fully

automatic with user- friendly PLC

controls. After sales support for

Chim machines in the UK is

provided by Registerprint and

maintenance agreements of up

to five years warranty are also

available.

"The UK company which

recently bought the first M4 from

us has been using Chim cleaning

solutions for over two years," says

Paul Waterton. "Previously they

were spending thousands of

pounds a year on anti-staining

products and the associated labour

costs were also astronomical.

Thanks to the Chim system, all

this has been eliminated, which

is making a tremendous difference

to their bottom line. Unsurprisingly,

they are thrilled with their

purchase – and want to keep it

their secret!"

However this wasn’t the view

of the latest purchaser. B & P

Screenprint in Stockport, was so

impressed with what it heard and

saw about the Chim system that

its Production Director, Tony

Hollywood, travelled to view the

equipment in operation in

France, where it was demonstrat-

ed at two independent installa-

tions, which produced similar

work to B & P.

Tony says: "I had genuinely

never seen a screen cleaning

machine that could remove ink,

stencil and ghost images in one

pass. The results were amazing -

frame after frame was processed

without any further treatment

whatsoever." Upon his return to

the UK, Tony recommended that

B & P place an order!

“I am delighted that B & P

Screenprint are investing in our

equipment and screen cleaning

chemicals. It will also give us an

opportunity to show other

prospective UK customers just

how efficient we can make the

screen reclaiming process”,

concludes Paul Waterton.

New options for the NUR Tempo

Autotype expands HP Indigo capabilities

The Rho now faster than ever!In little over a year since the

launch of the Rho 205, there

have been several product

advances, including the option to

increase the number of print

heads from eight to 16, effectively

doubling the output speed,

together with several unique ink

options. The Rho was the world’s

first flat-bed to offer white ink

printing, a capability that has

since been extended to include

both under and over printing,

plus two additional spot colours

and a selective varnish option.

In addition, the Durst

feeder/stacker system enables

fully automated production, and

unattended operation. Now,

Durst has announced a further

development. ‘Smart Speed’ is

the name the company has given

to describe the dramatic improve-

ment in output speed available

on both the eight and 16 head

versions of the Rho 205. Smart

Speed is the result of the clever

use of a new image processing

software and an encoder that

work together to facilitate the

high speed transport of media

without any loss of quality. It

increases output by approximately

30% across all print quality levels

(1, 2, and 3), which means that

at print level one, the Rho

205/16 is capable of printing up

to 65m2 per hour.

Smart Speed will be available

for immediate delivery on all new

machines and, in keeping with

the Durst philosophy of being

able to upgrade existing models,

will also be available as an option

on currently installed machines

by the end of March.

Cartotecnica P2, who chose the

Centurian2 to replace its tradi-

tional laminating machine, was

impressed with its high speed,

flexibility and quality perform-

ance. Another strong point in the

machine’s favour is its versatility,

which enables it to run sheet sizes

from 25 cm x 28 cm up to 102

cm x 140 cm at a maximum

speed of 60 m/min, thus facilitat-

ing the use of a wide range of

thermal lamination films. These

include various thickness' and

finishing characteristics and are

available in a variety of options,

such as glossy and matt

polypropylene, acetate, linen and

coloured metallic finished ther-

Based in Opera, Cartotecnica P2

was first established in the Milan

area in 1979 and draws on three

generations of experience in the

paper-converting sector. Its

current production facility covers

an area of 2.000 sqm and is

equipped with a complete range

of machinery for paper conver-

sion. The company, which serves

clients in the advertising, packag-

ing and publishing industries, on

behalf of Northern Italian

publishers and printers offers a

diverse range of services such as

lamination, varnishing, die-

cutting, mounting, folding and

gluing, as well as manual finish-

ing. It reports that its new

purchase has enabled it to attain

significant gains in efficiency.

Rodolfo Pellegri, the company’s

Managing Director, comments:

"Replacing a traditional laminat-

ing system with a device like the

Centurion2, which uses pre-glued

thermal film, has resulted in a

number of important advantages.

First of all, the new GBC system

has allowed us to avoid human

error – we no longer have to esti-

mate the right quantity of glue to

be applied on the film and make-

ready times and waste are

reduced. Furthermore, the

powdering and drying time is

eliminated." He adds that the fact

that the Centurion2 is a very user

and environmentally friendly

system, is yet another benefit. In

fact, so enamoured is Cartotecnica

P2 that it is planning to make

the investment in a second

Following last month’s comprehensiveresumé of last year’s Fespa GeneralAssembly we feature here some furthercountry reports which were notincluded due to pressure on editorialspace.

The Portuguese ScreenprintingAssociation, Apigraf, reported that Portugalis finally experiencing an export-ledrecovery from the recession, whichfollowed the cyclical downturn since 2001,and which saw GDP fall by an estimated1.3% in 2003. In 2005, the assumedsustained recovery of output is projectedto raise annual growth of GDP to about 21/4%, and private consumption andinvestment are expected to graduallystrengthen. At present, economic growth isbeing sustained by an increase in exportswhich increased significantly during 2004.Screenprinters however, are still facing adifficult economic situation and arehaving to deal with increased competition.

One of the many problems thatPortuguese screenprinters are having tocope with is e-auctions, where jobs go tothe lowest bidder. Accordingly, Apigraf isseeking to draw up a recognised code ofconduct to be approved by all interested

parties and will hopefully be able topresent this to FESPA in the near future. Asis usual, the Association will hold an annualgeneral meeting which, in addition to theusual management business, will also coverthe succession issues that relate to family-run businesses. It will also be looking attechnical subjects such as workflow.

ARED, the Turkish ScreenprintingAssociation reports that Turkey is nowcompletely focused on taking its place inthe European Union and is working hardto secure its membership. The Turkisheconomy has grown by 12.4% over thepast year but unfortunately, theunemployment rate has also reached some13 % and foreign investments remainlower than desirable. During the first fivemonths of 2004, Turkey’s trade balancestood at $42.6 billion dollars worth ofimports against $27.5 billion dollars worthof exports. On the other hand, GNP hasshown an increase of $4500.

As far as the screen sector is concerned, there are 820 printing companies of which70% are Screenprinters and 29.5% areDigital Printers. The remaining 0.5% areusing tampo printing and other printingtechniques. Although in the past,

investment in screen-printing equipmenthas been quite low, the increasingpopularity of outdoor advertising, has led to a significant increase in theacquisition of new kit, especially largescreenprinting systems. Digital printershad a brisk start to the year thanks to thelocal elections which took place duringMarch 2004 and this has led to a hugeincrease in the number of companiesoffering digital printing services. Manycompanies are also now becoming more aware of theadvantages of UV curable inks, both interms of their wider colour gamut and the environmental benefits.

The Association has set up manyworking committees to help to improvetechnical standards within the industryand also to provide training facilities. It has also hosted many meetings withcompanies involved in the outdooradvertising sector.

At the end of last year the Associationsponsored the second Paper, Carton andInk Press Symposium and exhibition, which took place in December.

It reports that presently, most investmentin new equipment is being made in thedigital sector, although screenprintingequipment is also being sold into thepackaging and industrial sectors. Manyprinting companies are worried about thenew environmental and quality demandsthat EU membership will bring and someare actively researching how othercountries new to the EU have coped.

Many new screen and digital suppliershave recently entered the Romanianmarket, but as yet, there has been nosignificant take-up of UV inks.

Two large exhibitions, Reclama which isheld in the Spring and the Print Showwhich is held in the Autumn, both inBucharest, provided a welcomeopportunity for member companies toattend seminars and to network generally.

Currently, the Association is workinghard to increase its database and topersuade more Romanian companies toattend FESPA 2005.

The GPSF – the ProfessionalOrganisation for French Serigraphy -boasts 130 members representing smalland medium sized companies. It aims toprotect the interests of the whole profession, not only its members and representsemployers both in negotiations withunions and government bodies. Recently,

the membership has stagnated which tosome extent can be explained by thegeneral decline in political and socialinvolvement in France. To overcome thisproblem, the Association is planning togenerally improve its communicationstrategy, which, in the first instance, willinvolve setting up a new website.

The Association has also chosen toimprove its collective agreement and toask the government to implement itthroughout the whole printing sector. Inspite of its limited means, it has also startednegotiating with the unions, covering suchtopics as job classification, salaries, healthand pension cover, training andrelationships with social partners. Theclassification agreement was a genuineturning point, since it helped the Associationto increase its legitimacy and improve itsglobal image, with the unions in particularand social partners in general. It iscurrently negotiating for a wider applicationarea for the collective agreement, whichwill include digital technology. TheAssociation’s next initiative will be arenewed focus on professional training. It has set new qualification standards andwill help schools to provide the requisiteinitial training.

Environmental and waste processingissues continue to excite debate withregulations becoming more exacting astime goes on. The Association is thusplanning to update its environmentalguide, "Produire Popre en Serigraphie –Seriegraphy, - an environmentally firendlyindustry."

With regard to the economic situation, the screenprinting sector is stable, although there has been a noticeableincrease in production, turnover and saleprices since last year. Experts hint at aneconomic revival, but remain outwardlycautious as investments remain level, andinternational competition is high.

According to a survey carried out amongstthe Association’s members, the mainreasons for this stagnation in growth isdown to hiring difficulties, contributionsand a lower demand.

The Swiss Screenprinters' Associationheld its General Assembly during April andattracted 22 attendees. Honorary memberKurt Rutschi Wolfgang Lange of theVerband Werbetechnik (Federation ofAdvertising Technology) received anespecially warm welcome, but since only14 voting members were present, no issuesof major importance could be formulated. However, discussions took place regardingthe new structure of the Secretariat andSeripost Magazine. It is hoped that bycirculating the Bulletin of the Associationof Swiss Reprographic Companiesalongside Seripost, it will appear to be amore attractive proposition for bothadvertisers and readers. Under thePresident's leadership, an editorialcommittee will be set up which will dealwith financial matters and deadlines.

The current Secretary, Walter Trösch, will be standing down and the SecretariatAgreement has thus been terminated.Until further notice, the Secretariat will belocated at the same address as the President.

No contributions have yet been made tothe draft for the course module relating tolarge format digital printing. The Board willreport on any further action at a later date.

Following Wolfgang Lange’s plea for acloser co-operation between hisAssociation and that of related industriessuch as screenprinting and reprographicswhen devising professional training, TheFederation of Advertising Technology willprepare a study to discover what thedifferent professions have in common.Thereafter, it will be be decided how amodular apprenticeship scheme, whichwill encompass the needs of all threeassociations, can be successfully launched.

Obituary Alan Dunn

It is with great sadnessthat we have to reportthe sudden death ofAlan Dunn, the GeneralManager of G. Bopp &Co. Limited, the UK-based subsidiary of G.Bopp & Co. AG.Alan started his career withthe company in September1966, when he sold wire cloth, and was appointed as GeneralManager in 1979. He hadplanned to retire in September2006. Alan was a large andimposing man, and althoughhe knew everything there wasto know about the company’sproducts, the woven meshused in screenprinting andfiltration, he retained anendearingly infectious

enthusiasm. In recent years heled a crusade to bringprecision and process controlto the screenprinting industryand many of the majorcompanies have him to thankfor their improved productiontechniques. His energy andexpertise has taken G BoppLimited from a modestbusiness operating above ashop in North London, to alarge and rapidly expandingindustrial factory inDerbyshire.

It is particularly poignantthat Alan’s death occurred at atime when he was gentlywinding down towardsretirement and finding, to hisgreat delight, that his drives ofthe tee were extending as hisgolf handicap was reducing. Itis difficult to believe that his

measured tones, interspersedwith his characteristic‘Harrumph’, will be heard nomore. One thing however, iscertain. In heaven, harps willnow be strung to the correcttension and of course, theywill be either steel wire or lowelongation polyester, whilstthe frames will also beupgraded to deal withimproved performance!

Alan was truly one of thosepeople who broke the mould. He leaves a widow, Lesley, hisfour children and twograndchildren, all of whomwill miss him greatly. His sadand untimely death will alsobe deeply mourned by hisstaff, who he regarded as partof his extended family, together with the screenindustry as a whole.

FESPA 2005 – THE FUTURE OF GLOBAL IMAGING

TM

Corporate sponsor

Platinum sponsors

"Welcome to the Spring issue of FESPA World in

which I hope you find everything you need to know

about the forthcoming FESPA Event in Munich.

The last 18 months have been an exciting time

here in the FESPA head office, as we formulated a

strategy that will hopefully ensure that this year’s

show is bigger and better than ever before. And all

the signs do indeed suggest that it will be a record-

breaking year, with over 400 exhibitors and in

excess of 30,000 visitors attending FESPA 2005

between 3lst May to 4th June.

What I now realise, is that for so many of our

exhibitors, the FESPA exhibition really is the

culmination of all of the effort and energy that

they have expended on product development,

research and marketing over the last several

months. All that time spent testing and evaluating

products, placing adverts and mailing prospective

business leads suddenly becomes worthwhile, when

finally, they have the opportunity to actually meet

you, their customers and to show you their

products and services at first hand.

At last their business acquires an all important

human dimension.

For you, the visitor, the exhibition also presents

an ideal opportunity to interact with all of your

suppliers face-to-face and to raise all of those issues

that aren’t usually covered in their promotional

literature. And because FESPA is a ‘working

exhibition’ all of your senses will be engaged. You

will actually be able to see, feel, hear - and even

smell – the equipment in action and will thus gain

a much greater and more valuable depth of

knowledge and understanding than you could ever

glean from merely looking through catalogues and

data sheets.

What’s more, FESPA is much more than just

another exhibition. In addition to being the single

largest international showcase for all of the

hundreds and thousands of products relevant to

the screen and digital sectors, It also provides the

perfect forum for everyone working within the

screen and digital sectors in whatever capacity and

in whichever locality. There truly is no better

networking opportunity in the World!

But to get the best from FESPA, as with any other

event, you do need to plan and prepare! To help

you do this most effectively we have devoted the

following 50 pages of this issue of FESPA World to

ensuring that you can make the best possible use of

the time that you spend at the show.

I recommend that you take a few moments to

familiarise yourself with the show layout and

identify your ‘must-see’ exhibitors. To make

everything as easy as possible, we have provided a

separate floorplan for each of the four halls, which

have all been organised so that they represent

specific areas of interest. Each plan is accompanied

with a list of all of the hall’s exhibitors, together

with their stand numbers.

We have also highlighted some of the companies

you can expect to see in each of the halls and

provided a brief resumé of the products they intend

to display at the show. In addition, further

information on all of the exhibitors is available on

our easily searchable on-line catalogue, which you

will find at www.fespa2005.com

One undoubted ‘must-see’ for all visitors, are the

Showcase Seminar theatres, which I am pleased to

say, will be offering in excess of 40 sessions, all of

which are completely free!! Many of these sessions

will feature leading speakers (and specialists) from

around the world and a small foretaste of the joys

to come can be savoured by simply turning now to

pages 34/35, where you will find the seminar

timetable.

So, equip yourself with a pad and pen, treat

yourself to a coffee and settle back to plan how you

can extract the maximum interest enjoyment and,

most importantly of all, value, from FESPA 2005.

I look forward to seeing you there!"

PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

Ricardo Rodriguez Delgado began histerm of office in Madrid during FESPA2002 and as he now freely admits, itwasn’t necessarily the most auspiciousstart. FESPA 2002 was, at that stage, thebiggest exhibition that FESPA had everhosted and it brought Ricardo face to facewith both the practical and logisticalrealities of staging an international eventof this ilk. As he rightly remarks, theexhibition was the Association’s mainactivity and it was becoming increasinglyclear that if the show was going tocontinue to grow and prosper, it wouldhave to be organised in a more direct anddynamic way. Ricardo’s first task aspresident was to persuade his fellow boardmembers and other interested parties thatthe only way forward was to bring theshow’s organisation in-house and forFESPA to hire its own professionalexhibition team.

Although this initiative originally metwith some resistance, it is clearly adecision that has paid off handsomely."Fespa 2005 in Munich will be on adifferent level than any FESPA, which haspreceded it," proclaims Ricardoconfidently, adding that in addition to thefact that with over 470 exhibitors, theshow will be bigger than ever before, it hasalso attracted 130 completely newexhibitors. He says: "We had to meet the

challenges associated with offering thebiggest screen and digital printing show inthe world, and we didn’t feel that wecould do that unless we enlisted the helpof a highly qualified professional team.Very soon now, everyone active within thescreen and digital sectors will converge inMunich in order to sell and buy productsand services and to enjoy all of theancillary activities that surround the show, and I don’t think they’ll leavedisappointed. And, thanks to the efforts ofthe exhibition team, we now also havenew FESPA shows to look forward to. Thefirst of these, FESPA World Expo in Indiawill take place in New Delhi 1st to 4thDecember of this year and plans arealready well underway for the next FESPAin 2007. In addition, we are alsoorganising a digital show in Amsterdam,16-18 May 2006. None of this would havebeen possible previously."

And if Ricardo is proud of the changesthat have occurred regarding theorganisation of the exhibition, he isequally enthusiastic about what he refersto as the new spirit of co-operation thatexists within FESPA. "We are organisingthe FESPA World Expo in collaborationwith the Screenprinting Association ofIndia (SPAI) and welcome the possibility ofinitiating similar allegiances, which will beas mutually beneficial." he says.

It’s three years since Ricardo Rodriguez Delgado wasinaugurated as President of FESPA. Here, he reflectson his presidency with Val Hirst.
