On Wednesday, March 31st, twelve Year 8 students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College were invited to attend a ‘Think Forensic’ event as part of the Young Chamber

scheme that is currently running in the school. During the day, students were required to take on the role of a Scenes of Crime Officer’ to solve a murder.

The day began with a brief introduction to forensic science and the various jobs available in this area. The team from ‘Think Forensic’ all have a background in the police service or forensic science and could therefore offer expert advice about how to get into these sorts of careers. The students were then split into groups and followed a carousel of activities such as finger printing, entymology, blood spatter and a staged crime scene to analyse. Each activity was very interactive with students actually fingerprinting themselves and analysing hair and fibres under microscopes. Throughout the day, students were encouraged to use their initiative, solve problems and make important decisions that real life scenes of crime officers would make.The students thoroughly enjoyed their day, so much so that some students insisted on travelling back to school in their scenes of crime jumpsuits!

PUPILS TAKE PART IN C.S.I. FERRYHILL

Ferryhill Town Centre is set for a make-over thanks to a grant designed to renovate shop fronts and make them more attractive. Grants totalling £245,000 were available through Durham County Council’s Regeneration and Economic Development department and premises in Ferryhill, Spennymoor, Horden, Bishop Auckland and Crook successfully applied.It is hoped the funding will contribute towards the environmental quality of the

town centre, by improving the design and appearance of commercial premises.Tattu Madness in Ferryhill received £20,000 for a concealed safety shutter and traditional shop front and The Greyhound Public House received £1,500 for a new sign, exterior lighting and timber and glass replacement.Other Ferryhill premises which received funding include: West End Post Office, Crafty Cards, Ferrydec, Suntanna, Dolphin Tooling, Ferryhill Working Mens’ Club and Meikles.

A 55 year-old woman appeared at Durham Crown Court recently, charged with causing the death of a Chilton woman.Elizabeth Ann Parker faces the charge that, on July 11th last year, motorcyclist Alison Maughan was killed as result of her dangerous driving.

Mrs Maughan, 47, was on her way to Scotland when the accident, which involved several vehicles, occurred. She was pronounced dead at the scene.The case was adjourned for ten weeks and Mrs Parker, from Darlington, was bailed until her plea hearing on June 17th.

Chilton and Windlestone WMC has a number of charity events taking place this month.On Thursday, April 15th, the club will be taken back in time to the 1940’s for a ‘Back to the Blitz’ Street Party in aid of Help for Heroes.There will be an old fashioned sing-along, flag waving, Last Post and a Last Night at the proms-style finale. Tickets, priced at £4, can be purchased on the door and include a wartime supper and a donation to the Help for Heroes charity.A second fundraiser for the same charity will be taking place on Friday, April 16th, when entertainment will be

Monday, March 29th marked a sad day for Girl Guiding in Ferryhill. Mrs Marilyn Edwards retired from Guiding after 34 years of dedicated service. In that time Mrs Edwards has lead Brownies, Guides and Rangers and had been the Division Commissioner for

two different divisions within Durham South. Many of her former charges are now parents of the current members of guiding. Ferryhill Brownies held a surprise party for Marilyn, when several members of Guiding attended. The Mayor of Ferryhill, Eileen

Marilyn Edwards on the back row, with the Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Eileen Martin, and members of Ferryhill’s Girl Guides.

Martin also attended to present Mrs Edwards with a bouquet of flowers. A spokesperson for the organisation said, “Susan and Heather would like to say a big thank you to all who attended. Also to say goodbye to Marilyn and that you will be missed.”

A resident of Chilton Care Centre received a visit from the Mayor of the Village recently, in celebration of her 100th Birthday.Alice Skene, who was born in Chopwell, Blaydon, went to school in the Lake District before attending Durham

High School.The former physiotherapist married her husband, Stephen Skene, in 1939, after meeting at a dance in Durham.Together they holidayed around the globe, even going on a world tour with the Law

Society, as Stephen was a solicitor.The couple had one son, who they raised in Ferryhill, and Alice has two grandaughters, who are both married.A party was held for Alice and her friends on Saturday, April 10th.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was attacked by another woman.The incident happened on Friday, March 26th, just before noon in the back lane which runs behind Beverley Court at Chilton.A Durham Police spokesman said the victim, 31, was approached by a man and two women.One of the women grabbed her by the hair, pushed her to

the ground and punched her a number of times before she and the other two ran off. The victim suffered bruising to her head and face but did not need hospital treatment.Her attacker is described as in her mid-20s, 5ft 1inch tall, of medium build and with a pale complexion. She had black hair and was wearing a blue and white tracksuit-type jacket.PC Dave Uzell, who is

CANNABIS GRoWER To CRoWN CoURT

Police received a tip-off that cannabis was being grown at a house in Watt Street in Dean Bank, Ferryhill, and on visiting the premises found there to be a strong smell associated with the Class B drug. Officers returned with a search warrant and found Dean Ferguson asleep in bed. In total, 51 plants, in various stages of growth, along with a thermometer, feed drums, plant pots, light fittings, air filter units and foil lining were found. The plants had a higher than average yield of skunk cannabis, which was beyond

personal use and grown for commercial gain. The 34 year-old admitted to having a bad cannabis habit and to growing the plants but at the instruction of someone else. Ferguson claimed that he owed money from a poker debt but did not name who would ultimately benefit from the cannabis cultivation. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe felt that their powers were insufficient to deal with the matter, which was committed to Durham Crown Court for hearing on May 5th. Ferguson was released and had his unconditional bail extended.

NEW DIAL A RIDE SERVICEPreparations are well in hand to launch a new dial a ride minibus service in the county that will be known as Link2 and starts on the 1st of June.The service will be provided by 8 seater vehicles that will be fully accessible and can be booked door to door, just like a taxi but at bus fare prices. Concessionary bus holders will be able to travel free, just like other buses.Link2 is primarily aimed at areas of the country where there is no alternative bus service which is within 10 minutes walk or where a journey requires the use of

two buses, as can happen with journeys to hospital for example. It will also be a useful service for anyone with a mobility problem, whether it is a temporary or permanent condition, and who are unable to access existing public transport.Operating five days a week Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm with advance bookings taken up to 2 weeks ahead or on the day with a minimum of one hours’ notice.The Link2 vehicles will of course be shared by users and journeys may not therefore be direct as the driver will pick

up and drop off other users’ on route.Councillor Neil Foster is cabinet member for Regeneration and Economic Development said today,“We’re investing £700,000 in this new service which is designed to complement not compete with other local transport providers and it will certainly meet an identified gap in provision in various parts of the county. It will be good news for a lot of people.”Full details of the service will be announced nearer the time along with photographs of the new buses.

had.In total, Funeralcare offices in the area collected 144 eggs as well as gifts of soft toys, baby clothes and fresh eggs. These were shared between the

Statistics show that approximately 1 in 3 people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. Research has shown that 50%-75% of avoidable cancer deaths are due to the cancer being diagnosed in its late stages, early diagnosis could save over 5,000 lives a year.The ‘Talking About Cancer’ team (TAC) consists of trained staff and volunteers working across the local area. The team aims to work with local communities to increase the understanding about cancer signs and symptoms, and to raise awareness of the NHS National Screening Programme (bowel, breast and cervical) and how to reduce the risk of certain cancers. A spokesperson for the

team said, “Our aim is to reduce incidence rates and improve survival rates.”“We will be visiting local community venues, including local clubs, associations, libraries, mother and toddler groups, Church groups, local events, community based groups, Sure Start centres, working men’s clubs and any venue where people may meet. Dear Editor,I joined the Junior Leaders Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps when I was sixteen years-old. On reaching eighteen, I was able to join my own regiment (11th Hussars) who were stationed at Bergen Belsen In Germany. I stayed with this wonderful unit until they were about to be amalgamated, both here in the UK and overseas. Every year, my wife and I go to our Regimental Reunion and meet up with the rest

of our 'Army Family' who are able to attend. On each occasion we make a huge collection for the Selly Oak Hospital. Even though my wife was not in any of the armed forces, she has organised the Poppy Appeal, with my help, for almost 35 years. It must now be obvious that we both have the welfare of service personnel past and present foremost in our minds. On becoming Mayor, I saw this as an opportunity to

promote the cause of Help for Heroes and I have been amazed at the response from every section of our community, for which I am deeply grateful.For someone to accuse me of 'Aligning' myself with this charity is despicable and this person should be ashamed of trying to score cheap political points out of such an emotive issue. You disgust me.

Dear Editor,In isuue 465 of The Chapter, I was pleased to read the front page spread about the Help for Heroes night and the money we raised, only to be totally disgusted by the letter to yourself on page 6 by Andrew Fowler. In his attack on certain people "aligning" themselves with this charity and then his opinion about the war in Afghanistan. Can I firstly say that the Help for Heroes charity has a very strict policy that no political party is represented in this in any shape or form

and that all members of the Ferryhill Help for Heroes do so with no other motive but to send help in whatever way we can to the unfortunate soldiers that return injured from the war.His opinion towards the government and the conflict in Afghanistan, and any personal vendetta he may have towards certain individuals, is totally out of place and to throw any such acusation towards anyone who has worked extremely hard for the charity without political motive or any reason other

than to help injured soldiers is a disgrace. I challenge this person to come and meet me at our next Help for Heroes meeting to explain his opinions and also advise where he was on the charity night. “Actions speak louder than words” Myself and many other Ferryhill residents are doing what we can until our lads are safe home; what about him?

The Ferryhill Wheelers Mountain High Race Team’s successful start to the season continued over the weekend, with some notable performances in a wide range of events across the north of England.Undefeated in time-trials so far this season, Mathilde Matthijsse broke the club record in the Lancashire Road Club 10 mile time trial. In good conditions, on a course with a reputation for producing fast times, Mathilde lowered Beverly Fletcher’s time by 24 seconds to record a very impressive 21 minutes and 43 seconds. In a very competitive field, Mathilde was once again

first lady. In the same event Michael Warner smashed his own personal best to record 22.30.Top junior James Edmond was not competing this weekend due to his participation in the British Cycling North East training camp at Hetton Country Park. The very best under 16 year-olds from all over the northern region were invited to participate in two days of intensive coaching. This is a stepping stone onto greater things and 13 year-old James’s selection is just reward for his excellent progress this year.Meanwhile, over on the North-East Coast, the Mountain High squad were represented in the

Bridlington CC Spring Road Race by Paul Stubbs, Andy Donaldson and Carl Mustill. Unfortunately, Andy punctured in the first half of the race, but Paul and Carl made the key selections on the uphill sections. With two riders away off the front on the last lap, Paul sprinted to a creditable 5th place, with Carl in the same bunch just outside of the first twenty.The weekend was rounded off with solid performances by Howard Heighton in the Nelson Wheelers 50 mile time trial over in Lancashire and Ollie Pearce in the Steel Cycles Saturday Series near Newcastle.
