A .M. Notes

Embracing Agony 1 Corinthians #49 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 John Piper: …The way we live our lives has eternal consequences. Life is a proving ground where we prove who we are, whom we trust, and what we cherish. Eternal life, the upward call, the crown of righteousness—all these hang on what our life says about who we are, whom we trust, and what we love. Run (vs. 24) is in the present tense which conveys the truth that this is a lifelong struggle/race Hebrews 12:1-2 Besetting Sins - In the case of most people, there is often one sin to which, either from their situation, taste, constitution, or other circumstances—where they are more powerfully tempted than to others….Other sins are like unnecessary clothing to the racer. But besetting sins are like a ball and chain around his ankle! Our sense is that if change feels like self-effort and hard work, then it is probably legalistic & not animated by the Holy Spirit. WHAT IS SELF-CONTROL? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Please understand that during this time, Bob will be travelling, studying, visiting family, and pursuing ministry opportunities with individuals that he has wanted to visit for some time. Therefore, he will not be accessible for the duration of his Sabbatical. If a need arises that Bob would typically respond to, please contact Tim, Tom, Steve, or one of the deacons, and they will be more than happy to make sure your need is addressed. What A Savior 1. Once I was straying in sin’s dark valley No hope within could I see; They searched thro’ heaven and found a Savior To save a poor lost soul like me. Chorus O what a Savior, O hallelujah! His heart was broken on Calvary. His hands were nail-scarred, His side was riven; He gave His lifeblood for even me. 2. He left the Father with all His riches, With calmness sweet and serene; Came down from heaven and gave His lifeblood To make the vilest sinner clean. Chorus 3. Death’s chilly water I’ll soon be crossing, His hand will lead me safe o’er I’ll join the chosen in that great city, And sing up there forevermore. Chorus He gave His lifeblood for even me.

Articles Why 144,000 means 144,000 By Pastor Clint Archer I’d like to offer five reasons the 144,000 witnesses comprised of 12,000 celibate men from each of the twelve tribes of ethnic Israel are actually 144,000 witnesses comprised of 12,000 celibate men from the twelve tribes of ethnic Israel… 1. What John wrote makes perfect sense as it stands written, and there is no better way to write it. The verse says:

Rev 7: 4-8 And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: 12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from the tribe of Gad, 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh, 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, 12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph, 12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.

So, had John wanted to communicate that there was a particular crowd consisting of a particular number of representatives from each Israelite tribe … how else could he have said it? I submit that John went out of his way to use more ink than one would normally think necessary to specifically avoid any alternative interpretation than this: that he was speaking about ethnic Israel, the nation made up of tribes; tribes he names, by name. 2. The verse above that passage (vs. 3) calls these people sealed servants of God, as a subset of all believers. Some explain that this is actually an indeterminate, innumerable number of all believ-ers from all nations, not just Israel, because all believers from all nations are servants of God. But that is akin to me saying, “We have set apart a dozen members of our church to be part of a short-term missions team,” and you understanding that as, “We have set apart all members of our church to be on the team because all members of our church… are members of our church.” And the verse below that passage (vs. 9) specifically identifies this group as distinct from an indeterminate, innumerable number of all believers:

Rev 7:9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,

When John can’t number the crowd he knows how to say that. And when he wants to indicate they are not just from the tribes of Israel but all tribes, he knows how to say that too. 3. Chapter 14 describes them as celibate men, not as all the redeemed. This is made clear by the fact that John calls this group the “redeemed from mankind

Page 11: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 … · The Savannah Sacred Harp Singers will have their monthly singing in the piano side overflow room on Saturday, March 7, from 2:00

11

as firstfruits,” a designation that in Scripture always implies a smaller sampling of a lar-ger group, not the whole group. Also, John distinguishes these men from women, which can’t be the whole group of redeemed, as that group is never referred to as multiple men, although sometimes as a single Bride.

Rev.14:3-4 and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living crea-tures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been re-deemed from the earth. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from man-kind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb,

4. All the redeemed are sealed by the Spirit, but these men are sealed on the forehead as well. Some say that because this group is sealed this means it must be a group of all the redeemed, because Satan seals all his followers, so it makes sense that God would seal all his followers too. Well, I’m not ready to concede that God does anything to mimic Satan’s methodol-ogy, but that aside, God’s followers are all previously sealed by the Spirit anyway (2 Cor 1:22); the sealing on the forehead means a further distinguishing, visible mark to do with this specific commission. Everyone at a graduation ceremony is clothed, but some are conferred with a further garment or two to signify their special role or attainment in that ceremony. 5. My main reason for interpreting the 144,000 as 144,000 is because that is—contrary to popular belief—how numbers are used in the Book of Revelation. Of the 254 uses of numbers in the book, only two uses are clearly symbolic from the context (the 666 of 13:18, which specifically says it is symbolic, and the seven spirits of 1:4 which we know from other Scriptures can’t be literal). So, we should always take the number’s literal numeric value unless there is clear reason not to. What constitutes a clear reason? One, if taking it literally would lead to an absurdity; two, if taking the number symboli-cally adds clarity; three, when the number is an established, common figure of speech the reader is meant to interpret as symbolic. The number 144,000 fails all three requirements to be symbolic: taking it literally is not absurd, it would rob the meaning of clarity to take it any other way, and nowhere in Scripture or Greek vernacular is there any evidence of the number 144,000 representing any connotation other than what the num-ber denotes. Why care? So, why does it even matter whether the 144,000 are a literal legion of celibate Jewish men, or if it represents all the redeemed? While I concede that the interpretation has (literally) zero impact on how I will live my life or lead my church or worship my Savior today, the hermeneutic that led to the incorrect interpretation is a hermeneutic that can lead to other misinterpretations that may very well affect my life directly. When an interpreter approaches a text with the presupposition that “The number can’t mean what it says because my system does not allow it to, so I need to come up with a different meaning for it…” then there is no hermeneutic barrier to prevent other numbers in Scripture from being manipulated or disregarded as well.

Page 12: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 … · The Savannah Sacred Harp Singers will have their monthly singing in the piano side overflow room on Saturday, March 7, from 2:00

12

Why is six days of creation literally six days, and how do we know how many apos-tles Jesus chose, or how many times Paul asked God to remove the thorn in his flesh, or how many times we need to warn a divisive man, or how many witnesses we should take with us when doing church discipline? Numbers have numeric values, and yes, they can be used metaphorically (forgive a repentant offender 70 times 7). But in order to carefully discern when a number is literal and when not we need to have a higher respect for our hermeneutic rules than we have for our preconceived eschatology. v

Why 1000 means 1000 By Pastor Clint Archer I’d like to expand on why there is no reason to take the thousand years of the earthly reign of Christ in Revelation 20 as anything other than a literal millennium. The reason this is important is that if the reign of Christ is a thousand years, then it obviously cannot be the period we are now in, as amillennialists claim, since the church age has already lasted two thousand years, and counting. Reasons that I’ve encountered for why a thousand years in Revelation 20 is not a thousand years: 1. To God a thousand years is like one day and one day is like a thousand years. This appeal to 2 Peter 3:8 is referenced as a possible argument in Louis Berkhof, System-atic Theology, Banner of Truth Trust 1958, reprinted 2000, pp. 714. 2. This is the only text in the Bible saying the kingdom will be a thousand years. This reason is argued by William Hendriksen, More Than Conquerors, Baker 1939, pp. 11-64; and Anthony Hoekema, “Amellennialism,” in Meaning of the Millennium, pp. 156-59. 3. The term “a thousand” refers to any indefinite number. This is closely related to the next reason… 4. The use of a thousand is a symbolic way of describing the perfect amount of time. This quote is worth reading twice…B.B. Warfield: The sacred number seven in combi-nation with the equally sacred number three forms the number of holy perfection, ten, and when this ten is cubed into a thousand the seer has said all he could say to our minds to convey the idea of absolute completeness.” (Benjamin B. Warfield, “The Mil-lennium and the Apocalypse,” in Biblical Doctrines, Oxford University Press 1929, p. 654). Reasons I take the thousand years of Revelation 20 to be literal: 1. The appeal to 2 Peter 3:8 (a thousand years is like a day to God) is a clear exegetical fallacy, called an “illegitimate totality transfer” where the context of one passage is transferred into another passage without regard for the passage being exe-geted (see James Barr, The Semantics of Biblical Languages London: Oxford University Press, 1961, p. 218). In other words, the context of 2 Peter 3:8 (that God’s perception of a literal thousand years is the same as God’s perception of a literal day) has no business

Page 13: Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church - Amazon S3 … · The Savannah Sacred Harp Singers will have their monthly singing in the piano side overflow room on Saturday, March 7, from 2:00

13

undoing the plain meaning of the six cases in Revelation 20 where the literal thousand years is supplied in order to reveal a length of time for humans to anticipate. And in any case, Peter’s point only makes sense if the thousand years has a numeric value of a thousand. What would this argument imply about six days of creation, or three days in the grave? Peter clearly did not intend to communicate that when God reveals a time period we should disregard that revelation completely since God uses numbers differently than humans do. 2. One passage of God-breathed revelation is sufficient. Even though it’s the only passage that mentions the duration of the kingdom, the period is repeated six times in that passage. Also, how many passages revealed that the Christ would be born in Beth-lehem? One. (Micah 5:2). To take God at his word, you only need one place in God’s word where a detail is revealed. 3. There are biblical expressions for innumerable values and indefinite time. For example, “Myriads and myriads and thousands of thousands” (Rev 5:11) and “a great multitude that no one could number” (Rev 7:9) and “A number than cannot be num-bered for multitude” (Gen 16:10) and “more in number than the sand of the seas” (Jer 15:8). Nowhere in Scripture is the number “a thousand” supplied in order to represent an immeasurable amount or period of time. Also, in 20:3, John calls the period in which Satan will be permitted to deceive the nations after his thousand year captivity a “short time” or a “little while.” This is how John reveals indefinite periods of time: with terms for indefinite periods of time. 4. Symbols are always symbolic of something. You can’t say this number is a sym-bol so we have no idea what it means. Symbols represent realities, so the question is: if the thousand years is symbolic of something, then what is it representing? We already dismissed the idea that it could mean a different period of time above, so what else could the referent be? Warfield’s explanation above (perfect 7 + equally perfect 3, to the power of 3 = abso-lute perfection) is laughably arbitrary, and also completely unprecedented anywhere else in the Bible. John’s readers could not possibly be expected to interpret 1,000 years as referring to a period of time longer than 2,000 years that was considered the absolutely perfect amount of time. If one assumes that Scripture was written to be understood (the hermeneutical princi-ple of perspicuity), then the fact that there is no consensus as to what the thousand years refers to—if not a thousand literal years—is a strong argument that John was not in-tending to reveal something cryptic about the duration of the kingdom. Conclusion I am not opposed to interpreting numbers in a figurative way (forgive repentant sin-ners 70×7), but even in apocalyptic genres we hunt for alternative meanings only when the context gives a reason to do so. Remember that of the 254 uses of numbers in Revelation, only two have a context that might demand a figurative interpretation (seven Spirits of God, and the mark of the Beast being 666, the sign of his name). The point is: we need to be consistent in our her-meneutic, for the way we interpret these verses demonstrates our commitment to let Scripture speak for itself instead of imposing our systems upon it. If we never ignore the context in other passages, then we ought not ignore it in apocalyptic genres. Because if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: context is king. v

Missionary of the Week

Cham Chuen Gospelink - Cambodia

We just received a report from our missionary Cham Chuen in Cambodia. Here are excerpts and prayer requests:

Greetings to you! ... Your support reminds me that all of us are called to care for others as God cares for us. We are humble before God for your sacrifices and love in Jesus. My family and I are doing well in this quarter. By the presence of God, our home has been blessed with peace, love and joy. My wife is doing the household and farming on the field. She stays healthy. Our two children Mana and Sarita are growing up and helping us to do the house work. I have good news to tell you. The Lord has provided a new motor-bike to my ministry in September 2019. I held the gift and my mouth could be moved, just bowed down and my heart praised the Lord with thanksgiving and delighted heart. What blessing! Now I have a testi-mony from our prayer for the motorbike. One day my wife prayed with cry because the motorbike that I have used for ministry belongs to my brother-in-law. He let me borrow, (but) he was angry with us. He didn’t want us to use the motor any more. My wife pray with cry asked the Lord to help. She said if we don’t have motor how we can go to soul winning and do the ministry? After prayers she told me, let us humble ourselves and borrow the motor from her brother again. So we did it and continued to use his motorbike for travelling regarding ministry. After three weeks, Pas-tor Sim Mien, director of Gospelink, called me, “You will receive one motorbike from your spon-sor.” While we hear that, my wife was happy that tears rolled. Praise God who replied our prayer in time of need: Faith is the art of having all His blessings in time of need. Sing hallelujah! May God’s hand be upon you and your country. Upcoming ministry goals and plans: 1. I will set plan for soul winning from house to house all the houses in our villages. 2. I will teach children and young people the word of God with general knowledge. 3. I will set program in church worship every Sunday, and more actions regarding to praise His

name. 4. I will set up more activities in our church that more people will attend Christmas 2019. Prayer Requests: 1. Pelase pray for our church at Tacharv village that all members will hunger for God’s words. 2. Please pray for our members that all will shine the light of Jesus to others. 3. Please pray that spiritual huger will overpower physical fear, and that people are no fear of

old traditional of Buddha worship and come to know the name of ord Jesus Christ. 4. Please pray for my sharing and teaching that to be productive, and rooted in hearts, and 5. Please pray for our new believers that each will have 1 new Bible book (we may need 15

Bible books) Thank you so much for your love prayers.
