SIR ALEX FERGUSON
That is all from our Sir Alex Ferguson retirement special, we will back tomorrow with allthe latest news as it happens, including the potential appointment of David Moyes.
2. 2302:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
The Match of the Day boys have their say on Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement on Football
Focus:
Alan Hansen: "David Moyes is the perfect man for Manchester United. I think the fans will
take to him."
Gary Lineker: "I think it makes the transition easier, he's hugely respected within the game
and he'll instantly get the respect of the players."
Mark Lawrenson: "He's not won anything, but I think Manchester United see a lot of Sir
Alex Ferguson in David Moyes."
Alan Shearer: "He's well respected for his coaching and his man-management. For a guy
going into Manchester United who hasn't won a trophy that is the only problem."
3.
GET INVOLVED
Killian Cooney: "Sad day - hope I wake up tomorrow and it's all a bad dream :("
Ruach: "Still coming to terms with the notion that #ManUtd will have a new manager.
Expect a tough transition; huge shoes to fill."
M. Tahir. S "Saddest and the most shocking day in football. Long live the legend SAF."
4. 2245:
Former Scotland managerAndy Roxburghtells the New York Times: "As early as 1980,
he went out in front of the TV cameras, I still have the tape. He had won nothing to that
point but declared that he would be a success in European football. Europe would be the
target.
"This pretty much sums up Alex: to be successful as a manager you have to be successful in
management, it all depends on selection, decision-making, the ability to handle players and a
bit of luck. He has been able to do all of these."

SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Dan Walker is joined by Robbie Savage, Dion Dublin & Steve McClaren for a special
Football Focus looking back on Sir Alex's Ferguson's career. Live on BBC1, online,
mobile, tablet and app.
6. 2229:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Journalist Hugh McIlvanney, who wrote Sir Alex Ferguson's autobiography Managing
My Life: "When we look at his career I think we will all agree it's not the heights he reached
but the sustaining of the trajectory of the heights. It makes him outstanding in any field.
"It's phenomenal, he has high intelligence, dedication of a very special kind, there is a
principle of always producing his best in everything he does and when you have those skills
it makes you great, a word which is sometimes used too often."
7. 2219:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Geoffrey Boycott added: "Alex was brilliant but a new manager coming in has to say I am
not looking to emulate him I am looking to make my own history and do my own thing. If
the manager is looking over his shoulder at Sir Alex he won't succeed, he has to think 'I have
to do it myself'."
8. 2208:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Manchester United fan and former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott on the
pressure of replacing Sir Alex: "If you have got the right man to handle the club then he
will be able to deal with it. Brian Clough said to me he would have crawled on his hands and
knees up the motorway to manage United."
9. 2200:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Former England and Everton midfielder Peter Reid on what it means for Everton: "If
the reports are true it's going to be difficult to replace him because without the big financial
backing he has done a great job. It will be a big miss for Everton and it obviously gives the
board and the chairman a difficult job of replacing him."

10. 2148:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Northern Football Correspondent of the Daily Mail Ian Ladyman on what happens
next: "Players are quite pragmatic, they don't get carried away but some of those players
have only played for one manager. It is an exceptional circumstance so there will be a
wonder of where do we go now but ultimately everyone will move on. "
11. 2139:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Former Everton winger Andy van der Meyde on David Moyes: "My relationship with
him wasn't very good but he is a very good leader. I really enjoyed his training and he can
really push you to the limits."
12. 2130:

Ashli_lou: "Sir Alex is the only guy I've ever known to manage united. It be weird next
season. You are boss!"
Gavin Francis: "Thank you Sir Alex for the years and trophies, you went out at the top, Old
Trafford not going to be the same."
Elena Branch: "I had kind of figured Ferguson would retire but I honestly thought Mourinho
would get the job. Moyes is a shock."

13. 2122:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Former Everton and England midfielder Peter Reid on David Moyes: "I think he is
shrewd, good tactically and he has the chance to go and buy the best players in the world
and be at Manchester United. But I will say Chelsea and Manchester City will have a right
go next season so it will be tough and he will give it a right good go."

Daily Mail reporter Ladyman added: "There's a story that did the rounds that he would
have left the club if they had won the title last season but after that happened he thought he
couldn't do it.
"Why his ghost writer wrote in Sunday's programme that he wasn't going is anyone's guess.
There are different options, either 1) Has something dramatic happened, 2) He didn't mean itand it was his last little joke against the media or 3) He is sticking around because he is
going onto the board."
15. 2106:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Northern Football Correspondent of the Daily Mail Ian Ladyman on the timing of the
decision: "It was always going to come out of left field when it came because of the natureof last time he retired. He got to within about 12 hours this time of keeping it quiet.
"It is a momentous day, I have been up here for 10 years doing this job knowing it would
happen. Everyone will look back on the job Ferguson has done but then they will look
forward to life under David Moyes, which I think is going to happen."
16. 2057:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Owen Coyle added: "He [Moyes] will be nervous tonight, but there will also be huge
excitement. Man United is a huge club so he will be feeling both emotions at the same time.
"I don't think you can judge people on what they have done but on the job that they do. I
think he will go forward as a manager but also take United forward and continue to build on
the infrastructure."
17. 2050:
SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Former Burnley and Bolton manager Owen Coyle on the possible appointment of David
Moyes: "The one thing that strikes me about David Moyes is that he's a winner. It doesn't
surprise me that he is in the frame for probably the best job in world football."

A very tough day for Lancashire who are right up against it against an Essex side who are
started superbly by taking five wickets in the morning session.
The Red Rose struggled to cope with a blistering start from the Essex attack who first
bowled and then battered themselves into a commanding position.
A little resilience from Steve Croft and Gareth Cross, then Kyle Hogg and Cross gave
Lancashire a some hope.
Alistair Cookenjoyed some time in the middle which is perfect preparation for the summer
tests and looks well placed to go on and reach three figures.

"The next Manchester United manager will be a result for putting sanity back in football.

"If you have 499 employees at Manchester United you had 499 mini-mes of him. He's the
last of a kind, he really maintained traditional values and a family atmosphere. He immersed
himself in Manchester United and has taken them to a point of dominance now.
"It's always been a day that Manchester United fans have dreaded but the club will move on
without Sir Alex Ferguson."

"When you watched him last season squaring up to managers, up to Mancini, when you see
him this season bellowing instructions onto the pitch from the touchline to his players, and
at his age then you've just got to sit back and admire that. If you could bottle that it would be
worth an absolute fortune but I suppose that's why he's an absolute genius, because of all ofthat."
