Fellow Lifeguards,
Transcript of Fellow Lifeguards,
Fellow Lifeguards, On behalf of all the members of the Beach Representative Assembly and its Executive Board, I wish to thank everyone involved with making the 2008 Inter-Beach races one of the most memorable in recent history. Your race committee, with the assistance of the Long Island State Parks Supervisors at Jones Beach and Robert Moses, worked tirelessly since last summer to make these events something to be proud of. The competition this year was great, and the participants, those who assisted in set-up, party planning, our sponsors, and our many spectators were all instrumental in making the Races of 2008 something to remember. I ask the members of the Corps to thank and support our many sponsors. Without their financial assistance, our races would not have occurred. I speak for the entire Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps in congratulating our competitors, our planners and our assistants for a job well done. I look forward to seeing all of you at the bigger and better 2009 Races! Tom Donovan President, Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps

Dennis P. Angermaier Memorial Lifeguard Scholarship
Run-Swim-Run Relay
Dennis Angermaier was a lifeguard for 37 years, with 20 of them as the Lt. at RM III. The three things Dennis loved were his family, the beach, and teaching. One of his dreams before passing away from a short battle with cancer in 2001 was to have his wife Jean set up a scholarship fund for worthy lifeguards. Jean has done this and the RM III crew is once again happy to help her in keeping his dream alive.

Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. History
Jones Beach opened to the public in 1929 about the time of the stock market crash and the beginning of the eco-nomic depression that would not end until W.W.2 began about 11 years later. To those who lived in driving dis-tance of the beach, it was a wonderful and inexpensive way to vacation during those economically difficult days of the 1930s. The park was, and still remains a wonderful thing for those living in driving distance. It would be im-possible to attract most of the public to swim there if there was not an excellent lifeguard system in place.
The first lifeguards to work at Jones Beach when it opened were transferred from Hempstead Lake State Park. Needless to say there was a great difference in saving an occasional swimmer in a lake as compared to the situation involved in rescues made in the ocean of the North Atlan-tic. In the 1930s, swimming was at the West Bath House Ocean and pool, the Central Mall, the East Bath House, Field 9, and Zach’s bay.
In the 1944 Mr. Reggie Jones (The beach was not named after Reggie, he would like you to know) joined the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. and we are proud to say he is still with us. is still active today.
The field he works at is affectionately known as Jurassic Park.” by some of the younger lifeguards.
The new hire test until the l960s was a 66 yard swim in the West Bath pool, an ocean swim of about 300 yards and a cross chest carry in the pool. At this time the job was only available to males and you had to weigh at least 150 pounds and stand 5 foot 8 inches tall.
Until the l960s, you worked 8 hours a day 6 days a week. Fields 1,2,6, West End and the East Bath pool were built from the late 1940s on . Robert Moses had one field with about 6 lifeguards who ferried out
there each day until the bridge was completed in the early 1960s.
The Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps was known as the Jones Beach Patrol with a single captain, one lieutenant, one boatswain and two senior men at each facility until
the late 1960s. For a time in the 1950s there were two assistant captains. Therefore, with the long work week and smaller and fewer facilities until the 1960s there were comparatively fewer lifeguards than there were afterwards. This made for a closer knit more personal operation, where practically everyone knew everyone else. This was enhanced by the fact that the main drink-ing and dining establishment that the Jones Beach Guards frequented was the Jones Beach Hotel in Wantagh. They allowed you to run a tab and cash your checks there, so needless to say it was a home away from home and there were many guards to be found there almost every night, and on cloudy and rainy days when we were knocked off with two hours pay.
In the late 1960s, the job qualifications were opened and females could work in calm water positions and about 12 were hired.
In the 1970s, the job qualifications were again expanded and females could then work on the ocean and the height and weight standards were eliminated. Until the 1970s there were enormous sandbars and practically all patrons were non-swimmers. Very big rescues were common-place across the beach fronts and there were two kinds of lifeguards, the swimmers and the land animals. The swimmers were obviously competitive swimmers and the land animals were the football player and wrestler types that would just bull their way through the heavy surf and undertow. There was plenty of work for all!
After the 1971 lifeguard strike, a lot of benefits came our way that we did not have before. Decent uniforms, decent pay, decent hours, and a decent union to see that we were
more protected and better treated than prior to the strike. Throughout the years, the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps has continued to grow in strength and size. We are cur-rently the largest lifeguard agency on the East Coast consisting of 500 lifeguards. Throughout the years we have kept the traditional lifeguard emblem bearing the Jones Beach Lifeguard logo, the seahorse and anchor. Be-ing a Jones Beach Lifeguard isn’t just a summer job, it’s a lifestyle and its being a part of a lifesaving tradition that dates back to 1929.
