Rio de Janeiro: Natural Features of Climate and Topography

The state of Rio de Janeiro is located in the southeastern region.

Climate:– In the flatter area the climate which predominates is

the tropical semi-humid.– Between lowland Fluminense and upland the climate

is tropical.– In the highlands it predominates the tropical climate

with hot, humid summers (rainy) and dry winters.

Topography:– The area of the state of Rio de Janeiro is very varied. The

highest point in the state is the “Pico das Agulhas Negras” with 2,787 meters high.

Rio de Janeiro: Vegetation and Hydrography

Vegetation:– Before the last occupation held in Rio de Janeiro

State for livestock development, basically three variations of vegetation were identified:

on the coast and around, a swamp and the Atlantic Forest .

Going upland, a hillside forest .

Hydrography:– The main river of the state is the Paraíba do Sul that

crosses the country to a great extent. The Paraíba do Sul river goes to the Atlantic Ocean. With the poor planned development and population growth, water has become a preoccupation. So governments and water managers had to care for more sustainable water use.

Environmental Problems: Rains and Tragedies in Rio de Janeiro

• To understand the reasons of these tragedies in Rio de Janeiro, it is necessary to to identify the root of the problem, so here it goes: – (1) The geography of Rio de Janeiro is formed by

naturally steep slopes and typical tropical climate, with high rainfall;

– (2) The removal of the forest that covered the areas, facilitated the water infiltration in the soil;

– (3) The disorganized urbanization that conducted to a risk occupation on slopes, as a result of excessive population growth.
