    Dear Februaryites,

    It was the great mathematician and theologian Blaise Pascal who said something I have remembered since

    my seminary days. Do great things as though they are small because of Jesus Christ. Do small things as

    though they are great because of Jesus Christ. Pascal is saying that because of Jesus Christ ~ the large

    scale events of life owe their true weight to the still larger reality of Jesus Christ. From that perspective, each

    larger matter can be handled incrementally, part by part. Nothing is too big for us to handle because we have

    the greater One, Jesus, always in our lives. The reverse of Pascals quote do small things is a truth that is

    also liberating and adds value to the daily ordinary encounters of life.

    Paul may be the inspiration for Pascal in the verses printed above. The apostle is saying he can take in stride

    both abundance (great things) and want (small things), because Jesus Christ is nearby. This is good news

    for every congregation that is trying to be faithful in the great and small matters that we face routinely.Great things like befriending a big-hearted but struggling church in Mt. Laurel; or engaging the larger denomi-

    nation in a way that is winsome and reflective of our confidence in the Head of the Church; or the `bigness of

    a conversation about re-structuring our committees around the 4 Ds identified in our mission statement.

    These great steps need not cause anxiety ~ because of Jesus Christ. And of course there are 100s of

    smaller things we are trying to do as if they were great: like the way we treat one another in this community of

    faith called FPC; or in the budget and financial faithfulness we are called to ~ small weekly investments in the

    kingdom that carry great consequence; or how about the faithful teaching of our children and adults in matters

    of faith; and finally the doing of the daily invitation to `hold tight to the heavenly Father ~ climb into His `lap ~

    making time for prayer.

    When you and I face great and small things in the larger reality of Jesus, Lord of all ~ all things shift. The big

    things shrink and the things we think are small become more important. The way we treat a spouse, a child, a

    parent, a teacher, colleagues at work, the neighbor, the community of faith ~ all of these things find their right

    place and balance in our lives. And best of all You can do all things in Him who strengthens you. Live in the

    confidence of Jesus presence ~ carry the name of Jesus boldly ~ love in the generous freedom that alone

    comes in Jesus. Do this and one more thing dont miss the renewal weekendFebruary 10th-12th! See

    From Our Executive Pastor

    Dear Friends and Fellow Followers of Jesus,

    Prayer changes things, people say. It also changes us. The latter goal is the more imperative. The primarypurpose of prayer is to bring us into such a life of communion with the Father that, by the power of the Spirit,

    we are increasingly conformed to the image of the Son.

    This month we embark on a great prayer-adventure with our Lord for which weve been laying the ground-work for several weeks andeven months in planning, in preparing materials, by teaching on prayer and fasting in January and with a sermon series on theLords Prayer. Like any adventure, it will change usdrawing us closer to our God, making us more like Jesus, and opening our eyesto the Spirits working in powerful ways.

    So, now I am inviting you to step into three great movements of the prayer adventure ahead of us.

    The first movement is the Renewal Weekend on thePrayer Filled Lifewith our guest Paul Miller and his team from SeeJesus Minis-tries in Philadelphia. Its not a weekend for victorious Christians but for those of us who ask, How do I focus when Im distractedwith so much to do? How do I pray longer than five minutes? How do I ask God when Ive tried it before and it doesnt work? Forthree days, February 10-12, well honestly confront our frustrations while looking at Jesus simple and powerful teachings on prayer.And well not just talk about prayerwell take time to pray, to make real what we learn.

    The second movement comes right on the heels of the first. Its a Week for Prayer and Fastingfrom Monday, February 13 to Sun-day, February 19 when well get into the powerful work of actually praying together as a church. Well gather three times each day (at7 AM, Noon and 7 PM) in the church sanctuary to pray; and share a fourth occasion we can each do on our own at home before goingto sleep at night. Using a daily prayer book I compiled especially for this week, well pray thematically so that we start on Monday withPrayers of Thanks-giving; then,Tuesday is given to Prayers of Confession. On each of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday well pray forthe World, our Nation and the Church in succession. Finally, well pray forIndividuals on Saturday, breaking the fast and concludingour week of prayer with Worship and Communion on Sunday, Feb. 19. Each prayer session will be led by one of the pastors, staffor an elder.

    Finally, this years Lenten Small Groupswill be in weekly fellowship, reflect on Scripture and study a book by Richard J. Foster called

    Prayer: Finding the Hearts True Home starting the week of February 19 when Lent begins. In small groups, meeting in various loca-tions at a variety of times sure to fit just anyones schedule, well discuss and experience 18 different ways we Christians can meet ourLord in prayer. So, if you havent sign-up yet for a group, I encourage you to do it right away since over the past several years thesesmall groups have grown in popularity and significance for us as a church.

    My friend: I urge you not to be left on the sidelines of this great adventure. Participate in all three of the movements of the venturewhen well meet God in wonderful waysor take part in as many as you possibly can.

    What do I expect to happen? I wish I knew but if I knew, then it wouldnt be Gods marvelous act but my own little agenda and goals.If theres one thing we can count onits that God always wants to do more than we can imagineif only well let Him; hence, theprayer of Paul in Ephesians 3:14-21

    14For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16I pray thatout of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwellin your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all theLords people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpassesknowledgethat you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

    20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at workwithin us,21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.(Italics minerhh)

    Jesus (1 Thessaloni ans 5:16-18).

    For a church to set aside its usual activities to pray is unusual in our age of action, activity and full-plates. However, in doingso we make an essential confession of faiththat what we do depends not on our efforts but on Gods grace, loveand fai thfulness. It is an en-couragement to live out the apostolic admonition to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

    Commenting on the ancient practice of daily prayer (morning, noon and evening) one author says that, among the important lessohes learned from daily prayer is that, by Gods grace, we have all the time in the world to do thework of Christs kingdom. Wepause morning, noon, and evening as a confession that our work depends not on our efforts but on thefaithfulness of God who halready redeemed the whole creation.

At such times we must learn to become comfortable with the mystery."

    Foster shows us how prayer can move us inward into personal transformation, upward toward intimacy with God, and outward tminister to others. He leads us beyond questions to a deeper understanding and practice of prayer, bringing us closer to God, tourselves, and to our community.

    From Our Associate Pastor for Families

    For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1

    Dear Friends:

    Currently we are in winter (even though some days are in the 50s), but I long for summer and the warmth. In the middle of

    the summer, I long for the beauty of the snow. I love the different seasons. It can be a challenge in the midst of the season to enjoy it,

    but I love the various seasons.

    The rhythm of the seasons is an important part of life. While some people are looking forward to Super Bowl, others are look-

    ing forward to baseball seasons or another football season all together. Some people have a season in New Jersey and travel southfor a winter season in warmer weather. For some people, the seasons follow the rhythm of a school calendar. Even life has its sea-

    sons of childhood, youth, adulthood and old age.

    Each season is unique; each season has a purpose; and each season is beautiful. Each season has something to teach us if

    we take time to listen and learn.

    The church year is marked by seasons. The seasons of the church year remind us that there is a rhythm to our spiritual

    life. We kick off the church year with Advent and a time of waiting for Christmas and the birth of our Lord. On February 22nd, we willbegin the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday. We will have a Hunger Soup Supper sponsored by the Presbyterian Women followed

    by a worship service.

    If you go to a calendar and count starting with Ash Wednesday and ending with Easter, you will count 46 days. Why?Because the forty days of Lent are fast days in the broad sense, time of discipline, and self-restraint. But . the Lords Day is ever a

    feast within the church. (Calendar by Laurence Hull Stookey page 79) The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the be-

    liever. On Easter, early Christians made their profession of faith. Throughout a 40 day period, early Christians prayed, reflected, re-

    pented, denied oneself worldly enjoyment to help them prepare. In moments of sacrifice, one can show acts of compassion and one

    can show generosity.

    The English word Lent is derived from the Germanic root for long because Lent occurs in spring when the days lengthen.

    These days are given to us as a time of reflecting on God and Gods purposes for our lives. It is a time to take stock of our faith and

    the way we live our lives. By changing our habits, taking a break from some of our usual activities, and altering the rhythm of our day,we open the door to Gods work in us.

    This is not a holiday that Hallmark will tell you how to enjoy and celebrate. So let me give you some suggestions so that it

    may be a meaningful season.

    + Join a Lenten group. These groups will help you get to know other members of the church and help deepen your prayer life as

    we explore Richard Fosters book.

    + Show generosity and compassion by adding an act of kindness to your day. Maybe volunteer for an organizing once a week

    during Lent, or even every day adding one small act that would change the day of another person.

    + Remove a particular bad habit, or maybe a guilty pleasure from your daily routine to free you to engage in some activity that

    reflects Gods purpose in your life.+ Read scripture and hear God speak to you

    What a difference it will make if we think of Lent as forty days of giving, serving, praying, scripture reading and sacrificing. What

    we do these forty days may become a new pattern for the rest of our lives.

    There is a Christmas carol that starts of with:

    In the bleak mid-winter, frosty wind may moan

    The darkness and isolation of winter sends many people off towarmer climates to escape the cold that sends a chill through our

    spirits. Coping with sadness and difficulty becomes more of a

    challenge. There are so many passages in the Bible that address

    those kinds of feelings (that can devastate us) with one word that

    occurs many timesCOMFORT.

    One of the earliest prophesies about the coming Messiah prom-

    ises comfort: Comfort, O comfort My people, says your God.

    At the end of his life, Jesus promised to send a Helper which in

    the original Greek means called alongside to help.

    There is a new class that has just started to train 3 additional

    Stephen Ministers who have accepted the call from the Lord to

    become a helper, a comforter for those who struggle with lifes

    difficulties. Stephen Ministers just pass Gods comfort along as

    they themselves have been comforted. We invite you to seek the

    help of this ministry if the cold, bleak mid-winter is highlighting

    your current adversity.

    Missions

    Missionwares is celebrating 20 years of ongoing outreach to artisans indeveloping countries this year! Over this time, the shop has traveled to numerouschurches throughout our Presbytery, hosted 5 consecutive International Marketplace Festvals (1995-1999) and moved from temporary homes to a permanent location where it is

    now settled in the Commons Lobby. Through the course of this continual presence Missionwares has experienced the expanding commitment of the two primary sources of handcrafts, SERRV and Ten Thousand Villages in their ministry to developing world artisansFor example, Ten Thousand Villages has planted more than 80 non profit stores throughout the country, in places like Philadelphia, Princeton, King of Prussia Mall, Boston, Charlotte, etc. In addition, over 300 Alliance Shops carry TTV products to promote fair trade intheir communities. Both organizations have interactive web sites that are updated regularlythat feature handcrafts and artisan stories.

    Beginning in February and throughout spring, you are invited to enjoy 20% anniversarysavings on all handcrafts at Missionwares. Think fair trade this Valentines Day!

    March 3rd ~ Benefit Evening ~ Dinner & Silent Auction

    Mission travelers, Deacons and others from throughout the Church are participating in this years Benefit Evening. The evening

    includes a delicious home made spaghetti dinner in Fellowship Hall, while the silent auction is featured in the Commons. For the

    past 2 decades, the dinner has been one of the best attended activities held at the church because its a time for friends and familiesto gather. The Silent Auction adds an element of fun and excitement to the evening by providing an extensive variety of gifts,

    services, themed baskets, sports equipment, lessons, personal services, art, and home accessories to winning bidders. Save March

    3rd on your calendarto be a part of this enjoyable evening that supports mission teams and the Deacons. Dinner tickets will be

    available in the Church Office and at Missionwares.

    Stepping Stones

    Sharing the News from our Preschool

    Kourtney and her husband Fausto, arrived in Honduras following theirwedding in Moorestown on Dec. 10, (and family visit to Mexico through the endof the year!) Kourtney has resumed her responsibilities as a program directorwhere overall accomplishments in 2011 include growth, change and transforma-tion. Key elements related to the progress of UrbanPromise Honduras in theregion included pilot programs in multiple neighborhoods all with positive feed-

    back. Final confirmation of a new site, Camp Agape, in San Pedrito Abajo wasreceived through the development and nurturing relationship with Pastor Nahunfrom the local church. This Pastor has committed to building new rooms at hischurch specifically for Camp Agape. The mission team that is forming to journeyto Honduras in April will have the opportunity to visit this new camp site andhopefully assist in after school activities!

    Mission update from Glad Tidings IndiaFor the past two years FPC has supported a Village Literacy Project in Orissa,India. You may recall that Orissa is where horrific Christian persecution oc-curred during 2007 and 2008, and continues to this day through failed courtsand a blind justice system. The village we support is in the epicenter of the per-secution in Khandamal District. Literacy projects seek to transform an entirevillage through teaching literacy, awareness of social issues, spiritual growthand economic development. The highlights reported below may seem veryelementary, but they are by no means incidental or insignificant:

    242 (out of 250) completed classes which run for 2 hours/night,

    5 nights per week 10 months per year 97% completion rate

    25 children of the literacy learners started attending school

    120 are taking baths and wearing clean clothes

    90 women have started to generate income

    Overall, average daily income increased 100%

    100 regularly read their Bible

    15 have stopped child marriages

    25 have stopped dowry

    110 have begun hygienic preparation of food

    Of great significance are the following: 75 have accepted Christ as their personal savior35 have been baptized

    75 are attending Church

    8 witnessing prayer cells have formed

    The number of people accepting Christ is significant as this will lay the founda-tion for establishing new churches in the area. Significant also is the Baptismfigure. Because Baptism occurs in a public manner, it opens the door for perse-cution, but these new believers are committed in their faith!

    OUR DEEPEST APPRECIATION

    Every year we are amazed at the number of toys member of o

    congregation give to make Christmas special for children who

    would go without. All of the gifts go to the Food Shelf in Camd

    where they are distributed to families in great need.To each peson who helped make this possible, thank you. Also a spec

    thanks to the NJ Society of Pennsylvanians who bring toys to

    Two couples gave four beautiful bicycles, the person who came

    in August with new book, puzzles and games and also to the

    family that shops all year at toy sales and fills our hallway withbags and bags of toys.

    All of the donations brought our collection to over 500 toys

    Presbyterian Women95th Annual

    The new year is upon usafter a well attended and much enjoyed

    Christmas Dinner and a joint circle meeting in January, we will con-

    tinue with our study of the Beatitudes in February. This month we

    seek to better understand Jesus sixth Beatitude, Blessed are the

    pure in heart, for they shall see God Matthew 5:8. Our six circles

    meet at various times during each month.

    Annual Rummage Sale by Presbyterian Women

    No doubt you are starting to see notices about the Rummage Sale

    as Presbyterian Women are making preparations for our 95th an-

    nual event. Perhaps you are less aware of the multiple blessings

    that result from all this energetic sorting, selling and celebrating:we do celebrate the resultant funds that support fourteen ministries

    and service organizations, all but one in this region. Our funds go

    directly to groups caring for the least of these in Moorestown,

    Pemberton, Camden and other areas. Some groups receive sup-

    port for their work with the elderly, the homeless, children at risk

    OR women trapped in slavery and sex trafficking. Our vision is

    broad and our outreach ever wider. We need and appreciate your

    involvement for the crazy and wonderful Rummage Sale event.
