Building on the success of last year’s Grandparents’ Day , we extended our celebration this year to include tea and coffee served after our assembly to

give grandparents a well deserved break! We understand

and value the role of grandparents in the lives of our

pupils today and wanted to celebrate this.

Basketball News There have been a lot of games during February for all the basketball

teams. The first was against Queens Girls U-10s. The school decided to bring a team of girls from p.4, p.5 and p.6. For the p4 girls and p5 girls

this was their first competitive basketball match and they performed brilliantly. The team won a hard fought game 21-20 and all the girls

played fantastically. Mollie Clinton in p.4 deserves a special mention as it was her first game and she scored what turned out to be a crucial basket.

Next up it was the boys turn, again U-10s. This time we hosted Queens down at Shaftsbury Recreational Centre. Most of the p6 boys who played

in the match had represented the school before and as the game progressed the experience of the older boys helped the team. Saint Malachy’s won by a comfortable margin in the end, 28-16. The team performed to a very high standard but a special mention goes out to

Caoimhin Pollock in p.6 whose defence was exceptional and a big factor in the win.

Lastly it was the p.7 boys and girls team. Again we were up at Queens. The girls played a mixture of their U-11 boys and girls while the boys played their U-12 team. Our girls took a while to get into their stride and perhaps showed the boys they were playing a bit too much respect. However as the game progressed they came into their own and won the match 22-16. Well done to Abigail Burnett in p.6 who got MVP (Most Valuable Player) for her performance. The boys did not start the game well and were down 12-2 at half time against a strong Queens’s team.

After a few ‘stern words’ from Mr. White they soon found their form and made a fantastic comeback to win the game 24-18. A special mention to Jordan McGrattan for his defensive performance and Jack Flynn who top

scored with 12 points and won the MVP award. Both boys are in p.6.

So the final scored was Saint Malachy’s 4- Queens 0!!! Well done to all involved!

Health Education

Retreats Primary Sevens enjoyed a Retreat in the Parish Centre on 31st January with Fr McGinnity and Sr Marie. This was good preparation for Confirmation. A retreat was also held for P7 parents in the Parochial House on 5th February.

Many classes celebrated Chinese New Year in different ways. Primary 3s made their own glittery snakes to celebrate the

‘Year of the Snake’ and they are on display outside their classroom. The Nursery children tasted noodles and

crackers, had dragon making and ribbon dancing and a treasure hunt for lucky

money. Thomas in P6 and brother Raymond in P3 visited their home in Hong Kong and brought their classmates back

little red envelopes with treasure in them!

Medical students from Queens University are teaching Primary Sevens every

Tuesday this term. The class is also receiving education on Drug and Alcohol awareness every Monday from FASA (Forum for action on substance abuse)

which is a community based organisation.

We made chocolate, heart shaped pancakes and they were yummy! We made lovely biscuits for Valentine’s Day with pink icing on them. When it was snowing we made snowmen and snowballs and had great fun playing with them but we got very cold hands!

All classes had a Religion Inspection on 23rd of January. The Diocesan advisors were very pleased indeed

with the teaching and learning going on in our school.
