I really love winter as it has always been the time of year that I feel I can commit more time to my quilting projects, particularly when it is snowing outside. I spent much of my "quilting time" in January organizing my projects, rediscovering fabric and making some decisions on what I will work on and what I need to let go of. I find I am focusing on different types of projects than in the past; small items like bags and organizers, some EPP, and a few pieced quilts. Of course, UFOs are always on that list and my big applique quilt that has been a labor of love for a few years now is getting some dedicated time each week so I can get it off to the quilter! I am excited about our opportunities as a guild this year. With positive thoughts to restrictions on socializing lifting, we are beginning to plan for our annual quilt show. A quilt show is a community effort and requires the support from many many people. We will all have opportunities to make this one a success, from making items for the boutique, to coordination and support on the ground the day of the show. I hope everyone is thinking how they can contribute to this event. If you are excited to participate and want to see how you can help, please reach out to Patti Stewart, Jill Monley, or Pat Beyer - our committee who is organizing the show. Sisters Quilt Show is also still planning for their show to happen. So, fingers crossed, that by summer, we will all be able to go and participate in these events that show how strong our quilting community is in central Oregon. I hope January has been kind to you all and wishing you all wonderful quilting thoughts and productive time on your projects. Cheers, Donna Membership Committee Judy Woodfill, Catherine Anderson, Carol Luther, Kathe Sabine, Kathleen Garton and Sonia Jager "You can still pay your 2021 Dues of $30 by check payable to MBQG and mailing to me. Welcome to 2021! Please let me know if there is anyone in the guild that could use a note from the Guild as they are healing from loss, injury or any other way we might reach out. Especially during this time when we cannot meet in person, I want to be sure we keep in touch with any members that may appreciate a “thinking of you” note or “hope you’re healing” note. If you know of any members that might enjoy a “snail mail” note, please contact the Sunshine Committee or any officer and pass on your information. 3 cards were sent out in January, all with healing thoughts. Bev H., Gwen B. and Ruth O. We hope you’re doing better each day.

Community Quilts Joyce Andrew, Lizbeth Cattle, Jane Davis, Diana Lawlis 2020 REPORT: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to all of the Community Quilters who made quilts for the Bend community in 2020! We donated a total of 390 quilts this year for a total value of $37,075 (we track the value for tax purposes). We donated these totals to each of our charities: Cascade Youth

52 quilts; KIDS Center 49 quilts; Partners In Care 90 quilts plus 55 wheelchair quilts; Ronald McDonald House 53 quilts; Saving Grace none this year; J Bar J Ranch 16 quilts; Bend High Teen Parents 8 quilts; Dawn’s House 40 quilts; Nativity Lutheran 3 quilts; Pregnancy Resource Center and raffles 22 quilts, St. Charles Hospice Prineville 1 quilt; and Big Brothers & Big Sisters 1 quilt. Great work, Everyone! If you are making more community quilts, the Bend community still needs warmth and comfort in this difficult time! Babies, children, teens and adult quilts will be needed for our next distribution in April. Partners In Care is still asking for wheelchair quilts (30x30” to 40x40”), and we expect to run short of men and teen boy quilts. If you need supplies or want to drop off a quilt, please call or text Diana Lawlis at 253-686-1546 for address and time. She lives near Mt View High School in NE Bend, and quilts can be left on her porch. LABELS: Please note that quilts need to have the paper label with your name, size, etc. Labels can be printed from the Mt. Bachelor Quilters Guild website (no password required). Look under “Downloadable Forms”. Also note that quilts need to have a MBQG fabric label sewn onto the back. You can get these from Diana—come by her house or call her (253-686-1546) and she will mail to you. WEEKLY MEETINGS: Weekly meetings are postponed for now, but we hope to be able to get back together on Wednesdays this year sometime! We have all missed the fun, sewing and socializing that our weekly meetings bring to us. When our weekly meetings resume at the church, all guild members and non-members are welcome to join us every Wednesday for a fun day of sewing. Bring a lunch! Once your top is finished, we provide batting and backing to complete your project for donation to our community charities. Wednesday meetings will be at Nativity Lutheran Church from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM at 60850 Brosterhous Rd.

Guild Library MaryElla Strelchun

We have received several Jennifer Chiaverini’s Elm Creek Quilts novels from Marie Phillis, so if you are tired of stitching check out one of our novels to read by a warm fire. Mary Ratcliffe donated Quilt Mania and Primitive Quilts magazines and several new books. Before Sandy Swanland moved to Vancouver, WA she gave a stack of her quilting books to our library also. With the sheltering there has been little usage of our vast book collection. You can review the library on our web site and I welcome you to come in person to peruse. Email ([email protected]) or call me (541-639-8441) to discuss the availability of specific resources. We live near the outlet stores so you could drop off your books or ask me to leave what you wish to check out on our outside foyer. 2021 Quilt Challenge Jill Monley Challenge Quilt 2021: Love Your Garage!!! This is the theme of the 2021 MBQG challenge. Have some fun with it! Paper piece some tools, or your favorite lawn mower! Show off your garage’s organization …. Bicycles hung from the ceiling……or tools neatly lined up on the wall……….or that peg-board filled with treasures! Or, maybe you want to focus on just one tool…perhaps a screwdriver………or a hammer. Let your imagination run wild. There are no size limitations, though, if you want to enter your quilt in the SOQ Show for 2022, it needs to be a minimum of 40”X40”. Quilts should be completed by early June. Remember, they are a secret…….until the July MBQG meeting when they will be revealed to all members. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Shannon W or Jill M.

2021 Quilt Retreat Sandy Combs, Kay Muraoka It is disappointing that we will not be able to hold our 2021 retreat in the spring of this year as planned. We look forward to sewing with our Mount Bachelor Quilt Guild Friends in the future. Thanks, Kay Muraoka

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Martha Sanders Congratulations - the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is pleased to accept your application as a special exhibit, The Colors of Nature, for our 46th annual show, July 10, 2021,. We are so excited to be able to share your quilts with all our guests! At this time, we are moving forward with the intention of an in-person show this July. However, this is contingent on the state & local government and health officials granting permission to hold large events. If we are unable to obtain the proper permits, we will notify you and chat about our virtual-only plans (similar to 2020). Because we may have to consider this as a possibility, we would encourage your quilters to have their quilts completed by early May. This allows more flexibility in filming your exhibits for producing a virtual-only show if that is what is required for this year. Of course, our fingers are crossed that all is going to be back to normal this year - stay tuned... Online Registration: February 17 – May 21, 2021 These instructions are for all special exhibits. Follow these steps to register your special exhibit quilts Follow this link to our registration page: www.soqs.org

1. Click on the Account Login button in the upper right corner

2. Quilters will need to create an account in the new SOQS Database unless they had already registered in 2020.

3. Click and read through the Entry Guidelines

http://mtbachelorquiltersguild.typepad.com February 2021 Page 5

4. Click to Pay Registration Here 5. Click Register Quilts Here 6. Choose the Special Category Entry button 7. In the list of Special Exhibit names, choose

the category name of your exhibit 8. Fill in all required fields on the form. The

Quilt Story is a favorite part of our quilt show visitors, so we ask that you write 3 to 4 sentences of how or why this quilt was created.

9. Quilts may be listed for sale. All quilters must submit a photo of each sale quilt submitted (photos can be of the finished top prior to quilting). Additionally, quilters are encouraged to submit a photo of any registered quilts for the SOQS 2021 Quilt database to help the event office with quilt management.

Virtual Show & Tell Kristin Shields, e-MBQG coordinator While we are all going through this difficult social distancing time, I would like to offer a little bit of fun and a way for us to keep in touch. We will do a virtual show and tell on the blog. The frequency of posting will depend on how many submissions I get. I anticipate posting once a week perhaps, but I really don’t know how many submissions I’ll get. If you’d like to participate please send a photo of your current project (in progress or finished). Please state how you would like your name to be posted (full name or first name with last initial), and just one sentence of explanation if needed. Photography tips: Try to take your photo with your camera perpendicular to the quilt (i.e.- put the quilt on a design wall, or have someone hold it up). If you lay it on the floor, do your best to get the camera centered over it. The sides of the quilt will be parallel to the sides of the photo. I will not have time to edit the photos, so I would prefer that you do any editing

yourself. A phone photo is fine, just be sure to take your photo in natural light and get close enough to your project so that you don’t need to crop the photo too much. We want the resolution to be as high as possible. Send your photo to me with largest size possible. I was thinking it would be fun to see people’s sewing rooms in whole or just a favorite part, so that can be added to the show & tell of quilts. If you want to keep up with the posts from your guild friends, be sure you are signed up to receive the blog posts by email. To do this, see the right-side bar for the subscribe by email button. IMPORTANT: Only send these submissions to the blog email address:[email protected].

Programs Suzanne Martin & Patti Stewart Coming up on February 8, 2021 we will enjoy a presentation by Amy Friend titled “All Things Petal and Stem”. Because of Zoom, we are able to connect with speakers from all across the country, and Amy will be joining us from Massachusetts! She is a pattern designer and author, and appears to lean in the “modern” quilting direction. Check out her website, duringquiettime.com. For our March 8 meeting, we are delighted to host the Central Oregon Modern Quilt Guild. Who doesn’t want to learn a bit more about the modern movement in quilting, as well as enjoy some amazing show-and-tell?!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Boutique Kay Gutierrez, Eileen Heber This year of COVID has certainly changed our lives, and many of us are spending more time at home creating. Aren’t we fortunate to have a hobby that we can easily pursue from our homes? If you haven’t already, you may want to start thinking about creating things for the guild to sell at our boutique in August. Our traditional boutique sew day has been restructured because of our changing times. Starting Feb 10th, there will be a monthly zoom Boutique Sew Day on the second Wednesday of the month from 1-4. All are welcome to attend, for all or part of the meeting. You may work on a project of your choice, but we will also have ideas to share. Because new and unique items are the ones that sell the best, we will be presenting directions for projects you might want to work on during that time. In February we will be showing how to make a cute reversible bandana that attaches to a dog’s collar (a great way to use up all those holiday fabric scraps) and a clever origami (Azuma Bukuro) market tote. Directions for these items will be available before the 10th so you can get together the necessary supplies. They will be posted on the Boutique page of the guild website and available to pick up at Eileen or Kay’s homes. Since we aren’t meeting in person, we have an easy way for you to turn in your awesome, donation items. Both Eileen and Kay will have tubs on their front porches that are labeled Mt Bachelor Quilt Guild. Just place your items in the tub, and we will check them each day at 5. If you need to drop off after 5, just call or text. If walking up to the porch is an issue for you because of ice or snow, just call and we will meet you at your car. Our information is on the guild roster. Instructions for new craft projects will be available to pick up from these same tubs. We are always

looking for new ideas, so if you have one to share, just drop it off there. We know many of you won’t be able to join us at our Boutique Sew Day and/or may prefer to sew on your own. These items have been big sellers in the past: crochet dishcloths, potholders, covered composition books, snap bags, large totes, armchair pincushion sewing caddies, and pincushion/thread catchers. Please don’t plan to make microwave bowl caddies, since we have lots of them to sell. There are many ideas on the Boutique page of the guild website to refer to. And if you have a new and creative idea, please let us know and we will share it with the other members. We hope you and your family are safe, well, and being COVID careful. Happy Sewing!

Novel Idea Deschutes Public Library Novel Idea Quilts Martha Sanders

The library has decided to go ahead with some of their planned activities surrounding the Novel Idea book and given social distancing will proceed as appropriate. They would like to feature an online quilt show featuring the quilts inspired by this year’s books – The Other Americans by Lalami and Front Desk by Yang. What is special about this year is that the second title, Front Desk, is a middle grade young reader book. Participation from young quilters is encouraged and fits well with our guild community outreach.

There is no size requirement for this show, but if you may wish to enter it in another show, keep in mind that those shows may have requirements. What would be required is a photo of your quilt – full view and a close up of some detail. You can take it with your cell phone, no professional photos needed. The virtual show includes some of the legend of your quilt, similar to what you’ve done in the past for Novel Idea and for quilts shown at QuiltWorks. There will be a series of zoom meetings, our next meeting is 1/30 at 10 AM. Links will follow in a special email. Please contact Martha at [email protected] for more information or to let her know you will participate. If you haven’t seen last year’s virtual show, here is the link. It has been viewed over 900 times! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZRNOB_AqsU&feature=youtu.be

Garden Quilt Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts and Agriculture (PMRCAA), in Sisters, Oregon is seeking proposals for a signature garden space that is inspired by a

quilt design. Proposals are sought from local Central Oregon quilt makers, artists and/or designers experienced with quilt patterns. Proposals for the 2021 growing season are due February 12th and selection will be made by February 28th. The garden, located at Pine Meadow Ranch, will be a 20' x 20' bed with 'quilt-blocks' no smaller than 12" to be designed out of plants and flowers. Planting for this growing season will begin in early March. Proposals that include time towards implementation of the garden are encouraged. Implementation will be led by the PMRCAA's Garden Manager. While the Garden Bed Quilt program will be a permanent asset at PMRCAA, the plantings within the bed will be changed annually for new artists. Every year, signage with the title and designers name will be placed near the bed - along with other celebratory and programming activities planned. Garden Bed Quilt press will highlight the chosen designer every year. A stipend of $250 will also be awarded to the finalist. Stitchin’ Post 311 W. Cascade, Sisters 541-549-6061 www.stitchinpost.com

Hello everyone,

Hasn’t it been nice having some sunshiny days this month! I have been in production mode, quilting like crazy. It feels good to begin some new projects. I am working on a couple that will be for quilt show, hopefully. The girls finished up inventory the first week of the month, then here came all this new fabric that we had been expecting in November and December. That seems to be the norm these days. Suppliers tell us a delivery date and it is a month or two late.

I hope you are keeping up with our weekly newsletters. The team has outdone themselves with all of the creative content. For those of you signed up for Quilter’s Affair, we are introducing instructors and featuring product they have available on a weekly basis. It really helps in getting to know these instructors a bit better.

We are all ready and waiting for the classroom to open, and Diane has the schedule all ready to roll out the minute we can open up. There are lots of great classes and fun projects coming your way. Val asked me to fill the classroom walls with quilts, so I brought in twelve samplers that I created, each with its own unique setting. I haven’t had them out for a really long time, so I enjoyed visiting them again. When you make your spring trip to the store, be sure you go into the classroom. We also have an exhibit up of quilts made by the officers of the East of the Cascades guild here in Sisters. It is amazing to see the variety of the quilts on display. See you soon! Val and Jean
