We are also flooded with exciting new products and brands as we begin the new year and this issue truly showcases the innovation of our brands, new products and creative artists. Enjoy.

If you haven’t seen Yoda, scantily clad body-builders and four of the hair industries leading Lads all under the one roof, then you haven’t experienced a night with evo’s Lads.

In their second appearance of the year, evo’s Lads this time entertained a sell-out crowd at Melbourne’s Gas Works theatre. Two hundred stylists and ‘dressers from across Victoria came together for one of the stand-out educational events of the year. A night based on education and inspiration, The Lads is the perfect platform for the industry to come together to celebrate the craft, each other, and of course, the world of evo and fabuloso pro. The night saw the original Lads Grant Norton and Pete Koziell join forces with our favourite caped-crusader, Leonard Newton and the original gangster Paul Dare. Four great talents with one goal – to inspire. Stepping away from the typical education platform, leading Lad Grant invited the artists to focus on the looks and styles they wanted to portray; to express their vision and style in their own way, not just rehash the skills and techniques you’d expect to see.

“With The Lads concept we really just wanted to work with individual people, so when the guys rocked up and said ‘what kind of work are we doing, what do you want to see?’ I really wanted to put the emphasis back on the individual artist. Sometimes I think we end up following trends and conforming to different boxes and expectations, so it’s nice to see artists creating their own work” – Grant Norton

With the mission for the night firmly embedded in The Lads’ minds, they took to the stage, wowing the audience with what they could do with a few evo products, scissors and some fab pro. The show kicked off with an editorial showcase from Grant and Rinaldo prodigy, Tiffany Decaux, doing things with toothpicks we never thought possible. During this portion the models donned some of the most intricate and diverse looks of 2014 in beautiful sass & bide attire.

The cut and colour component of the night took the audience on a trip down memory lane with looks inspired by legend Deborah Harry, the return of the mullet and the not so classic, clipper fade. Pete and Leonard awed the audience with their colour work using fabuloso pro, while short hair advocate Grant, produced a ladies crop that would have even those with the longest of hair considering the chop. Topped off with Paul, doing as he does best; cutting like a master.

An amazing night had by all, The Lads once again succeeded in their mission adding that extra special evo touch we all love. Where else could you win a meat tray, hang out with Yoda, and learn from the industry’s best? Not bad for a Monday night. The Lads will be back in full force in 2015. Visit haircareaust.com/education for more information and to book your tickets.

IF CREATING YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION IS ON YOUR TO-DO LIST FOR 2015, THEN LOOK NO FURTHER...

The inspirational team from Chumba have joined forces with Haircare Australia to bring an educational photographic experience unlike any other. Not your average photography course, this educational workshop offers you the chance to have your finished work published across the international hair landscape, not bad for three days work.

The sell-out workshop in August 2014 gave 10 lucky stylists the chance to work

with Carl Keeley and some of the most highly regarded and experienced names in the industry; make-up artist, Paul Blanch; Leanne Cutler of Hair Shots; re-toucher, Peter Orlik; and Alex Newman of Chumba - all helping to drive the creativity and harness the talent amongst the diverse group.

“We had a mixed bag of participants, from salon owners to the newly qualified. Most had dabbled in a shoot or two but none had yet experienced the success of creating an image that reflected their own abilities to their best. All were nervous at the start but full of confidence by the end of shoot day. I was so proud of their learning journey and of the work they created” – Carl Keeley.

Day one of the three day workshop is all about unwrapping the mystery surrounding photography, uncovering the basics, setting goals, research, planning and navigating the whole photographic process. The second day sees the course change from the basics, to getting a solid grip on the most important thing when developing a collection; the vision. From drawing on this inspiration to creating the brief, right the way through to getting the right models, this workshop touches on it all.

The workshop finishes with a photo-shoot, where you are given the chance to implement every aspect of your new-found knowledge. With the assistance of the mentors you will be able to master on-set hair, shot selection and retouching, hopefully resulting in international editorial coverage. Those lucky enough to be part of last years Create Your Collection workshop saw their collection published in Highlights magazine in an impressive 25 countries.

The collection, named Andor was inspired by the concept of stripping away excess visual noise through a monochromatic palette, similarly muting the gender bias to one of androgyny. The students were asked to focus on strong shapes and silhouettes to create impactful images. The collections have been published in the following countries; Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa and in Estetica in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Costa Rica, Venzuela, Canada, France, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa and Ukraine.; an incredible achievement

Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of the 2015 workshop, spaces are limited. Visit haircareaust.com to book your place.

How do you juggle the creative and business side of things? I love exploring my imagination and expressing my creativity, and that is one of the reasons I started hairdressing. I try to inject creativity into every aspect of my work and encourage my team to do the same. It has been critical for me to hire people who are brilliant ‘on the desk’; you can’t do everything, so it's important that my team includes people who are creative at running a business so the business can excel.

What is your favourite aspect about your job? Travel. And the amazing opportunities that I have as a result of building relationships with my celebrity clients and working with magazines. I love that things are constantly changing too; no two days are ever the same and it can be so exciting. I think perhaps that is what I love the most.

What have been some of your career highlights? Thinking back I realise how lucky I have been; opportunities like working on global commercials for Armani with Cate Blanchett or travelling in private jets with Toni Colette, Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz are definitely up there! I have formed great friendships with celebrity clients like Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, and Hugh Jackman and love the international opportunities that it brings. This kind of work makes for some of the most memorable moments of my career.

What can we expect to see from Renya in 2015?Recently, I have worked with people like Linda Evangelista, Heidi Klum, Christy Turlington, and Eva Mendez for the likes of Russh, Elle, Harpers and Vogue; you can look out for some of this work early this year. I am also really excited about my new blog on valonz.com.au; I love collaborating with photographers and makeup artists and just doing hair; expressing myself and bringing back all the inspiration from around the world and putting it out there.

As a Cloud Nine Ambassador, what is it that you love about the brand? Cloud Nine produce great quality products that are perfect for my busy salons and on set. We use them for everything in all three of my salons, from the Waving Wand to the Touch and Micro Irons; we constantly have customers commenting on how incredible their hair feels after we use the tools. My favourite go-to tool would have to be the Cloud Nine Waving Wand. Most mornings I use it to create just the right amount of movement and texture in my hair.

What has been your favourite hair trend over the years? I love loose waves. It is an effortless, chic and timeless style that is perfect for day and night. The best way to achieve this look is to use the Cloud Nine Waving Wand. After using the Wand, brush your curls through to create a more natural look. If waves aren’t for you, you can never go wrong with a classic, sleek, straight ponytail, it also gives you an instant facelift.

What drives your passion? My team are my passion; I have over 10 staff who have been with me for more than 20 years, they are so important to me and its vital to invest in my team and offer them opportunities. Surrounding myself with creative people who share my vision fuels my creativity. I also have a genuine love for what I do and the exciting industry we are all part of.

If you weren’t a stylist, what do you think you would be doing? When I was young I always just wanted to get out of school, start working and be creative. In those days, the only other thing I ever wanted to be was a cartoonist!

What are your top 3 tips for running a successful business? 1. Be open to new ideas 2. Surround yourself with a great team that understands your vision 3. Don’t be stagnant, keep evolving and creating. Be inspired.

MINIMALISM, THE CLEAN SLATE OF FASHION, THE CLASS ACT, THE RESERVED SIBLING OF ORNAMENTAL TREND.Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, wherein artists intend to expose the essence or identity of a subject through eliminating all non-essential forms or features.

This concept is about putting the power of the Cloud Nine brand on show with a clean, crisp background. No tricks, no distractions, the styling and silhouette are clean and simple to give way to effortless hair that every girl wants to have.

Think beautiful art, the latest collections from some of Australia’s most influential fashion designers and hair crafted to absolute perfection by the genius behind BORIS, and you have A Night of Fashion at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Located in the heart of Adelaide’s cultural boulevard, the Elder Wing of the Art gallery of South Australia came to life on September 20th in a burst of fashion. With it’s third consecutive sell-out crowd, Adelaide’s fashion lovers came together to enjoy the showcase from some of the biggest players in the fashion industry alongside some of South Australia’s home grown talent. With cocktails from Collins Bar and Elephant Gin in hand, guests lined the runway in awe.

Amongst collections from Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender, Willow, Calibre, Max Mara, sass & bide and Adelaide’s own Cameo and Keepsake The Label, Damien Rinaldo’s Origami Sleek ponytail complimented perfectly. Damien and his team, including Cloud Nine Ambassador Atilio Dusa, created a beautifully simplistic look that exuded elegance from every angle, using the perfect combination of evo and Cloud Nine. The products that proved absolute necessities for the night included evo mister fantastic and builders paradise, and of course the Cloud Nine irons for perfectly straight ponytails.

“The inspiration behind this look is drawn from Japanese culture and the world of fashion, the wearability of a ponytail meets high fashion. Think seams and cuts of fabric, the origami fold represents this. The look is simple yet interesting, it leads perfectly into fashion” – ANOF Hair Director Damien Rinaldo

1. Spray damp hair with evo mister fantastic to add texture. Blow-dry hair off of the face, smoothing small sections of hair with a Cloud Nine Dressing B rush and straighten hair with the Cloud Nine Original Iron

4. Brush the left section back into the ponytail without buckling the hair at the part, apply evo builders paradise

BASIN CUTTERS IS ONE OF ADELAIDE’S HIDDEN TREASURES, NOT JUST YOUR AVERAGE SALON; BUT A LAUNCH PAD FOR ITS DIRECTORS AND THEIR CREATIVE VISIONS. BASIN IS ALL ABOUT ONE THING: THE CLIENT.

Located in the leafy suburb of Goodwood, Basin Cutters has crafted a stellar reputation amongst locals in its impressive 13 years in business. Established as a result of Stephen and Mandy meeting on the way back from Hair Expo, the Basin Cutter wheels were put into motion some 22 years ago. With the common goal of opening a salon that harnessed their own training and education courses, the pair opened the salon in 2001 with 4 key stylists. Now with an impressive team of 23, Stephen and Mandy are at the forefront of a successful salon that is as much about fun as it is providing a seamless customer experience.

What is Basin Cutters all about? Awesome customer service. Clients can choose many good salons to spend their money in, so we want our clients to not only have a great hair cut but an amazing salon experience. The second thing is staff culture, by providing a great place to work we are improving our productivity and staff retention while creating a fun and workable atmosphere.

What are your top tips for running a successful salon? The day we decided to spend a little less time with the scissors and balance a little more time working on our business, is the day we changed the way our whole company ran.

What piece of advice would you give to a hairdresser starting their career? The more you put in, the more you will get out. You work in an exciting industry; there are so many possibilities and so much opportunity.

What are your goals for 2015?1. Taking our team to Brisbane for our

Basin Team Building Conference 2. Expand and refurbish our salon 3. Expand our educational offering

You were recently part of the Parlour Creative Guest Artist Night, what do you think makes this such an important industry event? We need to share more with our fellow hairdressers, like what works and what doesn’t in the world of business and creativity. For young people joining our industry, teaching them is the most important thing we can do and the best way to do this is through bringing the community together.

What is your favourite Haircare brand? evo! We love its uniqueness, it really makes the product stand out and the results are spectacular when it comes to recommending it to our clients.

GUEST ARTIST SHOW

PARLOUR HAIR ACADEMY’S ANNUAL GUEST ARTIST SHOW RAMPED THINGS UP YET AGAIN IN LATE 2014; AMPLIFYING THE VENUE, NUMBER OF ATTENDEES AND MESSAGE.

The brains behind it all, Parlour founders, Robert and Karen Bava started the Creative Guest Artist Night three years ago, after finding a lack of recognition for the amazing talent residing in the South Australian hair landscape. Through work with their successful salon, Parlour Hair and Parlour Hair Academy, the Bava’s know the importance of education and have made it their mission to raise the profile of professional hairdressing in South Australia. Once again, with support from evo and Cloud Nine, the South Australian hairdressing industry joined forces to celebrate raw talent from the newly graduated Young Gun’s through to award-winning industry leaders.

From humble beginnings, the first Creative Guest Artist Show was held in a local bar with a 160-strong crowd. In just three years the event has doubled in size and upped the ante with the likes of Jules Tognini, Paul Dare, Damien Rinaldo and many

more gracing the stage in 2014. With live demonstrations and presentations from every corner of the industry, the Creative Guest Artist show provides the ultimate platform for the young, and not so young, to come together and showcase their talent.

In a room full of vibrant stylists, colourists, apprentices, salon owners and everything in-between, the night is all about the common bond everyone shares. The love of hair. It’s all about de-cluttering the industry, leaving the egos at the door and coming together to celebrate the industry. “I think about egos and hairdressing and I just hate it, I just like hanging out with people. Ideally, one day we’re all going to work together in peace and harmony and not have to worry about egos. And that’s what these events are for, that’s what Parlour Hair Guest Artist Show is all about” some wise words from Jules Tognini.

With the night as big as ever, it was only fitting that the Bava’s message resonated stronger than ever. Their mission to bring to light what hairdressing is all about, to break down the stereotypes truly came to fruition. Everyone in attendance left feeling inspired and reminded that hairdressing isn’t just a job but something that shapes everyone's lives, and something every hairdresser should be proud of.

ONE DAY WE’RE ALL GOING TO WORK TOGETHER INPEACE AND HARMONY AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT EGOS.

Early in 2014 we introduced you to the inspirational Bond Family and the Captain Courageous Foundation as we launched a fundraising campaign to support this worthy charity. Over the past year the Bond’s, with the help of Haircare Australia and many other local businesses, have continued their quest to find a cure for the rare, life threatening blood disease that their son Angus and 800 others in the world suffer. The Diamond Black-fan Anemia that affects Angus currently has no known cure and due to its rarity, has very limited research funding.  In a bid to find answers and help not only their son but everyone suffering at the hands of life threatening blood diseases, the Captain Courageous Foundation has confidently rallied to keep building those much needed research dollars. The Captain Courageous Foundation Spartan Electrical Ball was held on the 15th November 2014 to help additional funds and bring together the Captain Courageous community. The night was hugely successful and saw the foundation raise a very impressive $410,000 for the national and collaborative research program.

Throughout 2014, Haircare Australia staff held a range of fundraising initiatives to support the Captain Courageous Foundation. For every dollar raised through these initiatives, the Gauvin family matched the donations, dollar for dollar. Truly inspired by the family’s commitment to the cause, the Gauvin’s also donated an additional $5,000 when Jessica Bond’s sister Eliza fearlessly shaved her head at the fundraising ball in support of her family and their journey.

Haircare Australia and staff raised a total of $15,000 in 2014, The Captain Courageous Foundation is an initiative that the Haircare Australia and Gauvin family will continue to support over the next year and we hope you will get behind us to make finding a cure a reality for this amazing foundation and their quest to find a cure for Black-fan Anemia and other life-threatening blood diseases.

To donate, please contact Jess Rijnbeek on (08) 8403 8244 for more information. And remember, all donations will be matched, dollar for dollar by Haircare Australia.

We introduced Reuzel to Australia in late 2014 and barbershops around the country have fully immersed themselves in the Reuzel and Schorem ethos. With a cult like following, the founders of Reuzel – The Schorem Barbers of Rotterdam - have established themselves as a household name amongst the barbering community across the globe. In their mission to preserve the traditional barbering art form, the duo are passing on their knowledge and passion through social media and a brand new barbering academy in the heart of Rotterdam; The Old School.

As we set out to find the faces of Reuzel Australia, we put the simple question “are you Australia’s biggest scumbag?” to the barbering community. The influx of video entries showcased the barbers’ passion for conserving the craft while showing their unique spin and fresh perspective on what barbering means to them. After lengthy consideration, Denis and Alen Celahmetovic from Barber Bros & Co on the Gold Coast and Sean Palmer of Uncle Joe’s in Perth were donned the worthy ambassadors of Reuzel Australia. As our official ambassadors, the trio were sent to The Old School in Rotterdam at the end of January for 3 days of intensive training by the creators of Reuzel; Leen and Bertus. Learning the signature and classic cuts that have made the Schorem Barbers such a sensation, Denis, Alen and Sean are now fully equipped to share their new found skills with the rest of Australia’s barbering community.

With Alen and Denis having an impressive 20 years of barbering experience between them, the Barber Bros & Co venture was always destined for success. Opening its doors in December 2013, Barber Bros & Co is carefully based on the Schorem ethos, providing patrons with an experience that boasts a warm, friendly feeling, oozing in old-school charm. With some 400 clients coming through the doors each week, Barber Bros & Co goes to every length to ensure a masculine atmosphere with attention to every tiny detail of the barbering experience. From barber chairs dating back to 1907, a 100-year-old cash register to the vintage timber and exposed brick, authenticity exudes.

With such an innate respect for barbering, inspired by the greats, Alen and Denis take the time to educate their patrons about the bygone era of traditional barbering. But, most importantly provide patrons with what they describe as the most ruthless, rag haircuts and hot towel shaves. Of the sound opinion that barbering is not about fashion, but instead about style and tradition, they base their careers on respecting the barbering heritage and the products like Reuzel that so perfectly compliment it.

SO WHO ARE THESE SCUMBAGS?

Starting his barbering career in 2007, Sean Palmer has spent the best part of it working alongside some of the world’s most experienced barbers, especially during his time in the UK.  Joining the Uncle Joe’s team not long after its opening in 2013, Sean has seen the shop develop into a barbering experience worthy of the curiosity and popularity it now receives. Not just your average barbershop, Uncle Joe’s offers it’s grooming facilities to punters from all walks of life; mixed with the fresh vibes from the men’s clothing store and café attached.

In keeping with barbershop tradition, Uncle Joe’s features recycled materials that perfectly compliment the 100-year-old chairs and traditional barbering tools and products on display. Sean’s passion is kept alive by the barbering industry’s ability to constantly challenge and open the mind. He recognises that there is always room to learn and new styles and techniques are always needed. Providing fresh cuts and shaves that make his clients feel like a boss is his ultimate mission. Having trained in a traditional barbershop dating back to the 1930’s, Sean has a keen eye for the finesse of men’s grooming, hoping to bring the old-school techniques to the surface for today’s barbershop dwellers.

FOLLOWING THE GROWING SUCCESS OF OUR FAVOURITE NEW POMADE, WE EMBARKED ON A SEARCH TO FIND AUSSIE AMBASSADORS THAT WERE WORTHY OF BEING DUBBED AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST SCUMBAGS.

Acrobats hanging from the ceiling pouring champagne, amazing musical guest Taylor Henderson and a surprise trip to Hawaii for 180 staff, were just a few of the wonderful things that over a thousand Stefan employees and guests enjoyed at the annual Stefan Awards Night. This year however, was more magnificent then ever as Stefan celebrated an honorable 50 years in business. The star-studded event included guests; Premier Campbell Newman, Mayor Graham Quirk and an address from the Prime Minister Tony Abbott. All of whom congratulated Stefan on his remarkable contribution to not only Queensland, but also Australia. The Masquerade themed event held at the Brisbane Convention Centre was celebrated over the Labor Day long weekend. The evening was a wonderful time to reflect on the commendable things that Stefan has achieved throughout 50 years in business. His contribution to Australia not only in the hairdressing industry but also his strong involvement with numerous charities including his own, MASKS, has been nothing but admirable.  The evening kicked off with music by special guest DJ the Faders. The guests were amused by a flash mob of entertainers who were jumping and dancing around, hyping up the crowd and getting everyone excited for the action-packed evening ahead. After an array of delicious food, the guests were seated to enjoy the much-awaited Hair Show. This year, the competing Stefan hairstylists reflected Stefan’s 50 years in business through their amazing

hair creations. The 50 gorgeous Tamblyn models strutted the runway and showed off the amazing work produced from a group of Stefan stylists. The excitement didn’t stop there. The winners from each category were announced and presented with a trip to the Stefan Offshore Conference in Hawaii! The talented group will head off next year for the opportunity to learn one-on-one tips from Stefan and industry leaders and attend a number of hair and make-up workshops during their five-day stay in Honolulu.  As the night concluded and the guests began to leave, there were smiles all around. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Stefan staff and guests to show their appreciation to Stefan for all that he has done over the last 50 years. Stefan is a true Australian Icon who has changed the hair industry for the better. His passion towards hair and creating a happy environment for his staff has not gone unnoticed, which is why so many people turned out to celebrate and honor his success. The night was a reminder of exactly what the hairdressing industry is all about; good communication. Stefan reinforced that communication makes all the difference when it comes to a content workforce and happy clientele.

"It's amazing how many times people tell me, Stefan, you know why I go to your salons? It's because your staff listen. I would like to pay tribute to our staff of 560 hairstylists who listen to our clients needs and take great care of them. You are the secret to the Stefan success story."

Here's to another 50 years.

Haircare Australia & Moroccanoil joined together for Stefan's 50th Anniversary celebration, saluting the amazing man himself and his achievements within the hairdressing fraternity.

Jan and Geoff Gauvin attended the celebration with Moroccanoil's Kayla Juhasz and Abbie Williamson for an inspirational night which left everyone in awe of Stefan's contribution to the industry.
