HAMILTON SINGERS Hamilton Singers ended their year last year with a
Christmas Concert and singing at our local Carols by
Candlelight festivities. Our year has started with Australia Day where we managed a rendition of Shelter that came
across reasonably well with very limited rehearsal
time. We started rehearsals this year on Feb 12th
beginning with work on Anzac Day preparations and repertoire to perform at our local Eisteddfod in the first
week of June. In 2018 our focus is to achieve a high
standard of musical excellence. Consequently, we may present fewer performances than in the past. Hamilton
Singers pride themselves on presenting a wide range of
music to meet all musical tastes. All the best to you all for this year. Beth Tonissen 03 5572 3535
INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER MALE CHORUS The International Harvester Male Chorus has a long history in Geelong. Formed in 1943, the choir was originally
made up of employees of the International Harvester
factory, which operated from 1939 and closed in 1982. As
the choir's success grew, membership was opened up to other men from outside the company. The choir continued
after the company closure, even though the employee
members became widely dispersed into other workplaces, or decided to retire from the workforce.
Now, after seventy-five years, the choir is once again
seeking new members. Although a male choir, for the last
year or two the choir has been directed by Jeanette John, a pocket dynamo who has injected the choir with a new
enthusiasm. A full program of performance is already
underway for 2018, starting on March 2nd. New members wanted: Men who enjoy singing are
invited to join the International Harvester Male Chorus at
their rehearsals on Monday afternoons from 1:30 – 3:00, at the Uniting Church Hall, 31 Noble Street, Newtown
(Entrance in Saffron Street, through Back Door). For more
information, contact Slavko Holowka. Phone:

THE COLAC CHORALE Our Chorale have resumed regular weekly rehearsals, as
we prepare for our next Concert to be held in St. John’s Church, Colac on Sunday 15th April.
The title for our Concert is Follow the Rainbow - this
time, our songs have a “colour theme” such as Yellow Submarine; Blue Moon; Where the Green Willow Grows;
O, My Luv’s Like a Red Red Rose; The Pink Panther and
other colourful titles – along with the fun one… Green Eggs and Ham. We also sang the patriotic I am Australian
by Bruce Woodley, on stage at the Memorial Square,
Colac, as part of the local 2018 Australia Day celebrations,
conducted by the Colac Otway Shire. I am delighted to report that, on this day, our Chorale piano
accompanist, Ms. Pam Radcliffe, was honoured by
receiving the “Arts Service of the Year” award for her
work over many years as a music teacher, for sharing her talents at the local aged-care facilities - and as a member of
the Colac Music Teachers Association, organizing
eisteddfods, plays, musicals and community concerts. A just reward for her many years of wonderful service to our
community – and especially to our Colac Chorale.
Gwenyth Knox (03) 5231 4278
U3A GEELONG CHOIR Welcome back to all of our existing choir members and a
special warm welcome to all of our recent new choir members - Amanda, Janet and Jean, all sopranos, who will
now provide a very good balance to the sound of our choir.
As we commence our new choir year, we reflect back to
our wonderful Christmas luncheon held at The Packing Shed in Moolap, which was well attended with 39
members present.
Margaret is to be commended for arranging this wonderful get-together. Table presentation was wonderful and the
luncheon absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was superb
and the table service outstanding! I’m sure we shall return to this delightful venue at the end of 2018!
As always, the choir paid tribute to our wonderful Music
Director, Margaret Hughes as well as our fabulous
accompanist, Jan Smith, by singing an Ode To Margaret and Jan lyrics very well written by Gwen Connor. This
piece was sung to the music of Away In A Manger and as
the lyrics were hilarious, there were times when the choir couldn’t control their giggling. It was terrific for all to
share a lighter side to our singing and the lyrics very
appropriate to Margaret and Jan!
Besides the tribute to Margaret and Jan, we also presented them with very well deserved Christmas gifts, for without
either of these two amazing ladies, there would certainly be
no U3A Geelong Choir. One of the great strengths of our choir, is the very diverse variety of choristers and how we
all form the very basis of the friendship and fellowship of
this wonderful Choir of ours! Regarding our repertoire, we are currently going over some
of our music which we haven’t sung for a while and hope
to start learning some new works in the coming weeks, so
that we will have a new program of songs to share with residents in aged care homes.
"This is my oxygen - every week I look forward to singing
with the Choir. We all put our best efforts into our practices - the rewards are palpable."
Dawn Cunningham

Please distribute The Choral Grapevine to your choir members.
MILLICENT CHORAL SOCIETY Every two years the South Australian Country Choral
Association Festival is held. This year it will be at McLaren Vale in August. We plan to participate probably joining in
with the Riverland Choir to swell our combined numbers.
Meanwhile in April during the local Geltwood festival market day in our main street we will present some items.
At some stage during the year a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon
Concert is on the agenda. Jennifer Golding
MERRI SINGERS We had a very successful Christmas concert in early December. Our guest artists were our very own accompanist
Merle Wines in solo piano works, and new-to-the-South-
West soprano Louise Keast. It was exhilarating to sing with
her. In the week after Christmas, members of the choir took part in the annual Port Fairy Sing-it-Yourself Messiah. Now
we are getting ready for our role as part of the Lake Bolac
Eel Festival Choir. There are new works written specially for the festival by young Melbourne composers. It is
a learning process for us, and for the composers. Anyone
who comes to the festival on the weekend before Easter is
welcome to join the afternoon rehearsal and be part of the Festival Choir at the Twilight performance. Jeannette
Hajncl (03) 5561 2291
CANTORI During December, Cantori and local actor Deon Cameron
gave three performances of A Christmas Carol: readings
from Dickens great work interspersed with seasonal music. Our next outing is as one of the choirs at Raise the
Rafters, a fundraiser at the end of February for Crossley
Church, where we will sing plainchant, Lassus and Arcadelt. We are also preparing to sing the Byrd 4-part
Mass as part of a church service in April. Jeannette Hajncl

VOX ANGELICA GEELONG CHAMBER CHOIR 2018 Vox Angelica Geelong Chamber Choir, is a vocal ensemble
of 22 experienced and advanced singers, directed by Tom
Healey. Its first performance for 2018 is Music of the
Americas, on May 13th, at 3pm, at St Paul's Anglican
Church, La Trobe Terrace, Geelong. For this performance
the choir is supported by Frank De Rosso on organ and Sonoka Miyake on piano. This will be the closing concert of
the 10th Annual Windfire Music Festival 2018.
The programme includes Baroque works from Mexico, Peru
and Argentina, and a Magnificat for double choir by Theodore Pachelbel (the son of Johann), who settled in
South Carolina in the 18th century. Canada is represented in
works by Denis Bedard, Eleanor Daley and Stephanie Martin, and the USA by William Billings, Edward
MacDowell, HT Burleigh, Aaron Copland, Thomas A
Dorsey, Randall Thompson, Gerre Hancock and Moses
Hogan, and there is a modern tango from Argentina by Astor Piazzola.
This is a great programme, performed in one of Geelong’s
finest acoustics. See the Choral Calendar for booking details.
CORYULE CHORUS The new year has commenced in a whirlwind, with a new Christmas CD being recorded on Jan 25th. This required us
to resume from our Christmas break earlier than has been
customary to polish the 12 songs we were recording for the CD. It is now in the “can” and we look forward to our sound
engineer fine tuning everything, and all the other bits and
pieces that go towards the total CD production. It will
become available later in the year, obviously with an emphasis on being available for sales and distribution in the
lead up to next Christmas.
We are now back into normal rehearsals, preparing ourselves for the ever-increasing number of performances
already booked over the coming months. We are particularly
looking forward once again to our workshop day with Internationally acclaimed soprano, Sally Wilson on April
12th, and also many of us plan to join choristers from all
around the district for the Gala Concert at St Marys Basilica
on May 4th.
With several new valuable additions to our personnel over
recent months, we are looking forward to a great year of
music and fellowship together. Rob Casey 0407 439 323
www.coryulechorus.com
WONDROUS MERRY A refreshed group of choristers joined together for their first
rehearsal, enthusiastic for the year ahead. Wondrous Merry is a group of around fifteen singers, who perform a diverse
range of music from madrigals through folk music and
classical to popular songs. We have a lovely temporary home for rehearsals with splendid view of the bay and
reflections of sunsets.
The choir is looking forward to taking part in the combined
choir for the 10th anniversary of the Music of the Basilica Festival of Music.
Last year's final performance for Music at the Basilica's
Country Ramble was a huge success. The venue was the beautiful Holy Trinity Anglican Church at Ceres, eerie in the
fog of an early summer's morning. The music was light
hearted, the three tenors hilarious performance of Soldiers
Three a highlight, with an unexpected bit of theatrical serendipity at the end, the audience were appreciative and
the morning tea sumptuous.

THE GEELONG CHORALE The 2018 year has commenced strongly for The Geelong
Chorale with fifty choristers enrolled. A most worthwhile
workshop was held at St Paul’s Anglican Church on Saturday 3rd February with thirty attending and work
commenced on items for the first concert, Dixit Dominus
and the Coronation Anthems by Handel. Our regular
Monday rehearsals held at St Luke’s Uniting Church started on Monday 5th February. Allister Cox continues
his fine leadership as musical director, and the choir is
fortunate once again enjoy the support of Kristine Mellens, our excellent accompanist.
A busy year has been planned with four major concerts, as
well as forming part of the massed choir for the Windfire
Festival's 10th Anniversary concert, organising the
Western District Choral Festival on June 17th, a
performance at Colac, and a number of our singers joining
the Geelong Symphony Orchestra Chorus for a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on Saturday
October 27th.
We particularly look forward to planning and hosting the Western District Choral Festival to be held at the
‘SPACE’ venue at Geelong Grammar School on Sunday
17th June, where choirs from schools and the general community from Geelong and the Western District are
invited to perform, enjoy the work of other choirs and to
meet one another.
Once again Anne Pilgrim on behalf of The Geelong Chorale has created an enticing program of Singing the
Classics for 2018 (see the Choral Calendar for details).

WINDFIRE CHOIR Music at the Basilica formed an exciting choral group, the
Windfire Choir, to present sacred choral music. The choir consists of experienced singers and vocal scholars from
the City of Greater Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula,
Surfcoast Shire and Lara. We present two concerts a year, most often at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in
Geelong.
The choir gave its inaugural performance, conducted by
Rick Prakhoff on Wednesday 27 March, 2013. This year's first concert is in Holy Week (Wednesday,
March 28th), and is titled THE ROYAL BANNERS.
Music includes works by Max Reger, Arvo Part, Stephanie Martin and the premier of 14 Stations of the
Cross by Malcolm John. Rick Prakhoff is conductor, with
soloists Emily Swanson and Meredith Cox. (See the
Choral Calendar for full festival and concert information.)
GISBORNE SINGERS Cantata Memoria commemorates the Aberfan tragedy of
21 October 1966. It was on this day that 116 children and 28 adults perished when a coal spoil tip enveloped
Pantglas Junior School together with some houses in Aberfan, South Wales. Karl Jenkins was 22 and in the
first term at the Royal Academy of Music at the time;
inevitably the disaster had a massive impact on him and
millions of others. He was commissioned to compose a work to commemorate the 50th anniversary alongside the
brilliant Welsh poet Mererid Hopwood who wrote the
libretto. 22 Gisborne Singers took up the offer to be part of the
North American premiere in Carnegie Hall, New York in
January 2017. Karl Jenkins’ work was not new to our choir having performed his The Armed Man: a Mass for
Peace in 2015. Thus preparing and performing the
Australian Premier of Cantata Memoria is fitting. It’s
also worth mentioning that the Gisborne Singers have developed a reputation for the fine quality of their
performances. At the risk of appearing ‘up ourselves’ I
include a comment sent to us by a soloist from one of our recent performances - “Thanks again for having me, I
honestly think the Gisborne Singers are the finest amateur
choir I’ve heard in Australia. Very impressive sound.” The music for Cantata Memoria is accessible, memorable
and truly moving. It uses repetition effectively and
borrows appropriately from other musical sources, and the
final result is riveting. It shows a truly Jenkin stamp throughout.
There will be two performances at New Gisborne on 20th
May, and Kyneton on May 27th (see Choral Calendar for details). Church of Christ New Gisborne; 27th May, Our
Lady of the Rosary Church Kyneton. Robert Blair
GEELONG WELSH LADIES CHOIR 2017 saw the GWLC perform with the Wanganui Male
Choir as part of their tour of Australia. It was a fantastic
collaboration with the choirs and the afternoon was
enjoyed by all. Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir is planning its own tour to New Zealand later this year, and look
forward to catching up with the Wanganui Choir then.
This year the GWLC also welcomes a new musical director, Dylan Edge, who takes over from Stefanie
Gumienik. We are looking forward to seeing the different
performance style and learning new skills and songs under his leadership.
There are four performances already planned for 2018.
The first is on March 4th at Cymanfu Ganu, a singing
festival in Melbourne at St Michaels Church. The choir will also perform at the Western District Choral Festival
and give a send off concert prior to the New Zealand tour.
Finally, GWLC will join the Sydney Male Choir and Coryule Choir for a joint concert on October 13th.
