Winter Tracks celebrates all things snow in Cook County Feb 1-10 The 10-day event features everything from downhill to cross county skiing snowshoeing to snowboarding riding a snowmobile or horse-drawn sleigh over hill and dale in this unique North Shore winter festival

Therersquos lots of art to look at too Snow sculptures will be ready for viewing at several locations in the county and the Grand Marais Art Colonyrsquos Winter Plein Air exhibit opens on Feb 1

ldquoThe whole event is about celebrating winterrdquo said Sally Nan-kivell executive director of the Cook County Visitors Bureau ldquoWinter Tracks started on the Gunflint Trail several years ago and has grown to become a countywide eventrdquo

On the West End for example Lutsen Mountains is holding a Family Festival Feb 1-3 which includes everything from fam-ily Olympic races and games a bonfire a torchlight parade and fireworks

The snow sculptures can be viewed at Blue-fin Resort Eagle Ridge Resort Caribou High-lands Harbor Park the Grand Marais Art Col-ony and Bearskin Lodge on the Gunflint Trail

On the East End Grand Portage Lodge amp Casino hosts the 10th annual Easter Seals Snowarama on Feb 2 where snowmobilers are invited to hit the Grand Portage trails for a good cause Therersquos a poker run on Saturday followed by a dinner and awards program and then dancing to the West End Band

On the Gunflint Trail the Cook County Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club holds its annual Fun Run that Saturday too Participants can regis-ter at Devil Track Resort or Hungry Jack Lodge and collect their cards at lodges up and down the trail The day concludes at The Landing at Devil Track Resort with games food prizes and music

Horse-drawn sleigh rides at the Patten Family Homestead on the Trail are ongoing through Winter Tracks as well

Therersquos plenty of entertainment scheduled for the two weekends of Winter Tracks See the en-tertainment calendar for details

During the week therersquos lots to do Both Bear-skin Lodge and Golden Eagle Lodge offer day and night outdoor ice skating and the Cook County Community Centerrsquos rink is open to skaters Several cross-country ski trails boast night lighting as well Guided snowshoe hikes are also available as are cross country ski tours ice fishing dog sled rides and lots of downhill skiing at Lutsen Mountains

On Friday Feb 8 Gunflint Lodge will host a Winter Wilderness Survival Presentation and Hike at 10 am Gunflint Pines Resort will hold a family sledding party from noon to 2 pm and there will also be a skijoring demonstra-tion at Gunflint Lodge at 2 pm

On Sunday evening Lynn Rogers of the Wild-life Research Institute in Ely will give a presen-tation on black bears from 7-8 pm at Caribou Highlands

February is a great month to be in Cook County Therersquos always lots of great music enough snow to play in and fun festivalsevents throughout the month including the Winter Arts Festival Winter Tracks Sivert-son Galleryrsquos Fireside Chats and the North-ern Fibers Retreat

First up this month is the Winter Arts Festival put on by the Grand Marais Art Colony featuring the Winter Plein Air event and the Snow Sculpture Symposium This is the fourth year for the Winter Arts Festival and artists will be out this week photographing and painting winter in all its

moods Many will stay at Menogyn YMCA Camp on West Bearskin Lake

Winter Plein Air is one of the only outdoor paint-ing events of its kind in the country and it concludes with a great exhibit at the Grand Marais Art Colonyrsquos Founders Hall This year for the first time theyrsquove opened up the event to pho-tographers so there will be wonderful photographs as well as paintings to enjoy at this yearrsquos exhibit The opening reception is at 6 pm Friday Feb 1

The next afternoon the Art Colony will open the print studio for Community Ink Day Print Your Own Valentines Experienced print-makers will be in the studio from 1-4 pm to provide assistance and coaching to every age group as they print their own valentines Pre-registration is not required but appreciated Call 287-2737 for more information

Then that evening Feb 2 Sivertson Gal-lery will host the first of this seasonrsquos Fireside Chats Entitled ldquoHot Air for Cold Nightsrdquo The talk will feature plein air painters Neil Sherman and Dave Gilsvik and photographer Mark Tessier who will discuss their experi-ences during Winter Plein Air

Duluth painter Aaron Kloss will give a Fireside Chat at 6 pm Saturday Feb 23 entitled ldquoThrough the Birchesrdquo Next month watercolor painter and fused glass artist Nancy Seaton will talk about her work in a presentation entitled ldquoMy Colorful Neighborhoodrdquo on March 2 Rick Allen and Marian Lansky who run Kenspeckle Press in Duluth and produce woodblocks engravings and letter press work will speak at 6 pm March 9 The 13th annual Inuit Premiere is set for March 16 and throat singers Nina Segalowitz and Lydia Etok will be there

In other art news Grand Marais singersongwriter Michael Monroe has received a $10000 Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board to produce and promote a new DVD ldquoMichael Monroe Live at the Log Cabin Concertrdquo

Fine furniture maker Peter Pestalozzi of Ely also received a $10000 grant from the State Arts Board as did bead painter Jo Wood Pestilozzi will use Lake Superior imagery sketches photographs and writing as inspiration for new furniture piec-es and exhibit in Grand Marais and other Minnesota locations Wood will create a new collection of fiber and beadwork focused on the many layered meanings of home She will exhibit at One Roof Community Housing in Duluth

The Thunder Bay Art Gallery is hosting the National Gal-lery of Canadarsquos retrospective exhibition of works by artist Carl Beam Beam was the at vanguard of a new and assertive art that challenged the prevailing marginalization of contemporary Aboriginal art Approximately 50 of Beamrsquos works are on ex-hibit at the gallery through Feb 25 The gallery is open Tuesday through Thursday noon to 8 pm (EST) and Friday through Sunday noon to 5 pm

The Grand Marais Art Colony and the Spirit of the Wilder-ness Church will present ldquoSeen Through Native Eyes A Cel-ebration of Native Artrdquo Feb 28-March 3 The event features Robert Two Bulls (Oglala Lakota Pine Ridge SD) and John-son Loud (Ojibwe Red Lake) artists and Episcopal priests as Artists in Residence They will exhibit their work (painting and

The boat launch on the southwest corner of Grand Marais Har-bor may be renovated to make the site more usable and environ-mentally friendly say city and Minnesota DNR officials who are working on a new plan for the site The DNR approached the city about renovating the access in 2011 when it had funding available The state agency would pay the design permitting and construction costs The city would be responsible for maintain-ing the access

The idea of improving the access site isnrsquot new says Dave Ter-steeg city parks and recreation director The present ramps are only suitable for launching smaller shallow-draft boats The projectrsquos primary goal is to create a deeper accessmdashsix to eight feet deepmdashto accommodate hydraulic trailers and possibly sail-boats Tersteeg expects to use floating docks similar to those in the Grand Marais Marina to reach the deeper water

The new launch and all facilities such as restrooms would be accessible to people with disabilities and thus compliant with federal regulations Tersteeg says the site would be designed as a public promenade that retains the present pavilion and the bench near the dog pound area allows pedestrian access in-cludes new tree plantings near the water and improves access to the rocky point Another amenity may be a new nonmotorized access for sea kayaks between the picnic pavilion and the exist-ing ramp

Indeed improving the green space is an important aspect of the project

ldquoThe city has emphasized the launch site de-sign needs to blend into the shoreline and retain the park-like feel of the harborrdquo says Joe Russell DNR area supervisor for parks and trails in Two Harbors

One DNR stipulation is the site must provide ad-equate parking for boats and trailers In current plans creating a parking area for the southwest launch includes relocating two public utility ga-rages although the cityrsquos Public Utilities Com-mission which manages them has not found a new location for the buildings or announced a time line for moving them A nearby area would be paved and striped for parking regardless if the buildings are moved Paving would allow for bet-ter storm water management on the site Eventu-ally the site may include an Aquatic Invasive Spe-cies Station where boats could steam-wash their boats after coming off the lake

While the launch location is fairly well-sheltered it is susceptible to south and southeast winds The DNR would assess the rock breakwater protecting the launch to determine if it needs improvements

Both the city Park Board and the City Council have approved a concept plan for the launch The next step is to enter into a partnership agreement with the DNR The Park Board has re-viewed a partnership agreement presented by the agency At this writing the City Council was scheduled to review it at its Jan 30 meeting Once the agreement is signed the DNR can get the

project into its budget possibly for 2014-15Tersteeg says so far the launch project has not been controver-

sial and it conforms to the Minnesota Land Trustrsquos conservation easement that protects the recreation area from commercial de-velopment There are three launches on the Harbor a DNR site on the east side near the Coast Guard Station constructed in 1986 a launch in the marina and the launch in the southwest corner

The ability to hear is something many of us take for granted For a long time Grand Marais resident Jeff Nemitz was one of those people Then a few months ago while going about his everyday routine everything changed

ldquoI had completely lost the hearing in my right earrdquo Nemitz said ldquoWhen you poke your finger in your ear you can hear something But at that point I could not hear anythingrdquo

After a few trips to the doctor and a steroid prescription Jeff began to regain some of the hearing he had lost Some of the damage was permanent however and he has had to adapt to the change

ldquoI have become very sensitive to loud soundssince that happenedrdquo Nemitz said ldquoIt is hard for me to listen to live music indoors like in bars and stuff I just do not enjoy it at allrdquo

What happened to Jeff is not uncommon Some 36 million Americans report some de-gree of hearing loss making it one of the most common physical conditions after arthritis and

heart disease according to the Hearing Loss Association of America Unlike Jeff however hearing loss comes on slowly for most people

ldquoIt is a really stealthy onsetrdquo Tim Osthus Duluth hearing instrument specialist said ldquoIt is not like one day they can hear and the next day they cannot It is something that happens over 20 to 30 years and each year it gets a tiny bit worserdquo

Once a person has hearing loss the worst im-pact is often on day-to-day conversations with friends and family

ldquoThey just realize holy cow I cannot hear a dang thing they are sayingrdquo Osthus said ldquoThat social isolation is something that happens slowly and they sometimes do not realize it is the hearing lossrdquo

For Jeff the inability to hear all of the voices in a conversation with a group of friends caused him to avoid situations where lots of people are talking at once

ldquoI have become a hermit I avoid events where there are a lot of voices and stuffrdquo Nemitz said ldquoI cannot hear their conversations Even at home I am often saying ldquohuhrdquo or ldquowhatrdquordquoS

The good news is that there are solutions for people who experience hearing loss

ldquoStep one is obviously coming in and being seenrdquo Osthus said ldquoThere are an awful lot of places that offer free hearing testingrdquo

Once a hearing loss patient has been seen by a doctor they can be fitted for a hearing aid or instrument In recent years advances in tech-nology have made hearing aids lighter and more comfortable for the people wearing them

ldquoThe modern-day hearing instrumentmdashthey are phenomenal in that they are so comfort-ablerdquo Osthus said ldquoIn a short period of time people forget they are wearing themrdquo

Just like glasses or braces a first-time wearer of hearing aids needs to allow them a period of adjustment

ldquoYou are basically retraining your brain to hear so right off the bat you are going to hear things in ways you have never heard before and sometimes it can be overwhelmingrdquo Ost-

hus said ldquoSome peoplesrsquo voices will have tones you have not heard so you might not recognize them and everyday things like running the faucet will sound like Niagara Falls but those things fade away with timerdquo

Hearing aids come in various styles from types that you can see to varieties that are not visible to others

ldquoWith all the people who have hearing loss only about 30 percent ever actually do some-thing about itrdquo Osthus said ldquoReally do you want to let those moments pass you byrdquo

For Jeff looking into hearing aids is just part of the process of dealing with his newly onset hearing loss

ldquoI am looking into it since they tell you that your brain tends to adapt to whatever yoursquove got to work with so the sooner you get it the less time you have to adaptrdquo Nemitz said ldquoIt is just something I am going to have to get used tordquo

Last year North Shore Highway 61 held the first ever Readerrsquos Choice Restaurant Awards survey and contest and more than 300 readers responded

It was a great success and the restaurants that won were really excited and honored

Wersquore doing it again this year and we hope yoursquoll participate

There are some cool categories like what restaurant has the best finger food or who is the best server on the North Shore

Where do you go to get the best breakfast the tastiest soup or steak And who has the best view

These are just a few of the categories in the Readerrsquos Choice Awards

The contest is the brain child of Sue OrsquoQuinn who works for Northern Wilds Media pub-lisher of North Shore Highway 61

Shawn Perich co-owner of Northern Wilds Media said he and fellow co-owner Amber Pratt immediately jumped on the idea when OrsquoQuinn proposed it

ldquoWe live in a community that has a tremen-dous variety of restaurants considering its sizerdquo Perich said ldquoWe have a lot of choices of good places to eat and theyrsquore not all serving the same standard fare We tried to come up with a contest that would reflect that and gen-erate a little excitement out there and we didrdquo

Perich said the restaurants were really pleased when they won

The contest also gave peo-ple a chance to recognize outstanding restaurants and servers And Janice Beck received a $50 gift cer-tificate to her favorite res-taurant when she won the contest drawing

When the Readers Choice Restaurant Awards was first

launched last year Perich said they had no idea what kind of responses they would get or from whom

ldquoThey came from all over the placerdquo he said ldquoIt wasnrsquot just locals And we were also sur-prised that restaurants that were closed in the winter still got votesrdquo

Angry Trout for example which is closed in the winter got firsts for Best Fish Best Salad and Best View Open year-round the Gun-flint Tavern got firsts for Best Soup Best Veg-gie Option Best Beer and best Finger Food The Crooked Spoon received firsts for the Best Steak Best Lunch and Food Prep

Sven amp Olersquos was chosen for being the Best Kid-Friendly and for having the Best Pizza Chez Jude won for the Best Wine List and tied with the Lemon Wolf in Beaver Bay for Best Sweets

Cascade Lodge Restaurant won for the Best Breakfast and My Sisterrsquos Place was voted as having the Best Burger on the North Shore

Last but not least Rob Larson server at the Trestle Inn was chosen as the Best Server on the North Shore

Each of the winners received plaques too so look for them the next time you visit your fa-vorite eatery

Comments are due by Feb25 for the Minne-sota DNRrsquos proposal to authorize grant-in-aid trail funding for the 16-mile Cook County All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Trail in Tom Lake area of Grand Portage State Forest in northeastern Minnesota

Cook County will sponsor the proposal and will provide trail development and mainte-nance in cooperation with the Cook County ATV Club

Located in the Grand Portage State Forest the trail follows existing forest access routes mini-mum maintenance roads and forest system roads The route was designated for ATV use

in 2007 as part of the DNRrsquos comprehensive multi-year state forest classification and desig-nation process

Adding the existing trail to the grant-in-aid system qualifies it for additional resources and funding that can be applied to trail signs main-tenance monitoring and repair The trail will be managed for ATV use although other public uses are allowed It may be closed at times for safety or to prevent erosion or trail damage

During the frozen days of late winter you donrsquot like to find wa-ter dripping from your roof down your walls But if your home is susceptible to ice dams this scenario may be all too familiar

More often than not ice dams are a dripping and damaging consequence of having an inadequately insulated roof cavity said Nace Hagemann of Nace Hagemann Construction For ice dams to form two things are needed warm air rising out of the building and snow on the roof

ldquoGenerally speaking warm air is moving through the roof cavityrdquo said Nate Works of Caribou Cabin Services ldquoHot air from the inside of your home warms the underside of the roof rsquos plywood and the snow melts aboverdquo

When the melted snow flows down the roof and hits the cold soffits at the roof rsquos edge the water freezes Over time frozen melted snow backs up on the roof creating an infamous ice dam On warm or sunny days the dam starts to melt some-times right into your home Or the dam may stop the snow melt before it gets to the cold soffits causing the water to flow back under your shingles and seep through your roof

ldquoThey can create a lot of damagerdquo said Works ldquoIf water gets into the rafter cavity the wet insulation can mold and if the in-sulationrsquos wet and never dries out it can rot the wood next to itrdquo

In addition ice dams can damage ceilings and stain sheetrock walls Ice dams deteriorate roofs and are hard on asphalt shin-gles said Works

Both Works and Hagemann agree that ice dams should be limited to older homes The amount of insulation required by current Minnesota building code should prevent ice dams on new construction said Works If your new home suffers from ice dams somethingrsquos wrong said Hagemann

Homesrsquo southern exposures can be slightly more susceptible to ice dams said Works although often the snow melted by the sun on homesrsquo south sides runs all the way off the roof without stopping on the soffits to form a dam

Homeowners can combat ice dams in a number of ways A popular solution is stapling heated cables onto roofs More so-phisticated ice melt systems that use aluminum panels to cover

heated cables can be installed near the bottom edge of the roof for permanent ice dam prevention

Not a fan of putting more holes in roofs by installing heated cables Hagemann suggests homeowners also look into insulating or vent-ing their roof cavity to keep the hot air causing ice dams from sitting there Vents that bring cold air in through the soffits help keep the roof cav-ity cool

ldquoHopefully the vents take care of [heat from the homersquos

interior] before the heat reaches the roofrdquo he said Hagemann said any type of blown-in insulation such as

spray foam will help prevent heat leakage better than rolled insulation

ldquoFiberglass insulation is tough to get really tightrdquo he said Both Works and Hagemann recommend a roof underlayment

like ice and water membrane between the shingles and the roof rsquos plywood to further deter water seepage from the roof

Homeowners should remember that ice dams canrsquot form if there isnrsquot snow on your roof said Works A roof shovel or rake with an extendible handle lets homeowners remove snow from their roofs while they stand on the ground Removing snow should be homeownersrsquo first step when dealing with an existing ice dam he said

You should resist the ill-advised temptation to climb on the roof to hack away at the ice build-up

ldquoYou stand a chance of hurting yourself and your roofrdquo said Works

Personally Hagemann feels homeowners are better off shov-eling their roofs than installing a metal roof which are often lauded for their easy care Hagemann said he prefers the insula-tive qualities of asphalt shingles and hersquos also not fond of the rapid speed that ice and snow can slide off metal roofs which could injure people and critters who might be caught in falling snowrsquos path

If snow removal doesnrsquot alleviate the ice dam problem Works said he uses hot water spray from a pressure washer system with a heater to slowly melt away the ice Most professional equip-ment designed for ice dam removal uses hot water he said which although time consuming is the safest and most effec-tive method for dealing with ice dams

When it comes to ice dams prevention is always preferable to clamoring on an ice-slick roof
