TRANSFERING TO A 4 YEAR COLLEGE
STEPHEN HANDEL, PH.D., EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, COMMUNITY
COLLEGE INITIATIVES, THE COLLEGE BOARD
Since each
college/university has
its own requirements
(including CUNY), the
most important thing
you can do to make the
transfer process run
smoothly is plan
ahead!
Start with these
Resources…
WHERE TO START?
RESOURCES FOR
TRANSFERRING
LAGCC Transfer Office- B215
College Websites
The Admissions or Counseling offices of
the four-year colleges you’re thinking of
attending
Program advisers for specific majors (most
colleges have them)
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Your four-year college will look at the courses you took and
the grades you earned at your two-year college and decide
how much credit to give you…
• If enough of your courses transfer, you’ll start at the four-
year college as a junior.
• It’s ultimately up to the receiving institution to review and
accept your transfer credit.
• If you don’t get credit for some of your courses, you may
need to take them again at the four-year college.
• When you graduate from the four-year college, only that
college’s name will appear on your bachelor’s degree.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN
LOOKING AT COLLEGES
• Your current major! Ex- If you are currently a Criminal Justice Student, you may want to look for schools that specialize in your field of study.
• Find out specific prerequisites needed for entry!
• Location- Local, regional or out of state?
• Support Services- Guidance, Counseling and Academic Supports (ASAP at 4 year CUNY school is unlikely)
• Campus/Housing- Plan or living in a dorm or apartment? Commute?
• Sports and Activities- Extra curricular activities can help you excel in school
• Financing/Paying for School- Overall cost of attendance
• Diversity- Makeup of faculty and student body.
• Job Placement/Graduate School Transfer Statistics- How successful are their graduates?
QUESTIONS TO ASK
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
• Does LaGuardia have a special transfer relationship — often called an articulation agreement — with any four-year colleges?
• Will the credits I earn be accepted at the four-year colleges I’m considering?
• What grades do I need to earn in my classes to get credit at the four-year colleges?
• What’s the minimum GPA I need to maintain to get into the four-year colleges?
• Will I receive any certifications when I complete my degree?
• Is there a path for the Masters’ Degree?
• What financial support do you offer (work study, grants, scholarships)?
• Are there any mentoring programs, leadership opportunities, or research possibilities?
• Describe the advisement and registration process.

Example: Starbucks
Employees are empowered by management to make decisions without having to first report to management, and are encouraged to think for themselves as an entity of the business. The culture towards employees can be described as relaxed' and supportive. Starbucks has avoided a hierarchical organization structure and has no formal organizational chart. It is evident that employees at Starbucks share common goals. An employee was quoted as saying; "We all have this common belief in the product we sell".
The “Build A Great Employee”
Workshop
Class will break into groups and be charged as
‘bosses’ with creating the ideal employee by
developing a list of characteristics and
attributes. Groups will then share their
findings.
Summary: What do employers
want?
Corporate culture buy-in
Mutual respect
Meeting Deadlines
Dedication to the job
Showing up on time
Communication Skills
High Quality of Work
METRO CARD
DISTRIBUTION
Please anticipate higher than normal lines
at the Bursar office on Monday. Remember,
if the lines are too long you can always
come back at another time to pick up your
metro card. Any inappropriate behavior
(cutting, pushing, shoving etc) will be
viewed as a campus security threat, and
could have serious implications on your
status in ASAP. Please use your better
judgment, or contact your ASAP Advisor if
there are any issues.
