Page 2 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2016 My Dear Sisters and Brothers, This Lenten Season I invite you to break the patterns of behavior that take you down the same old streets. Break the pattern of anger we may transmit to others; Break the pattern of impatience, hurrying, only to discover you missed someone along the way; Break the pattern of paying more attention to a human face than a screen in front of you.

Autobiography In Five Short Chapters

Chapter I I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost... I am hopeless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter II I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in this same place. But it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it there. I still fall in... it's a habit... but, my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter IV I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Chapter V I walk down another street.

God our Father, in this Lenten season may we not betray your love by trying to deserve it. Help us to fast from all that distracts us fro your love. Help us to recognize you as the orgin and goal of all of the desires you place in our hearts. Help us to be true to ourselves and true to you by continuing to beg for your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Fr. Rich

Estoy perdido ... estoy deses-perado. No es mi culpa. Se tarda una eternidad para encontrar una salida. Capítulo II Camino por la misma calle. Hay un agujero pro-fundo en la acera. Yo finjo que no lo veo. Me cai-go de nuevo. Padre Rich

Prayer for Homeless People Hear our prayer today for all women and men, boys and girls who are homeless this day.

For those sleeping under bridges, on park benches, in doorways or bus stations. For those who can only find shelter for the night but must wander in the daytime.

For families broken because they could not afford to pay the rent. For those who have no relatives or friends who can take them in.

For those who have no place to keep possessions that remind them who they are. For those who are afraid and hopeless.

For those who have been betrayed by our social safety net. For all these people, we pray that you will provide shelter, security and hope.

We pray for those of us with warm houses and comfortable beds that we not be lulled into complacency and forgetfulness.

Jesus, help us to see your face in the eyes of every homeless person we meet so that we may be empowered through word and deed,

and through the political means we have, to bring justice and peace to those who are homeless. Amen.

Winter Shelter Well, our Winter Shelter is in full swing, and it is going beautifully. Our guests are enjoying a wonderful dinner each night provided by different ministries, a hot shower, an extensive clothes closet, haircuts, access to dental and medical services and a warm, safe place to sleep.

We have been blessed to have many, many volunteers sign up each night to help with the serving and clean up. We have had such a generous outpouring from everyone in the community which has enabled us to provide this outreach project to our brothers and sisters in need. Thank you.

Together in Mission 2016 Next weekend we will celebrate our parish participation in Together in Mission. This annual appeal is love and our faith in action as it allows us to share our gifts with the less fortunate parishes in the diocese. This important diocese wide program helps fund 80 poor parishes and 63 schools and religious education programs where people of all ages and ethnicities embrace the “love that is the measure of our faith”. At the offertory next week we will be offered the opportunity to participate in this important program by completing a pledge card or making a one time donation. Our parish commitment is $140,000.

Join us for a Blessing Ceremony!

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul has moved their pantry to the northeast corner of the hall, adjacent to the driveway. Join us on February 21, 2016 after the 8 am Mass for the blessing of

their new location. See this new great space for yourself, tours of the SVDP Pantry to follow!

Creation Care Corner - Doing Our Part Pope Francis reminds us that Caring for Creation has been part of our Catholic faith for over 800 years, starting with St. Francis. He calls us to care more in our generation to help future generations. This weekly series reminds us that we can make a difference on Earth, for Earth and for God's people everywhere. Here's a suggestion for this week on how making a slight change in your habits can make this world a better place for all.

Simple Actions Go a Long Way-To-Do Tips for Energy Savings

3. Use less water; 20% of the energy used in California goes just into moving water around, so saving water saves energy. Install a low-flow showerhead, efficient fau-cet aerators, and low-flow toilets. Catch the El Nino rain from your rain gutters into rain barrels (rebates pay for most of these). It’s easy and effective. For more tips, please see the Catholic Climate Covenant's website http://www.catholicclimatecovenant.org/ If you would like to be part of HNM's Creation Care Team, please contact Tom Nolan at [email protected].

From the Director of Administration… What we know and understand as Church more or less begins with today’s Gospel reading from St. Luke. Jesus calls His first disciples — His first Apostles. Luke tells us of the miracle that occurred for St. Peter and the others in their fishing boat. At the Lord’s command, they cast their nets after a time of catching nothing, and “they caught a great number of fish.”

Note Peter’s reaction, however. He falls to his knees and implores Jesus, “Depart from me Lord, for I am sinful man.” St. Peter is astonished and amazed, and he is, quite frankly, afraid of what he has just experienced. We may sometimes react to the Lord’s calling in a similar way. It is a bit overwhelming and frightening to come to the re-alization that we, too, are called, and that the Lord has expectations of us.

Yet, this is how what we know as the Church began. It commenced with Jesus calling simple fishermen according to our Gospel. These, of course, then developed into twelve, then hundreds, then thousands, and now millions upon millions of those called to be disciples. We are among that throng. When Luke speaks of “following,” he is talking about discipleship. We are called to be stewards and disciples, but are we willing to “leave everything and follow Him?”

Faith Formation Classrooms have been transformed into HOPE'S CLOSET, a Winter Shelter Boutique. We have received an abundance of clothing, which has been sorted and

folded for our guests to enjoy.

As you can imagine, after sorting over 900 pairs of shoes, hundreds of coats, shirts and jeans

our volunteers were a bit exhausted.

The HNM Parish Staff prepared lunches and provided breakfast for our guests.

Winter Shelter Updates

A continental breakfast, sack lunch, and a warm Dinner is provided every night to each of our guests. If you would like to sponsor a meal,

please contact David Luna at [email protected]
