Bo Bartlett was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia. His education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine arts from 1976-1981 and personal relationship with Andrew Wyeth prepared him to be the introspective realist painting that he is today. Bartlett’s paintings are similar to his mentor’s works of art because of their landscape portrait quality, yet this contemporary artist gets at a modern tune that plays throughout his body of work.

Los Sonadores pictures a group of young men and one young woman walking across a plain in the dusk and distance of an unknown city. One could guess that these youths are in close proximity to Los Angeles and that they are Mexican workers, but Niccolo Brooker writes that Bartlett’s painting on our liturgy cover, “Is as much a universal statement as it is specific commentary. An ongoing and timeless human struggle is pictured. One that has happened, is happening and will happen.”1

REFLECTIONS“The arts and the sciences do have a place in the Christian life -- they are not peripheral. For a Christian, redeemed by the work of Christ and living within the norms of Scripture and under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, the Lordship of Christ should include an interest in the arts. A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God -- not just as tracts, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. And art work can be a doxology in itself.”

- Francis Schaeffer, Art and the Bible

"A consuming, selfless desire to give to God is the essence and the heart of worship. It begins with the giving first of ourselves, and then or our attitudes, and then of our possessions—until worship is a way of life."

– John F. MacArthur, Jr.

Our purpose is to Celebrate Christ and Serve the City by bringing the good news of Jesus Christ (the Gospel) to Denver through the life and ministry of an authentic church community and to work for the spiritual, social and cultural renewal of our city.

WELCOME TO CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

A WORD ABOUT USING THIS LITURGYMany of us are unfamiliar with the use of a structured liturgy (order) in worship. The word liturgy means “the work of the people.” It points us to worship as an act rather than as an experience. The experience comes as a result of the act, for we have come to do something (worship) and the blessings we receive are in response to what we have given. Much of the liturgy at City Presbyterian is antiphonal (“responsive”) in character. These antiphons echo the rhythms of heaven, for throughout Scripture deep calls to deep, day answers to night, mountain calls to valley, one angel calls to another, God calls out to his people. As Thomas Howard has said: “Antiphony deepens the shallow pool of our personal resources and sets us free from the prison of our own meager capacity to respond adequately in a given situation…in the act of worship on earth we begin to learn the script of heaven.” We recognize that it is easy to mentally “check out” when reading things aloud. As you read and sing, ask God to empower you to worship with all your heart and mind. Like all skills, worship becomes easier the more you do it. Turn off the auto-pilot and worship as though God is truly present with us today– for he truly is.

IN OUR LITURGY THIS MORNINGThe Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord is officially celebrated on the 2nd day of February because this day falls exactly forty days after the celebration of the birth of Jesus on December 25th. According to the Old Testament law found in the book of Leviticus, a Jewish woman was not to enter the sanctuary of the temple for forty days after giving birth to a male child. After the fortieth day a new mother was to go to the temple and present the priest with an offering for her purification.

It was on the occasion of Mary’s purification that she and her husband Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to dedicate Him to God. Since the institution of the Passover, every first-born son of Israel belonged to God and had to be redeemed by the sacrifice of a lamb. In dedicating Jesus, however, Mary and Joseph presented the one Lamb of God who would one day be sacrificed on a cross for the salvation of all God’s people.

It was in this moment of Jesus’ presentation at the temple that the Old and the New Covenants met for the first time. No longer would any of God’s people need to offer sacrifices in expectation of the coming Messiah, because God himself had provided the one and only sacrifice that could remove the stain of sin. No longer, too, would salvation belong solely to the Jews. The presentation of Jesus Messiah was good news for all people, as Simeon, a witness of this event, states in his song (Nunc Dimittis) recorded in the Gospel of Luke:

“For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."

It is ironic that as the New Covenant eclipsed the Old (beginning with Jesus’ presentation at the temple) the significance of the temple itself was transferred to the body of Jesus. No longer would the children of God visit a designated place to enter into His presence, but the presence of God in the person of Holy Spirit would indwell those who became joint heirs with Christ though faith.

WHAT IS WORSHIP?Our word for “worship” is derived from the old English word worth-ship. We can define worship as seeing the God’s worth and giving God what He is worth. Worship is what human beings are built for. As Gerald Vann said, “Worship, then, is not part of the Christian life; it is the Christian life.”

True worship occurs when we set our affections on God. Our affections are not merely emotions, but our motives – the things that drive us and that we truly treasure. If we do not worship God, we worship other finite things. We set our hearts on relationships, careers, money, accomplishments, approval, comfort, control – deriving our meaning and sense of self-worth from them. When we worship God, we pull our affections off those things and set them on God.

The first cycle of worship is the Liturgy of Celebration, where we enter into God’s presence offering the sacrifice of praise through our singing and other responses as we ascribe to Him his worth. The next cycle is the Liturgy of Confession. Having approached God in all His glory, our idols are brought to light and any illusions of self-righteousness melt away. We approach God in cleansing honesty, giving our sins to Him and receiving His pardoning mercies and restoration. Having spoken to God, we now listen as God speaks to us in the Liturgy of Consecration through the proclamation of His word. And finally, after encountering the written word we experience Jesus the Living Word through the Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper, where we experience through the physical elements of bread and wine the inward, spiritual realities of the grace of Christ as we partake in communion.

How do I know I’ve worshipped? Ask yourself, “Has my mind grasped the truth? Has the truth touched my emotions? Has the truth led to a changed life?” If all three are not organically connected, worship may be an intellectual event, an emotional experience, or a volitional pressure – but none of these alone is worship. In the words of theologian Peter Toon, “you know that you have worshipped when the mind descends into the heart.”

ABOUT THE INTROIT• Use the introit as an opportunity to prepare your heart for worship.

• As a courtesy, please turn off your cell phone at this time.

• The refreshment table will be unavailable until the Passing of the Peace.

• Within our order of worship Celebrant denotes anyone leading a certain part of the liturgy.

P R A I S E"Language -- every vowel, every consonant -- is a gift of God. God uses language to create and command us; we use language to confess our sins and sing praises to God." This quote from Eugene Peterson calls

us to consider the words we use and hear in worship this day as gifts from God. Praise God that we have a so many forms to use to offer him praise, as we were created and designed to do.

WELCOME

THE GREETING Celebrant: ! Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and blessed be his kingdom, now and

forevermore. "Come now, let us reason together,"says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)

People: ! The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined from ore and purified seven times in the fire. (Psalm 12:6)

R E S T O R AT I O NConfession invites us to speak words that are remarkably honest about our own sin, words that do not come naturally in our relationship with God or with our fellow human beings. Such honesty, perhaps more than we could ever generate in our own strength, becomes remarkably liberating when we sense the immensity of God’s grace. In this way we can think of the words of confession (and of the assurance of pardon that

follows) not as an onerous obligation but as a gift of grace.

HYMN OF PRAISE My Jesus I Love Thee

CONFESSION OF SINCelebrant: ! God of grace, you have given us Jesus, the light of the world, but we choose

darkness, and cling to things that hide the brightness of your love. People: ! Immersed in ourselves, we have missed the Savior whom Simeon recognized, and

have failed to make an offering of our love and service.

Celebrant: ! Forgive our spiritual blindness, and shine the line of your Spirit upon us now as we confess to you our sins in the silence of our hearts.

[Silence for self-examination and personal confession}

Celebrant: ! Gracious God, baptize us with your Spirit, that, forgiven and renewed, we may proclaim your love to the nations and tell of your glory shining in the face of Jesus.

People: ! We ask these things in his name. Amen.

THE READING OF GOD’S WORDCelebrant:! Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church from the book of Second Chronicles.People:! Thanks be to God!

2 Chronicles 7:1-81 When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. 2 The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled it. 3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying, ! "He is good; ! his love endures forever."

4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD. 5 And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the people dedicated the temple of God. 6 The priests took their positions, as did the Levites with the LORD musical instruments, which King David had made for praising the LORD and which were used when he gave thanks, saying, "His love endures forever." Opposite the Levites, the priests blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.

7 Solomon consecrated the middle part of the courtyard in front of the temple of the LORD, and there he offered burnt offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar he had made could not hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings and the fat portions.

8 So Solomon observed the festival at that time for seven days, and all Israel with him.

Celebrant: ! Herein is wisdom. May God bless to our understanding this reading from the Word. People: ! Thanks be to God!

C O M M U N I O NWe celebrate The Lord’s Supper because of God’s amazing grace. Through it we remember all that we have received in Christ and we’re reminded that we have not earned any of this by our achievements, but that it has been given to us by God as a free gift! The Lord’s Supper is a means of grace through which God acts

to seal the promises of the gospel. The power of the celebration does not lie in our ability to think hard about Jesus’ death and our sin, but in the way God’s Spirit uses the celebration to nourish and sustain us.

All who are trusting Christ for their salvation and desire to live for him are invited to come forward to take the sacrament.

• Those serving communion will be invited forward first to receive the sacrament • There are four communion stations: two at the front and two in the back of the Turnhalle. Please go down

the center aisle and return to your seat via the side aisles.

• If you wish to receive the sacrament, come forward with your hands open and palms crossed • If you prefer non-alcoholic grape juice, please take a cup from the outer circle of the wine tray • Young children who do not yet take the sacrament may be brought to any communion station for prayer • Gluten-free communion wafers are available by request at the stations in the front

RECEIVING OF THE ELEMENTS

- The people come forward -

During Communion, there are people in the Prayer Room at the back of the Sanctuary to pray speci f ical ly and conf ident ial ly for you and with you. There

is a Communion Stat ion in the Prayer Room. Everyone is welcome.

I f you are not coming forward to receive the sacrament , consider using one of the prayers below.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful that I ever believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

City Presbyterian Church is engaged in an all-church movement to read the Bible from cover to cover in 90 days. The daily readings are about 12 chapters a day, which will take anywhere from 30-60 minutes, depending on your reading pace. This will be a challenging, yet encouraging time to read the entire Bible individually and to complete it as a community. Community Groups will have guided discussion questions and brief videos to review the readings each week. We will provide the reading schedules via bookmarks and Bibles. The best part is that you will complete the Bible readings by Easter! For more information or questions, please contact [email protected]

The Bible in 90 Days

Taking part in the 90 day challenge? On our bookshelf is The Bible in 90 Days. This Bible was made to make reading through the Bible in 90 days easier. It has big, easy to read print and is divided up so that if you read 12 pages a day, in 88 days you will have read through the whole thing! This Bible is not necessary to do the Bible in 90 days challenge, but it can be a help to those who want it. It is on our shelf for $15.

For those looking for a condensed reading schedule, one is available for download on our website on the Groups page (citypres.org/ministries/groups/). The document includes weekly readings of the Bible's "Greatest Hits," highlighting the most significant events and characters in the Bible. The readings should take an individual no more than 2 hours each week. Email Bryan Craig with any questions ([email protected]).

This is a great opportunity for City Pres folk to serve the youngest members of our church. If interested, please see Jen Hanson in the nursery, or email her ([email protected])

The programs are designed to encourage incremental accomplishment and a positive connection with the community through running. For more information about how you can volunteer as a runner, or in many other ways, please contact Kelly Lotterhos ([email protected]).
