PENNSWOOD BULLETIN 3
Debby McGlatheryApartment: G-107
Phone: 215-579-1247
Arrived at Pennswood: January 2020
Debby has been a daughter, a sister, a wife (twice), a step mother, a teacher, but most of all she has been a traveler. Over the summers she had free as an elementary social studies teacher, Debby visited not only Egypt, twice, but Israel, every country in Europe, Mexico, Russia, Greece, Turkey, and Kenya. (In Kenya, she took a balloon ride over the Serengeti.) “I brought slides back to show the children in my classes,” she said. “It was a way to make the countries and their cultures real, because I had been there and could talk about my experiences.” Her serene apartment has pictures from odd and interesting places around the world and also exquisite glass sculptures. “My grandmother worked in a glass factory, in Morgantown, West Virginia. She was merry and talkative, and also the union representative. I loved visiting her in the glass factory. I was fascinated by the process.” Debby led her younger life with optimistic spontaneity. She chose her college, Western State College, in Colorado, by choosing it from Lovejoy’s College Guide, and married a classmate she met in her senior year.
The young couple moved to Denver, where Debby started teaching fifth grade, with no experience and no resources beyond her college degree in education. What started as an adventure turned tragic when her husband died before he was 30. Debby went on to earn her MA in Education from the University of Colorado, where she was noticed by one of her graduate professors, who was so taken with her that he proposed. Her second marriage was a happy one. Her husband, Glenn, was loving, funny and smart. They had a good time together in Denver; she loved his grown children and teaching was a “perfect fit.” After Debby’s father died, her mother moved to Denver to be closer to her daughter. “My mother was fun to be with,” Debby said. “Even when she got older, she enjoyed life. In fact, our whole family is blessed with a good sense of humor,” she added. “My father and grandfather were serious men, but they married women who knew how to laugh. Our father was an architect, and while it is true he didn’t talk much, once when he was redecorating our house, he chose to paint two adjacent rooms red and orange. So I guess he wasn’t as reserved as we thought!” Glenn died in 2015, and her mother a few years later. As Todd Wayman’s sister, Debby had already visited Pennswood, and after Glenn and her mother died, she knew Pennswood was where she belonged. With Todd and Lynne right across the hall, she
feels welcomed into their circle of friends.

Nordic Pole Walking Class is Returning!
Nordic Walking is a modern and complete method of full-body training. Using specially designed poles to engage the upper body’s musculature, it offers a variety of benefits regardless of your fitness level, age, or experience. You can practice Nordic pole walking at almost any place and time. The potential to improve your health and fitness level is right in the palms of your hands. You can start today and do it for the rest of your life!
Some of the benefits of Nordic Pole Walking based on scientific studies include:• Develops upright body posture• All upper body muscles become
stronger and your cardiovascular system is trained 25% more effectively in comparison to walking without poles.
• Burns up to 46% more calories than exercise walking without poles or moderate jogging.
• Incorporates 90% of all body muscles utilizing 600 muscles that work at the same time to speed up metabolism.
• Helps to eliminate back, shoulder and neck pain.
• 26% less impact on hip, knee and foot joints.
We are going to be starting a new Nordic
Pole Walking Class on Monday, April 2. This class will be on Monday mornings for 45 minutes each class. This class will roughly run for eight weeks. If you are interested in joining in on the fun, you will need to sign up for a fitness assessment in Passmore Center as that is a requirement to take the class. You don’t have to have your own poles; we have the poles for you to borrow. There will be an opportunity at the end of the eight weeks to purchase the poles if you wish to. There is a sign-up sheet if you are interested in the Passmore Fitness Gym.

A Celebration of the Meadow at Pennswood
The creators of the Meadow Display in the Game Room have added two more components. We are eager to know what residents and visitors in general think of the Meadow and so we’ve added a drop box to collect any comments, observations and/or suggestions you wish to make.
The box is located on a table in the Game Room with a note pad and pen provided. We welcome all your remarks. A further addition is a copy of the map Henry Arnold so kindly made for us. Please take one and let one of us know if the supply runs out.

TWO WAYS TO VOTE BY MAIL: ABSENTEE BALLOTS
VS REGULAR MAIL-IN BALLOTS
An Absentee Ballot requires a voter to state a reason or excuse. The new Mail-in Ballot does NOT require an excuse. When should an Absentee ballot be used? According to PA Act 77, voters who qualify for an Absentee Ballot should use it rather than a regular Mail-in Ballot. Persons who qualify for an Absentee Ballot include: • People whose work or vacation takes
them away from the municipality where they live
• Those with a physical disability or illness that prevents them from going to the polling place
• Members of the military• People who may have a conflict due to
the celebration of a religious holiday
Applications for Absentee Ballots and regular Mail-in Ballots are available (separately) on the League of Women Voters section of Pennswood’s bulletin board.
IMPORTANT: If you send in an application for either an absentee ballot OR a mail-in ballot, the ballot you receive will have a bar code specific to you and noted in the poll books. If you do NOT return the Absentee
or Mail-in Ballot, and then you decide to vote in person instead, you will only be allowed to cast a provisional ballot at the polls.
DUE DATES for return of Absentee or regular Mail-in Applications and Ballots:
Your completed application for the Absentee or Mail-in Ballot must be received by the county no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21. However, it’s best to mail the completed application early to: Bucks County Board of Elections, 55 E. Court St., Doylestown, PA 18901. They will send you your Ballot when the state has an official ballot prepared.
Your completed ballot must be received by the county no later than 8:00 p.m. on Primary Election Day – Tuesday, April 28. Send it to the Bucks County Board of Elections (address above).
IMPORTANT: Postmarked dates do not count, so be sure to mail your application and ballot with sufficient time before each deadline.

We have all heard about the Copilot Program. I have been a volunteer since it's inception. On Monday night I was a recipient of this wonderful program.
A special thank to Linda Silver and Marcie White for setting everything in motion.
The comfort and caring of the volunteer who went with me was immeasurable. I did not feel alone and my needs were taken care of without my asking.
If you have been thinking of becoming a Copilot, please join now. You cannot imagine what a gift you will be to one in need.

Words MatterWe have begun discussing the use of words in our small group discussions, at staff meetings, and recently at the CWBT workshop on How To Be Helpful When Someone You Care About Is Struggling. In the same vein as these discussions I ask that you take a few minutes to watch this video. It’s well worth the three and a half minutes to hear how words, even when well intended, can make a huge impact. It’s titled Why you Should Stop Giving This “Compliment.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=122&v=bQwJNYYlkQA&feature=emb_logo

CHANTICLEER, A PLEASURE GARDEN
Wednesday, May 6, 2020
Join us on Wednesday, May 6 as we travel to Chanticleer Garden, called the most romantic, imaginative and exciting public garden in America, perhaps in the world. The garden is a study of textures and forms, where foliage trumps flowers, the gardeners lead the design, and even the drinking fountains are sculptural. It is a garden of pleasure and learning, relaxing yet filled with ideas to take home.
The PV bus will depart from the link door at 9:00 a.m. Our unguided tour will begin at 10:15 a.m. At 12:15 p.m. we will depart Chanticleer for a 12:30 p.m. lunch reservation at Margaret Kuo’s, just a short drive away. The cost of lunch is “on your own.” The restaurant will issue separate checks. The $18 transportation charge and the $10 garden admission will be billed on your monthly statement.
