It was great to be in Victoria as our government tabled its fourth consecutive balanced budget on Feb. 16. Our province continues to be the leader of eco-nomic growth and prosperity.

Budget 2016 which was pre-sented by local MLA and Finance Minister Michael de Jong - is a result of sound fiscal management and pragmatic decision-making. By promoting and guiding eco-nomic growth in our province, we are able to invest $1.6 billion of new and increased spending over the next three years.

Some of the significant investments highlighted in Budget 2016 includes new and expanded services to help families and individuals with their cost of living, as well as measures to bolster and protect communities across the province.

In fact, new capital spending will benefit us right here in Abbotsford and Mission: a significant portion of the $55 million allocated will increase

our emergency preparedness and pre-vention initiatives. We can upgrade our dikes and other flood-protection infrastructure to keep us safe and avoid a natural disaster.

Agriculture is a key economic driver in our area and provides a rewarding livelihood for thousands in our com-munity. There is a new Farmers Food Donation Tax Credit - now in effect - that is worth 25 per cent of qualify-ing agricultural products donated to a

We are also taking steps to support British Colum-bias families. All children will be exempt from Medical Service Plan (MSP) premiums directly benefiting about 70,000 single-parent families. Premium assistance will be expanded, reducing payments for 335,000 people across the province, helping seniors, families and individuals.

To help families save for their childrens educa-tion, we are expanding the eligibility for the BC Training and Education Savings Grant program to children born on or after Jan. 1, 2006. This program provides a one-time $1,200 grant to the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) that families can set up for their children. This expan-sion will give 40,000 additional children the op-portunity to save for their future education.

I am proud to say that B.C. remains in a good position with steady economic growth despite a fragile global economy. We are able to provide increased funding for services and help ease the cost of living for British Columbians.

The Abbotsford Hospice Society has partnered with The Reach Gal-lery Museum Abbotsford and the Abbotsford Arts Council to engage artists in Oxygen (O2) for the Soul, an initiative to provide local art and a home-like environment at the new Holmberg House, while raising cru-cial funds for Abbotsford Hospice.

The response from regional artists was overwhelming and the public may now view the 38 amazing works of art, divided and on exhibit at The Reach, 32388 Veterans Way and Kari-ton Gallery, 2387 Ware Street.

We invite the community to come out to admire these special worksand yes, start bidding on them through a silent auction process. By purchas-ing one of these O2 paintings and donating it back for a tax receipt, you will breathe beautiful life into Abbotsfords new adult hospice, Holmberg House, says Gaetan Royer, Executive Director, Abbots-ford Hospice Society.

Oxygen for the Soul art exhibits and silent auction will close to the public on March 13, but you will have one last opportunity to make a final bid at the Oxygen for the Soul Reception & Live Auction. The reception takes

place at The Reach Gallery Museum on Thursday March 17, 2016 at 6pm and tickets for the event are only $25.00.

During the rousing reception, local philanthropist Dave Holmberg Sr. will also auction off three carefully selected works of art as well as a package designed for culinary afi-cionados. The winning bidder of The Art of Gourmet Cooking package will have Chef Marcel Pfeiffer create a decadent dinner for 8 in their home. The live auction will also include one other surprise package for cultural entertainment lovers in our commu-nity. The reception is rounded out by delicious appetizers, live music by pianists Sharon Mitchell and Amy Zhao, and a unique performance by Vancouver visual artist cum soprano Karen Santos who promises to im-press with her operatic prowess.

Four new members have been appointed to the Ministers Ad-visory Council on Aboriginal Women (MACAW), which provides advice to the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation on improving the quality of life for Ab-original women and girls.

Karen Joseph, Sarah Robinson, Linda Thomas and Coreen Child bring a wealth of experience and will work alongside renewed members Chasity Davis (chair), Barbara Ward-Burkitt (vice-chair), Marjorie White, Paulette Flamond, Sophie Pierre, and Lorna Williams.

Joseph i s a member o f t he Kwakwakawakw people and is founder and executive director of Reconciliation Canada. She has over 18 years experience inspiring diverse partners to collaborate on strategic planning processes that support ef-fective change.

Robinson is a member of the Fort Nelson and Saulteau First Nations and has worked at various negotia-tion tables with provincial and federal government representatives.

Thomas is an Aboriginal legal aid law-yer and a member of the Tkemlups te Secwepemc First Nation. She is the

chair of the Aboriginal Justice Coun-cil, a multi-agency committee that she established to serve as an advisory to the First Nations court system.

Child is from the Kwakiutl First Na-tion and continues to advocate and serve on many First Nation boards and committees. She is educated in the fields of Indigenous child care and language revitalization, with a spe-cialization in Kwakwala language learning.

MACAW was created in June 2011 following the Collaboration to End Violence: National Aboriginal Wom-ens Forum as a commitment by the Province towards ending violence against Aboriginal women and girls. In June 2014, the Province signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Aboriginal leaders to reaffirm this commitment.

In December 2014, MACAW launched the Giving Voice Project, a strategic plan to support community engagement and action to address issues of violence against Aboriginal women. Under the initiative, MA-CAW has provided $350,000 to 37 community-based groups throughout B.C. aimed at changing behaviours and attitudes and mobilizing com-munities against domestic violence.

Mount Lehman Cemetery Expansion

Construction to expand the Mount Lehman cemetery be-gan in early February 2016. The expansion will not only double the current size, but will include the construction of one columbarium with two more to be constructed at a later date, the addition of a scattering garden, site improvements such as decorative fencing, on-street parking and providing a rain garden to handle stormwater run-off.

For safety concerns, the public is unable to access the Mount Lehman Cemetery during construction. Con-struction will be completed by mid-April 2016 and the cemetery will reopen to the public.

Early in February I had the pleasure of attend-ing the 9th World Re-ligions Conference in Ab-botsford. It was organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama and Columbia Bible College, and provided an opportunity to hear from an impressive panel of speakers representing the Baha i, Christian, Jew-ish, Hindu, Buddhist, Islam and Sikh faiths all perfectly moderated by local Council-lor, Sandy Blue. The objective of this interfaith conference was to create awareness and to promote religious respect, har-mony, and mutual understanding among various faiths and beliefs. And wow, did it ever do that.

To be one of the lucky ones at-tending, you could not have left without being touched by the effort of each speakers to call attention to how their own faith shared such important common ground

with that of other speakers. If you are of the Sikh faith you would have been especially proud of the presentation made by Giani Singh Kotli. He came across as beacon of great wisdom, kindness, and inclusiveness. should all be guided by. And it was also a reminder, that there will be differences that evolve (even within faiths) as a consequence of the way books of faith have been written and read, the way culture interfaces with faith, and the road different people around the world travel on their journey towards their faith. Still, it is the commonness across religions that can be drawn on to appreciate each other more, and to bring us more together. All in all, it really drove home the point that we would all be so much richer in both spirit and practice if we learned more about each religion.

I wished everyone in Abbotsford could have been there to hear what

each speaker had to say. It really added to my own belief that we should take a lead from Columbia Bible College on the matter of teaching about the worlds great religions. In fact, if it were up to me, I would require that students in our high schools and universi-ties take a course in world reli-gions as part of the requirement for graduation. Importantly, the point is not to promote one religion over another, but to promote an objec-tive understanding of each, and the value and significance of faith in peoples lives. Meanwhile, plan to attend the 10th World Religions Conference you will walk away inspired.

$100M fund to boost B.C.s tech sector and job creation

The Province of British Columbia is creating a $100-million ven-ture capital fund as it builds the foundation for a compre-hensive technology strategy aimed at stimulating growth in the fast-moving sector, creating jobs and strengthen-ing a diverse economy.

Premier Christy Clark today announced the new BC Tech Fund as part of the first of three economy-building pil-lars in the B.C. governments multi-year #BCTECH Strat-egy that will drive growth and job creation in the multi-billion dollar tech sector.

B.C.s technology sector is consistently growing faster than the overall economy making this the perfect time to catch the wave and help smaller companies join in the ranks of economy builders, said Premier Clark. With

this fund were creating a stronger foundation for B.C.s technology sector, which is a major employer in communities across the province, to shine on the global stage while creating well-paying j o b s b a c k at home for British Co-lumbians.

The BC Tech F u n d w i l l help prom-i s i n g t e c h companies in B.C.s tech sector by cre-ating an avenue for capital funding, enabling them to take the next step towards joining the ranks of other job-creating tech companies.

The new fund will also help develop a sustainable venture capital system in the prov-

ince, building on the success of the B.C. Renaissance Capital Fund (BCRCF), the provinces well developed Angel investment commu-nity, and responding to cur-rent funding needs.

Capital is one of three pil-lars in the forthcoming #BCTECH Strategy. This first pillar, announced today, also includes continuing to support B.C.s competitive tax system and research en-vironment.

The remaining two pillars, talent and markets, include actions to deepen the B.C. technology talent pool by developing and attracting the highest quality talent, and actions to make it eas-

ier to access new markets. The com-plete #BCTECH Strategy will be an-nounced in January.

The BC Tech Fund will be in operation in 2016 following an open procure-ment process to se-cure a private sector fund manager to

administer it. The process for identifying a fund manager begins today with a posting for a Negotiated Request for Proposal (NRFP).

B.C.s technology sector, a key pillar of the BC Jobs Plan, is consistently grow-

ing faster than the economy overall. Its continued growth is integral to diversifying the Provinces economy, strengthening B.C.s busi-ness landscape, and creating jobs in B.C. communities. The BC Jobs Plan builds on the strengths of B.C.s key sectors and its educated and skilled workforce, keeping the province diverse, strong and growing.

Council Remuneration Citizen Task Force Appointments

The City of Abbotsford is seeking individuals who are interested in volunteering to participate in the Council Remunera-tion Citizen Task Force. The purpose of the Task Force is to review the current remu-neration and expense policy for the City of Abbotsford Mayor and Councillors; and to provide recommendations for a remuneration structure for implementation in January 2017. The appointments to the Task Force will expire once the final recommendations are provided to the City Manager.

Membership

The Task Force will be com-posed of up to five voting members selected from the community and appointed by a Senior Management Selec-tion Panel on the basis of their experience and credentials in one or more of the following areas:

management experience of a large or complex organiza-tion;

business experience;

legal expertise;

human resources experi-ence; and

community service or en-gagement.

Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign 2016

Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun signs the first pledge for the 2016 Spread the Word to End the Word campaign joined by campaign leader Roshan Gosal, high school leaders of participating schools, and Special Olympics ath-letes. Roshan, the B.C. representative for Special Olympics Canada Youth Activation Council, initiated the cam-paign for a second year expanding from 4 to 10 Abbotsford high schools. This year it will be underway during the week of February 29 to March 4. The goal this year is to obtain 3000 pledges from individuals to stop using the dehumanizing and hurtful word retard or retarded. Roshan states, I am so grateful for all the support

we have received from Special Olym-pics BC, school administrators and most of all my peers. This year we have the support of 10 high schools: Yale, W.J. Mouat, MEI, Abbotsford Senior, Abbotsford Traditional, Das-mesh Punjabi School, Abbotsford Christian, Bateman, ASIA and Rick Hansen. THE REACH LAUNCHES VOICES OF THE VALLEY MUSEUM EXHIBITION!

The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford is making history again, literally! It launched its new Voices of the Valley permanent museum exhibition which provides audiences with a unique look at re-gional history. The exhibition invites everyone, from avid history buffs to school children, to explore the rich collections of historical objects, photographs, and archival materials that tell the story of the community through the eyes of individuals who have shaped it.

Voices of the Valley is truly a collab-orative success story. The exhibition was designed through a partnership between The Reach and the MSA Mu-seum Society, and brings together two significant historical collections. In addition, the exhibition has received great support from the local business community and has been developed through a five year Investment in Culture made by Columbia Kitchen Cabinets Ltd. One of the stories that runs throughout the exhibition

Sikh Academy students collect school supplies to donate to Syrian Refugees

Sikh Academy students started an initiative at the school to collect new school supplies for Syrian Refugee youth who have moved to Canada in hopes of starting their education. Students collected typical school supply items that they would purchase to begin the school year. Items include backpacks, binders, duo-tangs, rulers, glue sticks, pencils, crayons, pencil cases, sharpeners, scissors, pens, and various craft sup-plies. Over 2000 items were collected by Sikh Academy students over the last three weeks.

The school supply drive is one initiative, of a multi-pronged awareness and support approach, undertaken by Sikh Academy to provide support for Syrian Refugees coming to Canada. The first goal was to raise awareness in our school community as to issues surrounding the Syrian Refugee Crisis, and consider what the school could do to help. One of the schools teachers is directly connected with the conflict in Syria, and offered to speak to all students about the concerns. These presentations were carried out over multiple days to all students and staff.

From this, students began to consider what initia-tives they could undertake to provide additional support for those kids coming into Canada, look-ing to begin their lives. Students participated in a

Toy Drive over Christmas, where Toys collected by Sikh Academy students were recently provid-ed to Syrian Refugee families in the community by Guru Nanaks Free Kitchen. Students and staff started a clothing drive, and hundreds of items of clothing were donated directly to those families who recently arrived.

We believe in teaching our students the value of care in our community, and this is one example of Sikh Academy students and staff putting the interests of their fellow community members, especially kids, ahead of themselves, says Rob Purewall, Vice-Principal at Sikh Academy. It is important to have our students engage the community, and highlight some of the positive aspects of these types of youth initiatives to counteract the negativity and youth violence that has plagued the community recently. We want these students to be leaders in their community.

Melanie Mark was sworn in as the first-ever First Nations wom-an to become a B.C. MLA. Jodie Wickens was sworn in as MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Moun-tain, and became the youngest member of the legislature. Both women won seats in the two recent by-elections.
