February 26, 2014 Press Release: The Inter-University Cultural Festival “MiRAAS-2014” at Jamia On the second day i.e. February 25, 2014 of the ongoing National Inter-University Cultural Festival called “MiRAAS 2014” in Jamia Millia Islamia, the members of the Organizing Committee, especially the Debate Club were completely gearing up to begin with BOL – The National Trilingual Debate Competition in English, Urdu and Hindi languages. The topic for the debate was “This House believes that Social Media has brought about social change”. The event was inaugurated by Shri. Vijay Vidrohi, Political Editor ABP NEWS at the M.A. Ansari Auditorium at 10 AM. The three debates have collectively had the highest participation in its three year history, 50 institutions from across the Nation including Aligarh Muslim University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Lovely Professional University, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (Bhopal), G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, and Indian Institute of Mass Communication. The debate in Urdu was the first of the debates and 8 teams had participated in the debate speaking for and against the motion. These teams included teams from Aligarh Muslim University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia. The Urdu debate was chaired by Prof. Obaidur Rahman Hashmi, Department of Urdu, J amia Millia Islamia and judged by Prof. Habibullah Khan, Jamia Millia Islamia, Dr. Akhlaque Khan, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Dr. Arjumund Ara. Delhi University. This was followed by the most important and aggressive segment of the debate, the English debate, which stretched for more than 2 hours, this was the longest event in MiRAAS 2014. There were 20 teams that had participated in the event. The audience was enthralled by the oratory skills of the speakers. The audience applauded well in appreciation of the speakers and the judges praised all the speeches. The session was chaired by Prof Shameer Hassan, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and judged by Dr. Baran Farooqui, Jamia Millia Islamia, Dr. G. Srinivas, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Dr. Ahsa Khare, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. The participating teams made a long lasting impact on the audience. The event brought us close to the final segment of the day. While the debate was on at the auditorium, the afternoon hosted the Creative Writing Competition at the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution. After the debate the auditorium was filled with roars of laughter, the Mimicry Competition led to loud cheers and ended the day on a note of elation. Today, i.e. February 26, 2014 is the final day of “MiRAAS – 2014” which will be witnessing the most interesting of the competitions, with the revival of a long lost tradition of Jamia Millia Islamia, the Baitbaazi Competition. The Entrepreneurship Club will also host the Ad-Mad competition at the Auditorium in the Faculty of Engineering. The evening will have the most vibrant and energetic event, the Folk Dance Competition. The Valedictory and Prize Distribution Session of MiRAAS-2014 is scheduled to be held today at 5 PM. Mrs. Ameena Jung wife of Mr. Najeeb Jung, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia shall be the Chief Guest of the Valedictory Function.
