As kids leave, ask them how they’re going to give their attention to Jesus this week! Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. At the end of the hour, don’t be afraid to keep kids in Small Group, even if they’ve finished the activity! Check out the “Extra Time” options at the end of the Small Group time for ideas about how to keep kids engaged if the service runs extra long. It’s always a win if parents see their kids actively participating in Small Group when they pick them up! GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

ABC BINGO *Stay in one large group for this activity.

● Hand each kid a bingo card and a handful of chips. (You may need to have groups of kids share a pile of chips.)

● Have an adult choose letters from the bag of letter cards, and call them out. For instance, say, “Does anyone have an ‘C’?” (If you have younger kids, make sure to show them the letter too).

● If a kid has that letter on their board, they can put a chip on it.● The kid that fills up their board first, wins! (There will probably be several kids who

win at a time, that’s okay!)● Play multiple rounds if time permits!

*Bingo Cards will be reused for subsequent services.

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

here! Did anybody fill up your whole board during Connect Time? (Let kids respond.) Good job. When you’re thinking about something and paying really close attention to it, that’s called focus.

● Ask: What did you have to focus on during the game? (Let someone respond.) That’s right, you had to focus on the letters! What if I was calling out letters, and you were focusing on something totally different, what would happen? (Let kids respond: miss letters, wouldn’t cover your board, etc.) Yep, you’d never get your board covered, and you probably couldn’t win!

● Say: What do you think, out of all the things we just talked about, is the most important thing to focus on? (Let kids respond, “Jesus!”) That’s right, Jesus is the most important thing we can ever focus on, or think about!

● Say: Sometimes it’s hard to focus on Jesus, because there are so many things to do and think about! It’s even hard for grown ups to do. Sometimes… (talk about a specific thing that takes up a lot of your time, and how it might get in the way of you focusing on Jesus.)

FOCUS ON JESUS!

SEEK JESUS FIRST

● Say: Yeah, it happens all the time! Say: Let’s watch a clip about a dog who’s trying to pay attention to something, but gets distracted by something...

● Video: Up / Meet Doug● Say: Do you ever feel like Doug? I do! But even though

there are so many things to distract us, there’s one person we should be trying to give all our attention to: Jesus.

● Say: We can always start spending more time with Jesus, anytime we want to! Does it have to wait until next month? (Let kids respond.) Does it have to wait until next week? (Let kids respond.) No way! It can be right NOW.

● Say: We’re going to look at a story in the Bible about two sisters named Mary and Martha. They were friends with Jesus, and one day, they invited him over for dinner!

● Say: Can you imagine if Jesus was coming to your house for dinner? What would you do to prepare for him? (Let a few kids answer.) You’re right. You might clean up your room, or get food ready to cook, or maybe even get out some games to play!

● Say: Let’s a watch a video and see what happened when Jesus came to Mary and Martha’s house. As you watch, try to figure out what Mary focused on, and what Martha focused on.

● Video: God’s Story / Mary and Martha (4 min.)● Ask: Who can tell me the difference between how Mary

acted, and how Martha acted? (Let kids respond.) Yep, Mary spent time with Jesus, even though there was other important stuff to do. And Martha decided those other things, like cleaning and cooking, were more important than spending time with Jesus!

● Ask: What did Martha focus on? Mary? (Let kids respond.) Okay, so what did Jesus say we should focus on? (Let kids respond: Him) Yep, we should focus on Jesus before we focus on anything else!

● Say: He said we should love God with our whole hearts. Can you all make a little heart with your hands? (Let kids respond.) Martha thought she was doing the right thing, but really, she was focusing on cooking and cleaning more than she focused on Jesus!

● Ask: What did Mary do? (Let kids respond.) Yep, she spent time with Jesus as much as she could, right then!

GOD WILL GIVE US WHAT WE NEED

RESPONSE TIME AND WORSHIP

● Say: Do we have to wait until we’re grown ups to spend time with him? No way! Jesus wants us to focus on him right NOW. There’s a verse we’ve been learning that shows us this. Let’s all say it together! (Repeat the verse with kids.)

● Slide: Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

● Say: The first part of the verse says, “Seek the kingdom of God above all else.” Do you think it means we’re supposed to go looking for a kingdom somewhere? (Kids may respond yes or no.) Actually, it means we’re supposed to seek Jesus, and act like he would want us to act. See that word, “righteously”? That simply means to “live right” and act like Jesus whenever we can!

● Ask: Do you think we should seek God’s kingdom some of the time, or all of the time? (Let kids respond: All of the time.) That’s right, all the time! Especially right NOW! We don’t need to wait until we’re grown up. We can do it when we’re kids.

● Say: Now we’ve talked about a lot of ways we can get distracted from focusing on Jesus….but what if you tried to give your attention to him while on a roller coaster?! We’re going to watch a video and see someone try to focus on Jesus while being shot up hundreds of feet into the air!

● Video: KC Challenge and John 3:16● Say: So while that video was pretty crazy and hilarious,

there’s a really important truth they talked about. Jesus is God’s son. He’s our rescuer and savior, and he died for us, so that we could live with him forever! If you think that’s a good reason to seek him first before anything else, give someone a high five! (Let kids respond.)

● Pray: God, you’re always here to help us focus on you. We want to spend time with you right now, as kids, and seek your kingdom first. We love you. Amen!

● Say: Now is the perfect time to seek Jesus first and give all our attention to him: through worship! Let’s stand, sing and dance to show Jesus how much we love him, and give ALL our attention to him!

Goal: Kids will (1) Retell the story of Mary and Martha (2) Understand the importance of spending time with Jesus and (3) Identify how to give their time to Jesus in their own lives.

Why? Jesus wants to be close to us, and that means we need to spend quality time with him. Sometimes we can get caught up in the trivial things though, like Martha.

Tip: Describe to kids how you personally spend time with Jesus. Do you like to write in a journal? Pray? Sing to him? Make it relatable for them, so they can understand how they can do it too.

REVIEW THE STORY1. What did Martha do when Jesus came over? (she cooked, cleaned and didn’t spend

time with Jesus)2. What did Mary do? (She spent time with Jesus)3. What do you think was Jesus’ favorite food? If you were having dinner with Jesus at

your house, what would you talk about with him?4. What’s the most important thing we should focus on? (Jesus)5. Do we have to wait to focus on Jesus, or can we do it now? (Now!)6. What can we do right now to focus on Jesus/spend time with him? (Talk to him,

worship him, love others and be kind, come to Kids’ Club, tell others about God, etc.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL*You’ll be hiding images as part of today’s activity.

● Tell kids that they’re going to make a picture, but first, they’ll have to SEEK something to make it!

● Have kids put their heads down and close their eyes (make sure no one is peaking!) ● Go around the room and hide the “I can seek Jesus now” papers around the

room. Once you’ve hidden them all around the room (in relatively easy places to find), let kids go looking.

● Set out markers on the table when kids come back.● Read it aloud with kids (“I can seek Jesus now”)● Tell kids to think of one way they can seek Jesus and focus on him this week. Then,

draw a picture of it on the front or back of their paper.

Give kids a coloring page. If you still have extra time, play Bingo again!
