February 24, 2019 SCOUT SUNDAY Bill Berg, Charter Organizational Representative Scouting at Oak Grove United Methodist Church The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. In early 1950, members of the Oak Grove Men’s Fellowship saw a need to bring this type of program into our community. The Boy Scouts of America granted a charter to Oak Grove Methodist on May 31,1950. Since that time thousands of youth have learned important life skills through Scouting at Oak Grove. That great tradition continues through our four chartered Scouts BSA units. As of February 2019, for the first time in its 100+ year history, the iconic program of the Boy Scouts of America is open to both young men and young women, enabling all eligible youth ages 11-17 to earn the Eagle Scout rank using the same curriculum as the Boy Scouts program. Scouts BSA troops are single gender – either all girl troops or all boy troops. On Scout Sunday we honor our history of Scouting at Oak Grove and the great program it continues to be. We celebrate the many youth and families who have been positively impacted by our Scouting ministry over the last 69 years! 69 Years of Adventure, Leadership, Service, and Personal Growth Listed below are our Pack, Troops, and Crew membership numbers and adult leaders. Parents of middle and high school students are invited to spend an evening exploring the range of social media and screen behaviors among adolescents – from thehealthy to the downright worrisome.

• Why are young people drawn to social media and screens in the first place?• What are some effects of non-stop digital immersion on developing brains? • How can parents spot concerning phone habits (and mental health impacts) when staring at the device is the new normal?

We will conclude with practical measures for increasing face-to-face engagement with peers and family for guiding your teen toward greater emotional wellbeing and social contentment. Our speaker, Eliza Segell, is a licensed counselor with Care and Counseling of Georgia and a program director for social-behavioral research at Emory School of Nursing.

Creating Safe Spaces in an Anxious Digital World

Rev. Lindsay Geist, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, will be leading a four-week class at Oak Grove entitled Reset Your Child’s Brain: End Meltdowns, Raise Grades and Boost Social Skills by Reversing the Effects of Electronic Screen-Time. The class will meet four consecutive Sundays, 4-5 p.m. in Room 203 (Discoverers) starting February 24. Cost is $25 per participant (not per couple). The study is written by Dr. Victoria Dunckley, M.D., a child psychiatrist specializing in child development issues. Dunckley says many of the behavioral and learning issues parents face stem from electronic screen-time. The course is intended to be a four-week behavior modification plan for parents and children. Registration is limited (ogumc.org).

PARENTING CLASS: Managing Screen Time

Starts Sunday, Feb. 244 - 5 p.m. Room 203 Oak Grove will welcome a refugee family

Please sign up online (ogumc.org) for the items you can donate. Please fill in the descrip-tion of furniture. Donations may be brought to the church with the exception of furniture. Donors must store furniture until the family apartment is available at which time it can be picked up or delivered. The High School Youth had a great Ski Retreat this weekend! We took 27 students and 6 adults to Winterplace in West Virginia. We were greeted with fresh snow on Saturday morning, and our students enjoyed having a big snowball fight. The group had a great time skiing and snowboarding on the fresh snow! For many of our students, this was their first time experiencing the sport. It was a joy to see them experience the struggle of learning something new, falling and getting right back up. By the end of the weekend most of them had learned the basics and were able to enjoy the slopes. We are also very happy to report that outside of a few bumps and bruises, no one was injured. We were extremely blessed by the devotions that our Student Leadership Team shared with their peers and thank them for the time and effort they put into planning their lessons before the trip! The youth and volunteers would like to thank everyone at Oak Grove for theirprayers and support!

Why Scouting? For more than 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to try new things, provide service to others, build self-confidence, and reinforce ethical standards. Scouting has helped mold the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes and, through more than a century of experience, understands that helping youth puts us on a path toward a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.Scouting, with programs for young men and women, helps meet these six essential needs of the young people growing up in our society:• Mentoring• Lifelong Learning• Faith Traditions• Serving Others• Healthy Living• Building Character

Scout Sundayat Oak Grove United Methodist ChurchFebruary 24, 2019

Foundations of ScoutingScout Oath: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.Scout Mission: The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

General Commission on United Methodist MenCross and Flame Award

Darwin ToddDarwin is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster for both Scouts BSA Troop 77 and Scouts BSA Troop 177. His tenure with Scouting began when his two sons came up through the ranks of Cub Scout Pack 577. Darwin is a Wood Badge graduate – Scouting’s highest level of adult training. For the last year and a half Darwin has overseen the New Scout program with Troop 77. He is now offering his Scouting experience and passion to help with the newly formed Troop 177 for girls. Scouting is a family affair for the Todd family. Darwin’s sons, Duncan and Henry, are both active members for Troop 77 for boys and his daughter, Violet, is a charter member of Troop 177 for girls. Janice, Darwin’s wife, is an active Troop committee member.Darwin indicated his favorite thing about Scouting is that it teaches the values of good citizenship, self reliance and simply being a good person who understands the value of helping others. He said, “And you get to do fun things along the way! I appreciate that I have gotten to do things like whitewater rafting, zip lining and backpacking in some beautiful places.” In his spare time Darwin enjoys reading and gardening. Darwin and his family attend Buckhead Church. Thank you and congratulations Darwin!

The Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting of the General Commission on United Methodist Men recognizes men and women who give unusual amounts of time and energy in dedicated service with children and youth. The Cross and Flame program gives

recognition to adult leaders who have given exceptional service in the use and promotion of programs for young people. This year we are proud to have two recipients of the Cross and Flame Award from our Scouting ministry.

Chris is considered to be one of our most active Pack 577 adult leaders over the past five years. An Eagle Scout himself, his love of Scouting shows through in everything he does, whether it's teaching Scouting skills at den meetings or leading fun outings and camping activities. He truly cares about ensuring all of our Cub Scouts enjoy the same quality of experiences that he enjoyed while in Scouting. When the Pack decided to start doing an annual Big Trip (e.g., Patriots Point and Space Camp), Chris stepped-up in a big way to organize these trips in addition to his responsibilities as a den leader. Chris enjoys Scouting with his two sons Sam (Webelos II), Will (Wolf), and his wife Sara (Assistant Cubmaster and Wood Badge graduate). Chris is a licensed pilot and enjoys flying when he can find the time. The Hendersons are active members of Perimeter Church. Thank you and congratulations Chris!

The United Methodist Church acknowledges Boy Scouts of America as contributing to the church’s goals in its ministry with children and youth. Our wonderful scouting program at Oak Grove would not exist except for the numerous adults who step

forward to volunteer their time and share their God-given gifts and talent.

Chris Henderson

Journey to Excellence Award – Gold LevelCongratulations to Pack 577, Troop 77 and Crew 77 for achieving the Journey to Excellence Award – Gold Level! Each year, Scouting recognizes successful units with the “Journey to Excellence” awards. This is earned by Scouting units that effectively plan their activities, successfully recruit new youth and adults, provide training for leaders, offer a number of short and long-term camping opportunities, and engage in local service projects. Only the top 10% of units is awarded the Gold Level! Way to go!
