Year 10 Activities/Camp
Last Sunday all Year 10 girls went to Sawtell Caravan Park for 3 days to develop better bonds with each other and to look at options for our futures. We focussed mainly on workshops such as careers and Rock and Water, but also did activities like hair braiding, craft and music. All of us enjoyed the beach walk and the swims in the pool to cool down after a hot day. Kellie and Bev came along from “SHINE” to run a hair and skin workshop where we all gained tips on how to look good and look after ourselves. Megan came in and taught us how to do hair wrapping on each other. On the second night, we all enjoyed dinner at Wholly Cow Café and later that night we completed a challenge where we had to find out two new things about our peer group. On our last morning Mr Holding our new Principal, came to visit and judged our Master Chef morning tea, handing out special awards engraved by Miss Lackey.
While us girls were at camp, back at Bellingen the Year 10 boys enjoyed a day of special activities, including career education, health talks and a fun game of bubble soccer.
Some of the girls celebrated their birthdays on the Camp.
I would like to say a big thank you on behalf of the Year 10 girls to Sandy our School Counsellor, Ms Gorman, Ms Weeks and Amy from Nortec for contributing their time to make this camp happen. We all had great fun, learned more about our peer group and have a better idea about planning our future. We would love to have another camp soon! Thank you.

Students –v- Staff Volleyball
Students and Staff recently held a volleyball match which saw the students take out the game with a win of 25-20 – a very close tussle. Two of the students playing were selected in the Mid North Coast Combined High Schools Team (see Sport News). Staff are contemplating going into serious training to brush up on their skills and possibly call for a re-match later in the year.
From the Principal
Last week we had a great day at the swimming carnival. Those students who
braved the weather looked to have enjoyed themselves along with the staff.
Mrs Hoy has already started organising the Zone swimming team and will
present winners with their trophies at an upcoming assembly. There was some
confusion at the start of the day about if the Carnival was going ahead. To help
resolve this and better communicate, when we have major breaks in routine
such as this or a flood event we will SMS and email a message to parents. This
will only help you if you ensure our contact details for you are up-to-date.
There is information on how to do this in this Newsletter.
It is that time of year when I would like you to consider paying your children’s
school contribution and course fees as soon as possible. The school
contribution helps with purchasing of resources across the school while course
fees go directly to purchasing consumables that your child will be using in the
class. Remember the school contribution is not compulsory and the course fee
should be given first priority. If any parent needs help with these costs,
uniform, books etc., we have student assistance. I do need a parent signature
on a request form for this to be processed. Don’t hesitate to call me personally
if you would like to discuss student assistance in confidence or contact our
Front Office. Invoices detailing course costs etc. will be posted out shortly.
Thanks to the many parents who have already made these payments.
Finally, a reminder about students who are using mobile phones - they can be
very distractive and when used inappropriately cause problems between
students. The policy is that students are not to use them during class time.
There are teachers who give students in their class permission if the phone is
being used, to access internet information that relates to the class work at
hand. etc. If a student uses a phone in class without permission the teacher
has been instructed by me to confiscate the phone for the remainder of the
day. The school will take responsibility for any loss or damage while in our
care. The phone will then be returned at the end of the day. If this occurs a
second time the phone may be kept and returned to the parent. Parents can
contact the Front Office during class time if important messages need to be
delivered or an emergency occurs. I would ask you to have a conversation with
your child about this policy and reinforce with them the importance of
complying.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
7pm - Monday 10 March 2014
Bellingen High School Staff Common Room
All Welcome!
Years 7 and 8 BRONZE Booklet System
A trial of the BRONZE Booklet Reward System will occur with Years 7 and 8 in Semester 1 2014.
Every student in Years 7 and 8 will be issued a BRONZE Booklet. Students are to have their BRONZE Booklets on their desk during each lesson.
Teachers of Years 7 and 8 will be issued a BHS BRONZE stamp. Teachers can give a BRONZE stamp to students for outstanding achievement or effort during class. In Week 5 and 10 of each school Term, students will also be able to claim a BRONZE stamp (from Ms Weeks or Ms Panaretos) for consistently wearing their uniform.
When a student collects 20 BRONZE stamps he/she can take their BRONZE booklet to their Year Advisor and receive a BRONZE Award (this will be added to the other BRONZE Awards a student obtains and will go towards SILVER and GOLD). Students will also receive a ticket into the draw which will take place at the last formal Assembly of each Term.
The BRONZE Award will be recorded by the Year Advisor and this will be added to other BRONZES.
If a BRONZE Booklet is lost or misplaced students need to see their Year Advisor for a replacement.
The BRONZE Award system will be evaluated in Week 7, Term 2. Your feedback about the system would be much appreciated. After this trial has been evaluated, it is expected that the BRONZE Booklet Reward Program will be rolled out to all year groups.
Gold and Silver Excursions
The Gold Excursion to the Gold Coast this year is on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd December and our Silver Excursion is also to the Gold Coast and will occur on Tuesday 2nd December.
We are again running our "lay-by" system. If you think you will be up for some costs, whether it is a major excursion or similar thing, you can pay the activity off gradually. If for some reason your child does not go on the Gold Excursion and it is before the forfeit of deposit date, then we will refund your money. If you wish to take advantage of the "lay-by" system, go to the Front Office, nominate the activity and make your payment - now is a good time to start.

Sport News Bellingen High Swimming Carnival
The annual Bellingen High School Swimming Carnival was held on 5th February
in wet and cool conditions. Many of our students braved the water and
competed eagerly to do their best. As always there were some outstanding
performances as the stronger swimmers rose to the top.
There will be about 20 swimmers going on to the MNC Zone Carnival on
Tuesday 4th March in Coffs Harbour.

Volleyballers make their mark!
For the first time in many years Bellingen High School entered the NSWCHS Boys
Volleyball competition. The competition was held in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday, 11th
February with four teams attempting to get through the competition as Mid North
Coast champions. The boys played some great volleyball at times, however, were a
little inconsistent when it really mattered. They were narrowly defeated in all their
games but did show that they will be a force to be reckoned with next year, as the
core of the team was from Years 10 and 11.
There were some very good performances, which saw three players being nominated
for a possibles/probables game for Mid North Coast selection. When the final team
was announced two of our boys, Andrew Trist and Jonty Neaves were named in the
team. Brie Thomas also trialled for the girls team and was successful in being
selected.
This was a great result for
our young volleyballers and
hopefully will see, not just
the boys team, but also a
girls team playing in this
competition in future years.

TRANSITIONAL JOURNEYS
GIRLS WALKING INTO WOMANHOOD PROJECT
(Ages 14 – 17) April 4thth – 13
th2014
This project is endorsed by Steve Biddulph and written about in his book ‘Raising Girls’ (2013).
What does it mean to be a young woman in these times?
This valuable and life-affirming experience works beyond social background, age, academic or creative
disposition and is open to all young women 14-17.
Carrying on our backs all we need to survive for nine days, taking no digital technology, make up,
mirrors or worries about what to wear or how to look, we traverse the wild landscape. There is a
period of disorientation as these props sink from view but then the beauty and richness of the wild
environment begins to replace them. The wild landscape becomes a perfect place to honour and reflect
upon the nature of becoming a woman.
The purpose of this journey is to help young women to find deep roots and nourishment for their
lifetime as women. Fireside talking, sculpture, walking, journaling into the metaphors of landscape and
periods of silence open the girls to seeing the world directly as it is; complex and interconnected with
their own bodies, with rhythms they can learn from and peace they can rest in.
‘Transitional Journeys’ have been developed by Kym Pitman and are supported by Million Star Hotel
Outdoor Arts and Adventure.
Cost per person is $1300 and includes all facilitation, transport, some equipment, all food (except
breakfast), and follow up sessions.

Bellingen High School Uniform Code
Bellingen High School asks all parents to send their children to school neatly dressed in correct uniform. The following is acceptable uniform at Bellingen High School:
GIRLS: YEARS 7-10 ● White button front blouse or polo shirt with collar (no advertisements) ● Blue tartan skirt or royal blue shorts or denim shorts (not more than 10 centimetres from the knee - see picture) ● Dark blue slacks or blue jeans of an acceptable length ● Dark blue jumper and/or school jacket (no hoodies) ● Black shoes, white socks ● Acceptable sports shoes

Unacceptable dress for Bellingen High School:
Stretch skirts (this is not negotiable). Girl’s shorts that are too short. Ripped clothing Singlets, string shoulder tops as shirts, sleeveless shirts Low cut necklines or armholes, blouses/shirts that are indecent in a school
environment; midriff tops (see skin, not in) Slogans or pictures excepting brand names (as in small pocket sized logo) No underwear as outwear (e.g. petticoats). Hoodies Coloured ties Long coloured / striped socks Sandals, crocs, thongs, high heels, ugg boots or slippers
Students wearing unacceptable dress will be either asked to change into school clothing or sent home.
Safety: NO long hanging bracelets, necklaces or earrings, excessively loose garments in practical subjects and sports activities.
Establishing and maintaining safe working environments is fundamental to the work of teachers. Footwear is an important safety item. Good soles provide a sound grip on the floor preventing accidents from occurring. Footwear can also protect feet from mechanical or chemical damage. DEC policy clearly states that it is mandatory that students carrying out practical activities using chemicals or equipment in schools wear enclosed leather footwear. This includes all Science, Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes.
Leather shoes can now be purchased for as little as $20. Leather skate shoes and leather joggers are now readily available trendy options other than the traditional school shoe.
We urge parents to provide their children with leather upper shoes so that we can meet our OH&S obligations.
Remember that if students are out of uniform they are
required to bring a note from home AND/OR see
the Deputy Principal for a red uniform slip.
