INSIDE THIS ISSUE

February 2019 Volume 12 Issue 2 1

Poet Mary Oliver (who was

awarded both the Pulitzer Prize and the

National Book Award, among other

honors) died on January 17. She had

long been regarded as one of the best

poets in our country, known for her

love of the natural world. Mary Oliver

drew a wide and diverse following (me

included) though divided critics. Some

said that her poetry was too simple or

predictable, too easy to read or quote or

interpret. As an aside, it’s interesting

(and maddening) that some critics be-

lieve poetry has to be complicated in

order to be deemed worthy.

It was one of my high school

English teachers, Mrs. Khoury, who

taught our class to love poetry. She

taught us to read poems multiple times

if they’re hard to understand (and to not

be embarrassed for needing to do so.)

What helps our comprehension is read-

ing poems aloud. Poems aren’t just

meant to be preserved on a page, but

heard—the words take on life when we

recite them. (Mrs. Khoury also was a

huge fan of country music and claimed

that no one can fully appreciate country

unless you’ve had a broken heart!) At

least we could agree on our love of po-

etry! Anytime someone has said that

they don’t like poetry, my response is

always to ask if they’ve ever read Mary

Oliver. She had a way of writing that

can speak to just about anyone, making

poetry accessible and deeply moving.

So in the midst of the winter

chill, here’s a few favorite lines from

Mary Oliver’s poetry that can help get us

through, and may she rest in peace:

-To live in this world you must be able

to do three things: to love what is mor-

tal; to hold it against your bones know-

ing your own life depends on it; and

when the time comes to let it go, to let it

go. (from “In Blackwater Woods”)

-Tell me, what is it you plan to do with

your one wild and precious life? (from

“The Summer Day”)

-Every year, and every year the hatch-

lings wake in the swaying branches, in

the silver baskets, and love the world. Is

it necessary to say any more? (from

“Goldfinches”)

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Lauren

When people pledge to our church and specify that money will go to our Mission funds, the Mission and Witness Ministry distributes those funds throughout the year. One end of the year donation was made to assist with programs through the Tarakeswar Christian Welfare Association in India. Our gift ended up sponsoring a free medical clinic at Narayanpur where 67 patients were treated at a free clinic.

Medical care is not readily available in this impoverished part of the world, so thanks to your generosity some of our friends in India received medical care.

Thank you for your generosity!

Super Bowl Sunday Snack Drive

The Ministry of Mission & Witness will be holding our annual Super Bowl Sunday Food Collection

on February 3rd.

Instead of collecting Soup this year for the Food Bank, we will be collecting non-perishable, single serve snacks

(preferably peanut free). These items will be donated to the school snack pantries at CES and JJIS for social

workers to give to students (grades K-5th) unable to bring a snack from home.

If you recall, our 2018 Summer Mission was collecting snacks for these schools. Working together with VBS

families, CFC delivered over 700 individual snack items to the schools. Our donations were greatly appreciated;

the need is high however, and both schools’ pantries are depleted already.

Some suggested items include Goldfish crackers, Teddy Grahams, pretzels, popcorn, fruit cups, applesauce, juice

boxes and shelf stable milk (regular or chocolate). Bins will be placed in the sanctuary for your donations, or

you can drop them off in the church office during the week.

Let’s rally for Team CFC to stock up the snack pantries with needed items for our Colchester children.

Thank you!

Joan Frantzen, Shelly Hirsch, Laurie Gerundo, Susan Sanford, and Todd Simonds
