On Scene with IBEW Local 1260

IBEW Local 1260 Unit 8 members (Hawaii Electric Light - Hawaii Island) were among 200 union volunteers from 18 Unions who donated their time and money for the “Labor of Love” project at Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School in Hilo. Each year the Hawai‘i State AFL-CIO’s Labor Community Services Program selects a Hawai‘i Public School as a beneficiary of the program.

Total donations for the Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School project is estimated to be over $64,000. The “Labor of Love” saw volunteers install new carpeting in the school’s library, put up 40 new bulletin boards, painted bathrooms, re-striped parking lots, and various other work across other parts of the campus. The donations will also allow four new basketball systems to be installed soon. In addition to campus improvements, the project will also make contributions to the school’s academic and achievement program.

Business Manager/Financial Secretary Russell Takemoto thanks all those who donated money and volunteered time to make this year’s “Labor of Love” a success, and especially the members of Local 1260 for their sacrifice and for helping to give back to the community.

My name is Michael Ching. I joined the Local 1260 staff last December. It is my privilege to be a part of your union, and I look forward to working with you, our staff, and Business Manager Russell Takemoto. I was born and raised in Honolulu and recently moved back after living in Oakland, California for the past 29 years. I am a licensed attorney in both CA & Hawaii and have been practicing law for nearly 19 years. During that time, my practice focused on various aspects of litigation in both the federal and state courts of California and Hawaii, as well as administrative proceedings before the California Department of Fair Housing and Employment. In signi-ficant part, I handled labor and employment disputes in-

My name is Joel Duldulao and I joined the Local 1260 staff in August. If I could summarize my first few months on the job it would be: wow! To serve and represent you requires so much more than what you see. There are so many chal-lenges that have given me a new perspective of both man-agement and members. I am definitely impressed with the tirelessness and transparency which guides our staff every day. I became a union member in 2001 as a Meter Reader at Hawaiian Electric. In 2003, I started as a Senior Helper, pro-gressed through the Lineman apprenticeship and became a Lineman at the Waiau baseyard in 2007. I also spent a brief time in the Substation department and as a Lineman at the Ward avenue baseyard from 2010 to 2012. Inspired by the

Upon graduation from law school, I was an associate at Alborg, Veiluva & Cannata LLP in Walnut Creek, California. In 2006, I was a partner in Cannata, Ching & O’Toole LLP in San Francisco, California before founding Ching & Yamamoto LLP with a practice in Oakland, California and Ho-nolulu, Hawaii. I have been married to my wife for 8 years. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, golfing, spending time with family and friends, and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

turbulent events that lead to the trusteeship of our Local Union, I became actively involved in the intricacies of how our Local was operated. My interest was recognized when I was voted to be Unit 1 Chairperson and when I was asked to serve as part of the negotiating team for the recent HECO-HELCO-MECO contract negotiations. I have been married to my wife, Jennifer, for 15 years and we have 2 boys, Jake and Jaxon. Our family is very active in several ministries at West Oahu Christian Church, where we have been members for many years. During what little free time I have, you can find me surfing wherever there’s waves, cooking, playing video games, or watching Hawaii football.
