When talking about Orben, Ms. Harris states, “It gives him the opportunity to socialize and have in-depth conversations about subjects he excels in.” Working side-by-side with others, Orben has shared his ideas and skills to build a paper cup tower that will support a tennis ball. He has also experienced the dynamics involved in propelling a “coffee can racer” down the hallway, and the need to have a steady hand as part of a three-person group as they worked together to reflect a point of light from three mirrors to a target on the wall. Orben shared, “I get to race can cars and practice measuring length and width.” These fun and challenging hands-on experiments provide an opportunity for students of all levels to experience science together. When asked what is his favorite part of Science Olympiad, Orben said, “I like that we get to do Science, and I’ve made new friends. Sometimes making friends is hard.” SPECIAL OLYMPICS TRACK AND FIELD: Track and Field season begins February 5, 2018. It is not too late to join! As a part of this class, the parent educators shared websites and resources that are beneficial for students and families. Here are some great websites and how they can assist your student at home: • Read Works: www.readworks.org; Reading comprehension passages with a wide variety

of topics, ranging in levels from Kinder – 12th. Reading comprehension passages are structured similar to STAAR reading passages. It is great practice for all students!

• Khan Academy: www.khanacademy.org; All grade level math comprehension. Teaching broken down into steps. Khan academy has a student portal, parent portal, and teacher portal.

• Read A GoGo: www.readagogo.com; Kinder-12th grade reading activities that focus on

reading, thinking, and repeat reading with comprehension questions. • www.tutor.com/military - computer based, one-on-one live tutoring program for military

families. • Math Center – The Math Center (through Killeen ISD) is not an interactive website, but for

students, grades 5th and above, free Math tutoring is available at the Jackson Professional Learning Center – Monday through Thursday 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. in rooms 1,2, and 3.

The Parent Resource Room is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 -5:00 p.m. Within the Parent Resource Room, we have a library of resources that can be checked out, pamphlets and other handouts that could benefit your student, and computers for you to research or create resources for your student. The Parent Resource Room creates and houses special education binders for new to special education and new to Killeen ISD families*. These binders contain resources from the school district and from local/stage agencies, contact pages, special education acronyms, the most recent schedule of parent workshops, and a place to store your special education paperwork! *For families who are not new to special education or new to Killeen ISD, all reproducible pages can be found on the parent educator webpage under Parent Resources > Parent Binders > Binder Resource Pages. We provide multiple monthly classes for parents and families, as well as will create personalized/individualized meetings to accommodate your specific needs. If typical business hours do not work for you, we can accommodate our time with your schedule. If there is anything we can do for you, or if there are questions we can help you find answers to, please reach out to us. We are here to assist you in any way we can!
