Plant Name: Chiloschista parishii

Owner’s comments:

Housing: The Chiloschista is a miniature sized hot to warm grow-

ing orchid. It is hung midway in a small bush house with 70%

shade cloth on top and 50% on the sides. The house receives only

a few hours of direct sun in the afternoon. No cooling or heating

system is used.

Feeding: The plant is sprayed fortnightly with full strength Orchid

Boost Regular Feed Blend 10N, 10P, and 10K. As it is basically

leafless being a mass of roots I err on the side of caution with this

mixture of worm, seaweed and fish.

Watering: Due to its exposed root system this orchid is watered

with town water and misted by hand held hose twice per day in

summer, once in winter.

Potting Medium: This orchid is mounted on wood as it seems to

prefer a flat surface to cling to.

Any Other Cultural Notes: The flower stem emerges from the

centre of the root mass with the dainty yellow flowers long lasting

(fewer flowers this time than last).

Editorial

This month we have drifted back to the usual format for page 1, with photos of the present committee members, any

problems, you now know what we all look like and who to approach, with one correction Tiny Law will not be on the

committee this year. Page 2 the bad news about the upcoming shows, there is no guest speaker for February as it is our

Annual general Meeting, all positions will be vacated and the election of committee members will proceed. The committee

notes for February, Page 3 has the minutes from the January meeting, Page 4 has the benching results for January and Page 5

has the photos of the winning plants, Page 6 has Barry’s Column for the January benching and info about the two sausage

sizzles at Bunnings Underwood. Page 7, has the Saturday Cultural Information Meeting, also the news about the stocks of

bark, Judges for the February meeting and a little bit of humour, on page 8 Barry’s Column for the October benching last year

which was misplaced. Page 9 the sale of the late Nick Woolley’s orchid collection and info about the March Orchid Fair at

Beenleigh Show Grounds.

We have agreed to put on a display at the BOS show, set up is on the 31st March.

The Mothers Day display at Centro is a goer, setup will be on the Wednesday before Mothers day which is on May 14th and

run till the Saturday afternoon

Some Plants Tabled at the January Meeting.

Summer usually brings forth quite a number of

blooming multi-floral Paphiopedilums than with other

seasons, however, on the meeting night only five plants

were tabled these presenting from three to five blooms

per spike, said spikes were adequately tall enough to

prevent even the longest of pendulous petals from

touching the bench top. The flower colours ranged

from yellow through to those of predominantly green

tones with most being spotted and/or striped in darker

hues.

I singled out but one to comment on, this being labelled

Paph. Saint Swithin x Paph. rothschildianum, which

was registered in 1988 as Paph. Gary Romagna. It

carried three blooms, their base colour being a pale

yellow tone that was darker to the rear of the dorsals

and upper regions of the pouches. The spike was just

tall enough to present the long, straight, more angled

rather than strictly pendulous petals clear of the foliage,

these segments were spotted to their basal regions in a

dark red-brown tone, this appearing in striping out to

their tips and appearing on the sepal faces as

longitudinal stripes, this effect showing through to the

reverse thereof. The staminodes were of a reasonably

distinct figure 7 shape, a feature inherited from the

Paph. rothchildianum parent that accounts for the bulk

of its ancestry, said segments had lines of dark, short

hairs. Lower halves of the pouches were a pale

somewhat off-white tone, the upper area brushed pale

brown this overlaid with mahogany lines, these merging

together in places to give a tessellated effect.

Among those of singular floral presentation was a Paph.

Joyce Hasegawa, the label informing the parents were

Paph. delenatii and Paph. emersonii, its sepals and

petals were predominantly white with suggestion of the

palest dusting of pink, the pouch was a rosy tone with a

darker band in this colouration around the edge of its

opening and boasting a stataminode of fairly large

proportions in relation to bloom size, it shared some of

the pouch colour over which resided red-brown eyes,

created by a vertical, yellow, central stripe.

Species monopodial featured a clean well grown plant

of Angcm. magdalenae and it’s probably the same plant

I’ve made these comments about in the past seasons,

and if so, it continues to be a credit to the growers

cultural prowess. It presented up to three blooms and/or

buds over three spikes on a compact plant of many fan-

shaped growths.

A very nice dendrobium of spatulata persuasion was

Den. Genting Royal with two spikes carrying twenty

and twenty-four blooms which were of a predominantly

lemon-green tone except for segment basal regions

which were white. The blooms circled their spikes in

an evenly spaced fashion making for a desirable

display. As plants of this section tend to establish, with

time (maturity), larger proportions it is more than

probable that this well grown entity will do so too,

resulting in longer spikes with increased flower

numbers.

Vandaceous under 40mm contained a Perreiraara

(abbr. Prra.) Bangkok Sunset ‘Bright and Showy’,

whose blooms certainly upheld its varietal name, had a

spike that carried it’s blooms clear of the foliage

although not above same. Due, however, to its

constituent genera being somewhat prone to producing,

in the main, horizontal to drooping spikes, this spike

could have been trained upwards. It’s couple of dozen

small (at a guess about 20mm) bright and colourful

blooms were a accompanied by many buds, that

although not bunched at all, were non-the-less tightly

arranged around the spike. The tepal tips were a

reddish brown with yellow between these and their

white basal zones, the reverse tips of these segments

were, in contrast, a lighter hue to those of the interior

faces, while the bases were a pale creamy yellow.

Vandaceous Over 40mm had tabled a plant labelled (as

I read same) V. Lucky Man Udom, this was a semi-

terete type which was quite a tall plant, at a guess in

excess of 1.5 metres, with height being a common

growth factor encountered with terete Vandas which

since the 2011-13 Sander’s addendum, are now

classified as Papilionanthe for registration, which

suggests, given the semi-terete leaf form, that this plant

might be a Papilionanda if no other genus (or genera),

is involved. The plant bore one upright spike with the

flowers well spaced and evenly distributed around it;

although all the blooms were not above the foliage,

none appeared to be in contact with same. Said blooms

were of very good rounded, filled in shape particularly

when considering the general flower form of its terete-

leaved fore-bearers, base colour was a paleish tone this

overlaid with violet-blue tessellations with a small

amount of a yellowish hue to the ventral bases. I

endeavoured to clarify the plant name to hopefully

correct any misspelling, etc. on my part when copying

from label, but was unable to bring up any sort of a

match, even a close parallel. I was hoping to establish

to what extent the terete element was involved given the

distinct channelling of the foliage and the flower form

of the strap-leaf type.

Great news we have two Sausage Sizzles to do at Bunnings Underwood. Ken will be sending around the roster for volun-

teers at the next meeting. We require 4 persons 3 shifts a day. Give it some thought as this income eliminates us from going

around cap in hand seeking donations to run the Show.

The dates are Saturday 4th March and Saturday 22nd April, being on a Saturday the return to us should be reasonable.

The Elderly Irish Virgin In a tiny village on the Irish coast lived an old lady, a virgin, and very proud of it.

Sensing that her final days were rapidly approaching, and desiring to make sure every-thing was in proper order when she dies, she went to the town's undertaker (who also

happened to be the local postal clerk) to make proper "final" arrangements. As a last wish, she informed the undertaker that she wanted the following inscription en-

graved on her tombstone:

"BORN A VIRGIN, LIVED AS A VIRGIN, DIED A VIRGIN" Not long after, the old maid died peacefully. A few days after the funeral, as the under-taker/postal clerk went to prepare the tombstone that the lady had requested, it became quite apparent that the tombstone she had selected was much too small for the wording that she had chosen. He thought long and hard about how he could fulfil the old maid's final request considering the very limited space available on the small piece of stone. For days, he agonized over the dilemma, but finally his experience as a postal worker

allowed him to come up with what he thought was the appropriate solution to the problem. The virgin's tombstone was finally completed and duly engraved, and it read as follows:

"RETURNED UNOPENED"

Some Plants Tabled at the October 2016 Meeting.

In Vandaceous Over 40mm was a V. Thonglorsand x

V. (Pimchai Beauty x Lenavat) and was unable to locate any

grex registration to condense the title. It displayed ten

blooms that were well distributed around it’s upright spike;

these were of a lavender-mauve tone, their dorsals and petals

spotted red-brown, a similar hue appeared as tessellations to

the ventrals these so profuse as to cover their full surface.

Blooms were of about average size for this line of breeding

and of very good form.

A V. Thai Classic carried some sixteen blooms that were of

quite good shape, plus buds, these being well presented clear

of the foliage on an upright spike, they were of an orange to a

pale somewhat mustard (?) tone, the dorsals and petals

peppered with small reddish coloured spots.

Species Sympodial contained a Den. spectabile with one bulb

carrying two of the five spikes it displayed and presented

from fourteen to sixteen blooms each, all segments had wavy

edges, the tepals were spiralled with the tips of some curved

in odd directions, colour was of a predominantly yellow base

tone more intensly so to lip mid-lobes while the side-lobes

were a little paler and all lined red, base of tepals brushed and

lined a reddish brown hue.

The Dendrobium section featured a Den. Mousmee, the rear

of it’s tepals were a bright lavender colouration this tone

being presented in a paler hue to frontal area of said

segments, the predominantly yellow lips having white tips,

blooms were carried on five spikes, some with in excess of

thirty. Most plants of this grex, in my experience, are large

growing and this entry was no exception.

Paphiopedilum (Hung Sheng Pulsar x Shin-Yi Apple) was a

maudiae type with a very broad dorsal for this Paph. section

this segment had the vertical striping encountered with many

of the maudiaes and with this bloom the central stripes were

green with the outer and more numerous ones, being of a

dark red colour and also having lines existing out from the

sides and with a mauve flushing in between; these colours,

plus the patterning, also appearing to the reverse thereof, the

ventral (synsepal) being of similar colouring and patterning

but not as profuse. The petals were green with pale lavender

tips and sprinkled with dark wart-like spots while their edges

sported short dark hairs. Pouch was mahogany-red with

lines in a mesh like fashion that was barely dark enough to

show through, it’s basal area and interior heavily peppered in

small dark spots. The tall spike held the bloom well above

the pale green leaves which were blotched and lined dark

green in a mottled fashion.

Oncidiinae featured a Brs. Rex ‘Kyelles Star’ carrying two

spikes, one with fourteen blooms the other having nine and

five buds. The blooms were large and well balanced,

symmetrical and displayed the spidery form typical of this

genus. The green toned tepals were barred and blotched

brown, the lip mid-lobes were of an elongated arrow head

form, predominantly yellow with brown basal spotting. The

longest and most advanced spike was of arching habit, with

blooms displayed in a double ranked fashion alternating in a

well spaced manner which produced an exhibit that showed

exhibition type blooms need not always present broad

segments.

Also in Oncidiinae was an Oncostele Catonante Kiloan

presenting a tall spike with some thirteen branches and

carrying eighty to ninety blooms, the brownish tepals were

tipped yellow, the lip bases were the tepal colour with yellow

brown to mid-lobes with a yellow marking to their centres.

The lateral branches had been trained to create a flattened,

somewhat triangular form that presented as a quite

impressive exhibit.

This plant had been entered under its original title (as at

registration in 2002) being Adontecidium so with the demise

of Odontoglossum one could be led to consider to be a

straight Oncidium, but a check of the R.H.S. web-site

revealed it to be an Oncostele due presumably to some of the

previous Odontoglossums having already become

Thyncosteles before the abolition of Odentoglossum. A

confusing issue (for me at least) arose whereby the R.H.S.

has entered Colmanara (which involved Miltonia) as the

generic synonym when the original registered (hybrid) genus

was Odontocidium as to be verified in the corresponding

year’s (2002) ‘Sander’s addendum. A type somewhere

that’s carried through, or have I overlooked or not observed

other changes that had, for example, indeed introduced an

entity to Miltonia so as to bring about some interim change?

Perhaps sometime in the future I may delve into the issue

further.

Sale – Nick Woolley’s – Orchid Collection. Following the recent and unexpected passing of well known orchid identity Nick Woolley, instructions have been re-

ceived from his family to arrange for the disposal of his orchid collection.

Date of Sale: Saturday the 25th of February.

Venue: 89 Pine Mountain Road Brassall.

Time: 8.00am to 3.00pm.

No inspection of the plants will be permitted prior to 8.00am on the day of sale.

Terms of Sale: Cash only.

The orchids for sale are predominantly from the cattleya and dendrobium alliances.

Other genera including paphiopedilums, cymbidiums, sarcochilus, lycaste, stanhopeas, catasetums, vandas, epidendrums,

oncidiums etc. will also be for sale.

The orchids range in size from small seedlings to large plants in need of repotting.

Any plants purchased must be removed from the premises by the close of sale.

Participants are advised to bring their own boxes for the transportation of the plants purchased.
