What Men & Women Should Eat To Boost Brain Power

New research shows that men’s and women’s brains are different! Women produce more dopamine, which helps organization and focus. Men produce more serotonin, making them relaxed and less worried. While men and women need both serotonin and dopamine, there are foods you can eat to increase your levels of these brain chemicals.

WOMEN: Serotonin controls your sense of well-being; without it, you may experience depression and sleep disorders. Eating these foods can help increase your serotonin levels (for detailed info search the internet for a “serotonin diet”):

Protein: Three servings/day of foods like turkey, cheese, and pork.Veggies: Four cups/day of foods such as leafy greens and tomatoes.“Good” carbs: Garbanzo beans, blueberries, and sweet potatoes.Omega 3 fatty acids: Eggs, flaxseed (1 - 4 tbs/day), and salmon.Dark Chocolate (but not too much!): Consume 1.5 to 3 ounces (in moderation) of a bar that consists of at least 70 percent cocoa beans. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids, magnesium and copper, and enhances mood and energy levels.

MEN: Dopamine affects your focus, movements, and emotions. Eat more of these foods to increase your dopamine levels:

Protein: Replace some meat in your diet with healthier sources such as salmon and beans.Fruit: Eat more apples and bananas (even watermelon) weekly.Other essential foods: Eggs, beets, avocados, Brazil nuts, and sesame or pumpkin seeds.

Increased exercise and meditation also will help you raise serotonin and dopamine levels. Talk to your doctor about your particular dietary needs.

Word of the Month...Studies have shown your income and wealth are directly related to the size and depth of your vocabulary. Here is this month's word, so you can impress your friends (and maybe even fatten your wallet!)...

Spoonerism, noun

Meaning: a transposition of usually initial sounds of two or more words in a phrase. It was named after William Archibald Spooner, a nervous man who frequently made this mistake.

Sample Sentence: An example of a spoonerism is “You hissed my mystery lecture,” instead of “You missed my history lecture.”

Creative Excuses CareerBuilder.com reports that 28 percent of workers called in “sick” last year. Here are some of the excuses managers said they heard:

I just put a casserole in the oven.I accidentally got on a plane.I woke up in a good mood and didn’t want to ruin it.I got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store.

Things You Should Probably Clean/Replace Reusable grocery bags – 97% of people never wash them. It may be time to buy new ones!Trash cans – Sprinkle a little cleanser (like Comet) in the bottom to absorb spills and cover odors.Doormats – Wash with a hose. Better yet, ask guests to leave their shoes at the door.

Quotes To Live By...Do one thing every day that scares you.–Eleanor Roosevelt It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste. –Henry Ford The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made. –Groucho Marx

How To Get What You Want From Customer Service

Do you get frustrated when you talk to company customer service representatives? Here’s how to get what you want (if it’s reasonable):

STEP 1: Before explaining your situation...Be friendly. The rep may be more inclined to help someone who is courteous after dealing with rude people all day.Tell them the general nature of your problem. For example, you think you’ve been overcharged on your cell phone bill.Ask if they are the right person who will work with you to resolve the situation.

STEP 2: Explain your problem... Share what happened (with specific numbers/facts) and what you’d like to have happen, such as a refund or some added service. If you’ve had the problem before, ask them to look up your record.Be reasonable. Ask for instead of demanding a resolution.

STEP 3: Address their response...If what you want is “against their policy,” ask about options.Don’t make threats. Ask if there’s someone else you can talk to about it, such as a supervisor. When you talk to the supervisor, don’t criticize the rep you just talked to. Explain what happened and ask for their assistance.

If you only get an apology, thank the representative anyway. Who knows? You may get a call back. Go ahead and research other companies to work with. If you are completely dissatisfied, report the company to the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) so the problem doesn’t happen to someone else.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!Thank You! Thank You!

Thanks to all of my clients and friends who support my practice and graciously referred me to your friends and neighbors! Rather than pester people with unwanted calls and visits, I build my business based on the positive comments and referrals from people just like you. I couldn't do it without you!

To determine your bid, check other sites (like Expedia or Orbitz) for current rates. 3 Ways To Update Your Kitchen     Does your kitchen need a new look? Here are three ways to give it a makeover without spending a fortune.

1. Paint your cabinets and change your hardware. You may choose to hire a professional or paint your cabinets yourself. Search for “best way to paint kitchen cabinets” at www.hgtv.com/design/rooms/kitchens. When you buy new cabinet and drawer handles, take your old ones to the hardware store to ensure the new set matches the holes.

2. Add a backsplash. Again, have the job done professionally or do it yourself by checking out a YouTube video or searching for “how to install a tile backsplash” at www.lowes.com.

3. Swap your countertops. Estimate the cost of materials and installation by using www.homedepot.com/countertopestimate. Granite countertops can cost $100-$225 per square foot but you can spend less by looking at concrete, stainless steel, or laminate.

Real Estate Corner...Q. How can I make my home attractive to buyers?

A.  When selling your home, look at your home through a potential buyer’s eyes, and follow these steps to make it show well and receive a good offer:

Clean and repair. Your buyer’s first impression is from the street. Clean up the yard, the landscaping and check your exterior paint job. On the inside, shampoo the carpets, scrub the floors and clear off all the counters. Remove old wallpaper and paint the walls a neutral color. Fix things that need fixing, like squeaky doors, broken tiles etc.De-Clutter. Get rid of all that “stuff” you’ve accumulated in the garage, the backyard and the basement. And don’t forget the closets!“Stage” it to look like a model home. Put away your personal items and remove large pieces of furniture. Ask your REALTOR® for ways to “dress up” your home (candles, new linens etc.) to maximize your selling potential.

NOW THAT I’M HERE…WHAT NEXT

BEST SEDONA DAY HIKES There's a hike for everyone in Sedona; some are breathtakingly beautiful with panoramic vistas, others wind through

steep canyons where the only sound is the wind whispering through the Pinon pines. There are casual, shaded hikes

that follow the cool growth along Oak Creek, or you might want to push yourself on one that climbs up over the red

rocks to the towering heights where Kaibab limestone glints white in the sun.

Sedona's western canyons are great for sunsets. Just past Boynton Pass you can park at the Doe Mesa trailhead and

have a choice of two hikes: Doe Mesa is a moderate one hour ascent (3.6 mile round trip) to a plateau with great

views everywhere you look; it's across the street from Bear Mountain. This is no easy hike with an elevation gain

of 1,800 feet (6 miles return trip), but the locals will tell you it's the best trail around just bring lots of water and

sunscreen.

When it's hot, most of us head for Oak Creek Canyon. At Midgley Bridge you have your choice of three hikes.

The Huckaby Trail passes under the bridge and descends down to the creek where you can rest with your feet in the

chilly water. You can continue on the trail for another five miles to the trailhead on Schnebly Hill road, or just go

back to Midgley Bridge. The Wilson Canyon trail explores the wash upstream, following in the steps of pioneer

Richard Wilson who tracked a wounded Grizzly and was then promptly killed by the bear. And finally, the Wilson

Mountain trailhead also begins at the Bridge. Here you can ascend right up to the Ponderosa Pine forest that grows

on the Colorado Plateau 1,500 feet above, but be warned this hike is strenuous without much shade once you begin.

Even when you hike by yourself in the canyons of Sedona you won't feel alone. The town sits in the middle of 1.8

million acres of National Forest and has a healthy population of animals, including: bobcats, mule deer, javelina,

mountain lions and coyotes. For your best chances of an animal encounter, plan to be on the trails either around

sunrise or sunset. Many of the trails also pass by ruins or walls covered with rock art and petroglyphs because during

the time of the Sinagua, (500 AD and 1425 AD) there were as many as five thousand Indians living in the Verde

Valley and the deeper you go into the canyons the stronger their presence becomes.

Use our handy table of trails below to find a Sedona day hike that's right for you, depending on your level of fitness,

mood or timetable. You can choose a hike that will take you anywhere from a half-hour to a full day. These trails are

accessible and great for hiking year-round. Check out our Weather page for expected temperatures and precipitation

during your stay, but regardless of the weather, be sure to wear sturdy shoes, layered clothing, sunscreen and pack

plenty of water (1/2 to a full gallon of water per person) and tell someone (your hotel concierge, innkeeper, or non-

hiking travel companions) where you're going and when you expect to return.

SEDONA FOR ACTIVE SENIORS Time is the most valued asset of active seniors. You take the time to relax, enjoy and experience the joys of life’s

adventures that the work-a-day crowd simply does not have time for. A perfect setting for active seniors, Sedona is

surrounded by majestic red rocks and is hailed as one of the most beautiful places to visit in America.

There are over one hundred hiking trails in Sedona, from moderate to strenuous trails for the more experienced

hiker; in short, Sedona offers hiking for everyone. Along Oak Creek there are pathways and venues for quite

meditative moments or sharing a beautiful stroll with a hiking companion. High desert flora and fauna provide

excellent photographic opportunities, especially in the remote canyons and vistas overlooking Sedona and the Verde

Valley.

There are so many things to see and do for active seniors visiting Sedona. Jeep tours are at the top of almost

everyone’s list because they offer a range of Jeep tour experiences from relatively tranquil to exciting four-wheeled

rough rides; they’re a great way to see Sedona up close and personal. Did you know there were over fifty great

American western movies filmed in the greater Sedona area, many starring John Wayne? His most noteworthy

feature film was “Broken Arrow” and a Jeep tour to the films primary location is a fun-filled experience.

Page 7: February 2015 final

Are you a really active senior and an early riser? You may opt for a hot air balloon ride for a bird’s eye view of

Sedona’s red rocks. At the apex of your hot air balloon adventure, the vistas span the distance from Flagstaff to

Jerome and beyond. A Sedona sunrise from those heights is awe-inspiring and unforgettable.

Take the time to avail yourself to free concierge services offered at most Sedona hotels and resorts to enhance your

stay and assist with planning your daily activities to make the most of your visit to Sedona. No matter which choices

you make, be sure to bring plenty of water – about a gallon per person per day – sunscreen, a map and cell phone.

Also, it is wise to let someone know where you intend to venture.

There are several local attractions that are excellent day trips from Sedona, including Arizona’s premiere attraction,

the Grand Canyon, just two hours away along with a ride on historic route 66 in Williams on your return trip. From

your hub in Sedona, there are train rides taking you to remote canyons, a wild life preserve and a nearby casino for

your entertainment.

Taste-tempting treasures can be found among the variety of Sedona restaurants featuring world-class cuisines sure to

please the most discriminating diner. Sedona has something for everyone and with time on your side, we at

Sedona.net know that active seniors will appreciate the Sedona experience and return often.

Flagstaff Things to Do

Movies on the Square - Wizard of Oz - Summer 2010

Flagstaff is conveniently located to many major Northern Arizona attractions, from the Grand Canyon to

Sedona to the Painted Desert, and also has museums, galleries and numerous historic sites, making the

city a tourism destination for thousands annually:

Route 66 – Drive into town and you are quickly on historic Route 66, the “Mother Road” made famous by

the 1960s television series featuring Nelson Riddle’s iconic song “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66.”

Historic Downtown – At the heart of Flagstaff is this grid of cross streets featuring fine dining and shopping.

Historic Downtown features the “First Friday Artwalk.” You can enjoy movies and music at Heritage Square

on Aspen Avenue between Leroux and San Francisco during the summer. Many of the historic buildings

are marked with plaques showing what the buildings originally looked like and what their purpose was

during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tours of historic downtown are available through the city’s Visitor

Center or Pioneer Museum.

Grand Canyon, just 80 miles outside the city by car (Highway 180 to Highway 64, or Highway 89 to

Highway 64) or by train, via Williams on the Grand Canyon Railway. Bus tours and other private tour

companies provide transportation services to the canyon.

Arizona Snowbowl – Agassiz at Arizona Snowbowl is considered one of the expert ski runs in the

Southwest and is one of 30 trails, ranging from beginner to expert, at Flagstaff’s ski resort. During the

summer, you can still enjoy Arizona Snowbowl by hopping on its Scenic Skyride to the top. Views of both

downtown Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon can be seen on the summer ride. (928) 779-1951

Museum of Northern Arizona – Most of our southwest history and culture can be found at the Museum of

Northern Arizona (MNA), originally founded in 1928 as the repository for Native American artifacts and

natural history specimens from the Colorado Plateau. The museum has seven exhibit galleries, interactive

activities, storytellers and cultural interpreters. (928) 774-5213

through changing scenery into the Wupatki ruins. The areas around the ruins are still being studied in efforts

to discover other historical sites and information. (928) 526-1157.

Meteor Crater – The result of a violent meteor impact some 59,000 years ago, Meteor Crater, located 40

miles east of Flagstaff on I-40, reaches a depth of 550 feet. Considered the world’s best preserved meteor

crater site. Interactive discovery center and Astronaut Hall of Fame also featured. (928) 289-2362.

Wildlife – Just outside of Flagstaff are several animal attractions. Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde

is home to lions, tigers, jaguars, wolves, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and ostriches. Bearizona Wildlife

Park in Williams has black bears, bison, sheep, goats and wolves. At the Grand Canyon Deer Farm, you

can walk among the deer and let them eat right from your hand.

Riordan Mansion – Built in 1904 for two Riordan families, Riordan Mansion is an impressive reminder of

gracious living in a small, territorial logging town. The historic building is an Arizona treasure — a

remarkable example of Arts and Crafts style architecture featuring a rustic exterior of log-slab siding,

volcanic stone arches, and hand-split wooden shingles. The expansive home has forty rooms, over 13,000

square-feet of living area, and servant’s quarters. The Riordan residence was designed by the creator of

Grand Canyon’s El Tovar Hotel, Charles Whittlesey. The interior of the mansion is seen by guided tour only.

The tours last approximately one hour. Reservations are highly recommended and required for buses and

large groups. To make a reservation, call the park at (928) 779-4395.

for the Indigent. Exhibits reflect Flagstaff and northern Arizona history, as well as ranching, logging, and

transportation.

The Vineyards Bed and Breakfast is located in historic Page Springs, Arizona and offers an unforgettable and unique Southwest experience in the heart of Arizona wine country. Nestled in the greenbelt of Oak Creek and minutes from the Red Rocks of Sedona, The Vineyards Bed & Breakfast amenities include luxurious king bed suites, a full, home cooked breakfast served in our dining room overlooking neighboring vineyards, and two lush acres of property to explore. Amazing adventures are steps away: Oak Creek fishing/tubing, miles of off-road trails, horseback riding, birding and three distinct wineries (Page Springs Cellars, Javelina Leap Winery & Oak Creek Winery) all within a one mile radius. And the fun need not stop there! The Verde Valley Wine Trail continues in the nearby towns of Cottonwood and Jerome. Whether you seek an unsurpassed Arizona wine tasting experience, a Red Rock adventure or simply prefer to relax at this magical oasis, The Vineyards Bed & Breakfast offers it all.

Our B&B Journey (in a nutshell):

One cold, Midwest winter evening as we sat at the fireplace sipping on our Pinot Noir we asked ourselves why we continued to endure bitter winters. As the wine flowed we became even more prophetic with our questions: Why do we continue with the daily work grind? Where would we most like to live? What new career path could we take when we moved? Are we brave enough to give up our comfortable lifestyle and take the plunge? ….... You get the picture. The beginning of a wonderful new adventure had been born! First, we needed to decide where to start our new adventure. As people who love to travel we visited the Vere Valley often and fell in love with the beauty and versatile adventures that the area has to offer (not to mention the

awesome year-round weather). Next, we needed a realtor ready for the task of finding the perfect property in the perfect location with all of the requirements set forth by Tambrala – NOT an easy task. Tim McDaniels was the perfect realtor for the job! After a 2 year property search and another year of extensive TLC to the homes and the property, The Vineyards Bed & Breakfast is open for business!! As your personal Vineyards concierge, Tambrala can assist you with wine tours, day excursions, hiking adventures, planning the perfect Anniversary or Birthday get-a-way, ...… or coordinate a dream-come-true wedding in a magical location (she just happens to be a professional wedding coordinator as well). As people who LOVE music, we want to do everything to make sure our home is filled with music which is why we have a piano and guitars for our guests to use during their stay. Don’t be surprised if Bruce pulls out his guitar at the tiki bar and convinces you to join in on a jam session. Yes, we have a tiki bar at the pool to mimic that ‘tropical beach’ feeling that we love so much on our beach vacations. Our goal is to offer amazing memories filled with good friends, good food, music, ‘tropical’ breezes,

unforgettable Southwest experiences and gracious Midwest hospitality. We are excited to share our home with guests from all corners of the world and invite you to experience everything that The Vineyards Bed and Breakfast has to offer.
