Blue Ribbon Students!

Third, fourth, and fifth grade Hooper students have been busily preparing for the upcoming NJ Ask tests

utilizing an online program called Study Island. Students move through a series of math, language arts, and

science lessons and try to earn “Blue ribbons” by correctly answering most questions. Winning classes and

individuals for the past 2 months deserve a round of applause!

Fifth Grade “Hoops for Heart” Event Raises Money for American Heart Association

This year’s Hoops for Heart event took place on Tuesday, February 11th in the school gym. After fund-

raising and collecting pledges to benefit the American Heart Association, fifth grade students and

teachers participated in the annual physical competition.

Fifth grade students enjoyed watching Mr. Citta, Mrs. Kennedy, and their teachers compete in a wheelie

chair basketball shooting segment. Second was the “Knock-Out Challenge”, which involved all fifth grad-

ers in all classes. Class members were pitted against one another to see who could sink baskets quicker

than their opponents. The male and female winners from each class in the Knock-Out Challenge went on

to the “Hot Shot Blitz” round. In this championship round, players had 2 minutes to sink as many bas-

kets as they could from designated areas on the court. The more difficult the shot, the more points

awarded. When the points were totaled, fifth grade students Brandon Feigin and Julia Lamparello had

the high scores.

Fourth grade students will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart event in March, also benefitting the

American Heart Association.

CLASSROOM NEWS

“Different”,

By Josephine McKenna, grade 3

It doesn’t matter

If you’re different.

That’s good because…

You are your own person.

I hope you never change.

You’re perfect the way you are.

It’s always better to

Be creative.

Have a wild mind.

You’re better in your own way.

Persuasive Letters at Work

Mrs. Brattan's second grade class wrote persua-

sive letters to GALERIE, a toy and candy compa-

ny, back in November. The letters were written

to the company in the hopes that they would

make more of a discontinued stuffed ani-

mal. The creators from the company responded

with a very personal letter to the class and with

it came 25 stuffed bears for the children arriv-

ing just before the winter break! We would like

to thank the company for taking the time to

read and answer our letters and of course for

the generous gifts to our class!

Students in grades K-4 have the option to purchase a 2013-2014

yearbook. Featuring 60 full-color pages and photos of every class in the

school, this memory book is available for pre-order. Order forms have been sent home; the deadline to order is March

28th. No yearbooks will be sold in June.
