It looks as if we might have a quiet few weeks ahead of us in Grafham. Grafham Oil Syndicate Update Grafham's Oil Syndicate now has over 120 members and we are expanding into Perry, Great Staughton and Ellington to help households control heating costs, try and do our bit to reduce delivery truck car-bon footprints, and ensure larger orders to increase buying power. In our first 4 deliveries we have kept over £3,000 in the village! Remember it's free to join, just email Simon on

View from the Pew! It is a little late to wish you all a happy new year but we do have eleven months left and it promises to be a memorable one with the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee to look forward to. Quite possibly these two events will be celebrated in one way or another at All Saints.

Looking back a little, our Lights to Remember service in November raised £37.60 for Marie Curie Cancer Care for which they were very grateful. This service is much appreciated by those who have lost loved ones and wish to quietly reflect on their lives and light a candle in their memory.

In early December our Mince Pie and Coffee morning raised £344.60 for church funds. We were very pleased with the growing popularity of this event and we are extremely grateful to all those who helped beforehand, planning, making mince pies and table arrangements, plus a gor-geous Christmas cake which went to the lucky winner! Also to those who came and supported us on the morn-ing, enjoying a jolly time with friends and neighbours. We plan a repeat performance next year with perhaps even more attractions.

We began our worship in December with a special Family Service during which poems reflecting on Christ-mas were read by members of the congregation. Thank you Val for an excellent choice of poetry. In-deed, Alan, the Twelve Days of Christmas has certainly taken on a new meaning - you had us rocking in the aisles!

Our Carol Service, surrounded by festive arrangements

and red candles was as ever well attended. To hear the Christmas story read from the scriptures brings home to us each year what this season is all about. The day was marked by the presentation to Heather of a bouquet of flowers and vouchers in appreciation of her work in editing the Grafham Gossip which is much appreciated by us all. The

service was followed by mulled wine and Christmas cake which was much enjoyed and once again thanks to those able cake makers!

Carol singing around the village raised £247.48 for sAs funds (£213.04 last year) so thank you to all those who took part and an even bigger thank you to those who

put money in our pots as we went door to door. The singers were refreshed with mulled wine and mince pies afterwards to soothe their throats!

On Christmas Day we were glad to have Jonathan presiding as he also provided accompaniment for the hymns. Jonathan was also pleased to welcome a sizeable congregation to the Family

Service on New Years Day - well done those brave souls!

Looking ahead to February, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday the 22nd. During Lent there will be Eucharist services on Fridays at 12 noon around the Group followed by frugal lunches. The first of these will be at Ellington on Friday 24th February to which all are welcome. A list of further dates and locations will be available in the church nearer the time.

Some progress is currently being made towards finding a source of funding for our church restoration. We will keep readers posted with news but it will be a long proc-ess.

Since the Police Report for Neighbourhood Watch, the burglary below took place. It may be a warning for us all to be more cau-tious. Ed

Burglary We were burgled some time in the early hours of Jan 16th, between midnight and 5.30am; we live in Cedar Close. Our house was broken into, our car keys and briefcase contain-ing laptop taken and our car (Audi A6) stolen. The thieves moved another family car off the drive in order to get to the

Audi. A Grafham Resident

Attention dog walkers, walkers and Cyclists Within the next few weeks Anglian Water will be reinforcing the shoreline of Grafham Water at the end of Church Hill, so there may be heavy trucks travelling up and down Church Hill during the day. Dog walkers may have to keep their dogs on the leads. Please take care.

Super-fast broadband We've all been forced to struggle on, using the slow broad-band provided by BT (or TalkTalk or Sky or whoever your broadband provider is — the effect is the same, as it's the same copper wire provided by BT that runs into your house and probably has your phone line as well) and none of us get speeds much above 2.5Mb.

There's now a company who will provide Fi:Wi (fibre wi-fi) connections to the whole village as long as we can show that there's a real demand from the community. To do this, all you need to do is register your interest here: http://www.nextgenus.co.uk/east-of-england/cambridgeshire/grafham-ellington/

There are more details available here

http://www.nextgenus.co.uk/faster/ on what's involved and there's also a great description of a small village in Lincs that went down this route last year

I'm very happy to answer any questions you may have and you can email me at anytime at [email protected]

PARISH NEWS…

December 2011 January 2012

The following link has been added to the village website: http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/expression-gen.aspx

This is a registration site provided by BT. Visitors to the site can add their names and addresses to register an interest in the provision of broadband and this may in-crease the likelihood of upgrade to the Buckden ex-change. If an upgrade is already under consideration, your expressions of interest may help to speed up the process.

The Parish Council are agreed that the use of the church as a polling station for the village is totally unacceptable and has further agreed to subsidise the use of the village hall which is eminently more suitable.

Repairs are required to the 5-a-side goals and the Coun-cil has placed an order for the work to be carried out.

Cllr Downes is arranging a meeting of all local Parish Councils and Cambridgeshire Future Transport to dis-cuss pilot schemes for community transport. Grafham Parish Council has agreed to host the meeting which is scheduled for 31

st January 2012 at the village hall.

Cllr Patricia Jordan advised the council that, following a consultation on changes to the budgets and treatments in respect of mental health, there should be more infor-mation available early next year. Cllr Jordan advises anyone affected by the closure of Acer ward at Hinching-brooke Hospital to contact her.

At the January meeting the Council received information concerning the possibilities of providing superfast broad-band in the village. You will find further details in ‘Letters to the Editor, below, and on the village website.

There was a general discussion around what Grafham will do to celebrate the Dia-mond Jubilee. It was agreed that the Coun-cil would help to fund a party for the chil-dren in the village and perhaps also an evening event with a bar and some music and maybe a 1952 feel. These are early discussions and the Council would like to know what level of support there would be from resi-dents. The village web site has a link to email council-lors, let them know what celebrations you would like to attend or if you would like to help with the organisation of any events. You can also let the Council know by talking to one of them.

The next meeting of the Council is on 14th February.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH The police advise me that there have been no reported incidents in Grafham over the last 8 weeks, which is very good news indeed.

However, I have been asked to make everyone aware of the huge increase in metal theft and particularly from British Telecom - they advise that if anyone sees an engineer working at a BT box with-out an adjacent BT van to call the police without delay. This also applies to roof engineers who are stealing lead.

I now have a further stock of Neighbourhood Watch stickers so if you can display one in your window, let me know and I will deliver it to you.

Spaldwick Primary School News Christmas festivities were thoroughly enjoyed by all at Spaldwick Primary School.

FOSS (Friends of Spaldwick School) held their annual Festive Fayre which was very successful and raised £770. Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children gave a

traditional performance of ‘The Na-tivity’ for pupils, parents, members of ‘The Welcome Club’ and invited guests from Spring Common School. On Tuesday 13

th December

we held a ‘Festive Carol Singing Day,’ starting with a Christingle Ser-vice involving the youngest chil-

dren, followed by Key Stage 2 children leading a service in St Andrew’s Church on the theme of ‘Christmas Wishes’. The day culminated in the light of a beautiful winter’s moon with Community Carol Singing, on Spald-wick Village Green, by children, parents, staff and gover-nors. This was followed by much needed, warm mince pies and mulled wine, provided by ‘The George’.

During the week, a traditional Christmas Lunch was en-joyed by the lunchtime supervisors who were waited on by some of our pupil employment groups. End of term was celebrated in the usual slide show of photographs reminding us of all the wonderful things that had taken place in the first three months of the academic year and of course, the whole school singing and dancing to Slade’s ‘It’s Christmas time!’

2012 looks just as exciting for us. The planned activities so far include: a visit from Finn, the trainee guide dog (who we’re sponsoring this year,) a Viking day, ‘Bike Wise training’ and a musical produc-tion of ‘Daniel in the Lions’ Den’.
