Presentation of the LordPresentation of the LordPresentation of the LordPresentation of the Lord “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, ac-cording to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and glory for your people Israel.” Very often, having more light is not something we desire as it forces us to confront something we really do not want to see. There can be comfort found in darkness. It has an eerie sense of security to it. We do not have to challenge ourselves or be challenged and can simply exist in some fabricated state of self-fabricated blissfulness. Jesus came to bring light, and it is a light that is resisted by many and hated by some. It is a light that causes us to see things as they really are and not as we would want or need them to be. It is no wonder then that Simeon boldly and honestly proclaims to Mary, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you your-self a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” We have to take the Gospel message as it is and not just use those parts that are useful to us or more palatable. Taking Je-sus at face value can and will lead to turmoil and dissention. Hearts will be pierced. Whether we like it, Jesus’ proclamation of what the world God created really ought to look like has real and absolute social implications. It has a lot to say about how we treat our brothers and sisters: spiritually, personally, economically, and globally. It has every-thing to do with the poor, the immigrant, the scared, the unborn, the vulnerable, the sick, and the broken. The light opens us to a challenging, table-turning experience that may not be something we want to see but shows us where we need to be. ©LPi

Fr. John!

Greetings, I have fond memories of going to Church with my father at the Paulist Center Boston. Afterward, we came to enjoy a donut at a coffee shop, where my father invited me to express my experience of God in the scripture. I do appreciate his pa-tience with my efforts as well as his driving lessons to and from church.

While at BC High, I became interested in how public transportation affects economic development. I studied this material at UMass Amherst, where I became involved in campus ministry at the invitation of classmates and the preaching of Fr. Joe Quigley, Fr. Michael Twardzik and Fr. Merle Lavoie. Instead of continuing studies in graduate school at Chapel Hill, I obtained at STB in theology at the Dominican Fathers' Angelicum University in Rome and a STL in dogmatic theology at the Jesuit Gregorian University in Rome. After ordination, I served in Springfield area parishes and vocation work. I obtained a JCL degree canon law at St. Paul's University Ottawa and worked a number of years in the Springfield Marriage Tribunal as an advocate for people seeking annulments. I obtained an MBA at Western New England College and served as Rector of St. Michael's Cathedral, Spring-field.

I began working in Campus Ministry first at UMass and Amherst College and later at Duke University, Springfield College, American International College and Smith College. Along the way, I also taught at Seton Hall University and AIC. Most re-cently I also served as a temporary administrator of St. Mary's Parish, Hampden, and as a Visiting Priest at Williams Col-lege. I understand my mission statement to be "enabling people to trip over the presence of God". Contemporary artists, as well as playwrights, explore themes cultures seek to understand. I see both as offering pointers for effective preaching. I look forward to appreciating their insights available in the area.

Fr. Michael sees the St. Patrick-St. Raphael Parish as a family. I am grateful for his warm welcome and that of Debbie, Karen, Donna, Jim, Bob, the counters and of course, Sammy. I look forward to meeting parishioners, those active and those not so active. I feel honored to build upon the hard work of previous pastors, among them Fr. Michael Lillpopp, as well as the parishioners. I feel I have a lot to learn. I look forward to nourishing the parish family as well as being nourished by it. I also look forward to serving as a Visiting Priest at Williams another semester as well as coordinating Campus Ministry Out-reach for the Diocese.

I have come to believe that the Spirit is active in times of our transitions. So, let us pray for each other.

God bless you, Fr. John

Solemn Profession of Vows—February 1, 2020 Bro. Philip Nolan, O.P.

A L M A M A T E R

Williams College Williamstown, Massachusetts

Brother Philip Nolan grew up in Williamstown, Massachusetts where his family attends the Parish of Saints Patrick and Raphael. He went to Williams College, majoring in philosophy. As a junior in college, he spent a year studying in Oxford, England, where he first met Dominican friars. After graduating, he worked for First

Things magazine for two years before joining the Province of St. Joseph. “The rich intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Order caught my eye first, but it was the humanity and joy of the friars I met that helped me to be open to God’s call. Alongside and with the help of

my brothers, I desire to be conformed to Christ through studying and preaching God’s promise of salvation.”
