Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome

Introit (hymn 393) O day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light. O balm for care and sadness, most beautiful, most bright; On you, the high and lowly, through ages joined in tune, Sing, "Holy, holy, holy' to the great God triune.

*Call to Worship The season of Lent sets us on a journey, which begins in the wilderness. We follow the way of Jesus, who faced trouble and testing. Our call is to trust in God, who does not leave us alone. For God leads us not only into the wilderness, but through it.

*Hymn 166 Lord, Who throughout These Forty Days

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you. Our desires for earthly kingdoms of wealth, privilege, and power often blind us to your heavenly realm. In seeking to provide for ourselves we sometimes become deaf to your voice and spurn the bread of life you offer. Forgive us, God of grace. Teach us to rely on your saving word, to trust in your sustaining care, and to worship and serve you alone; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon

*The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed (traditional version)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Call to Prayer (hymn 473, refrain; choir sings first time, then all sing) Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life.

WORSHIP NOTES

Occasionally in my ministry, I have presented

sermons in the form of a monologue, especially

when I felt the scriptural text lent itself well to

this form of communication. This morning’s

sermon text for the first Sunday in Lent, Luke

4:1-13, is one of those texts, so - brace yourselves.

I will present the sermon in a monologue. In the

monologue I will take on the role of Satan

tempting Jesus in the wilderness. Yes, I’m playing

the Devil!

Today, as we enter the forty-day season of Lent,

which recalls Jesus’ forty days of fasting and

temptation in the wilderness, may we, too, hear

God’s challenging truth and grace-filled guidance

in our times of struggle and bewilderment.

-Bob Cantrell

CLASS ON IMMIGRATION Today begins a special series on immigration that

will continue through the season of Lent. Teresa

Waggener, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

national staff person for immigration issues, is

with us today to tell us what the PC(USA) is doing

in this important area. The class will gather in the

fellowship hall at 1:00 p.m. each week. Invite

your friends and neighbors!
