“Let Us Love” Together In Mission

The Catholic Church has been an undisputable force of good in the world. Just take a brief mental look at the Church’s incredible labor of love around the world. With more than 1.3 billion faithful strong (not including our sister Christian churches), the Church is in every nook and cranny of the world with the Good News for the people, food for the poor, medicine for the sick, and education for all. Our missionaries have built and continue to build churches, clinics hospitals and schools in all continents of the world. While we may not have the publicity power of The American Red Cross, our Catholic Relief Services and other organizations in the Church are constantly in war-torn countries such as Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Congo – to mention but a few - and in places with so much human suffering offering much needed relief. Here in the United States, we are evangelizing, feeding, healing and educating millions of people every day; not to mention millions of lives that have been saved through our fight against abortion.

You know, people often say that religion is the greatest problem in the world. Seeing all the wars, killings and atrocities committed in the name of religion, some people conclude that religion is to blame. They argue that humanity could have been better off without religion. Yes, there have been many religious fundamentalists from different religions who, in their twisted understanding of God, believe that their hateful atrocities and bigotry have God’s approval. Jesus completely repudiated such a stance. In fact, he once said to his disciples, “…the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.” (Jn 16:2-3) In other words, Christian and non-Christian fundamentalists neither know God nor His Son Jesus Christ. For no action performed outside of love could come from the God revealed by Jesus Christ. “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” (1 Jn 4:16) As Christians, we are our best and God is present and active in us when we love.

Together in Mission is together in love. Contributing to this wonderful mission is an act of love and evangelization. Such a unanimous action shows the Church at its finest. And when we join together in love like this, we become an unstoppable force of good in the world. So let us make our commitments today with generous hearts; “let us love.”

"Amemos!"

Whenever someone starts talking about evangelization I have a tendency to stay quiet and not give much input at first. I always like to listen to the ideas that are being given before I add my ideas or take on a task and the reason for this is simple, evangelization is not easy. I remember when I was confirmed Bishop Curry told us that we should go out and evangelize both the churched and non-churched, which in all honesty, sounded kind of weird to me. When we are confirmed we are commissioned to be Missionary Disciples which was instilled in us at baptism. In other words, we are called to evangelize and be a beacon for our faith. But let’s be honest, there are different ways that people try to evangelize that can be rather harsh. Evangelization isn’t fire and brimstone, it’s invitation and journey. Evangelization is spreading the word of God in a way that brings people to the church, not push them away. This week we talked about evangelization with our Year 2 teens and the mission they are given and how being confirmed is them choosing to accept that mission.

February 11, 2018 Page 5 Today, Archbishop Gomez invites every Catholic to make their annual commitment to Together in Mission. Last year, 363 PARISH DONORS helped us raise $68,116.

This year’s theme of Let Us Love reminds us that our gifts to Together in Mission are an active demonstration of our faith and love for those in our Archdiocese who need our support. We invite all families, those who have given in the past, and those who have never made a gift to prayerfully consider making a commitment to this year’s campaign. Your gifts will go a long way to help our parish reach our 2018 PARISH GOAL of $72,824.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.
