    The theme of rebellion can be taught through the emotions felt by Collin's main character, Katniss. Throughout the novel, these emotions led Katniss to turn her back against and humiliate the people that run the dreadful world she lives in. "'It's like Peeta said, I was shooting and they were ignoring me and I just... I just lost my head, so I shot an apple out of their stupid roast pig's mouth'"(Collins 106). Katniss is angry because the Gamemakers ignored her while she was trying to show her skill. Consequently, this vexation led her to act against the Gamemaker's by shooting at their pig and leaving the room without being dismissed, an action that left them surprised. After Katniss' ally, Rue, was brutally killed, anger and hatred for the Capitol once again revealed itself. "To hate the boy from District 1 seems inadequate. It's the Capitol I hate, for doing this to all of us"(Collins 236). Katniss and her affection for her friend Rue makes her rebellious side show in order to protect the ones she loves. Therefore, when Rue was killed in the Games, Katniss automatically channeled her grief to loathe toward the Capitol for killing a young, innocent 12 year old girl. This is significant because the death affected the protagonist tremendously and gave her another reason to hate the Gamemakers even more. Katniss is able to show that no one can control who she is and what she does. Through her anger, toward the Capitol and the Gamemakers, she commits crimes that no one has done in Panem for many years.

Teaching point:  Essay writers look for places in their essays where there could be another interpretation or opinion about the text, and they write to argue why their interpretation is the best one.  They do this by nodding to the alternative argument and then explaining why that interpretation is not as good as their own.

Family­­flashback  1st period

The theme of family is depicted frequently throughout The Hunger Games using the author's craft move of flashback to incorporate information that readers need to know.  Some people might interpret this to mean that family isn't the reason why Katniss was able to overcome many obstacles throughout the games, instead it was luck.  But clearly, this is incorrect because Katniss mentions her strong feelings for her sister, Prim, and is convinced that she is the only person that Katniss truly loves.   "I don't care if we are rich.  I just want you to come home.  You will try, won't you? Really, really try?...Really, really try...I swear it.  And I know because of Prim, I will have to" (Collins 36).  The theme of family explains Katniss' commitment to winning and her promise to Prim binds her to do so.  Therefore,  Katniss must overcome all obstacles to avoid death.  This is significant because while in the games, Katniss recalls having an important conversation with Prim, and  promised her beloved sister that she would do everything she needed to in order to win the games.  

Hope­­character development

The theme of hope is shown through the author's craft move of character development so that the reader can witness Katniss' evolution into a strong care­taker and hard­core tribute.  While some might argue that Katniss was born with a innate ability to survive in the wilderness they forget that in the text it states after the death of her father in a coal mining accident, she is willing to hunt, volunteer for tribute, take care of Peeta in the cave all to provide hope for a better life.  "At 11 years old, with Prim just seven, I took over as head of the family" (Collins  ).  If the theme of hope means that Katniss is willing to care for her family by illegally hunting and gathering food,  then it is clear that Katniss is committed to her family's survival. This illustrates that Katniss' effort to provide for her family developed skills and a will to win that she would need to survive in the games.

4th periodSurvival­­setting

In The Hunger Games setting is an author's craft move used by Collins to communicate the theme of survival so that the reader has a general idea of where the story takes place and the struggles that Katniss must overcome during the games. Certainly it could be said that setting was only used to make the plot details more interesting and engaging for the readers.  While this is a good point, it fails to account for the fact that Katniss used her environment in the arena to her advantage in order to survive.  "In the remaining hours before nightfall, I gather rocks and do my best to camouflage the opening of the cave"  (Collins 278).  The theme of survival is depicted because  Katniss is able to manipulate the setting in order to protect the cave from outside threats.  This illustrates that Katniss must take a leadership role in protecting Peeta because he is severely injured after an encounter with Cato.  

Will to survive, suspense

The theme of will to survive is demonstrated throughout The Hunger Games by building suspense in order to allow the reader the opportunity to become more involved in the details of the novel. Some people might interpret this to mean that suspense was used for the sole purpose of driving the plot, but clearly, illustrating the theme of survival through suspense allows the reader to be a part of every detail leaving the reader to wonder what will happen next as Katniss ventures through the journey of the games.  "Before I can stop myself I call out Peeta's name" (Collins 244).

If the will to survive means that Katniss will risk her own life to find her district 12 partner, then suspense is building because the reader does not know if Peeta is still alive or whether or not Katniss will be discovered.  This illustrates that Katniss cares about Peeta more than her own life.

will to survive­­external conflict

The theme of will to survive is portrayed in The Hunger Games by Collins using the author's craft move of external conflict to allow the reader to understand Katniss' struggles while in the arena. While some might argue that external conflict was used to move the plot forward and make events more exciting for the reader, they forget that in the text it states on many occasions Katniss feels she owes it to her family to return to district 12.  For example, "Besides, I'm distracted by my latest idea about the careers and their supplies.  Somehow Rue and I must find a way to destroy their food" (Collins 288).  If the will to survive means that Katniss needs to overcome blowing up the mountain of supplies the careers have obtained, then she will acquire confidence that is needed to potentially win the games. This is significant because Katniss must face the external conflict of battling her adversaries and losing, therefore, letting down her beloved family if she is not successful in her quest.  

Chaos and order­­setting

In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins uses the author's craft move of setting to describe the theme chaos and order to illustrate the hardships of district 12. Certainly it could be said that setting was used for character development and creating interest within the arena.  While this is a good point, it fails to account for the need to establish a general background of information for the reader so that there is a better understanding of the difficulties the setting causes. "Our part of district 12, nick­named the Seam, is usually crawling with coal miner heading out to the morning...men and women with haunched shoulders, swollen knuckles, many who have long since tried to scrub the coal and dust out of their broken nails" (Collins 5). The theme of chaos and order is significant because the people of district 12 struggle daily to survive harsh government sanctions.  This illustrates the harsh setting of a coal mining district and its arduous and monotonous existence for those who must endure.

Rebellion­­feelings and emotions

The theme rebellion is shown in The Hunger Games  by the author's craft move feelings and emotions to give the reader's the ability connect with Katniss as she struggles. Some might interpret this to mean that Collins uses feelings and emotions to encourage the reader to make inferences about Katniss' next move, but clearly the reader is able to empathize with Katniss because she has feelings and emotions that are relatable.  "Suddenly, I am furious, that with my life on the line, they don't even have the decency to pay attention to me. That I'm being upstaged by a dead pig.  My heart starts to pound, I can feel my face burning.  Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight to the game makers table " (Collins 101­102).  If the theme rebellion means that  Katniss must act against game makers, then she is a vessel by which the district's emotions reach the capitol. This is significant because  Katniss is infuriated and wants to incite change and stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.  

Love and sacrifice­­flashback"Except for when Prim is very sick then I sing her the same songs she liked as a baby"  (Collins 234).

The remembrance of Katniss' past and  the sacrifices she made for those she genuinely cared for help her get through the games.  Therefore,  she was able to let her guard down while mourning her fallen ally.  This illustrates  that the memories of her sister helps her overcome insurmountable obstacles.

Hope despite government control­­flashback

The theme hope despite government control is depicted through the author's craft move of flashback to allow the reader to understand the grasp that President Snow has on the districts.  Some people might interpret this to mean that Collins was in fact developing characters so that the reader could relate what was happening in the plot, but clearly the capitol's power has too strong of a grip on the districts because memories of the past haunt their minds.  "Let them call the Peacemakers and take us to the community home, I thought, or better yet, let me die here in the rain " (Collins 30).  If hope despite government control means that Katniss must find a way to provide food for her family, then she will have to break the rules of the government to escape under the fence to hunt and acquire food.  This is significant because  Katniss remembers, through flashback, when life was challenging only receiving a limited tessarae as the only source of food for her very poor family.  

Will to survive­­internal dialogue"I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do, there is a part of every tribute they can't have" (Collins 237). 

The theme will to survive and Katniss' determination to not let the government control the tributes during the games, provides her the strength to endure.  Therefore,  she wants to prove that she is not a government pawn.  One example of this is depicted as Katniss internally reconciles the need for her to stay true to herself.
